I've been here many times and my regular barber is Vincent. But he was busy most of the time, so I decided to give other barber a try. A had a lady barber to cut my hair, very unsatisfied. It only took her 10 minutes to finish up my haircut, when it usually takes 20-30min for Vincent to cut my hair. After the haircut by the lady, I was feeling a lil sketchy whether or not my hair is done right, but I was wearing a hat that day so I didn't check it careful enough. Few days later, my friends told me my isn't the same length comparing both side of my hair. New to Philly and needed a place to get a haircut. Groom was a couple blocks from work, and I saw the positive Yelp reviews, so I took a flier and booked an appointment. It's located in the basement of the arts condominiums so once you walk in the front door you need to call and have them buzz you in. I was lucky enough to walk in with a few other people so I just walked right in. It's downstairs on the right. The vibe in the shop is pretty old school. It's a small basement shop with some retro furniture and an old school barber pole. Relaxing Sinatra-type music and GQ's on the coffee table in the waiting area. The staff and customers were all BSing and laughing, and it felt really inviting despite being in a basement. I sat down with Diego and gave a quick run through of what I was looking for. He was extremely meticulous with the cut and double-checked throughout to make sure everything was to my liking. The conversation flowed easily and in a little less than a half hour I was out of the chair with a great looking haircut (including a hot lather shave on the back of the neck and sideburns). All-in-all the cut cost $24, reasonable for Center City and I'll definitely be going back. Keep in mind it's cash only, but it does add that old school touch instead of messing with cards and reciepts. read more

I have hard-to-cut hair and have been trying to find a barbershop in Philly for a while. After years of cutting my hair myself and having a friend do it, I decided I wanted the professional experience. Groom caught my attention after reading glowing reviews and visiting their website, which features a nice jazz soundtrack. They are going for the retro barbershop feel and know which buttons to press. My first cut at Groom was from a barber who no longer works there. It was a great cut, probably the second best I've ever had. About a month and a half later I tried to make another appointment with the same barber but was told he was out due to illness. Frank filled in and did a fine job. It didn't match up to the first cut, but didn't disappoint either. Subsequently I had two cuts with BJ, and this is where my dissatisfaction was born. The first cut from BJ was mostly with clippers, and may have been 100% clippers. She worked quickly, giving me a straight razor shave on the back of the neck, sideburns and around the ears. After she was done shaving, BJ then gave me a short neck massage, which I hadn't asked for and was slightly off-putting, but I didn't complain. She also put some styling gel in my hair which I never use and hadn't asked for. I washed it out as soon as I got home. Once she was done, she asked me what I thought. I looked in the mirror and told here where to cut to get the look I was going for. She did, and then remarked, "wow, that really did the trick! You knew exactly where to cut!" Am I not paying you to cut my hair? Shouldn't you be the one who knows where to cut? The cut was ok, but still not nearly as good as the first cut I'd had at Groom. And the little extras were a tad annoying. My second cut with BJ was much worse. I told her what I wanted and she assured me that after a couple of cuts that she "knew my hair now". Well, after about 15 minutes of haphazard clippers work and another massage and gel application, I was left with a very disappointing cut. I have since changed barbers and am much happier. read more

My boyfriend has been so nervous about leaving the hairdresser he's always had, I found Groom on Yelp and he made an appointment at the beginning of the week. Went there today, Joe worked really quicky, had the razor blade back of the neck shave at the end, and he left with such a great haircut, it's the best he's ever had! It really helped that when prompted to do just "do whatever you want" Joe really stuck to my boyfriends personality and gave him a really modern but yet still professional and stylish hair cut. I love it, very simple but it's evident there was style and thought put into it, not just a pair of clippers to the head. Groom, to simply put it, is the best quality to value ratio that you can find in all of Philadelphia, and that is a promise. I've been going to BJ since May now and she continues to impress me with her meticulousness, consistency, and finesse. The first time I went there she pulled out a book of examples and we were able to build a look from there. Furthermore she surprisingly knew a lot about my hair type, I'm vietnamese and my hair is straight, thick, and never falls the way I want it to. BJ however just knew how to cut and shape it perfectly. Im pretty sure that if she can make me look good, she can do the same to you. My hair is stubborn, course, and grows in different directions and cutting it is in a word, difficult. That said, a solid haircut is an absolute necessity. Joe is the only barber I have ever trusted with my hair - and that's no B.S.. I've been going to this place for a few years now and I won't go anywhere else to get my haircut. For $24 you get what other places wold charge $80 for. First is the atmosphere. It reminds you of the old barber shop. There's always nice jazz music playing and the decor is relaxing and fun. The staff is incredible! I'm a "Joe" guy myself but the other staff is always fully booked. Joe does an incredible job to make you feel welcomed and comfortable. Most importantly, he knows how to give you the haircut you want. For the longest time I always got the same cut: the number 2 fade. I told him I wanted to try something different. He showed me several different styles that would work with my hair and recommended a few. He knew how my hair moves and sits and did a great job helping my get a different look. I ALWAYS get a ton of compliments on my hair after coming from Groom. If I had anything negative to say, and I don't, wold be book your appointment in advance. They book up quickly. Have been going to Sean for a while now. We've more or less kept the same appointment time and day-of-the-week every couple of weeks for two years. Awesome guy - always reliable, always friendly, always does a great job with my hair. Whether it's cutting a bunch off or helping as it grows out, Sean's always done an awesome job. If it were up to me, I'd never have another barber. Beyond that, the rest of the people that work there are friendly and from what I've seen do an amazing job with all sorts of looks. On a side note that hopefully helps illustrate how good this place is - I found out about this place when my buddy stopped mid-conversation at the Comcast cafeteria and jogged over to a stranger to ask where he got his hair cut. He told us about Sean, and neither my buddy nor I have seen another barber since that day. Best barber shop I've ever been to. I took down my previous bad review, thinking that I would wait a week and see if the haircut I initially thought was bad would turn out right. Turns out, it didn't. As expected, its going to take about a month for my hair to get normal; and I will inevitably have to get another shaping. I was loyal to this shop for the past year because Frank M always cut according to my requests; he took time to listen, cut slowly and fade my hair really nicely. Alas, he left and I got a cut this time from Sean whose got glowing reviews from other people. I must have looked like a troglodyte, because he was determined to fix my hair according to his vision, IE not listen at all--and even somewhat bristly imply that my current hair was way off. I specifically said, barely anything off the top, keep the front long. How am I supposed to know its going to be 2 inches shorter by the end when my hair is being rigorously sprayed down, combed, and chopped. I've been to these "New Oldschool barbers" for years, in different cities, and never once was told such request was unorthodox. Now, I look like an extra from the Sandlot; its unflattering, one-size-fits-all. I can only attribute it to a sort of autopilot approach - this place has a week long wait, so my negative review will hardly ding them. I'm balding in my 20s. Needless to say, this has led to some very self conscious trips to various barbers throughout the city. From spending $50 on a cut to giving up and going to Super Cuts, I've tried it all but nobody could seem to make what's left of my hair look halfway decent. Then came BJ. Two friends recommended her so I said "WTF" and made an appointment. She just had a cancellation and could squeeze me in the next day. Let me start with saying that "squeeze me in" gives the wrong impression - during the time I was there, you'd have thought my hair was the only focus BJ had in her life. I explained to her my insecurities about my thinning hairline and she quickly found the good that's left up there and highlighted it. She told me what I needed to do to continue the look and trust me, I've stuck to it. I still receive compliments weeks later. So I have been letting my hair grow for over 2 years and it was long an awesome! i have only had it cut 3 times by people here in Philly and they were all HORRIBLE (American Male, Chop Shop and some place i cannot remember) but it had gotten to the point I couldn't do anything with it but slick it back and when the gel wore out the only option I had was to use a hair tie in it. I need something more professional for a new job as well. I wen to BJ with a few pictures and together we came up with a style and a look and when she finished, it looked better then i could have ever hoped. I'd like to preface this review by saying that it would be very unfortunate if Yelp filters this out with their "amazing" algorithm because I had an outstanding experience at Groom and they really embraced me with open arms. I was in a bind to get a haircut because of my first "big boy" meeting and also because I hadn't gotten a haircut in over a year. I had no idea where to go for a haircut in the city, so I searched Yelp and Groom looked great, so I called on Monday and they were able to get me in on Tuesday before my meeting on Wednesday. When I walked into Groom, I think I caught everyone at the shop off guard because...well I hadn't gotten a haircut in over a year...so as you can imagine I had a lot of hair and would get a lot of looks...by everyone....anywhere, not just at Groom. I don't think I was their typical customer and I don't think I was their typical cut, a long haired kid looking for a trim to keep the long hair flowing, but they fully embraced it. Joe McMenamin took on the challenge and he absolutely nailed it. I've never been so happy with a haircut in my life. A quote that I remember Joe saying to me when I told him how much I loved it was,"Sometimes when people with long hair go to get a haircut and want to keep it long, they don't leave with long hair" and he was exactly right. Every place I've been to before Groom would butcher my hair, hence why I hadn't gotten one in over a year. But after Groom, I've gotten compliments from co-workers, my girlfriend, the clients at the meeting, and I'm most definitely going to get compliments from my mother during Mother's Day weekend. On top of the great haircut I got from Joe, Groom is an amazing shop. Being a newbie I was confused on how to get in since it's in the Arts Condos, but I was fully capable of figuring it out. The shop itself made me feel like I was getting a haircut with my Dad when he was a kid. It has a very throwback feel to it and it doesn't even compare to any other salon or barbershop I've been too. I came here after my regular barbershop closed. This place is a little hard to find on your first try (it's in the basement of 1324 Locust), but once you step through the doors, you'll know these guys are serious about cutting hair. The warm, retro interior and no-nonsense barbers make you feel right at home. Oh, and is that Charlie Parker playing in the background? You bet it is. Looking at their calendars, the stylists here are booked solid all day every day, and it's no secret why: instead of rushing you through a haircut with a buzzer and some quick snips, these guys take their time, making sure you leave with a great looking haircut and taking care of you in the process. Best part: when they clean up the back of your neck, they do it old-school: with hot lather and a straight-edge razor. You'll ask yourself why you didn't come here before. This place is not only affordable, but all of the barbers are really personable, and they want to get to know you. I was a regular at Groom for 3 years. Then had to work overseas for a year. Came back to Groom and was a bit disappointed that my barber parted ways with Groom heading a different direction in his career. Though, I still felt that Groom had the je ne sais quoi as it did in the past and lived up to its reputation. Upon arriving I met with my barber who greeted me without a handshake. Now any gent knows a handshake is important in building a relationship. Shook it off and I sat down told the barber what I wanted specifically, and he went at it. We had a bit of small talk though his conversation was more towards his colleague. Again no worries at this point, but I wish the barber would've focused on cutting my hair. The worry came when I realized I only sat in the chair for 10 min where the barber removed my apron and neck tissue to shave my neck. At this point he was basically done. Though, when the barber sprayed my hair with water, added a bit of product and brushed my hair, I asked if the barber could round out the stiffness on the sides of my hair to make it look a bit tame and natural. Not putting my apron back on, hair clippings were down my neck and shirt. The barber brushed me off removed the apron and we were done. I politely smiled, paid, tipped, said thank you and I still did not receive a handshake. Im really disappointed with the talent they currently have. This place was the cats pajamas where you would go, get a cut and have that spring in your step on your way to your next adventure. If you want an average haircut, this is your place. But if you take pride in who you are, what you do, and how you look. Definitely, go someplace else where they value relationships and groom you the way a man should be groomed. read more

Taken me way to long to write a review. I've been going here since it was Sal and the owner and just 2 chairs. Sal was great, I miss the guy, but Groom has come a long way since then. They've expanded to 4 chairs and redid the place last year. I really like the theme of the place and Frank is a great barber. The prices rise every 6 months or so, but they aren't ridiculous. About the same price as a terrible haircut at Hair Cuttery. read more
