I agree with the other reviewers. Don't be intimidated by the outside appearance of the shop or the location. Mr. Grimes was a delight to encounter and clearly passionate about his craft. He performed a tune-up on my lawn mower the same day (although he did say this wasn't the norm), and I got the impression he genuinely cared about making sure I knew how to take care of it. Answer his questions honestly and expect an honest answer about whether or not your lawn-mower is worth fixing. He is indeed a talker though, so be prepared to spend a few minutes chatting with him. Third, he's really knows his way around small engines. Last, he is willing to teach you what you need to do to maintain your lawnmower. He is a kind man. So kind that when I got my lawn mower back from him, I unloaded it from my car and inadvertently flooded the carburetor. I called him and he walked me through how to fix it over the phone. Grimes Services is a tiny crowded shack located on East College near Avondale train station. Don't be deterred by the appearance of the shop. The owner has been there for years. He is only open a few hours a day but provides prompt service at very reasonable prices. If you sit and watch the place when they are open you will see a steady procession of loyal, local customers. Expect to wait awhile if someone is in front of you. When it is your turn, the owner will give you his complete attention. He does tune-ups and all sorts of repairs on push mowers. I've driven by this place for a decade before needing some help. I had an old, crappy Murray lawnmower that lasted 10 years with no tuneups (guess it wasn't so crappy) before I decided I just wanted to upgrade. Bought a self-starting Lawn-Boy that wouldn't self start after three years. I was thinking of buying a new lawnmower instead of sinking dough into a fix, but realized it was too new to waste money like that. Took it to Grimes. He tuned up that pup and I had it back in two days in working order (although he says it could take two weeks, but I think that's for harder to troubleshoot mowers). I appreciated the advice he gave me about keeping my mower in good working order at home. He even showed me where to add a little spray starter fluid if I can't crank the self starter (basically it forces a prime). Lawn-boy doesn't mention this in their instructions. My only compaint is that he didn't take the full two weeks to fix my mower because now I have to use it ; ) read more

Mr.Grimes, where do i start. I will say he creates miracles every day. I took him my lawn mower and blower that I have had since 2002. Over the years i called myself performing maintenance, but little di I know i was just scratching the service. my Blower was dead and my lawn mower sounded like it had been thru a metal grinder. When Mr Grimes took a look at both, he said this may take ten business days, if it can be fixed. Mr Grimes as he took both engines apart , always sent me pictures of the issues he found and details on what he would do to try to correct. trust me when I say Mr.Grimes is very detailed in what he does and explains to you. Well I am like one guy in his review stated, I figured I had at least 10 working days before my Lawn Mower and Blower would be ready , if he could fix them. Well four business days later I was summon to Mr. grimes shop. On this day , I witnessed a miracle " Mr. Grimes walked on water to fix my equipment", He went into the carburetor of the blower, to take out the dry rotten gas lines that had broken and made its way to the carburetor to block the gas flow. In his email and pictures he said if he went into the carburetor like this , it may not run again. I told him to take the chance, as long as I had it, I had gotten my monies worth out of it. he replaced all gas lines and the blower started right up. Mr.Grimes gave me an earful about my attempt at maintenance , but i must say it was very good advice. My equipment is back up and running like new. Mr. Grimes also told me,I might want to think about replacing my 20 year old lawn equipment. I let him know, that if he can't fix it, I will then purchase some new lawn equipment. Mr. Grimes is simply amazing with small engines. So you know if, I have any issues I will be back. But I hope to only return for annual maintenance. Also, his pricing is very fair and honest. Fantastic! Mr. Grimes went above and beyond to resurrect my mower from the dead. It runs better than new, for real. He stayed late for me to pick it up. He also taught me more about my mower than any user manual could have. He also gave me great tips to keep it running. He also was very honest and told me that if i have any more issues with the mower, that it wouldn't be worth servicing, to just get a new one. He is skilled at a craft. Mr. Grimes is the truth. Honestly I thought I was doing my thing with keep up and servicing my lawnmower every year on my own. I would change out the spark plug and, change the oil & filter but for whatever reason I think my lawn mower musta caught the zika virus and it kept sputtering in and out. After watching countless hours of YouTube and taking 2nd hand advice from a fellow neighbors..... I decide to take my lawn mower to the professionals! Mr Grimes is straight up old school kat.... with a ridiculous amount of knowledge about small engines. When I got my lawn mower back!... He got it back 2 days earlier than I anticipated and that thing hummed like a Porsche 911 Carrera!..... I paid $89 for the service and repair and it was well worth it..... Cannot day enough good things about Mr.Grimes! My husband and I had a lawnmower that would not crank. This is a decent little place for getting maintenance done. They do not work on self propelled mower issues. It's really hard to understand the owner and when I talked to him about my issues we had a misunderstanding but in the end he corrected the bill in my favor so I'm still giving this place 3 stars. read more

Completely incompetent. Knows nothing about engines and admitted this when I asked him to describe what he supposedly "fixed". He charged 90.00 to change oil and sparkplug, and to ruin a spring which I now have to replace. Lots of fast talk that makes no sense. If your mower needs repair, take it to an authorized dealer. read more
