On a Friday night, Carlton and the Lygon St area was pumping. It was late, I was tired + hungry. My friend and I needed a quick and cheap food fix so Grill'd was a great option. Mostly, I was drawn in by a large sign promoting 'low-carb buns' available on their burgers. Seriously? Low carb bread? Bread. What kind of voodoo magic is this? I needed to know. I am normally a carb avoider. As someone that eats out A LOT it's one of the only ways I can keep my pant size the same, but it's a massive pain to be 'that person' when your friends want cheap and easy like sandwiches, pizza, or burgers. So I trialled a chicken burger on the low carb bun ($1.50 surcharge). In my head, when it arrived the music stopped and at the sound of the record scratch everyone dropped their food to stare at me. Ok, so that didn't really happen...but it was quite a conversation starter as people with their fat bready buns curiously peered over to see what on earth I was eating, or just outright came and asked me about it. Lucky I like talking about food for a living, eh? The burger came out looking like it was sandwiched between two small pancakes. I could easily say it had 90% less carbs than my friend's burger, because she had 90% more bread on her bun. Basically, it's a sliver of toasted bread that is juuuust enough to stop the whole thing from being a salad. And you know what, I'm totally down with that. No it wasn't amazing, but I didn't want tons of bread and don't dig the size of their standard bread rolls. So for me, it worked and I was happy that I could actually eat my burger in reasonable bites. Oh, and much to the delight of my onlookers, I totally made up that carb deficit with a healthy portion of chips. Because potato. Overall, as far as fast food chain burgers go, Grill'd aint bad. I was pretty addicted to their mushroom and chicken burgers back in my early 20's, but my tastes have matured a fair bit since then so I haven't really been to Grill'd in years. Friday night after the rain, my friend and I chose Grill'd for dinner. I ordered a beef burger called Nourish and Flourish. Pickled cucumbers+beef+avocado match each other pretty well, and create an appetitive and non-greasy mouthfeel. Burgers and Fries. Three words that occupy my mind almost every second of the day! Grill'd is honestly the best burger joint ever! The burgers will give you a sense of grandeur, euphoria if you will. Being a vegetarian it's good to see that i can have options at Grill'd. There's about 3 or 4 Vegie burgers on the menu, and my god are they fit for a king. The Garden Goodness is a favourite but when i feel like something a tad more 'interesting' i go for the 'Field of Dreams' which has a giant mushroom as a replacement for the patty. The chips at Grill'd are also top notch. Probably not the best (nothing beats lord of the fries chips) but damn close! The fries were good and dips ok, though I wouldn't get the dips again (spiced mayo, chipotle, and another spicy mayo one). The kids meals were super cute and beef sliders came as ordered, yet bland. The lamb burger was only slightly cooked (eek) and the goat cheese tasteless. The large cold roast pepper piece was disgusting! Ugh. I love a good burger, but this thin lamb burger had no char at all and was just gross all around. I gagged after a few bites and quit eating it. My husband are his beef burger, but said his was bland. I'm spoiled with great burgers at home I guess; I won't be going back here. The folks on the floor meeting and cleaning up seemed very lovely. However, the guy that took our order may have been a robot. He had no smile, was monotone, made no eye contact, and he got our order a little wrong. Normally, Grill'd is 4 stars in my book. ~ I absolutely LOVE Grill'd chips. I highly recommend them - they're deliciously salted with herbs and especially great with a side of herbed mayonnaise. ~ The burgers are pretty good and there's a large variety as well. Check out their menu! The only downside is that sometimes I feel as though with the price of Grill'd maybe the burgers aren't that worth it. But you might be wondering why I rate this particular Grill'd 3 stars when it would normally be 4. Well, being the local Grill'd to Melbourne University, I always walk by and see this place full to the brim with students. Unfortunately, the staff are not great with the rush so the turnover is not very high either. I have come here several times just to order some chips for takeaway and found myself waiting for 10-15 minutes. Not cool. I know that it really isn't the place's fault - Grill'd is great and I would never knock them. OK burger lovers. This one's for you. Grill'd burgers are THE BEST burgers in Melbourne. They are fresh, tasty and inexpensive. The condiments are delicious. The accompanying chips are perfectly seasoned. The menu is diverse and offers something for everyone, with salads and vegetarian options as well as traditional burgers. The Lygon Street Grill'd is really well set out with plenty of space to sit and really polite, pleasant staff. Grill'd is quite simply fantastic. To get burgers of this quality for between $10-$14 is such great value it's almost criminal. I've been back three times and each time I've gone for the Morrocan it's just too good that I don't want to feel disappointed with something else. Having said that I've also had a bite of the Field of Mushrooms burger (vegetarian) and it is delicious as well. The chips are thick and tasty while the staff are super-friendly and seem to enjoy what they're doing. There's plenty of seats but this place is always busy because it's so good. Summer sunset- Im in love with Grill'd. Meatwave was on this week and the first week was free burger. Not that they needed that to get me in anyways, but I sure did use it. Grill'd is a burger joint that provides "healthy burgers" although not massively healthy, they make you leave feeling full and satisfied. A joy place and a licensed joint. A burger and a beer just goes down so well. The chips here are to die for, add some sweet chilli mayo and you got everything you need. Grill'd also support local charities aswell, which is a good feeling behind the brand. Every week new charities and customers choose where the money goes, (3 to choose from and they are all winners 1st $300 2nd $100 3rd $100) Given a bottle cap when you order and you place in jars to the selected charity. read more
