The Cantwell Lodge or otherwise known as the Runway House, is a little B&B located right in the…read moresmall roadside town of Cantwell, Alaska...conveniently just 30 miles away from famed Denali National Park. I stayed here for 2 nights and 3 days and used this cozy house as my "home base" for traveling to and from Denali. It cost $90 per night for accommodations which was rather cheap in comparison to the minimums I discovered for choosing lodging in and around Denali at $150 per night. So overall, I didn't really mind driving the 30 miles each way as the sceneries in the area were picturesque with mountains set all around in the background. This Cantwell Lodge was pleasant and charming. I got to meet other tourists traveling around Denali as well who were staying in the B&B too. Also cool about the stay here was that right across the train tracks within a short stroll from the lodge was a blue collar, all-American restaurant called The Longhorn Saloon. After both days of hiking around Denali, I returned back here to Cantwell and one night had fish tacos at the saloon and the 2nd night I had a regular old-fashioned hamburger. It was nice to have such an accessible eating establishment situated right next door to the B&B. Another interesting aspect to my experience was there being a real Active Runway for planes to depart and land, right in between the lodge and the restaurant. Sort of crazy, eh! What an out of the ordinary spot to have a runway! So, each evening on my way towards the saloon restaurant, I was actually crossing the runway. Good thing no planes were flying by, lol. Some extra notes about this Cantwell Lodge/Runway House... - I never met the host. She emailed me instructions for accessing my bedroom and all the accommodations. - My room was set up to feel perfectly welcome. It was as if I were returning home each day while staying with family. - The bathroom/shower is communal. But...it was clean and well maintained. - You were allowed to use any of the kitchen appliances or relax in the living room. The house was open to everyone though from my recollection it was just myself and 2 other couples/families staying at the lodge. It never got crowded at any point in terms of having to wait for anything. - During my visit in the middle of June, it was absolutely frigid outside with tough rainy conditions, but the B&B inside was well heated and stayed warm. - Btw, outside of resting my head at the lodge and eating dinner at the saloon, there was really nothing to do in Cantwell. You can basically drive past it without even noticing anything is there. - From here in Cantwell, myself and most folks were headed south towards the Anchorage area. In total, discovering what Denali was about and then coming here to the Cantwell Lodge/Runway House B&B to rest and recuperate, I had a fulfilling experience. You get this under the radar town like Cantwell being far enough away from your typical touristy spots, but close enough to all the action. And for the itinerary I designed throughout my 2-week journey from Fairbanks down towards Seward, it fit in quite well for my first ever visit to Alaska.

This ain't no princess cruise lodge! Reservations, and accommodating the guest need some work. We had to change our plans by one day over two months ago, almost immediately after making the first reservation, within 24 hours. Check out time is 11, check in time is four. We had to pay $25 extra to be able to stay in our first room until one. Guess we will find other things to do until we can move back into our second room at 4 PM Since we had over two months before check in, when plans change by one day, I called repeatedly and emailed looking to see if we could stay in the same room for both nights. Every time the answer was no. Unfortunately, I have a feeling with all these rooms that they have, there was a room that had a two night window in the last two months it became available, yet no one reached out. I reached out to the manager, Sue by email one month before our revival, one week before our arrival, and the day before our arrival with no success on relief from having to change rooms. We also ordered a romantic edition, which was a bottle of wine with a charcuterie tray. We had to remind them of this when we got to the desk, and a warm bottle of white wine and a prepackaged charcuterie. Kit were provided after we entered our room. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice place to be located at, yet remember is far up the hillside and any movement from your room requires stairs, and/or steep roads to the restaurant, the check-in desk, or the main drag in Denali/"GlittercGulch, where all the other hotels are. This became an issue due to my traveling partners new onset auto immune knee condition that appeared about a month and a half ago, and movement in the area is not very easily done if your knees are Inflamed. Just check out the picture of the stairs that I posted, and multiply that by five or six that are between each row of cabins. The staff is very nice, mostly summertime help, or likely on work visa as most work from other countries than the United States to include Jamaica, Macedonia, I am the Dominican Republic. Many of them have not even ventured out of the immediate area and enjoyed any of the local attractions when questioned about the best food, activities, and other possibilities. Denali national park is the highlight so far, and we will be doing some river rafting this afternoon and will report back on that. The other thing is that previous reports about the overlook restaurant seemed to be stellar, although it was closed last year and a Mexican restaurant has been opened with, but looks to be a very limited menu. As things changed quickly, I will verify all I said at this time, I see efforts to improve the grounds being Made, and can change in a short amount of time. Also, if you want a shuttle to Healy for the brewery it has great food, you need to arrange that separately. we used a tour company that goes by the same name as the town and the mountain, and they were very accommodating. There was only two of us going up to Healy and coming back. More to follow after the second night. Update! Right after sending in review, front desk called and stated that our new room number 501 was ready for us now. We asked to have our bags brought up, and a representative came up to give us our new key and our bags are down at the old room. Here is a view from the new room, 501 and its comparison to the Dall suite, # 408. So the second set of pictures are of our new room, watch out when going into the toilet and shower, the door hits the toilet and you have to go around it before closing the door behind you so you can access the toilet. All in all, this is a beautiful site with some formidable obstacles if you need easy accessibility or need to be accommodated in any way. The value is good, and my recommendation is to bring a vehicle, or maybe a golf cart, or maybe a power chair. I give it a strong 3/5!

Our room was not ready, but we were able to rent bear spray as soon as we arrived. Renting the bear spray is free as long as you return it. We were in room B3. This room is in the row next to the check-in lobby. When we checked in, they were able to assist us with any questions we had. They have cofee and tea in the check-in area. If you need to use a toaster, they also have one there. The room: As I said above, it was dated, but a good place to get some rest after a long day of hiking in Denali National Park. The beds were comfortable and everything was clean. The room did have a fridge and a microwave. We asked for an iron and an ironing board and it was provided. The restroom is small, but the sink is outside the restroom door. This works well when you are traveling with friends as you can shower and not Hold up anyone else from using the sink. The shower had hot water at all times. Water pressure was OK. The room also came with the TV. We didn't really watch it. I was surprised how dark it got in the room once we closed the shades. During the day, we did keep the shades open to let some light in. Do be aware the other people can see you, but we can also see the wildlife. We didn't see any big animals, but we saw plenty of bunnies and squirrels around the hotel. Parking is available on site and is pretty ample. The hotel is about 15 minutes from Denali national Park. It is about 10 minutes away from food. There is one restaurant the opposite direction of Denali that is by about five minutes away called 49th State brewing. It was probably one of our favorite. Just FYI, there is a lake called Otto lake on the same street as the hotel, but you do have to either walk down or drive down to it as it is surrounded by other businesses and homes. There is a public park and a pier. We did spend some time there and noted that people were kayaking, canoeing and swimming. In July, the lake water was not cold. Overall, don't expect luxury. Expect a clean, comfortable hotel room where you can shower and get a good night sleep. Expect super friendly staff that are more than willing to help and answer all questions

The tub drain was partially clogged! If the housekeeping was done regularly or at least after each guest checks out then this problem should have been noticed. There was no housekeeping service provided in spite of requesting on two different days! When asked if floor gets vacuumed the answer was "NO". Worst stay we have ever had at any hotel. We have travelled extensively throughout USA as well as internationally, including to developing countries.

My Dad and I stayed at Riley Creek Campground our first and last nights in Denali National Park…read more This campground is located right near the Denali Park Entrance and convenient if you're just entering the park and/or if its your last night in the park and you want to be near the entrance/exit. I booked our sites months and months in advance as we were staying in peak summer season (nights of June 20 and June 23, 2019). The check in process was relatively painless; we checked in at the Riley Creek Mercantile and I must say, it was awfully convenient to have the mercantile available and so convenient. We took advantage of showering on our last night and even did a load of laundry as we had just spent two nights at Wonder Lake Campground down at mile 85 of the Denali Park Road. Overall, this is a nice campground although it's really popular, quite large, and can be noisy. Campfires are allowed and the mercantile is convenient if you forget anything or want to pick up some ice cream or a cold beverage. There are showers and laundry facilities in the mercantile as well. A favorite for me was the Ranger Program we attended right at the amphitheater. Ranger Julia presented on "Cute Critters." Cute program. Good campground. Reserve in advance.

Our room had an outside plug in so we could plug our vehicle in - bring your own extension cord. Cantwell is a "pit stop" location, there is NO store aside from one single gas station so come with microwaveable food or you will have to take about a 30-60 min drive depending on which way you're going. Denali is closed Sept-April so durning that time, your only option is Healy or Anchorage.
