Service was stellar, the peel-and-eat shrimp was tasty, and the crab stuffed flounder tasted great. Huge windows let in all the sunlight and showed the wharf in all its glory. The reviews and the pricing would lead you to believe it was a sit down restaurant, but counter ordering was the reality, like a deli. For two people to eat without drinks was $90! I visited this counter service spot unsure of why it doesn't receive very favorable reviews. It offers many of the same amenities as other nearby waterfront restaurants, but of course you do not need to pay a tip or wait in a ridiculous long line here. Their selection is sort of limited with mostly fried items and no gumbo. They do have a fish of the day which is $2 more than their founder platter with crab which is the priciest item on the menu. Of course, they have a full bar with specialty cocktails on its own menu. I chose the flounder with their famous slaw. Our small group sat out by the water on a covered patio overlooking several large boats. Although we sat next to the doorway, which was pretty busy with customers and busboys coming and going, it turned out to be a pretty good table out of the sun. My meal turned out to be really good, so I was a happy camper. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food as well, so maybe we just came at the right time, and hit it on a good day. As we were leaving, we saw a much longer line to just get into the restaurant, so that could deter some guests that are impatient. read more

It's hard to be mad about the no reservations policy, or the wait, when the food and atmosphere make up for it. Ee walked up early Saturday evening not knowing if the long line trailing down the front steps was a wait for those to get their names down or were waiting to be seated. Luckily a group ahead of us explained that you order your food at the counter then find your seats. There were 6 of us in our group and easily found seating outside. There were groups of people of all sizes and ages and still, Grumbles held every group easily. We had the fried fish tacos, shrimp skewers, burger, crab cakes and tuna bowl. After sharing with one another, our faves were the shrimp plates- though all were great! If you're looking for a family friendly place with fantastic views of the bay side- this is the perfect spot. The food is okay. The fried shrimp was chewy and a bit over cooked. The fried fish was okay. The crab cake was salty. The ceviche was fresh and very limey, the fish inside was a bit over cooked, it was tough. The keylime pie did not taste like keylime. It had a tiny hint of lime. Overall, it's just okay. Grumbles Seafood is a solid choice if you're craving classic coastal flavors while in Port A. Everything they cook is caught in the Gulf of Mexico. They have a waterfront location with a great view of the water. You place your food order at the counter and then it is delivered to your table once prepared. I ordered the fried green tomatoes appetizer crusted with corn meal and served with ranch dressing. The fried green tomatoes were perfectly crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and seasoned just right, comfort food at its best. I also tried the bacon-wrapped shrimp special with a teriyaki sauce. The bacon-wrapped shrimp were juicy shrimp with smoky, crispy bacon with a sauce that didn't overpower the seafood. I also enjoy the shrimp tacos with an option of blackened or fried shrimp, I usually get blackened, served in tortillas with slaw and avocado. It is normally served with a side of rice and black beans, but I substitute it for a side garden salad with ranch. Everything came out hot and well-prepared. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, and the service was friendly and attentive. If you're looking for good seafood and Southern-style favorites in a laid-back setting, Grumbles Seafood is definitely worth the visit. read more

Visited here while on vacation. Some of the plates we saw looked good however I ordered the corn chowder and a crabcake on the side. My crabcake was average, but I absolutely did not like the taste of the corn chowder. It had a clear broth, not a creamy broth. I just didn't like it at all. We ordered the shrimp and bacon hush puppies and they were OK. The fried shrimp was average and so was the coleslaw. We also had the Keylime pie and it tasted like a combination of a key lime pie and cheesecake. Overall, the plates were just average. The best item that we had were the fried green tomatoes. Still grumbling about Grumbles...The building and staff were great, the top shelf skinny margarita was good, but the pina colada and stuffed flounder were atrocious. The flounder was unbelievably overcooked and the "crab cake" stuffing was the worst mushy mash of disgusting excuse for a crab cake Ive ever had. The pina colada was some horrid sauce that tasted like chemicals. For that money, make something real and fresh without the bs corn slurp and who knows what disgusting powerfully flavored chemical additives. We came here after hearing that Virginias on the Bay (right next door) had an hour and half wait. Walked in to Grumbles and immediately walked to the ordering area. We found a nice table by the marina so we could watch the boats come in and out. Nice area right at sunset. I don't know what kind of magic they have going on but get this....NO FLIES or any other bugs were bothering us or other people that already had their food!! How's that possible?!!!! Anyway...back to the story. So we ordered and sat down. The wait for the food was a little long but 1) we came right at peak dining time, 2) there were others there before us, 3) it's the peak of vacation time right before school starts back up, 4) I'd rather be sitting down drinking my iced tea and waiting instead of sitting in front in the parking lot waiting...so we were ok with it and expected it. Some people (namely one lady) was not happy and complained constantly to any staff within ear shot and more so after their food arrived sending some items back and demanding they be taken off the bill. Geez, Karen much!!?? Our food arrived, it was presented nicely and after taking our first bite...we were hooked!! O. M. G!!!! I ordered the pound of Peel & Eat Shrimp which was already deveined for me!! Seasoned nicely...not too spicy although I'm not afraid of a little heat being from Texas. Husband ordered 9 piece fried shrimp with Cole slaw and he also was very impressed. And our son ordered Popcorn shrimp off of the kids menu. He recently started liking shrimp and he cleaned his plate saying it was the best he's had!! Hubby finished my shrimp since I couldn't finish the pound... which he was totally ok with. The only thing that was left on the plate was the Cole slaw. He doesn't like coleslaw and I was too full to try it. Overall we decided to stay another day in Port A and also decided to go to Grumbles also before we leave!! So tonite I'll be getting the One Pound Peel & Eat shrimp (hubby can finish what I don't eat) and the boys will get what they want. The only negative I have is: 1) that the table and chairs were a little bit sticky...we put down the brown paper towels (provided on the tabletop) down as basically place mats and on our chairs since we were wearing shorts and legs were slightly sticking to the chairs. But that's it!! 2) Maybe the Karen seated next to us but you get those people out there in the wild!! Quite possibly the worst $65 I've ever spent on eating out, I ordered the combo platter with fried oysters and fried fish, a fried shrimp platter and an order of hushpuppies. The fried fish was soggy, and the breading had no flavor. The fried oysters were practically inedible, with a quite unpleasant texture and very slimy wet on the inside. The hushpuppies were very dense and chewy, and the remoulade it came with was pretty heavy on the Dijon. The only saving grace this place has is that you can watch the dolphins while you eat on the deck outside. 2 stars, because the miller lite on draft was only $3.50. read more

The food is average, but the atmosphere is pretty neat. I went with a group at around 6pm on a Tuesday during the summer holiday season and though the restaurant was slammed the staff was taking care of the line at a pretty quick pace. The dining area and restrooms were pretty clean, just beware the sinks. They're super powerful and splashed up all over my shirt. I'd also recommend bringing a pair of sunglasses with you as the windows are large and let in the sun, and there's a high chance you won't necessarily get too much of a choice in where you sit with the dinner rush crowd and end up staring right into the glare like some of our party did. Our order came out a lot faster than we expected as there were seven of us and it was packed, my choice the Shrimp Burger with Fried Green Tomato. The Burger had plump and juicy shrimp that was seasoned pretty well, and though the breading on the tomatoes was good, they were pretty soggy. They were fine on the burger as it somewhat hid the sogginess but I pulled off the tomato topping the bun because it was just too much. One of our party members ordered a plate of the Fried Green Tomatoes alone and we both agreed that it felt like they'd sat out too long. The lettuce and buns on my Burger were crisp and soft respectively, but as a whole it was a little too oily for me. I was also able to try some of the Fried Oysters and wished I had ordered these instead. Unlike the breading on the Fried Green Tomatoes, these had an excellent crunch to them. The oysters themselves had a good chewiness and were excellent without the sauce it came with, but were just as delicious with said sauce. A lot of our meals came with a mountain of shoestring fries. No one made it through even half and it seemed a waste if you didn't take them as leftovers. They were alright but pretty average, at best described as addicting from the salt, but nothing more. They tasted best with the cocktail sauce or specialty sauces that came with the dishes. I might give Grumbles another try but I could also easily live without making the second trip. I've simply had better seafood on the coast but if you aren't in the mood for cooking like we were, it is indeed better than ordering a pizza or going through a fast food drive-thru. read more

Let's start with the food. I ordered the crab cakes, tuna appetizer and "world famous hush puppies". Crab cakes were meh. The tuna appetizer was served on a bed of white a bit of wilted/brown/slimy lettuce...it was disgusting. I lost my appetite with that one. I don't know how the hush puppies are world famous. They were sooooooo dense...had no fluffiness to them and almost no flavor. They just tasted like bland corn. Husband ordered the crab stuffed flounder and he said it was pretty good. He said it was more like a crab cake than lump crab. Now for the wait. This time of year, the wait everywhere is ridiculous unless you have a reservation. So I can't fault them for that. It's just the busy season. When we got in line to order, we knew it would be a while, but it wound up being over an hour just to get to the counter to order. Once we were almost at the front, a server came to tell everyone in line that once you ordered, it would be almost an hour before you got food. It was frustrating, but I really appreciated them communicating the wait to us. Once we ordered, they were quick about getting drinks out A photographer came by and asked to take our photo complimentary and that he would print it out for us. He came back and handed us 1/3 photos and said that was complimentary but the other ones we would have to pay for. He had already printed the other 2 out and put them in little cardboard frame covers. After a frustrating experience, I took the complimentary one and said no to the other 2. I wondered what he would do with the two pictures I said no to...he took them out of the frame and put them in a drawer with a huge stack of other photos people had said no too. It felt so wasteful. I can't even imagine how many printed photos they discard every single day. Why not have them sync with an iPad and show all the options and THEN print them, once people pay?
