i gotta say, walking out of here i felt like apologising to the employees that i had to take up 15 minutes of their time.
this started in Dallas. i bought a pair of Shure SRH440. i wanted to try it in-store but the kid helping me kept dropping hints left and right about how they'd lose money on the cans, have to drop the price and take a loss later. correct me if i'm wrong but i thought Guitar Center was the place to TEST audio equipment before you BUY?! what else are demo units suppose to do?
not wanting to cause a fuss, i just bought the Shures thinking they'd be ok. got home to test them and right away i did not like the sound signature. these are the epitome of a headphone for production purposes; the response was very flat and the bass rolled off pretty early at 100 khz. not bad for critical monitoring but not what i was looking for. i tend to favor something along the lines of the Beyer DT770 with more bass. so guess what? i ended up exchanging it the very next day. could of saved me and Guitar Center the hassle if they would of let me test it in store.
anyhow, i exchanged it (added some cash too) for the Shure SRH750DJ. i liked the way these sound but they were too small on my head (again, testing it in store i could have found that out in 2 seconds!). i was wearing these with the bands stretched out as far as they would go. unfortunately, i had to return to work in Houston. found a GC close to my hotel and i went to exchange them...again...
the GC in Houston proceeds to tell me that i'm not allowed to exchange/return as that is their corporate policy. after explaining to them that i don't see that stated on the back of the receipt, they reluctantly agreed to let me exchange it. calling it an "extreme act of customer service". i switched it for the AudioTechnica ATH-M45 at $99, the clerk decides to add a $20 warranty that i didn't ask for and tells me the rest (~$60) will be added as store credit. he also added there was no way i could get the balance returned back on my credit card either.
i got in my car and popped open the box. guess what? these were obviously a return item. first, none of the original packaging was present. there was only some bubble wrap around the phones and a rubber band keeping it in place. second, none of the original manual/warranty information was present (probably why they added the warranty?). NONE. now i KNOW the FCC requires by law to have such documentation for electronic items. lastly, the box itself was taped a couple times with store bought scotch tape. but wait...returns don't exist right? only under "extreme acts of customer service".
ok GC employees. here's your corporate return policy taken STRAIGHT off your website as of 09 June 2010:

yeah...i see they specifically addressed "internal earphones" and "ear plugs" but nothing for "headphones". my return was done within 2 days of exchange/purchase with ALL original box, packing material, documentation intact unlike the M45 i bought.
i can live with not being able to test headphones, i can deal with some random $20 warranty plan added without my consent... but telling me that your company policy is different than what is written and turning my ~$60 into store credit? that just burns my biscuits. read more
