Coming from what most would consider a non-reader type of person :), I can tell you that you should…read morestill make your way here. If nothing more than to experience the history of Powell's or if you're searching from some sort of obscure book in physical form. This place has all things a book bug would love to dig through. Aisles and aisles of novels, graphic and otherwise provide for endless amount of time looking over their inventory if you so desire. Personally, I also like looking through what I'd call their impulse buys. Stickers, clothing, tote bags and other assorted "gifts". They have a ton of stuff to choose from and all unique and not mass produced. So take some time while visiting or otherwise and stroll through this piece of history and celebrate its independence!

A bibliophile's dream and worst nightmare. Containing over four stories of books, Powell's City of…read moreBooks is not a corporation, but a self standing business. They have used and new books for sale at an exceptional price. They have stationary, puzzles, games, and cute accessories for your bibliophile in your life. We visited to purchase books for my bookshelf, as I am finishing my first book while we are on vacation. I found the second volume of a used edition book for 7 dollars off the full price. I also found a used edition of a book I've been searching for in California! Could I have bought it online? Yes, but I enjoy using my time to support mom and pop book shops instead. Each floor of books is categorized and labeled, so you know where you're headed. For example, one room is called the "gold room" had all the manga and romance books. Dependent on what you're looking for in genre, they've got it! If you are looking for a specific book, they have kiosks on every floor for you to type and look for your book. We used their computer, and our book was labeled by aisle and directed into the blue room. We bought two books, magnets, a patch, and a tote. It is a wonderful store and absolutely matched my expectations. We spent a great time walking through each room and checking out what they had to offer. Truly a magnificent collection of books!

I recently visited Portland with some friends. I spent the requisite half-a-day in Powell's my…read morefirst full day in the city but I was a bit disappointed in their theology section. As I planned out my Portland trip I had determined to go to Windows Bookseller and my visit to this bookstore exceeded my expectations. As I understand it, this cozy location is smaller than the Eugene location, but it still has an amazing array of books available, prompting many Solomonic decisions about which books to buy and which ones to leave behind. A few minutes after I arrived and started browsing, I heard Adam recommending Walker Percy to another customer. I knew then that this was a place with good taste in theology books (browsing the literature shelf I noticed a lot of the usual suspects among the "Books & Culture" crowd, including Wendell Berry, Marilynne Robinson, and my favourite, Alice McDermott). There are a lot of theology, biblical studies, philosophy, and history books available at very good prices. Names that leapt out from the shelves included Marva Dawn, Stanley Hauerwas, and Walter Brueggemann. Many of the hardcovers I purchased had laminated covers which I always appreciate. The staff were very friendly and helpful and I left with a box full of books. The next time I visit Portland I am definitely going to prioritize visiting Windows Booksellers again.
