The food is very good, but the service has been terrible each time. If you want to take your time and enjoy great food, this is definitely a good place to go. But if you want attentive service, then I would pass. The servers don't check on you and it can take awhile to even get greeted. We were looking for an interesting restaurant between where I live in BedStuy and where my friend lives in Bushwick, and we found Guacuco at the halfway point and had a very nice meal there. We tried 2 of the vegetarian arepas, a coconut shake, and a Mojito, and they were all good. We were surprised that a Venezuelan restaurant had so many vegetarian options for my friend who is vegan/vegetarian, but they looked so good, I got them too! We went for an early dinner on a Friday night in October, and we were the only diners for the hour we were there. I would consider going here even if it wasn't the most convenient. I've been looking for a place like this for a couple months, so you can imagine how happy I was to finally find a spot that is affordable and very tasty. The portion sizes are legit, by the way. They definitely don't skimp over here. Food is always served fresh - you can tell they haven't precooked their food and then throw it in the microwave when you place your order. Fantastic food with lots of flavor and quick delivery! I took a chance and went for delivery for the first time eating here. I was wowed by their speedy service and impeccable delivery and presentation of the food. Not only are portion generous, they even gave me extra sauce at no additional charge. I ordered the veggie empanada, rice and beans and the tostones. All arrived warm and neatly presented. The green sauce that each dish comes with is out of this world. Definitely a treat. I have so many good things to say about this place . I came a little after noon and it was nice and empty . This spot is close to home so I wanted to check it out . I love the decor it's simple but homey and quaint . I chose to eat the A paisa and the E vegatariana . I had the Paisa first which is a arepa with this Venezuelan cheese . The arepa was crispy and soft and the cheese was bitter and soft but with the arepa and the different sauces it really took the bitterness away . The server was also very helpful she explained the sauces to me . Very sweet and attentive . My favorite was the orange one soooo good ! Now the best part of my little meal was the E Vegatariana. I mean it's this huge empanada with black beans,paisa cheese, plantains, jalapeños and toasted coconut like whattttttt. I saw it on the menu and I just had to try it . One of the best things I've ever eaten . You have the sweet from the plantains and the beans and the toasted coconut then the savory from the cheese and the spicy from the jalapeños . I mean even the ginger ale tasted good lol . And let me tell you this food is made with love and it's hearty that I was pretty full for the rest of the day. Still glad to have this place in the neighborhood, and go regularly. My favorite arepas are ham and cheese and pabellon (shredded beef). All are good though, might as well throw the pernil (pork) in there too. Hell, can't forget about the chicken salad either. They shake up a great cocktail. I'd still like to see more of a combo offering, like an arepa with a side. 1 arepa isn't enough, 2 is slightly too much. For a casual place, the cost adds up when you're going a la carte. Biggest gripe is takeout and service. Seem to bring food out whenever they feel like it and your partner might be done with their meal by the time you get yours. I learned about this place from their first Bushwick location and this one is just as good!! I love the colorful design of the interior; it helps to brighten the experience and adds to the Venezuelan vibe. When it comes to food and drink there's so many goodies it's hard to choose from, but you can never go wrong with a Cocada (virgin or alcoholic) and Pabellon Criollo. There empanadas are also an excellent choice if you're not hungry enough for a full meal. Share the love by trying their different sauces- green is my favorite but the ketchup-based sauce is also amazing. I also probably should've led with this but if you've never had an actual arepa before you HAVE TO TRY! I recommend the Leo's Arepa named after the owner; their pernil is seasoned and cooked to perfection. If you do not do this, beware, because once the word gets out it will be packed with what we saw on one night - hipsters, the local grocery store employees after work, locals, friends of the owner/manager - and more. I used to be a huge fan of Caracas in the E. Village - the original before it burned down. After some time though, the arepas started to taste dry - like the sauces and ingredients did not mesh well. Then one day I asked both my Venezuelan friend and Venezuelan colleague at work re. their favorite Areperas. Neither of them loved Caracas. One of them mentioned Guacuco in Bushwick. He said it was the only place his parents would eat at when in town. I have wanted to go there for years after hearing him and others rave about it. So, Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to me, because Guacuco just opened a new location around the corner from my building. We went tonight and I just need to do the online equivalent of stopping traffic, putting my arm out and making sure you HEAR what I'm saying.. THE PABELLON AREPA was so everything. just everything. Not too salty, moist, the sauces just hummed a melody. It was SPICY and juicy and tasty and I just wanted more. Along with the amazing aroma of the food, we all noticed the ambiance. Where do I begin... My Husband and I came in for dinner we were not greeted upon arrival. Employees hanging around the bar socializing in a bunch and not tending to the customers. We were never offered water while we waited. The waiter gave us our check and never said thank you or interacted with us in any type of way. All of the employees that work here are very rude with no personality. If you do not like interacting with people and being friendly then maybe you guys should choose another job. I went today because I live close by and love to support local businesses. I had a wide open window for lunch, which eventually became tight because my kingfish took an inexplicably long time. Can't say it was worth the unusually long wait, although it wasn't bad. That said, the plantains were the beat I've ever had in all my plantain-eating life (and that's all my life) :-). Now the service: I can't say the service was unfriendly, but it certainly wasn't friendly either and it was inexplicably slow. As for the rice, it was very dry and plain and lonely. It was practically begging for some beans. I used a ton of the delicious green sauce on the table to make the best of the dry rice and fish. Today was my third time eating Guacuco's food and first time actually eating in the restaurant. They're my neighbors, so I will definitely go back to support them. Next time I'll probably get the empanadas. Oh, one more thing: the smell and fumes from the burning flour in the oil was almost unbearable where I sat at the table closest to the window overlooking the street. Maybe opening a door at the back could create a draft to clear the air. read more
