I didn't camp here but I went to mine for gems and crystals and omg!!! I found 3 arrow heads, aquamarine, opal, ruby's and so much more! I definitely recommend this place for mining and camping. The bathrooms are better than any other campsite over ever been to! Super clean campsite!

Definitely a beautiful relaxing place! We had a beautiful campsite and it was incredibly relaxing. The campsites are definitely close and you can hear most things your neighbors are doing BUT everyone was so friendly it wasn't so bothersome. You will hear the train but to us it wasn't bothersome. Campsites are not level so bring materials to level your camper. The bathrooms were clean and up kept very well along with the laundry facilities. The negatives includes the close camp sites, tight parking and pull in space, and the sewer pipes are next to your picnic table which can be a little less pleasing. Many positives include the view, the peaceful water rushing, ability to swim right out in front of campsite, the facilities, many places to fish along river road, the owners at grumpy bear were very pleasant and the small campground feel and vibes. Go check out the Juney Whank hiking trail where you can see three different waterfall and tube down Deep Creek, eat at Nate & Nicks in Bryson City for amazing pizza and unique beer, stop at a pull off on Old River Road and catch you some trout and catfish, and grab you an ice cream cone at The Chocolate Shoppe in Bryson City. Very nice little town and place to stay!

The view right outside our campsite.

We chose this place because of the reviews, I have to say, those reviews are absolutely true!! Jerry is so kind and welcoming. We got in around 9-10pm and he came and helped guide us into our spot. We had some issues with the water pressure and out toilet running and he did what he could to help us. We eventually realized we just needed to put a pressure regulator on our water hook up and all was good. We really appreciate that he went above and beyond to help us. We felt very welcomed here, having 4 kids can be overwhelming for some but we never got the feel that they were a bother. Overall next time we are in the area we will definitely try to score an RV spot here again. They grounds are also well maintained and clean as well as the bath house and laundry room. Do yourself a favor and stay here.

This was our first visit here. It is 5 min from Bryson City. They have a bath house with 6 Gender Neutral bathrooms. They have a washer dryer in the bath house you can use for $2/wash $2/dry. This place is immaculate. You are right on the river and there is not another campground like it. The owner even came out and helped us get set up when we arrived. It is private, but close to town and shopping. A great choice for Western NC.

This is a quiet, clean & well maintained RV park. The owner, Jerry, is most hospitable and accommodating. We did not pull a car & he graciously offered a ride into town, then told us to call & he'd come pick us up. Easy access for RV's and has beautiful sites on the river, views of the mountains. We were here four nights & loved it! Highly recommended

Coming from Miami from a long road trip we decided to stay here. Jerry was super and very extremely attentive he waited for us to arrive in order to greet us and show us around. He was very nice and friendly. This campground is good if you have an RV with everything since the floors can get muddy. This campground by far has the best bathrooms I would definitely come back here again.

New, new, new and squeaky clean restrooms and bath house. This place is a welcome new addition to the area (and big change) from the other worn out campgrounds nearby. With many sites just a couple steps from the bank of the large Tuckaseegee river, you can tell this place was created for campers by campers. All camper sites are full-hookup sites with a picnic table. Water, electric and sewer connections are all easy to access and are all situated together at the rear corner of the site. There is also a large tent camping area right next to the river. Jerry, the owner strives to make everyone's stay fantastic. Southern hospitality abounds. Staying here is more like staying at your friends place (friends who just happen to have a place right on the river!) This is my second time back in two months and Grumpy Bear has absolutely become my "go to" in the Bryson City area. There is so much to do on the area and this campground makes a fantastic launching off point for all there is to do. Tons of hiking, fishing, tubing, are around, as is the Southern entrances to Smoky Mountain. National Park. The town itself is known for the train rides and great shopping, including a neat outdoor outfitter where I bought a kayak the last visit. Hands down the best place around to stay. There are no permanent campers here, (compare that to the others). Although it's mostly all short-term stays, the folks in the site next to me are full-time RV'rs They liked it so much here that decided to just stay here for a month. Wow, I am jealous indeed. Bottom line: You can't go wrong staying here. Heartily recommended!

Clean, comfortable, cozy, and great owners. Located very close to Bryson City. We stayed for three days and enjoyed the sound of the river that is directly adjacent to most sites. Great farm stand just across the road as well.

This is a view of the mountains from our campsite.

We were just passing back through Bryson City over the Fourth of July weekend after camping all week. We stopped to do laundry and figured we'd see if anyone had a campsite available. Another campground recommended we call Kirkland's, and we're so glad they did. Jason was one of the most welcoming and accommodating campground hosts we've ever met. He returned our call quickly, let us know he had a few sites available on a first-come, first-served basis, and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. We weren't able to get a creekside site because we booked last minute, but honestly, that didn't matter. You can hear the beautiful creek throughout the campground, and the peaceful atmosphere is exactly what we had been looking for. One of the things we loved most was the location. It truly feels like you've driven 30 minutes into the mountains, away from everything, when in reality you're only about 12-15 minutes from downtown Bryson City, the grocery stores, and the local produce stand. It was the perfect balance of convenience and seclusion. The campground is spotless, with clean bathhouses, laundry facilities, water and electric hookups, firewood, ice, and even a trout pond where you can fish. The sites felt private despite the campground's cozy size, and the mountain views peeking through the trees made it even more special. Jason was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and gave us fantastic recommendations, including where to enjoy a safe and relaxing tubing trip. That local advice made a huge difference in our visit. We also loved meeting the campground's sweet dog and friendly cat--they added even more charm to an already wonderful place. If you're looking for a campground that's quiet, peaceful, welcoming, and genuinely cared for, this is it. We left feeling like we'd found a home away from home. Whenever we return to Bryson City, Kirkland's Creek Campground will be our first call. Thank you, Jason, for your incredible hospitality. We can't wait to come back!

The creek is beautiful, and falling asleep to the sound of the water was a highlight. The staff was accommodating and allowed us to switch to an RV site so we could park next to our tent, which we appreciated. Looking back, I wish we'd asked more questions because the covered tent sites looked much more private and would have been a better fit for us. This is a great campground for families, groups, and anyone wanting to enjoy tubing. The bathhouses were clean, and the camp store had everything we could have needed. The tubing was a lot of fun, though the creek is shallow and rocky in places, so expect a few bumps along the way! If you're looking for a lively campground with plenty of activities, I highly recommend it. If your goal is total peace and seclusion, you may want to look at some of the quieter campgrounds nearby. Overall, we had a great stay and would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting the Bryson City area.

Had a great time and loved that I fell out a couple of times and could not stop laughing! Need to know that for parking you need a card no cash. Only $6 to tube all day. Would have liked someone helping tie the tubes to the top of the car but we managed. If you are with people I suggest getting a cable to connect together because you will get seperated and a paddle or stick to get unstuck or move in different directions is a good idea. They have large bathrooms to change in also. Lots of places to just hang out on the side or side of the water to relax. The waterfall was a beautiful place to stop and relax.

This campground / RV park is one of the few places that allows people from OTHER campgrounds to use their showers (for a small fee, of course). You just drive into the parking lot, find the trailer near the entrance with the small golf cart next to it, knock on the door, and the man who runs the campground will come out. Each shower is $5 but you'll feel like a million bucks afterwards. Try to bring exact change since he may not have change. If the office trailer with the golf cart isn't obvious, there should be a paper posted on the door of the little building closest to the road directing you where to go. Though the interior was very dimly lit, the showers in the women's bathhouse seemed clean. The toilets were not clean, though--I advise not using them. There are also electrical outlets around the sink where you can charge your stuff. No one else entered the bathhouse while I was in it. Bear Hunter Campground is pretty close to the Bryson City downtown (though you'll definitely need a car). Hike all day in the Smokey Mountains, take a shower here, and go back to your campground to rest at night.

DEEP CREEK TUBE RENTAL operates out of the general store for Smoky Mountain Campground. It is the…read morelast tube rental opportunity on the right side of Deep Creek Road before it enters into the park. This became our first adventure of a week long vacation as we stopped here during the drive to our destination. We checked with several of the nearby tube rental businesses and decided on this one not only because of their location, but also because they did not charge us to use the life vests required for anyone under 13 years old. Other places either charged an additional fee or wanted a deposit. The staff was friendly and I even had a little sports banter with the owner, who had a God-awful Alabama hat on... Go GA Bulldogs!!! LOL But where they earned 5-stars was because of their honest dealings . We visited two days after heavy rain had swollen the river. While the overall volume was significantly down, it was still fairly swift. This caused a few traumatic moments as three adults had to fish three kids (6,7,8) out of the creek in fast moving current once they reached the take-out point near the bridge. This of course was not the rental companies fault, BUT it would have been useful to know the best places to exit the water. Some sort of map or signage along the creek would have been extremely helpful. Exiting the creek was so difficult by the bridge that safety for the youngest became an alarming issue and two rafts (and a pair of shoes) were lost in the battle between holding on to the kids or holding on to the rafts. At checkout the owners charged us about $55 per raft, but told us they would refund the money IF the rafts were found by the end of the day. They were indeed found and the owners not only texted us the same day, but had the money in our account before weeks end. I TRULY appreciate the honesty because we would have been none the wiser! [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] Aside from the difficulty exiting the creek, they also had a wipeout on a bottleneck rapid further upstream that really traumatized the youngest of our group. I didn't think the poor kid would ever go in water again, but luckily a few hugs and a slice of pizza brought him back from a dark place. So for families with kids single digit in age, I'd recommend putting your rafts in at Tom's Creek Falls when volume is up (and not the one near Indian Creek) which avoids the more challenging area for tubers. In retrospect I would have dropped my crew at the trailhead and driven back to the General Store and waited to help them exit there. It would have given them a longer ride in the river. Still, it did make for a lively story during the remainder of our vacation! It's amazing how little boys go from scared and crying in the moment to superhero's who called on their Aquaman powers when retelling the tale days later! LOL PS - The tube rentals are ALL DAY until closing (7pm). Cost was $8/tube with a dollar off coupon for checking-in on yelp. BE SAFE and enjoy! 2022 / 93
