Just left this wonderful place with my husband and our friend who recommended it, and I'm SO FULL, so IMPRESSED with the customer service and the food was delicious. If you want true, authentic Mexican cuisine, THIS is the place. You can definitely tell it's a local favorite because I watched 6 different groups of people come inside to dine throughout the 3 hours we were there and the customers were welcomed with big smiles and hugs from multiple people of the staff members there. Went to Guads during Portsmouth Restaurant Week that's going on this week. From a handful of restaurants that offer prix fixe lunch, I suggested to my friend to go to Guads since they seem to offer more food for the $$. I ordered the house salad which had mango dressing and steak fajitas. The salad was fresh (no wilted veggies here). Steak fajitas came with 2 small tortillas and side of rice, beans and usual fixings. The steak eas marinated well though a tad too oily! Service was good: someone opened the door as we entered, and when we left. My glass of water was refilled without me prompting. The only thing odd was that when the waitress came out with my and my friend's salads in her hands, she stopped by the bar to chit chat with someone for a good 5 minutes while we were a few feet away in our booth waiting. Found Guads through Portsmouth restaurant week. Decided to try it with my fellow Yelp friend. Located in a nice spot in Portsmouth. Parking around Guads was ample. Place was okay, our menu had all the sauces on it, lol. It was a well loved menu. Tried the house salad , it was okay. My steak quesadilla was delicious, I'd try it again. Fixins like sour cream, lettuce, etc that came with it were big servings which was nice. Our two servers were lacking customer service. One of them seemed out of it. Hope he's okay. Came here after a concert at the Portsmouth Pavilion. I didn't have too many expectations. The staff was friendly and was patient as we made our order. We ordered 2 shrimp tacos and 1 fish taco and an order of taquitos. I got a Passionfruit drink on the special's menu as well. The drink was heavy on the syrup and tasted flat even though it was supposed to have ginger ale in it. The chips and salsa were just OK, nothing special at all and I really didn't care to eat much of it. The shrimp tacos were aright I'd give them about a 7/10. The fish taco, however, was horrible. The fish was paper thin, mainly skin and it was ripped open. The fish tasted like a fish stick instead of the type of typical fried fish taco you would normally get at a restaurant. The taquitos were greasy but still good. Overall, I don't see myself coming back here by choice. read more

Food & Customer Service was ABSOLUTELY Disgusting!!! Ordered a Carnitas Platter & Guacamole Dip, the food was unseasoned; greasy and did not taste like Mexican food. I started eating the Carnitas and the rice/refried beans made me nauseous The Guacamole was brown & tasted nasty, I only ate 1 small piece of chip with some & immediately stopped. I went to the restaurant after work to return the food and the customer service was deplorable and the staff to include the manager was rude and disgusting!!! I just had a fantastic meal! I was having a hard time deciding what I wanted to order, and noticed that the Wednesday special is Carnitas for only $10.99! It's a huge plate and some of the best Carnitas I've had anywhere in a very long time. I also ordered a small queso which was delicious as well. Tonight, Jan 10, 2024 arrived with a girlfriend (from out of town) to enjoy Mexican. while finishing up and relaxing at our table "catching up" a manager comes to our table asking if were finished and that he had a 5 top table who is waiting. So how rude and disrespectful to basically be thrown out of the restaurant after tipping 25% and spending a good amount of money. Selfish, greed and flat out disrespect! I will NOT return and I will let everyone know about this! There are polite ways to ask people to leave along with offering a coupon or another table with complimentary appetizer. We were going to a concert at the pavilion a few blocks away so we stumbled onto this place and it was AMAZING! We were seated immediately and the waiter was super friendly! The menu is incredible lots of traditional dishes and lots of high end dishes you won't find everywhere else. The carnitas was falling apart it was so tender! Always great customer service from the moment you step in till you leave. The food is great especially for the prices. Have tried 70% of the menu hasn't missed yet, especially those yummy tacos, fajitas and that fresh guacamole (my go to's). Drinks are always good and cheap, and the atmosphere is perfect. Cannot say enough how amazing this restaurant is. Not only is the food yummy (the tacos are a must try!), but the customer service is a ton of steps above the rest. My son is so welcomed there- the restaurant is the most family friendly one I've ever been to. The servers act like they've known you for years! We love coming here because it's one of the few places that my toddler actually sits and eats and actually enjoys it- their mac and cheese is his absolute favorite. Came in here in Sunday evening with my littlest minion for a Dad and daughter date. Mexican food is on our top 3 list of favorites and Guad's did not disappoint! We've actually walked and driven by this spot several times before and never stopping in. It's alone along a strip across from the library. Outside seating when the weather is nice. Some booths along the wall, tables in the middle and a big bar top. Kind of divey feel and I like it! The food- Chips and salsa- chips were warm and fresh. Salsa came out in a big bowl for dipping. A little kick to it but I like that! Queso was delicious as well! Soft taco kids meal- came with rice and beans. Soft taco wasn't puny either! I tried some of each and delicious! Pazole- ok so I love this stuff! I probably misspelled it and definitely mispronounce it every time I order BUT this was a MEAL! Usually there's a couple little chunks of pork. This one had a TON! I'd come back just for another bowl. I'm actually drooling right now typing this. Fried ice cream- HUGE scoop with whipped cream chocolate sauce and a cherry on top. Inside a crispy slightly sweet taco shell bowl. We destroyed the entire thing and just about licked the plate! We'll be bringing the entire family back soon! Got a free shot of tequila when we paid the bill. Does this mean I can order another pay for it and get a second free? The tres guads gaucamole was good, nice to see a different rendition of guacamole as most Mexican places tend to do the same thing. Our party of 5 enjoyed everything we got but the star of the show was certainly the Molecajete Guads! Highly recommend this, it is easily a sharable meal if you get an appetizer as well. Mexican, American, local, across the 757, in other states. EVERY restaurant. Except Guad's in Old Towne. Mine barely had pieces of fish in them. Which is ridiculous. One basically just had breaded pieces sprinkled in, no fish. If I weren't in a hurry I would have gone back to make my grievances known. Because I was beyond livid! Ordered food for the family for delivery, which I included a 15% tip to the driver, but it was sent as a pickup order. Food was ready at 5:50 and I ended up calling to make sure it was delivered and was told that they were waiting for a driver. It was close by so we went to pick it up rather then getting cold food. Once we got home, we opened the order up and found we were shorted one meal. We called and someone told us it would be dropped off in a few minutes. They dropped off the missing order as told. All in all, this was the first time ordering from here and the food overall was quite good except for having to reheat it all as it was cold. Great Mexican in the heart of Portsmouth? You bet! Check out Guads. I used to go to Guadalajara's at Hilltop for many years and stopped when it got too crowded and service went downhill. The Portsmouth location takes me back to that neighborhood place. The seating outside is great with plenty of room and distance between tables. Umbrellas, soft music and the old town Portsmouth vibe is a treat! Service is stellar and food is really great. My husband loves the tacos al pastor and for me, the sopes with extra shredded beef is pure comfort. One fills, two is almost over the top and three sopes you might as well curl up right there and sleep off the dinner coma. The trio quacamole appetizer is refreshing and really fun to share. I gave Guad's four stars but wish I could give them a 4.5 because it is a really great place. The only thing that keeps me from giving five stars is the inconsistent margaritas. Sometimes they are spot on and then other times they are way too bitter. But all in, the beer is always cold, staff are friendly and COVID conscious, the place is clean and the food --well, it's muy bueno! read more

Came here for the 1st time today for lunch. We actually planned to go somewhere else but parking in Olde Town is hard to find & we found a spot right in front of here. I'm usually not a Mexican fan, but the food here was pretty good. We got tuna bites for an appetizer which was awesome they had these at a Mexican spot. I got nachos and my husband got fajitas. The food was awesome! The service was pretty good and I love the atmosphere. They have good lunch specials and beer specials ;) The only downside is that the food is a little pricier than other Mexican restaurants. This place is okay if you're in the mood for Mexican. There's a better one around the corner on dinwiddie, in my opinion. The ambiance is nicer here, I think, as it's a colonial type building, but the food and drinks are mediocre. I've been a few times out of desperation for Mexican in old town, but again I would recommend going to dinwiddie around the corner. I got the veggie fajitas, and the skillet was seasoned kind of gross. Fajitas normally taste the same wherever you go, but this time around, they were not good.
