Having grown up within a Mexican heritage household- between my family's home cooking & access to real authentic eats when visiting New Mexico-I am a tough critic for anything "East Coast Mexican". My father was the one to convince me to try out the restaurant, saying he was pleasantly impressed with the tamales. The family running this restaurant were polite; it was helpful my father was able to translate our questions/order in Spanish, specifically because I tried to order ala carte (it was crazy out of the 15 various combination options not one option offered a enchilada, tamale, & chilie relleno together, but luckily they kindly let me just select three things I wanted instead of selecting a specific combination number) The table chips and salsa were delicious- freshly fried tortilla chips. The entrée dish portions were average- a tamale & enchilada can only really be as big as an average tortilla- though they were amply stuffed with meat, smothered in cheese, and drenched in quality red chili- but the refried beans were subpar- underflavored, and the rice was al dente and under seasoned. The chili relleno was a melted thin creamy cheese sauce versus the typical melted thick cheese. The tamale was impressive-thick, dense, stuffed with shredded pork. The enchilada shredded beef was dry. Dining here was a nice reminiscent nod to dining in New Mexico because they did have authentic eats; such as potatoes in the tacos, tostada & sopapillas were actually real Mexican tostadas & sopapillas, but overall the food could use a pop of seasoning & could have been plated a bit earlier to avoid drying out. I'm picky with my Mexican restaurants, and this one is so good! We went here because I was craving a margarita, and this was literally a diamond in the rough. It was empty, and it smelled kind of funny (as many old town restaurants do), but the drinks and food was phenomenal! This will be our New Mexican spot in this area. I can't wait to bring more people here. I got a mango margarita and my significant other got a mojito (that came in the cutest boot cup!). My margarita was $10.75 for 28 oz. Needless to say, I left feeling really good about life. For food, I got the veggie quesadilla, but with only peppers, tomatoes, cheese, and onions, and my SO got enchiladas rancheros, which were so good! They were cheese enchiladas with grilled pork bits on top. When I said they were delicious, I am telling you no lie. I don't really eat meat, but I was picking at his meal! Was at a festival with my friend and we wanted somewhere cool to sit down and eat. Great choice! I've eaten at many Mexican restaurants in the Hampton Roads area and this one I would rate close to the top of possible favorites. The margaritas are very good! The chips and salsa, and white sauce also good! I had a burrito loco and it was delicious. My friend also enjoyed the taco. A quick word about the staff, I think the gentleman who served us may have been the owner. He was so very nice, as we sat for a few hours chatting, never felt rushed and he frequently checked on us. If you can get past the old cigarette smoke smell this is a nice spot for a casual lunch or dinner. I ordered the seafood chimichangas with rice and beans and was pretty pleased. The quality of their food really holds up when compared to some of the other Mexican restaurants I've experienced in Hampton Roads. My favorite thing about my experience here was my jumbo "kiki" margarita/sangria; with a name like that it's like it was made for me. The bartender mixed it up strong, because by the time I got to the bottom I forgot all about that faint cigarette smoke smell and was txting my ex. Awesome place vs the others in the area in reference to the quality of food! The pork carnitas was plenty as I will eat off the one dish for two more meals! The pork is tasty as they fry it so the meat has crispy edges. They were very attentive to my needs. The gentleman even offers some types of house made salsa other than the red salsa( which their red sauce was good!) Music played over the speakers so it had a festive ambiance. Cancun Fiesta is absolutely beautiful inside, fabulous bar, and the food is authentic. A sweet little elderly woman (speaks very little English) seats you. This place needs to be told more garnish eg. beans and rice. I felt the plates weren't overflowing with extras, but they'll get there. So, after over 2 years of going to this place since my last visit, I can now truly say I absolutely LOVE this place. The amazing server I mentioned in my first review is Jorge, a man who I believe has some stake in the business. He is there EVERY DAY ALL DAY. You can tell he is the most dedicated and passionate man. Over the years my boyfriend and I have gotten to know him and eat the amazing food. After all the Mexican places we keep trying in the area, we always compare it to Cancun Fiesta and we always come back to Cancun Fiesta. The food is freshly made every day and you can tell. I am a creature of habit. Sometimes I make some switch ups but overall, I order the carnitas tacos. Slow roasted, tender, super good pork tacos. One of the best Mexican restaurant I've been too. I've been going for over 5 years now. Great food, drinks, and service.

I've never left here unhappy. I eat here with some regularity which is unusual for me because this is a sit-down restaurant, and I normally only frequent taquerias when I want Mexican. This is because the food quality and value found at taquerias is hard to beat by sit-down establishments. However, Cancun Fiesta does a pretty good job. Their Grande Burrito (pictured) is standard but good, and priced very modestly for the portion served. The fish tacos would be respectable even in San Diego where this dish is most popular. They're better here than everywhere else I've tried in HR by a pretty good margin. They're standard, no fancy Asian-fusion sauces or exotic salsas but the fish is good and the execution is very consistent. Drink prices are fair. I recommend their top shelf Margarita. I think it's around $11 but it's a very healthy pour of 1800 tequila. The service is great and probably the reason I come back in so often. They're fast and every staff member is super friendly. They're flexible with their menu options and in my experience are happy to make reasonable substitutions with a smile. If you come in, you can trust you'll be well taken care of. read more

This has been my third visit here. We were looking for a new Mexican spot since moving to Portsmouth and we have enjoyed it every time we have come. Its a really nice spot right off HIgh street. You would have to know its there to see it. It has nice décor inside. There's even a few chairs and tables outside to enjoy on a nice day. Once inside you are always seated right away. It may take a moment to get menus but its only 2 people working the times that I have been. I have never been on the weekend so it has only been pretty empty. Actually last night was the most people I have seen in there at one time. I can say although its only 2 people working they try their best to attend you in a timely manner. Not a very large place maybe about 20 tables and booths but it has high ceilings so it doesn't seem small. There's also a large bar with seating and a variety of liquors. Chips and salsa and white sauce are good. I 've had a variety of dishes including the steak burrito and yesterday the chimichangas. The kids meal was an amazing value. My son had the chicken and cheese quesadilla with rice and beans and he enjoyed it. Its great Mexican and it doesn't make sense to dissect tacos and burritos. Its quality Mexican and it tastes great. I will say that the person who I presume to be the owner seems to really appreciate your business and because of that I will continue to return. read more

Great service and pretty darn good food. Held a going away luncheon with 25 people. We had 2 servers. They might as well have been 10 servers the way they ensured everyone was taken care. No dry drinks, never ending chip baskets and salsa. All the food came at as close to the same time as humanly possible. Really well done. The quality of the food was on par with your standard fare. Several people stated that the food was exceptionally good. I will admit that we were all amazed at just how big the Grande Burrito was. Ginormous!!! Walk in an get a warm greeting by the owner, order a top shelf margritta, and relax... it's all good here. I was greeted at happy hour with a smiling staff, warm chips and awesome red and white dips. After a bit, I got three fish tacos, and used a bit of the red and white dips on them with a squeeze of lime... AWESOME! The margarita was so good, I got a second. Our group preferred booths but they only had one all the way in the back where the kids were playing. After being seated we were given chips, salsa, and a white sauce. The chips, salsa, and white sauce were really good. When it came to our entrees, the food was subpar. I ordered the "Cancun Carne a la Parrilla" , my steak was fatty and my rice was a mushy texture. My rice wasn't seasoned in my opinion but the steak was seasoned fairly well. I My friend ordered the nachos ; just grilled chicken , cheese, and chips. She took 3 bites and said it was awful and that the chicken had an odd texture. My friends boyfriend got the enchiladas and didn't even eat the rest after taking 2 bites. He said it was inedible. This place was horrible! I asked if we could order margaritas to go & the owner advised we could take them if we ordered food. No problem we ordered food. Halfway through waiting for almost an hour-I asked for a Togo cup to which the owner advised that he couldn't provide since he didn't have a permit. This isn't what was said when we say down to eat. Then I asked where my food was he claimed it was being boxed only for the waitress to bring my food out as if we were dining in. This experience as a whole was one from HELL! Came in for dinner on my first night in town. I'd say I was a little worried by the lack of customers but I knew this was a real deal place just by looking at it. The complimentary chips and salsa are good. Perfectly crunchy and salted. The salsa is incredibly fresh. I'll need to steal the recipe somehow. I ordered the enchiladas and a Modelo Especial. Enchi's are one of my favorite dishes and these certainly didn't disappoint. I misread the menu thinking you had a choice of two (typical NJ...) but here, you get all 4. Cancun Fiesta in Olde Towne Portsmouth has become my Mexican restaurant of choice. Reasonably priced. Good food. I can get in and out for lunch for seven or eight bucks if I don't get a soda. Last night was the first time I'd tried dinner. I took my wife, even though she doesn't really favor Mexican food. She ordered an appetizer, something I generally don't do; it was to die for. Okay, death might be over-the-top, but it was more than darn good. She ordered the Portabella Mushroom: "Grilled and served over crabmeat with pico de gallow. Topped with shrimp and special chef sauce." Fantastic. My taco and enchilada combo was good -- as always -- but no where near the exceptional taste experience of the portabella mushroom dish. I told my wife that next time we go I'm going to just order the portabella mushroom and a fruity, frozen drink. Oh, also, they provide unlimited corn chips and two sauces, a white and a red salsa. Always delicious. And, everyone is always greeted as amigo. So, amigo, if you're looking for good Mexican food near Olde Towne Portsmouth, Cancun Fiesta might very well be your place. Just leave some portabella mushroom for me. Update 7/1/2012: I continue to be impressed by the quality and consistency of the food here at Cancun Fiesta. The latest delicacy I've found is their Nacho Supreme. Now this isn't like the nachos you are used to at your favorite sit-down chain Mexican restaurant; no, those are likely piled high with stuff dumped on top. Not here. I came in for lunch and had the chicken taco salad, it was the nastiest taco salad I have ever had! I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in a Hispanic neighborhood, so I know good Mexican food. The tortilla bowl that the chicken came in had water at the bottom of the bowl, so the lettuce and few ingredients that the put on it was swimming in water! I guess they boil the meat, but didn't pour the water off. The chicken had a weird taste also. The guacamole did not taste fresh and they give you like a teaspoon of it. The salsa that comes with the chips also gross! I could only eat a little of the bowl and a few chip, nothing tasted good. That was a waste of lunch break & $10. Won't be back! read more

This is what we found when we dined here as the result of a Yelp search for high rated places near home. Everyone, not just our server but everyone was friendly and interested in if we needed anything. The Chips were as good as any, the white sauce was fine, the Salsa seemed home made and exceptional. We had barely got into the chips when the food arrived. I ordered a combination of two chicken soft tacos and a chicken burrito plus a side order of beans. My wife a deluxe chicken burrito. All the food was hot and very fresh. The chicken was super fresh and great tasting. The beans also tasted like they were home made like I do at home. Together with the margaritas the entire bill was very reasonable and the staff were gracious right up to the time we walked out the door. I have nothing but praises for this restaurant and it's staff. We attend this place at least once a month and everytime we walk in the door, the owner is right there to greet us with a smile and it's not because he knows us but because he treats his guests the way guests should be treated. When you settle in to your table, your drink orders are taken and they bring you an endless bowl of chips and salsa with queso upon request, and so many options to choose from on the menu. I go with something different everytime. Always delicious and it's brought to you relatively quick. These guys aren't playing around in that kitchen. I give this place 5 stars. To me, it's a favorite. It's right in the heart of downtown Portsmouth with many historical buildings surrounding the area. My family and I are regulars here. The staff is very friendly, the food is always tasty and the drinks are good. They also have some unique items on their menu which I cannot always find in other places. My regular is the portabella mushroom with crab appetizer with an order of their fresh guacamole. YUM! Light but filling and so much flavor! My husband regularly eats the ChoriPollo which I sometimes manage to steal a bite of. Very good as well. We have had many other items from the menu and have never been disappointed. Great seating, lighting, and not too noisy. Great place for families with small children as the booths help keep them contained. For Mexican food in Hampton Roads, this is as good as it gets. read more

Good service. Mediocre food. This is not a traditional Mexican restaurant. The food seems precooked with limited seasoning. The salsa is bland. The tortillas are not freshly made. It seems this spot has sold out to American styled tacos. If that's what they were going for then go for it. They hit that on the head. Maybe I'm being too critical and didn't do my research ahead of time. The burrito looked like a taquito. Overall not a good experience. And before anyone says "what do you know about a good taco?" I've lived in San Diego for a bit eating real tacos from a taquearía. Also, living in a Hispanic neighborhood in Maryland I had access to authentic Hispanic cuisine. The food has always been good every time I go to this restaurant. My only complaint is that on two occasions our waitress didn't check on us that often and we needed basic stuff like hot sauce, etc. It took too long for her to come to our table so we just ate our meal without the condiments that we wanted. As soon as I walked in I was greeted with a smile and asked my preferred table. I chose the booth closest to the door. The internal temp of the place was very comfortable, the LED lights around me made it warm but the A/C helped to keep it cool. It was perfect shorts and t-shirt temp. My waiter gave me chips salsa and queso as an appetizer and I gotta say that the salsa was amazing and perfectly prepared with just the right amount of spice as well was the queso. I ordered the chicken and steak fajitas for one which was delivered to me in 6 minuets on a sizzling skillet. This was an amazing meal and will definitely be coming again very soon read more
