It has come to my attention that Carter's, purveyors of baby and children's "fast fashion," have a…read moresocially irresponsible practice of not recycling any of their plastic hangers. Today I asked the lady behind the cashier at their Norwalk, Connecticut outlet, if they could reuse the hangers (as I did not need them at home). She replied that the store would not reuse the hangers, and all hangers went in the garbage NOT RECYCLING. Norwalk has a wonderful single-stream recycling program. However, I was flat out told thousands of hangers per year just get thrown in the trash out back everyday. While I love that Carter's can sell me a cute shirt for two dollars (which will inevitably get spattered with juice and other mysterious stains), I do not love that my daughters great-great-great-great grandchildren will still be living with the mess we are creating today. It is said that the average plastic takes between 400-500 years to degrade. Many plastic hangers used by Carter's are #5 or #6 and are usually able to be recycled through most curbside programs. While I recycle at home and will teach my daughter the importance of recycling...why is Carter's not doing it's part to reduce, reused or recycle! Basically it seems that they do not want to pay for recycling services which is a disgrace considering they are ruining the world for the very children they aim to clothe at a profit to themselves. Carters sells more than 10 products for every child born in the United states and prides itself on "quality and innovation" (carters.com). I am asking Carters to pledge to make the world a better place for everyone's children by making it mandatory for their stores to reuse or recycle unneeded plastic hangers. As the largest branded children's clothes manufacturer in the United States, it is in their interest to become and advocate for ETHICAL manufacturing and consumption of their goods. Great customer service! Local to me and I'm there a few times each month.read more
