Again the intent is good but it seems they are doing well with adoptions and I would consider the less fortunate greyhounds and other pets in our system. I adopted my current greyhounds from this organization and I couldn't be more happy with my dogs. I am also a part time volunteer as a result. A couple of key points to remember about the adoption process: 1) The adoption process includes completing an application where you will be asked to answer a number of questions. It's important to answer truthfully and not provide answers you think they want. In part, this questionnaire will be used to match you up with a suitable dog that will be a family member for the next 10 or so years, so you want to make sure there will be a good match. 2) Even though their website shows pictures of the dogs ready for adoption, there is a natural tendency to want a certain dog based on their picture. Don't do this. Trust in the process and let the adoption rep present you with dogs that would suit you best. I appreciate the fact that this organization is made up of dedicated volunteers, who are willing and able to provide you with a great support mechanism to help your racer make the transition to a 45 mph couch potato. read more

We recently adopted Marco, a retired greyhound, through Greysave and they have been amazing with us. First, they helped us find the best match for us, provided many supplies to help us go through the first few days and then have been helping us with responding to all our questions. Marco had some skin irritation and they took care of the financial cost and suggested a vet, then he was experiencing fear during his walks and they put us in contact with a dog trainer that was phenomenal at providing advice. Greyhounds are amazing dogs, we are very happy to have Marco with us, and it has definitely been a much easier process having the support from GreySave. Really amazing people. We have adopted 5 retired Greyhounds over the years from Greysave. They do have an interview process that is designed to protect the dog and potential adopter from a mismatch that would cause the dog to be returned to Greysave and have to be re adopted. Greysave has perfected this process to minimize trauma to the dog in bouncing in and out of a home that was not the right fit for that dog. There are rules that must be agreed to in adopting a Greyhound. The rules are in place to first and foremost protect the dog... They are not arbitrary . This isn't a physical shelter but rather a network of foster families and other volunteers which covers a wide area of Southern California. They often have representatives and dogs at local area pet stores as well as quarterly social events where adoptable dogs are present. Check their website for these events. They have the typical requirements of most rescues, but our home inspection and dog placement was very quick and painless. The adoption fee is a reasonable $270 which covers shots and neutering (required). With few exceptions, all their rescue dogs are 2-5 year old ex-races from tracks in Arizona and Mexico that have spent at least a month in a foster home learning how to be a pet. In the space of a week of contacting, my wife and I got two sweet well behave apartment friendly greyhounds! If you are an apartment or condo dweller, really do look into getting a greyhound! The volunteers are very non-judgmental and full of helpful advice when you have to make the inevitable trip to the doggy emergency room. read more

I have now adopted two greyhounds from this group, and am constantly amazed by the group as a whole. The support is amazing! Whether you adopted your dog yesterday or two years ago, you can always call with questions or for advice, and they will get you some help. I've even known of instances where the president herself has made a trip to the vet with an owner who needed support and a knowledgeable voice. Stay away from Grey Save. They are a controlling and over-bearing organization that wants to tell you EXACTLY what you MUST do and CANNOT do with your dog. They will be critical of your training, your yard, your family, your home and have a process that is undocumented, unreasonable and arbitrarily enforced by people within the organization. They have contracts they want you to sign. An organization that is so self-absorbed with their arbitrary judgmental process, DOES NOT HAVE THE DOGS BEST INTEREST AT HAND. We adopted our second Greyhound though Greysave in November of last year. Greyhounds are unlike any other breed, require specific knowledge of the breed and have special care requirements. You know who understands this? People that have Greyhounds. It is sometimes difficult for people who haven't adopted one to "get it" but they'll never truly understand until they do. To them, while all the "rules" and safety requirements might seem like overkill and unreasonable, it truly is for a reason. But do you know when the people that think the "rules" are stupid will understand? When something tragic happens at the dog's expense. These safety measures and care requirements are BECAUSE they have the dog's best interest at hand. Most if not all adoption groups have a contract in place so that isn't unusual. Hemopet outlines what you can and cannot do with a Greyhound on their website, which is no different than what any other adoption group will tell you. Also, if people who want to adopt a Greyhound educate themselves beforehand about their life at the track prior to retirement, the adoption group's "rules" would make total sense. Greysave volunteers work tirelessly for this wonderful breed which I have seen for myself, as do volunteers at other adoption groups. Working with an adoption group you're comfortable with is important. However, no matter the group, not following basic care recommendations is a tragedy waiting to happen. What the adoption groups do for these hounds is very admirable and we're glad to be a part of this wonderful circle of Greyhound people. read more

There are so many good things to say about GreySave, I don't know where to start. Thanks to GreySave I currently I have two greyhounds at home, my third one passed in 2014. When you adopt a greyhound from GreySave you are not just adopting a dog, as an adopter you are being adopted by a huge support network of knowledgeable greyhound owners, lots of greyhound savvy referrals and a really nice group of people. For example, when one of my girls collapsed, I had one GreySave person on the phone talking to me, then she called the animal ER to let them know we were coming. Two other GreySave volunteers drove to my house (at 9:30 at night) to help me get her to the car and drive us to the animal ER in Irvine. My girl is fine and all three who helped me that night are now very dear friends. If, godforbid, a greyhound gets out of it's home or yard and gets lost, GreySave volunteers totally go out in force to help the family find the dog. I'm not talking about going out for a day or two and giving lipservice to searching, I mean day, night, weekends, boots on the ground, on social media, hanging posters, handing out fliers, it's truly incredible. GreySave also does a great job of teaching recent retirees how to be pets prior to their adoption through their network of experienced foster homes. Teaching the dogs how to use stairs, walk across hard wood floors, how not to run through windows or sliding glass doors. Most retired racers right off the track haven't been exposed to these things yet. The group also does thorough medical exams, spays and neuters, etc before the dog goes to its forever home. They also do a really good job of making sure the adopting family is the right match, not just for one of their dogs, but for a greyhound. Retired racers are dogs, to be sure, but there are some special things that adopters need to know and abide by. read more
