Groennfell Meadery has become a regular stop for us since our first visit shortly after they opened to the public in the Fall of 2013. It's a super place to spend a couple of hours enjoying fresh local mead with some fine local gentry. First and foremost, the mead is absolutely top-notch. If perhaps you've tried mead before and thought it was a bit sweet and haughty, then Groennfell will delight your senses. It's more like a dry cider than the mead you're used to and (even in the 9.2% ABV Valkyrie's Choice variety) it's remarkably drinkable. There are three meads currently on the menu: Mannaz - their basic, dry, lightly carbonated mead at 4.9% ABV. In the words of one of the owners, "this is the mead I drink when I need to get sh*t done!". This is your go-to weekday mead. Fenberry Draught - Drier, tarter and a little more carbonated, this is probably like no other beverage you've ever tried. Being tart and bubbly, this one tends to polarize opinion - you'll either love it or hate it. At 5.2% ABV, I happen to love it. Great choice for a hot summer's day lounging on the deck. Valkyrie's Choice - This is the big-hitter of the three. It has a lot more mouthfeel, body and honey residuals than the other two, but somehow still just as drinkable. Be careful though, this one really packs a punch at 9.2% ABV! Of the three, this is my personal favorite. In addition to the three staple meads, every Friday Groennfell hosts a tasting party ("Firkin' Friday") to celebrate a new small-batch mead made freshly that week. Like a Nordic Thanksgiving... only every Friday. Generous free samples are provided as well as the opportunity to purchase fresh mead on tap by the pint or growler. It's a ton of fun and we try not to miss it. Bike, hike or bus to the meadery (and/or purchase a Groennfell pint glass) and get $1 off your mead pints. Super deal. It's so great to have a local meadery in Colchester. The owners, Kelly and Ricky, are absolutely fantastic! I wish them every success in their quest to bring mead to the masses.

There just isn't a lot of mead i could find around me so the fact that Groennfell ships is very convenient.

The owner Alex is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his craft and is happy to share his knowledge of this wonderful fermented beverage and the process of making it. Alex is great company and his passion for creating delicious mead pours through in each representation the drink itself. His recipes are unique, delicious, and full of surprises. I came with a small group most of whom had never had mead before and were skeptical but by the end of the tasting Alex had made mead fans out of all of them. Definitely a special place, don't miss the chance to go if you're in the area.

We were there on a Sunday, a beautiful spring day - the sun shining and the small group of visitors kept growing as the afternoon progressed. Unknown to us, the Vineyard had a busy agenda planned, but first they steered us to a grassy area away from their main parking area to park for the night. We went inside to the cool and comfortable wine tasting room and were greeted by a very friendly engaging staff. Ruby offered us a sample and ran through their day's agenda. A talented group of musicians were setting up their equipment on the shaded patio outside while guests were spreading blankets on the lawn or setting up a picnic on one of the several available tables. We were meeting old friends there and hoped we could find a seat. The band played much of the music that I grew up on (Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, the Dead, and lots more.) We picked out a few bottles to put in the frig in our rig ... then went back inside. Our friends (that live nearby in Vermont) joined us first inside where we shared a charcuterie board. We later moved to our Class B with them and enjoyed our little picnic, accompanied by their delicious wines. Then late in the afternoon, we went back inside because a jazz ensemble was to perform. The sun was still shining and everyone there was feeling the vibes. We met the owner who had a staff that he should be very proud of - they were very gracious to all the guests that came through. Be sure and stay here if it's in your path.

Many of the beers aren't available out west, but apples to apples, this place beats any beer shop I've ever found back home...or nearly anywhere I've been. The cooler is organized well by locale, by types, separating out hard ciders and seltzers. Outside the coolers they've got many different bottles from here and abroad. A good selection of stouts, some lambics... And they have a lot of mead products, locally produced. I didn't try them, but can't wait to one of these trips. Best part, the owners/staff are super kind and personable, and knowledgeable. Last summer I stopped in and asked him, "if I can only take one 4-pack, which would you guarantee and stake your reputation on?" He gave me what turned out to be one of my favorite beers, an IPA from Great North. This stop, they didn't have it, but he ordered it for me, and gave me another 4-pack he guarantee I'd like. Haven't tried it yet, but have no doubt it'll be great. I was in here today and all the customers were excited and going through the same decidophobia I've faced here. There are grilled cheese sandwiches for sale upstairs. I'll continue to make stops here on my way to where I'm going.
