I've been trying to get an appointment at Grove for the last few months, but being that they book up so quickly, and I never really know what my schedule is going to look like, it has made booking way in advance fairly difficult. I've gone to 5 different salons in the past 9 months, and even with presenting the same photo I've never really gotten the cut I wanted. I called yesterday in the off chance that there would be a last minute cancellation, and it must have been my lucky day because there was! Every one of the staff was so welcoming, great atmosphere, just what I had hoped for. But this 5 star review is really for Karen, who was so amazing, and actually listened and gave me EXACTLY what I was looking for. If you have curly or wavy hair and need a cut, go see Sondra. I got a cut with her this past weekend and feel like I finally got the haircut I've been waiting for for years (sad, but true). Other stylists were afraid to cut my long, wavy hair into layers and would just add a tiny bit of layering and dry it straight. Eh. It was ok. Essentially I got a seriously basic hair cut for way way way too much money. I tried to ask her to do more with the cut and suggested a few things. She then cut maybe three strands of my hair and asked if that was better. I didn't know how else to give her direction because I didn't know exactly what to say. You can't just say "make it better" ya know? Anyways I was going to do three stars because it wasn't bad but it was also not good, however I got this cut multiple weeks ago and I'm STILL bitter and upset about how expensive it was so I lowered the rating. Overall I would say go here if you have complicated hair, can articulate well exactly what you want, and are not short on money. I think next time I'll just take my chances with supercuts. read more

I came here after deciding that i wanted to cut my hair short. I had always had long hair so to cut it short was something scary for me and i didn't want to go to someone who was gonna cut it to short or just mess it up. After doing some serious research i narrowed it down to two place unfortunately my number 1 choice didn't have any appointment available soon so i decided to go with choice number 2 which was grove. I can honestly say it was the best thing it could had happen to me. I called in and they were able to squeeze me in short notice. When the day came i was nervous but when i arrived they greeted me so kindly that it ease some of my nervousness away. When it was time to cut my hair my hairstylist Sondra made sure she understood how i wanted it to get cut. Honestly the end result was amazing i felt so beautiful. I was so happy that i walked out feeling like a new person. Sondra is honestly the best. Sondra, Sondra, Sondra....you are magical with those lovely sheers. So, they prefer that you email them to make the appointment, and like to put a card down. If you are unsure about your schedule​ and are a flake they will charge you 50% (It think that is​​ what I was told) of the service you 'reserve' for. Since, I am usually in desperate need of a coif, that is not a concern of mine. So, making the appointment was a bit annoying, but once that was completed all was perfection. I arrived, checked in and had a lovely tea delivered right to me. Sondra came out of the wings just as I sat down to get a little decompressing in...right on flipping time. I loved that she did not make me wait a long time, one of my peeves. I like that my time was respected. So, I sat in the chair and she asked what I had in mind, asked for some pics if I had any. She listened to what I wanted....the last haircut​ I received I was not listened to. I went for a LOB and was given a short page-boy cut, not the sass I​ was looking for! So...I was totally listened to, and given the most gorgeous precise cut ever. I posted my new cut on ig, and have been given some serios love for my A-line...that is everything I asked for. I am quite picky and love my haircut! Though I live in Texas, I will try my best to have Sondra cut my locks when I visit! read more

I have been coming here for awhile and have always been pleased. The most recent visit, however, was for a blowout in advance of an early morning photo thing the next day. I was the last appointment of my stylist's day and felt like I was rushed through. I had blow dried my hair previously so he skipped the wash and blow dry and instead gave me a few curls and called me good. There were no additional treatment or solution to make them stay (although I had been clear that my photo thing was the following morning and have had that done at previous appointments). Would not have been as big a deal had the curls stayed, but they were gone within a couple of hours. And, of course, I was charged the full amount. I'll come back for a haircut but need to find another spot for blowouts. read more

I was helped by Kevin. He did an amazing job! Apparently he's just starting out as a hair stylist but his haircut was so much better than the haircuts I normally get at upscale salons. I am from a European country and I wanted to get a layered hair cut like I get it at home but it's hard to explain what I want, especially since I never am quite sure what it is that I want and I change my opinion every hour or so. This was no problem for Kevin. He listened to me, discussed what he thought was right for me, and then executed his plan perfectly. Pricing was good, too. The place looks nice. Other staff was friendly too. They sell cute jewelry. I like walk-ins myself but since the place is so good it's hard to get an appointment instantly but I got an appointment at the beginning of the week for the end of the week so not too bad. read more

Though YELP has Grove as being in the Berkeley Hills the salon is actually located in Albany (~ 2 blocks South of the border with Berkeley) so.. easy and FREE parking available. Chase Michna has been my stylist for nearly the past year and I am always at ease with her. I like the way she asks of my needs & preferences, is open to listening to my suggestions(realistic or not : ) and always provides realistic options as to cut & style. I do view her as an artist creating on a multi-dimensional canvas. My hair is either wavy or straight, dependent upon the season and I am always pleased with the end result. I need to mention that I was initially led to Chase via a colleague whose new hair style I had admired. Lastly, the salon is esthetically beautiful, has cool artwork hanging on its walls from a local artist, has an outdoor lounge and is very well v-e-n-t-i-l-a-t-e-d. read more

Since I am now in the Albany area I was looking for a new salon and had seen Grove multiple times as I was walking down Solano. I was sad to leave my old stylist since he had done these really fine highlights on me for awhile, but Sondra did an amazing job and literally gave me exactly what I was looking for. Yay! Had a cut and lowlights with Chase on 13Jul18 - so love it. I'm pretty new to color - have only had it done professionally a few times. No one ever notices that I got color - which is what I want (trying to tone done the grays coming in especially around the temples, which is glaring in dark brown hair). As far as cut - we talked, I showed her a pic of bangs I wanted - she did it spot on - they were not just your normal bangs. I have curly hair - she knows curly hair guys. I look super cute if I do say so myself. Grove also has great espresso and fruit water - love fruit water. Lots of street parking. read more

I just had the worst response from this place. Totally disrespectful and humiliating. The problem is that it came from one of the owners. I dyed my hair last July and I made it clear that I have grey hair that I'd like to dye. It didn't cross my mind to check the service after I was done as it's not my first time there. Three days later I could see the grey hair clearly. I was upset but I also traveled and I had no time to call/go back. I also was hesitant to talk about it with them again as I didn't need to hear the word (sorry) because it wouldn't help my situation. But I had decided that I will not dye my hair there again. Two weeks ago, I called to schedule an appointment to have my hair cut (only) then they suggested the same person who dyed my hair and that's when I said" No, I don't want this person as I have a concern" they listened to my concern and said that I should definitely talk to this person about it and I said okay. The person called few days after and said exactly what I didn't want to hear (sorry, I wish if you spoke about it earlier we could've provided you with a touch up service within two weeks) but since it's after two weeks she can't really offer me anything else. So, I said " Then the damage is done"! The next day I asked for a cancellation for my appointment for hair cut and also, the owner's contacts to call directly. Then I got a response from one of the owners today saying that" Unfortunately, we don't feel we are able to provide you with the experience you are looking for so we have gone ahead and cancelled your future appointment"! First, I cancelled my appointment two days ago. Second, he stated that I got my service in August and that wasn't accurate. Third, I shared the whole email with a native English speaker and she got the same vipes that I got from his mail. I really am so upset about their way of handling the whole issue. However glad that at least they will refund the money I paid then. I made it clear to them that they lost a client and I will make sure to put it in their reviews. read more

I was seated after 5 minutes of waiting, which was awesome. My stylist was Chase, and she was super cool. She gave me exactly what I wanted! Sondra is absolutely wonderful. I've been coming to her for several years. I come in without a picture and just a general idea of what I like for my haircut. She takes time to ask me questions about what I'd like, gives me suggestions and the haircut comes out amazing every time. I don't like to fuss with my hair much so I am amazed how long the style lasts and easy to work with. As for the hair colors. She gets what I am looking for. I like to cover my grays and bleached strands in fun colors that give subtle results: dark reddish purple; dark green and purple; this time it's cobalt blue. It's just a hint of color against my black hair and when it fade, it fades in a kaleidoscope of shades and colors. I like that Sondra picks up on this need of mine to have fun with colors and see them change over time and comes up with the coolest combinations of colors. read more

SIMPLY AMAZING .... I rarely write reviews, but I had such a great experience with Chase at the Grove Salon this week and just have to share it: The salon itself is beautiful with its fresh open atmosphere. You are greeted by friendly staff and offered tea, coffee or infused water and invited to relax in the waiting room or on the outdoor deck in the back. I have to start by admitting that I was truly embarrassed to show Chase the hot mess of hair I was hiding from her when I walked in. My naturally curly hair was frizzy dull and damaged, even when I would put a lot of time into straightening and styling my hair it would end up limp and flat. I really thought it was beyond help at this point and had resigned myself to a life of only ponytails and hats. Chase wasn't dissuaded at all and knew immediately how to remedy the problem. I left my messy hair in her hands and trusted her to make the best decisions ... I'm SO glad I did because, WOW, talk about an extreme makeover! After consulting with me I was given a long overdue cut .... Chase is quite the skilled artist with her scissors ~ even while it was wet, my hair started feeling healthy, and I could see curls forming again - it was coming back to life in front of my eyes! I was given a deep conditioning treatment, color and my first balayage (its gorgeous btw!) Chase walked me through the entire process, explaining each product right down to the brand of the color being used. She showed me how to dry and curl my hair, then even a new way to use my brush - who knew Id been doing it wrong all these years :) I was helped to shop for the right styling products and made my next two appointments to come back. Long story short ... I walked out looking like a new person I have a beautiful hairstyle and color now that I thought i would only see in pictures of other people, never in the mirror!!
