Having had Groth wines at a dinner party and how delicious it was, I was looking forward to visiting Groth for wine tasting. The winery building reminds me of a Mission. We were there on a recent Sunday for a 2:25 tasting and were seated in a table in the ornate tasting room. There was a carafe of water and bread sticks on the table. There were three tables and a large table of eight in the middle of the room. The room opens up to a beautiful garden. We were here for A Taste of Groth experience and were greeted by Curt who was our host for the tasting. Curt was personable and gave us a history of the Groth, which was founded by the former CFO of Atari, the video game company. For the tasting we were served a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Proprietary Red and a bonus pour of the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. All the wines were delicious with my favorites being the Reserve Cabernet for the red and Sauvignon Blace for the white. Curt was informative and explained the background of each wine that was poured. We were invited to take our last pour and enjoy in the garden and winery grounds. We had a great tasting experience in our tasting of the delicious Groth wines. It was enjoyable two hour visit. We now know what is Groth and its history from our great pourer, Curt. read more

Groth is worth the reservation on your tasting list in Napa. David was our host and was a wealth of information and fun! An ornate seating area, preset awaiting our arrival. The Chardonnay rival's Rombauer for sure! The red wines were amazing as well. Smooth, bold, bursting with flavor. Definitely plan for 90 minutes. My friends and I found Groth online by chance and decided to come since the exterior was unique, and we're so glad we came! We booked an early morning tasting for the 3 of us at 10:15 am and were warmly welcomed by Mark and led to our table in the comfy, beautiful tasting room. The tasting was excellent and we enjoyed every wine that we tasted - the wines are definitely less bold and easier to drink that other those at other wineries we've visisted. We appreciated all of the history of educational fun facts that Mark shared with us, while also giving us plenty of time to chat and enjoy our wine. He was also kind enough to let us walk into the adjacent room with all of the wine barrels and teach us a bit more about the aging process. Groth has long been a favorite. My wife and came here in 2016 on our honeymoon and had a great time. We came back a few months ago loved it again and now we're club members. First, the wines are fantastic. It's a more restrained style that might appeal to not-casual wine drinkers. If you want over-oaked, mega-purpled, high ABV juice you'll find other places. No Napa wine is cheap but the prices at Groth are very reasonable. Why? Because it's a family owned winery and they bought this prime Oakville real estate 40+ years ago. They don't have the same financial pressures some do that make $200 bottles a necessity for others. They're known for their cabernets (I believe they received the first 100 point score awarded Wine Spectator years ago) but they also have a fantastic Sauvignon Blanc. The building that houses the tasting room is flawless. It looks like it was built yesterday and every detail is perfect. There is no wear and tear. It looks like they repaint it every morning. Also, shout out to their ADA situation. There is an ADA entrance with bathrooms and an elevator that gets you to the main level. Gold star. We prefer to sit inside but there is a fabulous patio with great views. The best review comes from those leaving the Groth tasting room. Everyone is carrying a cream colored box with the Groth logo full of wine bottles. read more

We had a lovely al fresco tasting during our visit here in July 2024. I don't recall the name of the gentleman who served us, but he was delightful and warm, with an obvious enthusiasm for Groth. After tasting their wines, everyone in our party understood why. (Tastings are by appointment only) I'm sorry to have waited so long, but opening a couple of their bottles this past weekend had me reminiscing... These wines are absolutely lovely. The oak cross is full of ruby fruit. The cab sauv is also delightful. I recall very much enjoying their whites as well, but will have to refresh my memory when we crack open one of those we brought home. Thankfully, my parents came with us and were driving back home so we were able to bring back 6 bottles, but even if not, the shipping would be worth it! (Though Total Wine does have some Groth selections available in our area!) Happy to support such fine vintners! read more

Fantastic vineyard! I made reservations for a red wine tasting with the charcuterie option but unfortunately, we were running late due to the lack of Uber rides while in Sonoma. My sister-in-law called them to notify them about our very likely late arrival and they kindly accommodated us. When we got there, they had the wine lined up for tasting and the charcuterie plate. We felt rushed in the beginning but did not blame them at all since the late arrival was partially our fault. My sister-in-law was cold and they kindly offered us clean, warm blankets while we sat at the wonderfully decorated patio area overlooking the grape vines. It was honestly the most wonderful thing ever! Our visit here tops my Napa valley experience easily. The wine were fabulous. My husband had accidentally introduced me to their wine when he purchased a bottle as a Christmas gift and I ended up keeping them in mind while planning my trip to Napa. Absolutely no regrets. The staff were fantastic, the tasting was fantastic, and the wine I ordered to be shipped home met all my expectations. I've been there many times and at no time did she ever talk to me or acknowledge that I was a Groth member. My friend and I chose to visit Groth Winery on a sunny January 2026 afternoon, because of the Locals Month offer. What a wonderful experience we had! We had an educational, friendly, and fun tasting with our host, David. His enthusiasm for the wines, the story of how Groth was founded and grown, and so much more, made the afternoon unforgettable. We learned so much, and we enjoyed looking around, both inside and outside of the winery (including the Insectary Garden!) I particularly loved the bright and colorful paintings! We would like to thank the owner and all of the staff there for making this special visit possible for locals, and for managing such a pristine environment that exudes a vibrant, yet cozy, ambience. Considering how many bottles of Groth I've drank over the years, I'm surprised that this is the first time I've actually visited the winery. We had the last tasting appointment of the day, but rather than feeling rushed, Mark provided us with the most amazing wine tasting experience. I already knew Groth wines were great, but our tasting experience was more like a big family get together with Mark as the host, and I hope to go back soon to reciprocate his hospitality. I had the good fortune of visiting Groth twice in the past two weeks during separate wine tasting trips. Of the 20 wineries that I visited in Napa and Sonoma, Groth was one of my very favorites. On my first visit here, I was part of a group trip and lucky enough to have lunch with owner Suzanne Groth, who couldn't have been nicer. She was so friendly and shared so much about her family's winery and the wine business in general. I learned a lot at lunch and then got to enjoy sipping some of their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon while walking through their vineyards. I loved my first visit to Groth so much that I decided to schedule a tasting when visiting Napa again with two friends. We had fantastic personal service in their tasting room, where we had our own table and were walked through a flight of wines by Randall, a wine educator at the vineyard. He also shared a lot of information with us, let us revisit our favorites, and took us around the cellar where the barrels of Reserve wine are. The tasting fee here is $25, but refunded if you purchase at least $50 worth of wine. On a weekday, it was very empty, with just one other group who was gone before we were, so we essentially had the place to ourselves. I'm a huge fan of Groth and am strongly considering joining their wine club. I'm hoping my wallet will be able to forgive me! read more

I can't stress enough how much I loved my visit to Groth Winery. Everything was so professional and polished that I instantly felt right at home as soon as I was greeted at the door. You need to make an appointment to taste here but they can often accommodate you on short notice. Give them a call to ask because I'd hate for you to miss out on this tasting experience and these amazing wines. Izzy led our tasting appointment and was simply delightful. She had just the right amount of professionalism and friendliness and provided excellent service. Not only did she give us a ton of information about the wines, she also took us on an (unscheduled) mini tour of the barrel aging room, gave us an overview of the steel tanks (and let us sneak a couple of tastes of the unblended wines), and even let us take a peek at the bottling line. She even poured us 3 of the older vintages of cabernet so we could see how well Groth wines age. I am a pretty tough customer when it comes to wine but I was blown away by how delicious the Groth wines were. Even the whites were amazing (and I never drink white wine). Even the older vintages were delicious (the noses were "funky" but the taste was smooth and still super fruity). I frequently shout from the rooftops about what a raw deal "wine clubs" are but dang it if I didn't sign up for Groth's club. Why? Because I will look forward to my shipment with giddy excitement like a kid on Christmas morning! That's how much I loved all of the wines here -- that never happens where I enjoy the entire portfolio. Groth's wine portfolio is limited but I think that's what makes them so great: focus on a few grapes and do them well. (Watch out for those wineries that make every varietal under the sun)! If you are a big red cabernet drinker, give this place a try. To top it all off, a few days after we arrived home we had a personalized, handwritten note from Izzy thanking us for our visit. Wonderful tasting experience yesterday morning! They are doing these on their covered, spacious patio. Very comfortable! Very pleasant atmosphere! Groth Vineyards&Winery is on a mission. It looks like an iconic California mission, right down to its pink adobe walls&tiled roof. They've expanded over the years (most recently in 2007) They're family owned, so they're very personable. The hosts make it leisurely and familial, discussing their winery's history. It's a bright, happy place, and its $35 tasting fee is sensible considering how steep prices can get in the Napa Valley. They've remained refreshingly unpretentious. Like many Napa Valley wineries, they are proud of their Cabernet Sauvignon, and rightly so. It's full&fruity. The California missions along the El Camino Real were intended for rest&relaxation, and Groth succeeds in its mission... whilst looking like one. We really wanted to love this place. The wines were very good. The tasting experience was not good. Here was our experience. We arrived in time for our tasting scheduled at 3pm. We quickly learned that we were the last tasting for the day. The young lady who wakes us to the wine expert was very rushed. She quickly asked if we had been to Groth before and before we could all answer - she was walking away throwing out a few facts about the vineyard. Two minutes later we were taken to our tasting table. Our expert was super nice. Super friendly. Super knowledgeable. He spent most of his time replacing the broken glasses on our table (placed broken - we didn't break them) and cleaning up outside tables etc. Our wine tasting included him telling us briefly about the wines in front of us and then leaving to clean up. He did tell us that we could buy one of the wines at Costco so that was nice. We just kind of sat there for about 20 minutes sipping our wines. We finally went to find him to settle up. He tried to tell us that our tasting was typically $75 but in celebration of our birthdays - it would be $50. We knew we had booked the $50 tasting. :). So... wanted to love it more than we did. I'm so happy my Aunt, who lived in Minneapolis at the time, told me about Groth. It is too funny that it is nearly in my backyard and I learned about it from someone who doesn't live here. Well thankfully I did learn about Groth! Their Cabs are extraordinary, particularly their Reserve. Coming to Groth set a new standard for me to hold other Cabs up to and it is hard for others to compete. We've been members ever since we visited as we were so impressed. Their Chardonnay is also very nice as it is balanced with a bit of fruit and a hint of oakiness. I am shocked that I can even enjoy the Sauvignon Blanc they produce as I don't normally drink that varietal. Groth does it right! We've been to several events they host and they know how to throw a party! For standard tastings it is always a pleasant experience and the staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and down-to-earth. I always feel welcome. The estate is lovely and striking with the vineyards surrounding. It is interesting to observe their processing from harvest to bottling as it is all done on-site. Suzanne Groth's artwork is beautiful and brightens up the tasting room. Everything at Groth is delicious, the service is wonderful and the environment is beautiful. read more

We visited Groth during our trip to Napa. It is near Silver Oak and other well known wineries. However, its Spanish architecture will give its destination away quickly. I reserved a tasting on CellarPass or VinoVisit - can't remember which one - but we really didn't need reservations. We ended up being the only tasting group in the room at the time. I enjoyed their tasting set-up. We were provided our own table with very comfortable high-back chairs. Our guide was wonderful. She was extremely knowledgeable about Groth wines, but wine varieties in general. Her great customer service made it even more enjoyable. We did not tour the property, but the ground appeared to be kept well maintained. I believe our tasting fee was comp with a specific amount of wine purchased, which we did. Tasting is $10, refunded with wine purchase. The woman who was pouring was quite friendly and though they don't have too many wines to try, they were all quite enjoyable. They even make a sauvignon blanc that doesn't do that flowery thing that gives me a headache. It was lovely sweet, perfect for a picnic. My favorite part was that our hostess allowed us to taste the cab opened earlier that morning against the same one that had just been opened...what a difference, really taught me something about the importance of decanting! read more

This was a very worthwhile wine tasting experience that kicked off my wine trip last summer. One of my fellow wineaux friends said this place was not to be missed, and I'm so glad we went. We totally connected with our wine educator and would have probably hung around to keep chatting with him had we not had another appointment. He took us around the winery and told us the story of how Groth came to be. I got the impression that he and their other employees are thankful to be working for a family owned winery instead of a place held by a larger corporation. The wine in our tasting was all good although I couldn't really discern a huge difference between their entry level cab and their reserve. I really appreciated getting a taste of an older vintage for comparison. We went home with the chardonnay, and I often get tempted to take home their sauvignon blanc when I see it at Costco. Long story short, I can count on two hands the wineries that I've purchased Cabernet Sauvignon from. To me, it grows everywhere but only a few have mastery of it. Groth is one of those few. I made a trip to Groth because I wanted to familiarize myself with their portfolio. I see them at restaurants, events, and every now and then a Groth Napa Valley Cabernet makes its way to my house courtesy of Groth fans. I have had a few different vintages of the Napa Valley Cabernet and I absolutely adore it, but don't purchase it as much as I should. So I get there a bit early as it was technically my first stop of the day and I'm allowed to go sit outside overlooking the courtyard. The grounds are stunning. Pulling up I felt like I was visiting a Spanish Mission. Then they come out for me and tell me they're ready and get seated at a nice table inside. The Sauvignon Blanc was crisp, juicy, refreshing and brisk- something I could see working with shellfish galore. Then was the Chardonnay which was nicely balanced between the oak/butter and the acidity, which kept it nicely balanced. Lots of apple-y notes. Then was the 2015 Napa Valley Cabernet (which I had not had) and it was delightful. Very clean, precise and elegant. Think of olives, toasty but restrained oak, eucalyptusy notes and darker, but not over-ripe fruits. A true testament to what a $50ish Napa Valley Cabernet should offer. It harkens back to Bordeaux for me. Kinda irresistible. Then came the 2015 Reserve. Oh boy- few are the Cabernet producers that I like and far fewer and individual Cabernets that rattle me to my core but man this one SHOOK me. Imagine all the elegance of the Napa Valley but with even more finesse. Even more textured, more classy. Just simply more of everything that I loved about the Napa Valley but cranked up x9000. Needless to say, I think it's pretty easy to imagine what went home with me. This is just winery #6 to make a Cabernet Sauvignon so downright heavenly that I had to purchase it. The company it keeps at home is Heitz, Corison, Blanchard, Chappellet and Daou. Not to say other producers don't make great wines but Groth is up there with those titans when it comes to California Cabernet. Looks like every year going forward Groth can count on seeing me coming back for that Reserve! The hard part will be leaving them alone as I hear that these wines age even more magnificently! read more
