I saw this Meadery advertised on my Facebook feed and decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did. My "mixed case" arrived yesterday and we gave the Valkyrie's Choice variety rave reviews at our tasting last night! When you order by mail, the Meadery sends out recipe cards with provocative cocktail recipes using their varieties in clever and delicious ways. We can't wait to try some of the Ginger Mead recipes and the First Frost recipe using Orange vodka mixed with the Nordic Farms sour cranberry mead sounds delicious! I would be remiss if I did not mention the stellar customer service we received yesterday. Upon receipt of my shipment, I noticed there was a mixup in my order. I called Groennfell and let them know the problem and received both a phone call and an email less than five minutes later giving me the tracking number for a new order they had shipped out immediately to resolve the problem. The employee apologized for the mixup, thanked me for my patience, and bade me enjoy sampling the delicious "mistake" while waiting for my new order to be delivered. We all make mistakes, but it is so refreshing to encounter a company who acts so swiftly and pleasantly to make things right. This is some amazing product. I stumbled on these while looking on how to get myself some mead. There just isn't a lot of mead i could find around me so the fact that Groennfell ships is very convenient. The mead is great, smooth and tasty. The saison is my current favorite. Groennfell Meadery has become a regular stop for us since our first visit shortly after they opened to the public in the Fall of 2013. It's a super place to spend a couple of hours enjoying fresh local mead with some fine local gentry. First and foremost, the mead is absolutely top-notch. If perhaps you've tried mead before and thought it was a bit sweet and haughty, then Groennfell will delight your senses. It's more like a dry cider than the mead you're used to and (even in the 9.2% ABV Valkyrie's Choice variety) it's remarkably drinkable. There are three meads currently on the menu: Mannaz - their basic, dry, lightly carbonated mead at 4.9% ABV. In the words of one of the owners, "this is the mead I drink when I need to get sh*t done!". This is your go-to weekday mead. Fenberry Draught - Drier, tarter and a little more carbonated, this is probably like no other beverage you've ever tried. Being tart and bubbly, this one tends to polarize opinion - you'll either love it or hate it. At 5.2% ABV, I happen to love it. Great choice for a hot summer's day lounging on the deck. Valkyrie's Choice - This is the big-hitter of the three. It has a lot more mouthfeel, body and honey residuals than the other two, but somehow still just as drinkable. Be careful though, this one really packs a punch at 9.2% ABV! Of the three, this is my personal favorite. In addition to the three staple meads, every Friday Groennfell hosts a tasting party ("Firkin' Friday") to celebrate a new small-batch mead made freshly that week. Like a Nordic Thanksgiving... only every Friday. Generous free samples are provided as well as the opportunity to purchase fresh mead on tap by the pint or growler. It's a ton of fun and we try not to miss it. Bike, hike or bus to the meadery (and/or purchase a Groennfell pint glass) and get $1 off your mead pints. Super deal. It's so great to have a local meadery in Colchester. The owners, Kelly and Ricky, are absolutely fantastic! I wish them every success in their quest to bring mead to the masses. read more

I checked out this location today and I have to say that I'm impressed with it's facilities and the business concept. Who knew you could make some good products from fermented honey which is what mead is all about. If you're not used to mead, it takes a moment to acquire the unique taste which is delicious. I met the owners who are real down-to-earth people, really friendly, generous, and full of information with all things mead. Take a tour of the facility, learn about the mead process, and taste some samples. I like the visiting area which was nice, clean, and inviting. I enjoyed my visit. read more

The meadery is tucked into an unassuming location but don't be fooled, the mead made here is absolutely excellent. We've made a point to revisit here on our trips to Vermont. Per the staff here, Groennfell's mead is made in more of a beer style than a wine style. Our favorite is the oaked amber Old Wayfarer, but the classic is quite good too. Havoc Mead, which has some awesome stuff like the chili pepper mead, is also served at this mead hall. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and seem like fun people! I'm not much of a conversationalist, but if you are (and even if you aren't, really) you'll have a good time here. read more

I was intrigued by this place and my husband and I stopped here on our way back to MA. At first, we were going to skip it due to us leaving later than scheduled but whats one stop? We were blown away. We have had mead before and hated it. It left (literally) sours tastes in our mouths. The tastes of the mead here is almost like a dry cider and champagne (due to the carbination). But beware, some carry a high ABV. I forget the name of the woman who served us our tastings but she was fantastic! She was very knowledgeable and you could tell was very proud and loved the product. The brewer was very cool too and extremely smart. We left with a growler because we loved the stuff that much. I hope to visit again and attend one of their Firkin Fridays (sample a test batch) next time i am around. read more

I have never been here personally but I buy the saison-style Mead with cranberries and it's so good! Mead is my favorite type of drink and this brand just does it so well! This is absolutely one of my favorite places in all of New England. Every member of the staff was super friendly. If you're a first timer you get to sample almost every mead they have (and they're fantastic). They also have games and cool events there as well as some great food (with awesome descriptions as well). It's absolutely worth going there even though it's not in the heart of Burlington or anything, but I could easily have spent an entire day just hanging out there. read more

This meadery is tucked away in an industrial park near Costco. The service is fantastic! One of the owners immediately greeted us and offered us a tasting as soon as we walked in. My husband and I shared eight samples between the two of us (4 each). The ciders were just as tasty if not tastier than Maine Mead Works in Portland, ME. This is a great addition to your itinerary if you happen to be in the area! Growlers are also available at very reasonable prices. My boyfriend and i were in VT (for his Christmas present), it had snowed over night and all morning and we had time to kill before our plans, so i searched things and places to do around where we were. We found this Meadery and he was so thrilled, we got there as soon as they opened and we received nothing but great service. The gentleman who was serving us was very friendly and informative and very aware of what you do and don't like. All of the mead we tried was more than amazing! We met the owner who was very fun, his personality was of someone you couldn't help but like. Around all of the tables where games of all sorts, we sat down drank a little and played board games. My girlfriend and I were trying to figure out what to do our last day in Vermont (for vacation), when we decided to check out this meadery. Neither of us are big mead drinkers, but we figured it could be a pretty cool, local place to visit. From the moment we entered the meadery and met the owners, we were blown away by the professionalism, service, and atmosphere of Groennfell. The owners spent time letting us sample the meads they created, answered any questions we had about mead or the brewing process, and even took the time to show us the equipment and explain the production process. And they did all this while being personable and, in our opinions, hilarious. What we expected to be a ten minute visit turned into an almost hour-long stay as we were just loving the conversation and the mead. Which brings up another point: this is some great mead. I've tried mead on a few occasions, and have always found that it was very similar to a white wine, and as a result haven't really ever embraced it. The mead brewed here, however, moves away from that white wine taste and instead takes on a distinct flavor of it's own. This was the first mead I had that made me understand why someone would like mead. The Mannaz would be perfect for a warm afternoon (and cider fans will love this one), while the Valkyrie's Choice is light enough to be enjoyed at almost any time of the day (...except for the fact that it packs a hefty 9% abv!). Both were insanely pleasant. I'm not a big fan of cranberry, but anyone who is will enjoy the Fenberry Draught, which I felt was true to the taste of authentic cranberry by avoiding excessive sweetness and focusing more on a subtle tartness. All three, however, were hands down the best mead I've ever had. And if you can make, head to the meadery on Friday for the Firkin Fridays, where they sample an in-house only mead (We got to try a few of these too, and they were fantastic. They had a pomegranate mead on tap which is super refreshing!). All in all, comfortable space, great product, and wonderful owners. Definitely worth supporting! read more

I haven't been to many mead makers, but this is my favorite by far! Their Old Wayfarer mead, brewed in oak barrels, is fantastic. They also have a chili pepper mead, which I thought would be gross, but is also great. The staff are really friendly and entertaining. They also have food, like stews and bratwurst dishes that are really good. Also house mustards are great. Highly recommend making the trip North of Burlington if you're in the area! read more
