He isn't a bad broker or even a bad guy, but he claimed he would get us a great rate as do all of brokers. We were upfront that we were smart shoppers and would look for the best deal in a refinance. He offered 3.75% at a cost of nearly $7,000.00. We decided to go forward with an appraisal and paid the $400 for it. The appraisal came back way below market value. Ali and I both agreed we didn't like it and he said he would order a new one and pay for it (since I paid for the first one). That one did come back just fine. Unfortunately Green Light Loans came back with a 3.25%, we didn't have to pay anything to get that rate. I told this to Ali who exclaimed that he knows this industry inside and out and that we would never close on that rate at that cost. Well we did close on that rate and at no cost (except the usual title fees we've seen on every mortgage/refi). Fastforward a few weeks and Ali calls me and says he needs to invoice me for the 2nd appraisal and some costs around credit checks. I told him it was ok to send an invoice because I wanted to see the detail. He wanted over $500.00. That doesn't sit well with me. If you offer to pay for something because the first appraisal you ordered didn't come back right, then you offered to pay for it. Today Ali is threatening to take me to collections saying that the offer was contingent on closing. Those words were never mentioned. If they were I would have stopped working with him as his rate wasn't good enough and I wouldn't have sunk more time and money into working with him. I asked him to send me the documents i signed noting that I would pay for it I didn't close or send me a recording of my voice agreeing to those terms. He said he "doesn't have them lying around" and that he "wasn't going to play games with me." He also told me I was lucky that he didn't charge me for his time. What mortgage broker charges for their time? Oh right.. None of them. Nice Ali quickly became nasty to deal with. I told him that he can send me to collections if he really wants to but I am not paying over $500 for something I never agreed to pay in the first place. I was going to leave him a good review because except for not being able to offer the best rate, he was otherwise great to deal with. Not anymore. There are no shortage of mortgage brokers out there, and you don't have to settle. After dealing with more than our fair share of incompetent, disingenuous, and arrogant brokers, we were lucky enough to find greenlight loans. They worked super quickly, got us the best rate of anyone we worked with, and were extremely responsive to all of our questions. read more
