I've eaten here a few times over the years and it never disappoints. There aren't a lot of dining options between Baker City and Redmond so when my fave place in Prairie City is closed, the Grubsteak is my go-to. This is cattle country, right? So you're not going to go wrong with a steak. The prime rib here will put a smile on your face unless you have your heart set on gluten free tofu or something. They also have a friendly bar that is mostly locals but so long as you don't sit there with your big city snowflake attitude you'll find the folks at the next table or barstool to be friendly enough. I always enjoy reading the picky, whiny negative reviews over trivial complaints posted by these butthurt children. Want to know why the locals don't like you? Try not being so whiny. These ranchers, farmers and blue collar types work for a living at jobs you wouldn't last five minutes at. Have some respect. I like John Day. Not my favorite little burb in Eastern Oregon but it beats the pants off of downtown Portland. I also like the townies. Well, I tend to like anyone who has a weathered face and hands that have done real work but that's just me. As a Veteran I am always treated well out here. Seems like I'm always sitting next to some Marine at the bar who's eaten some of the same dirt that I did. If you want to be treated well by strangers, try being more respectful. You are in their playpen so park your attitude in the trunk of your Prius before you head inside. I'm already salivating over my next return trip for a real man meal here! read more

Visited. 5/23/2018 This place is 4 Stars for the Prime Rib Dinner alone. Very tender and very flavorful. Comes with a baked potato, veggies, hot roll, and soup or salad. Good meal for the price. Service can be a little slow but it gets done. There is a full liquor bar and pool tables in another room. The menu is extensive with lots to choose from. Sadly their menu isn't shown on yelp so no one knows the great food available. I'm posting lots of pictures to help. The fried Mushrooms are crunchy outside and Juicy inside. A good appetizer. The menu posted is not the current menu or prices. Mostly Mexican food and burgers. They do have rib eye and prime rib. Several people came in same time. Only one person working dining rooms so service a little slow but she was very friendly and apologetic for wait. Food was ok..... They were out of burgers because cook forgot to take meat from freezer. Shrimp salad was only lettuce shrimp salsa and sour cream. Waitress didn't want to serve with rice and beans because they smelt bad. Salsa was very funky tasting so did not eat. Loaded French dip was very small but good. The chips are fresh to order and home made....very addictive. Guacamole was pretty good and also fresh made. So you def want to give them a try read more

I have been to this place several times. Mostly because there are few other options . The food is just ok. Not very good. The service is always bad. Went there this last week. The hostess got us water. I drank all of it before a server had come by. Went to the hostess for more water as no one else was coming apparently. When we finally did get a server she did not introduce herself of apologize for the wait. She just said "what do you want?" I did ask her for water and she said she would get it but never did. read more

We didn't eat here, but Hubby and I had lots of fun in the bar. The locals were all so nice and very chatty. We really felt like they welcomed us with open arms. The drinks were strong and they had a pretty good glass of red for me. They have pool tables and a TV for entertainment, but if those same locals are there, you won't need anything but good conversation. read more

id say 2.5stars to be exact. First the decor is miner camp which fits the town. The menu is a little awkward and the food was just ok. We ordered Mozzarella cheese sticks which were perfectly cooked and really good but NO dipping mariana!?! They only have ranch, that sucked! lol The bar seems to be the hotspot which looked like a great place to trow some back but had to keep driving. No many places in this town, better food choices would be a big hit here. read more

After being recommended with expectations of a quality prepared steak I was sadly disappointed, ordered the prime rib steak medium rare with mushrooms, mushrooms and onions and served well done with no adds... 20 minutes later I had to walk to the kitchen to tell them to put it in a to go box as my family was finished with their meals. The brisket was supposed to be slow cooked for 6 to 8 hours. Tasted like a good year Radial with barbecue sauce on it. Tough as hell. I ordered a glass of Pinot noir. The bourbon salmon was overcooked and dry. The prime rib was also overcooked. Some of the wait staff were good. We will not go back.

Wait staff acted like we were an inconvenience, took a long time to get coffee, water, and take our orders. Food was poor quality. Vegetables were rubbery. The salmon should be removed from the menu, and was so bad I stopped eating after one bite. I suspect everything on my plate was frozen and then heated in a microwave. You would be better off getting a frozen meal at the grocery store and microwaving yourself. read more

This place is great. We sat in the bar. Our waitress was Shannon. If you want great service and perfect food come here. We had the large cut prime rib. So good. We shared it because we are traveling through and did not want to have left overs. Left enough room for desert to take back to the room. Wow. Had lunch here with my wife and two girls and it was awesome!! I had the golden nugget burger and even after I was so full I couldn't stop eating the food was that good. First we made a mistake and followed the hype in a magazine about 1188. Luckily we found out sooner than a full-blown dinner there that our far better experience is just two doors east at Grubsteak. Excellent service and really good food. Go where the locals go, especially in a small town. The former is trying to be big city in style and pricing but comes off as pretentious. The latter is just a long-time local hangout, well-established. Make Grubsteak your stop next time you're hungry in John Day. read more

Before visiting John Day, I did my online research looking for a dinner restaurant for our family to eat at. The Front Desk staff at the Best Western recommended Grubsteak and even provided us with a 10% discount coupon, so guess where we ate dinner? The restaurant was practically empty upon our arrival but it took a very long time to get our dinners. The prices were average. My husband and I both ate their meatloaf dinner and were somewhat disappointed. We figured they could have made the meatloaf a lot more exciting which it wasn't, it was just plain and kinda boring. It was our waitress's first day there so not sure if that's the reason for the slow service. read more

Nah I'll pass waitress very rude and whispered to a regular I believe because we were at "their" usual table or that we were with friends and talking and laughing the people sat next to us and got up and walked to the other side the old lady waitress then tended only to them while never bring to go boxes or asking us if we even wanted water? With a group with a $100 tab plus you get no tip! You never treat your customers with such disrespect never! Do not bother to eat here. The DQ burger would be better. Steak was tasteless. veggie was frozen corn microwaved beyond taste and texture. Wine was red vinegar. We ate the salad and left. Felt sorry for the waitress...even she was embarrassed. read more

Umm.. it was akin to The Sizzler. If in the area I'd probably go back but I would specify that I don't want sauce on my steak. I'm not entirely sure what the sauce was but there was a lot of it and it wasn't something I enjoyed. The service was great, there must be a dish that's really good. Consider your options. I've visited John Day a lot for work. I usually do my best to get into the Snaffle Bit (some great steaks there). I thought on this trip I'd try the Grub Steak, one of the oldest-still-in-operation restaurants in town. It was disappointing. I ordered the prime rib with house salad, with signature blue cheese dressing, and a Manhattan (with house bourbon) Well the dressing was heavy on the mayo and lacked the savory taste of blue cheese. The dinner roll had the consistency and taste of a bisquick biscuit, not a soft chewy dinner roll. The Manhattan was made with house whisky (not bourbon), and the steak although decent certainly didn't make up for the other failings. Next time I'm in town and want steak, I'm returning to the Snaffle Bit. read more

The waitstaff were amazingly friendly and attentive. The food was ok. It wasn't bad, but overpriced for what was served. I ordered the teriyaki chicken salad while my sister ordered the cranberry chicken salad. Both were identical. Pre cubed chicken over iceberg lettuce. The toppings were the only thing that separated the types of salad. Of special mention were the dressings (poppy seed and raspberry vinaigrette). Both were amazing. It's just sad they were put on such mediocre salads. The salads at about $13 each, probably cost the $2.00 a serving. Disappointing. read more

Stopped in john day for the night. Saw the menu in the office of the motel were staying in, sounded good and it was! Excellent service, i had the prime rib, small cut, cooked just as i asked, excellent. my dad had the federer burger and he said it was one of the best burgers hes had in years! Run fast in the other direction! Had dinner with a friend because next door was closed...Big Mistake! Food was less than uninspiring, service the same. Salad, vegetables, meat, coffee...all of it bad. Never had such unloved food in a place that appears to be a "diner" restaurant...any of the chain restaurants are way better. Steer clear and go next door. The only reason this gets one star is they had a decent beer to drink and it's the lowest it goes. Love this place! Each time we are in John Day we just have to stop in and eat here. Waitress Lisa dose an amazing job of covering the needs of any size table. Their tender prime rib and steaks are prepared the way we request (well done to medium-rare) the first time. Their desserts are fresh and delightful.
