Our group of six did the Covered Wagon Dinner Tour. We booked it through Princess toward the end of our Alaska cruise. This was a hard review to write because there were so many aspects to the excursion. They did deliver what they promised, a rustic covered wagon ride out to a mess hall where dinner was served before the wagon ride back. The wagons are a rough ride and we were warned before. It was the experience of riding a covered wagon through the forest, in fact, it was probably more comfortable than what explorers would have tolerated 100 years ago since the "wagons" here have car tires. The dirt road maintained but rough and we traveled several miles out to the mess hall. A little dusty with a few bugs. The dinner was served family style with about 12-15 seated at each table. A nice way to meet new people and make new friends. They started with macaroni salad, potato salad and cole slaw. They were all very good. They then brought out vegetarian chili, again pretty good. The main courses were a little weak. The chicken was roasted? With very little spices. Your kids will love it, we all dipped it in the chili. Second they brought out BBQ pork ribs. Not the best I've had and definitely not "fall off the bone" tender. They followed the ribs with salmon that was very good. Dessert was the best part. They serve you all the food you want and are more than happy to bring you more of anything you want. You will not leave hungry plus they offered drinks including wine (cheap). Considering with they are doing and what they have to work with we felt like it was worth our money and time. read more

In short, I absolutely, positively, highly recommend Black Diamond Resort. I'm 70 years old, and my wife and I were looking for a "non-bus" adventure. We wanted to experience the true outdoor Alaska without the restrictions of paved roads and boring guided bus tour narratives. Well, if you're looking for the same, Black Diamond Resort may be for you. When booking our adventure, we had a choice of either a covered wagon ride, side-by-side atv, or quad. We chose the side-by-side since my wife didn't feel comfortable driving the quad by herself. We assume the covered wagon is for those who want more of a subtle experience. There were a total of five side-by-sides in our group with our guide, Jonathan, leading the caravan, and Michael, trailing our group. Without saying too much, because I don't want to ruin the surprises for you, Jonathan lead us through miles of back-wood Alaskan trails with brief stops once in a while. With each stop, Jonathan and Michael would offer history of the area and point out significant mountain peaks. We made a few unscheduled stops so Jonathan could point out moose and other wildlife. About half way through the over 2 hour adventure, we stopped at a cabin in the woods for our meal. We were warmly welcomed in by the kitchen staff, and our group took a seat together at a large picnic table; there was plenty of elbow room. Our meal was delicious and plentiful. I suggest coming to the table hungry. Did I say the meal was delicious? Well, it's worth saying twice. I don't want to say any more about our experience. I don't want to ruin the surprises that await your adventurous spirit. Just know this, I would give Black Diamond Resort 6 stars if I could. Highly recommended...we did the side by side rental on day two of a twelve day trip and i seriously doubt we'll be able to top it. The guides were excellent, the food much better than expected and the tour itself was the best of all. It had just rained which made things extra fun! The only suggestion I would have and it minor, would be to clean the windshields of the machines prior to use. We could see through them, and got some fresh mud on then while touring, but it would've been nice to see clearly, at least for awhile, the beauty of the area where we were riding. I would 10/10 recommend...if we ever come back to the area this will be the first thing we sign up to do again! read more

It is a 2 horse drawn covered wagon ride through a cleared area. Very pretty to see the sights. There is a cushion you sit on. But it is very bumpy just as it is supposed to be. It is like traveling way back in time when that was the only way to get around. Our guide was Danny. He was very pleasant and full of interesting facts about the horses, girls driving the wagon, the area and different breeds of horses they have. You ride for roughly 45 minutes under a very warm blanket. You arrive at a big building which is where you will eat dinner. We had sweet potato chili, bbq ribs, corn on cob, bbq chicken, grilled salmon, potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw and desert. Lots of food and choices. If you walk away hungry then it's your own fault. The place was very clean and organized. We thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. I would suggest trying it but if you need to be sitting in a comfy spot then don't do it. It is very realistic with all the bouncing around. That is a great part of the experience. read more

Buyer Beware - They will rip you off and refuse to make it right! My family and I did the ATV and backcountry dinner through Viator with Black Diamond.  First, let me say our guides, David and Andrew, top notch, 5 stars.  They were great!  Explained everything, gave back stories of the areas we visited, helped take photos, very polite and kind.  The trail was fine, got in some good views, however...... We had 3 older people with our group of 7, who didnt want to go fasternthan 5 mph.  We are middle aged with 2 teen boys, and let's just say I could have walked faster than we traveled on the trail with the ATVs.  But the real down fall here was, we got to dinner and there was basically nothing left.  First off, they only had 6 scheduled, so they only "made" food for 6 even though there was 7 people.  They didnt even have a place for her to sit, we had to create an extra spot on the edge of our table.  The food portions were basically none existent.  They ran out of corn, ribs, chicken, and salmon.  We all only got 1 rib each, 1 piece of chicken and we had to cut 1 piece of salmon into 7 pieces for all of us to have a bite.  The food was good, it just wasn't there to feed us.  Paying over $700 (with tip) for an experience that included dinner, but dinner wasn't really there and my family left hungry isn't right. I requested a partial refund since we didnt get dinner as described in the booming an was refused by this company. Choose a differnt company as this one wont hold up their end of the deal and will refuse to make it right if they fail to provide you want they promised. read more

My husband and I booked an ATV side by side tour with this company through Holland America Cruise Line. This experience was truly beautiful and so FUN! Our guide, Johnathon, was friendly and considerate of all 12 people in our group(both experienced ATVers, and novice) The meal that was served during the adventure was also top notch! Plenty to eat, and food for everyone (I have Celiac and the veggie chili and Salmon were very well prepared and safe for me to eat) My hubby enjoyed the ribs, chicken, salmon, pasta salad, cornbread and cobbler dessert! If you come away hungry it's your own fault :) I highly recommend this experience for people who are not afraid of a little adventure in the wilderness of Alaska. This was one of the best parts of my trip! My husband and I booked the ATV tour several weeks in advance. We got picked up at our hotel in the shuttle van by a very nice lady from Arkansas. I unfortunately forgot her name. She was super thrilled about her job and knowledgeable about the area. She also drove us back after our tour. Upon arrival we had a few minutes to use the restrooms and check out the store before the other van arrived. We then got brought into the garage where we watched a safety video, filled out our waivers and got fitted for helmets. Fortunately, my husband and I were the only two on the ATV tour (without the meal) so we had our guide, Luke, all to ourselves. It was basically a private tour and it was amazing. Luke explained everything about the ATV to me since I was a first time rider. He was knowledgeable about the area and made sure to stop in the best spots for photos ops. There was a ton of riding time. The trails we took were super fun. You WILL get muddy so make sure you wear an appropriate outfit. Bug spray doesn't hurt either although bugs weren't an issue on this tour. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this tour! Make sure you bring cash to tip your guide and shuttle driver! read more

We did the ATV Treasure hunt tour and it was loads of fun!! Highly recommend it and it came with lunch too!! The tour participants were split into individual family groups with the drivers and we all came together at certain points to look for clues. We went on the back trails and saw pretty views. It hadn't been raining so we didn't get to splashing in puddles but it was fun anyway! We did go across a shallow river (was almost dried up though) Our driver was very informative and told us about the area and the different animals and vegetation in the area. A moose was spotted on the trail the other other day but unfortunately we didn't get to see any. We got to pick a souvenir from a "treasure chest " at the end. Kids will love this! At the end, instead of joining with the rest of the tour at the family style lunch, we were brought to the restaurant. Even better! We got to choose from the special menu and let me tell you, the food was great! We had the salmon and halibut which came with choice of side and soup or salad. And beer!! The salmon and halibut was nice and moist. Really liked the tomato bisque I chose. Dessert was also included -choice of blueberry crumble or apple tart. They ran out of the crumble and that was the best thing that happened because the tart was soooo good! Came out hot, flaky and topped with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. Get this instead! One thing I should add is that the service was slow and there were only 3 parties in the dining room. But the food made up for it. We had also booked the covered wagon tour, not realizing it's basically the same thing but much tamer. Same trail almost. It was nice nevertheless and the horses were cool, the guide was was very informative and entertaining and the horse driver also chimed in with interesting info about the horses. Like the ATV Treasure hunt tour, the covered wagon also came with lunch. It's a family style meal- we sat at communal long tables and were served from bowls family style. We had salmon, potatoes, chicken, ribs, chili, coleslaw, pasta salad and cornbread, ice tea, wine, juice. It is the exact same meal we would've gotten with the ATV tour but thanks to our ATV driver's whim we ate at the restaurant. The restaurant meal was much better. I would recommend doing the ATV tour instead of the covered wagon one unless off-roading is not your thing. read more

Fantastic experience! The food and service were outstanding. Each employee we met was friendly and knowledgeable and I can't say enough positive things about this excursion. There was a slight mixup on where we were staying due to the fact that we moved to a new location due to a fire at Denali national Park. I called black diamond explain where we were at and they sent someone else out to pick us up. We were a little late for our covered wagon tour, but that was not a problem, they put us on an ATV and drove us out to meet up with the wagon. We continue our journey on the wagon and had the most incredibly delicious barbecue dinner. Our guide was entertaining and extremely knowledgeable. Black Diamond Resort Golf course has no respect for paying clients. Our group from NY had booked tee times for 9/9/24. We were scheduled for a 7:30 time . There was heavy rain in the area , as we had just completed an ATV tour on an adjacent property in the downpour. When we passed the course on our shuttle from the ATV park, no golfers were observed. We called to cancel our tee time , due to bad weather and were told no refund would be received. We were extremely frustrated to hear that this company would treat prepaid customers ( several hundred dollars) in this manner. They never offered to assist us in any way as our time in the area was limited. To top this off , we attempted to deal with the course and rebook for 9/10 to use our non- refunded payment. They refused and said we would have to pay full fees to book a round. This is totally outrageous and a significant disrespect for an out of town , paying customer. I would not deal with this company if you are in the Denali Alaska area as they have no respect or compassion for their clients. Enjoy the money you stole from us . Hope you needed it that bad. read more

My wife and I did the 4 wheeler experience as one of excursion tours and it was amazing especially with Ross and Wyatt as our guides there was a total of 9 of us in our group with all varying skill levels, and Ross and Wyatt did an awesome job recognizing that and placed us accordingly so that everyone in the group could enjoy the experience, Also our driver Larry was great and we would also strongly recommend the meal deal . I feel guilty for assuming this would be less than impressive.. I was definitely pleasantly surprised! The setting is not your typical "resort " image that the average person would imagine. It reminded me of the little café that my mom owned in a small town of 500 in Montana. We started with the bacon wrapped scallops, which were out of this world. We also had the mozzarella sticks which were pretty average, your typical frozen packaged ones. We then had a Caesar salad which is pretty good and then split the chicken gnocchi. The chicken gnocchi was amazing, it's a creamy pesto sauce and while it was a total gut bomb, it was excellent. The garlic bread wasn't impressive and I am a total garlic bread lover, however it didn't ruin the meal. The staff were absolutely lovely and I loved talking with them all. If you are in Healy, definitely give this place a chance to impress your pallet. read more

I wanted to like it. I really did. I'm staying at the hotel right down the road and selected this place over other options because it was close. I was hungry, and it was already a little after 1900. I knew it was going to be pricey but the convenience was going to be worth it. I selected the salmon entree but asked to have it with a salad vs potato or rice. I did receive a salad but was charged an extra &5 for it and also received the potatoes I didn't want. The salad came with a raspberry vinaigrette va the honey mustard I asked for. I got the salad more than an hour before before the salmon. It's now 2110 and I'm STILL waiting!! Two staff have come to apologize but I'm still waiting. I never did get bread. To be honest, for this price ($38.50!) , I expected a little more. I would just quit and go to the hotel but at this point the spent cost fallacy keeps me sitting here. I've seen other parties get their food at vast varying times too... It came out at 2115. Seriously ridiculous. read more

While staying in Healy we went the the Black Diamond for dinner. The food is ample and good, the beer is cold and the service was great and attentive. My husband and his son then played 9 holes on their golf course, it's nothing fancy but neither are they so it worked out great! The next day we came back in hopes for a late breakfast, while they aren't doing breakfast this summer they were sweet enough to make delicious omelettes, bacon and home fries! It was so nice. Chose whatever we wanted from the cooler to take along. Took in some nice views and learned a bit along the drive. We had dinner at the Grill after a day of traveling and hiking. The food was excellent and the portions generous enough that I had a doggy bag for lunch the next day. The salad alone could have been a meal, piled with fresh vegetables on a bed of luscious greens. Served with delicious bread. I ordered the cod fingers, three LARGE fillets battered and fried to perfection, served with roasted vegetables and a buttload of crispy curly fries. Excellent beer too. The service left a little to be desired, but I think our waiter, James, was just a bit tired. He was super nice and friendly, yet a bit forgetful and distracted. He was also very knowledgeable and helpful in explaining the beer selection and recommending the best choice for us. So, overall, still a five star! read more

Believe it or not, I had the best Salmon in Alaska in here...I tried the best restaurants in Anchorage and Fairbanks but wasn't impressed by any. I didn't expect much here... We came here just because it was close to where we are staying and there are no other decent places to eat in 7 or 8 miles. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised with the menu, the quality of the food and the service. With the kind of food they have, we really thought they must have a retired world famous chef in the kitchen, but when we asked, the lady said there are two 19-year-old girls from Kyrgyzstan...A country near Russia. They also offer a carriage ride for 3 hours...$90 and it includes a meal. We didn't take the ride but I got to see the carriages...they are pretty cute read more

What says Great American Outdoors like big, gas guzzling machines flying through the underbrush at 40 mph like an ATV? The familia and I had never tried ATV's - but like the crazy adventurous kinds we are, we dove right in. The company provides a guide and full rain/mud gear protection. Helmet, gloves, waterproof pants and jackets, and "Alaskan Gortex" for your shoes. The tour goes at the pace you're willing and we had a really small tour group of 3. The guide was great and we had a great time. We finished with lunch at the cafe, noting that prices were cheaper than the hotel and the menu looked great. Service was incredibly slow - until we noticed everything was made to order! The sandwiches and salads were of really good quality and came with fruit, mixed greens, or pasta salad. They also were super nice and I'd love to come back and try something else.* 4 stars for being awesome and not touristy! *Black Diamond also does covered wagon tours (think Oregon Trail) and has its own golf course. We were a thousand miles from home and had just bushwacked our way through a four hour hike through the rain and winds of the Denali tundra. All I wanted was a hot bowl of soup to warm me up - and I wasn't about to fall again for the $13 trap of a Glitter Gulch seafood gloop. On recommendation from our front desk receptionist, we 'discovered' the clean and welcoming Black Diamond Grill. Talk about underpromise and overdeliver! Not sure why my fellow yelpers reviewed so harshly for a place that gives great portions of delicious dishes, delivered with friendly service. Shrimp in my linguini dish were large, sweet and plentiful. Tomatoes somehow sweet and sunny (homemade canned? Garden fresh? Not sure how they did this...). The whole combo done with great flavor and fusion. Plus, the entree came with a choice of sides, of which the tomato bisque was the best I've ever had! We came back the second night for salmon salad and an old fashioned cheesecake. Even if this restaurant were located near a more worthy set of comparables, I would still come back! read more

The wagon ride was a blast! The wagons were comfortable, with nice, cushioned seats and wool blankets if you needed them - we didn't the weather was amazing. Our guide, Connor, and driver, Morgan, were kind and knowledgeable. I was very impressed with how well they handled the "know-it-all" in our group. It seemed like everyone else in the group wanted to kick him off the wagon. At the pavilion, we were greeted by more staff who served us a delicious meal of barbecued chicken, ribs, and salmon. My favorite was the chili with cornbread muffins. This was an enjoyable excursion that I will recommend to friends and family. My partner chose this place over sushi thinking there would be some vegan options for me. Alas, I ended up with a $9 house salad. It ended up being better than I expected (not just iceburg lettuce). Fresh greens topped with shredded carrots, baby tomatoes, sliced cucumbers and red onion. There was also grilled bread on top but I found it inedible due to its bitterness The bread, oil and vinegar served before our meal was also somewhat untasty. Our second helping of bread had some very hard pieces and all of them generally tasted off. My sir ordered the crab cakes, tomato bisque and a creamy salmon pasta dish. The crab cakes came crispy and looked good, nothing special. The sauce seemed to be a mixture of cocktail sauce and tartar sauce? We weren't sure, it had the texture of crab dip. He adored the tomato bisque. It was chunky, homemade and topped with croutons and shredded cheese The pasta was out of this world. It looked creamy, had capers and the salmon was smoked and so succulent it tasted like ham. Also topped with bread. I'm glad he was satisfied because I was not. Service was okay. Our servers only came to bring or take away food. Which was okay but if we had needed anything it would have been inconvenient The space is odd. You walk though a gift shop like place into a room with mismatched dining sets with carpet. read more
