I have found myself within Kalina on several occasions while meandering along to the rumble of the J and very rarely The Elusive Z. Behind the counter there is a welcoming selection of foods and treats of all shapes and sizes for people of all shapes and sizes: chickens, piglets, plantains, rices, coffee, soups, chicharrones, sweets, etc. The pernil and mangú make a heavy and nutritiously unbalanced meal that is delicious and slides down the gullet like a well-lubricated endoscope. I would highly recommend this combination. The mondongo is also very tasty, and its tripe is not overly chewy. In my several experiences, the amount of food in one plate is in fact enough for two meals. You shall find the prices to be quiet reasonable. Think around $10 for a a meal of great heft in the 2026th year of our Lord. The space is pleasant, with many tables for dining and socialization. "Huge ass portions" This is a lunch review. Great spot if you are in STARVATION mood and you want to eat like an animal. I got a lunch special salmon with rice and beans. I really was surprised that the salmon was pretty fresh and adequate seasons. It was so large that I could not eat all of the food. Even the waitress asked if I liked it, which I thought was cute. The place is a little loud, meaning that everyone speaks VERY loudly. But, the food more than makes up for it. Just note, that many selections (especially the salmon) may not be available all of the time but they have many other options. I would recommend the stewed chicken or the oxtail soup. read more

Came here the other day for lunch. As soon as we walked in an elderly Spanish woman made us our plates of pork, beans and rice and brought it to a table for a us to sit down which really made us feel welcome. The food was warm and well seasoned while the portion was pretty large. The whole thing came out to $7. I would definitely come back again to try what else they have. read more

We ordered stewed codfish/bacalao was Seasoned well, onions, peppers etc. More rice than fish...the sweet plantains were good and sticky...yummy. we also had the stewed chicken also seasoned well. Highly disppointed in the lack of upkeep with this place, it used to be nice inviting place to come sit and eat. I went at 7:30pm to sit and eat dinner in the back area with my son and husband and to my surprise all the tables with paper on them as table cloths were dirty. The roll of paper to replace them was there but they sat us down and didn't bother to change it... Food was good as always thank God, thats why I gave the 2 stars.. the food. I also ordered a Margarita which was not good at all but that wasn't what bothered me. The drink menu clearly says $9. I was charged 10. She said "Oh its not the same price as the menu". To which I replied,"Thats now how it works, you have to show that on the menu" so she told me to minus the dollar... This wouldn't be a big deal IF it wasnt the first time they did this. This place has a bad habit of changing prices at whim. On a separate occasion when ordering take out I have heard the woman server ask the owner(I assume) "How much do I charge her?" In Spanish. I hate inconsistency with prices and I had high hopes for this business but today reminded me why I haven't gone in a while. Back seating area needs to be CLEAN and inviting. I've been living in the area for almost four years and I've just discovered this place two months ago by chance. Kalina is an excellent Latin American joint that fills your belly with savory food. I ordered a small platter of their marinated chicken and yellow rice. I never knew something so simple as chicken and rice would make me come back for more. Perhaps it's the seasoning? The tenderness of the meat? The accommodating staff? Maybe it's all of the above! And the small platter is a good enough portion if you're hangry, in my opinion. Had a party catered my Kalina. This was a party for 200 ppl. The food and delivery did not disappoint. Everything was fresh and well seasoned. Food was not salty or soggy. I would definitely recommend them for large parties as well. The food was also warm so we didn't have to heat it as much. I'm officially in love with this restaurant. I moved to Brooklyn from Colorado about a year ago and never tried this place because I'm not familiar with Spanish cuisine and the hot plate setup kind of turned me off. Boy was I wrong. I had the stewed chicken and veggies on top of rice and beans and it was so delicious. I was hesitant about the bone in meat, again, I'm not familiar with Spanish cuisine at all, but it was so so so delicious and moist and flavorful and worth the extra work of pulling it off the bone. The best pernil (roast pork) in the world is served at this restaurant. I thought one of my relatives from DR had prepared the rice and beans - very good!. The sancocho is authentic and very flavorful. I was waited on quickly and treated very well. The place was pleasantly clean and clearly deserves the A rating it has received.
