Love this place! The owner is amazing and is willing to give out free knowledge. The prices are lower then anywhere else I've been and the quality is better. They fixed my 2 guitars and I am completely satisfied.

I never knew about Guitar Merchant. It was one of the places that I passed a number of times and never really took notice of. Last night a friend of mine invited to me a show he was having there and I was very surprised. Yes, they are a guitar shop and it appears that they have several rooms were they give lessons but they also have a very nice small stage set up in the back of the facility. It is a spacious, intimate, yet airy environment. It was not claustrophobic or stuffy at all. Truly, it is a really nice small space where musicians can perform. As a life-long musician I truly appreciate places like this. It is a place where musicians, or, as in the case of my friend, bands can perform and get their chops together in front of a crowd of invited guests. If you are looking for this type of environment I recommend checking this place out.

Cool photo ops all around. They had a trivia game scrolling over the bar which is always fun. Lots of lounge seating great for smaller groups to drink and chat. That being said there were some things I didn't anticipate and wasn't prepared for: -not enough accessible parking very busy for a Friday night. When I arrived at 6:45pm valet parking was already full -no AC in the venue- two ceiling fans. It was unbelievably hot inside. -seating at the tables near the stage requires dinner service and there were 10 adults seated at an 8 ft table. Just impossible. The tables were end to end. No space to move. I was seated between two men and our shoulders were touching and everyone is trying to eat dinner. I was having a panic attack so my friend got us moved. -the meal was ok and so were the drinks. We had to purchase dinner and 2 drink minimum in addition to the price of the concert ticket. I knew this when I made the purchase but had no idea what the food was going to be like. - my meal was blackened Salmon. Which was good but a very small piece of salmon. The garlic mashed potatoes were ok however my veggies weren't steamed they were too hard. The entree was $42. No salad, bread or dessert option. I think this was very pricey for what I received. Despite what bothered me above. I had a great time after we moved our seats away from the stage and got to finish our meal with some elbow room. There isn't a bad seat in the entire venue so I am not sure why they cramped all the tables like they do. The space allows for lots of walking around so you can visit with friends- which I did. The venue is accessibility friendly. The entertainment was amazing and I have to mention all the staff working that night were very accommodating. They checked on me a few times. The staff Zoe, Ryan and Marco were all so very helpful. Including Robin the sound engineer-he was friendly as well. I will return if another act I want to see is playing at The Canyon Club. Now I know what to expect and can plan accordingly.

Before my most recent show, it was a venue I looked forward to visiting. However, it had been a bit of time since I was last at the club and things have changed. Unfortunately, after the show I attended on July 31, I may not be back. Please note that this review is for the venue only, not the show itself. While there is a large parking lot, and parking is free, it was very difficult to find a space. We drove around for about 15 minutes before we were able to see someone leaving a parking space that we could grab. On the day of the concert, the temperature was 100° F outside, or possibly a bit higher. When we arrived at the venue, we found that it does not have refrigerated air conditioning - just some fans. It was uncomfortably hot inside. If I had known this would be the case, I'd have brought a portable personal fan. It's hard to believe that a venue that holds up to 1,200 people does not have legit air conditioning. For those that would like a seat, you have to purchase dinner along with your concert ticket. The dinner selections are very limited and pricey. There is no longer drink service at the tables, so you must head to the bar for drink orders. Since the tables are packed so tightly together, this is not the most convenient situation for patrons. Also, if you use a credit card for your purchases, you will be charged an extra service fee. The bartenders Gus, Zack, and Lindsay were great. They provided friendly service and were a lot of fun. I felt bad that they had to endure the uncomfortable hot working conditions while taking care of everyone. I rarely leave a one-star review. It is really a shame that the club owners don't value their guests and artists to keep the venue comfortable. For the price of tickets, food, and drinks, we really deserve a better experience.

Most people contribute to a pot luck feast that spans the wide world of food, from hot dogs and chili to baked ziti, tacos, meatballs, fried chicken, Chinese food, and on and on -- including some amazing homemade clam chowder from Mike The Mailman. Bartender Natalie did an amazing job of handling the busy crowd with speed and smiles. There were a couple of other staffers on site to watch the game, and they jumped in when she needed a hand with this or that, but for the most part Natalie captained the bar single-handedly for the duration. Kudos to her. It's true, Super Bowl only comes once a year, so other game days don't have the pot luck feast -- Sugar Mill doesn't have a kitchen, though they're happy to have you bring in whatever food you like and eat it there. Food aside, the crowd and the service are always just what you want, making it the perfect place to relax into at game time as Basketball enters the home stretch and baseball steps up to bat.

She came to Improv not too long ago which is a lot closer to where I live and missed her show. What a bummer!:-( Well, last night we made this a reality. She had 2 shows. One was at 7pm, and the other one was at 9pm. Closed on Mondays and they open the bar/club at 6pm. We went to the 9pm show. The drive over there was pretty hectic and far. My friend offered to drive, since she has a newer car.. Well, a friend of mine and I decided to go see her live last night and we are both glad that we did! She was FANTASTIC! Can't comment about the food, because we had both eaten before we went. However, we both got drinks. I got a small Espresso Martini(made to perfection)! She got a beer and we both got 2 bottled waters and Sprite. We were sitting not too far away from the stage and the sound of the microphone and overall the system was great! No complaints. They hold many different events from comedy to concerts. You can even dance. They have a decent dance floor, and the venue itself was fairly large, with bar tables and chairs. It was somewhat crowded, but we were not bothered with that. Customer service hit the mark. Tickets were $41.00 & up. Venue was nice, clean, including restrooms and we parked outside on the street. I believe they also have their own parking. One other thing that I should mention, it gives you that old school vibe that I love. Would highly recommend this venue and I will definitely return if and when anyone that I know and like has a gig. Was our 1st time, and definitely will NOT be the last. I thought the performance we saw was solid and cost a mere 19 dollars. And maybe grab some drinks. Remember the venue is not large so plan to be among the crowd on the floor unless you grab a table along the wall. There are only about 4-5 tables not in VIP area and maybe three in VIP area. "I am interested in how the wild beast lives in the jungle, not in the zoo."…read more -morton feldman when i was a student at calarts one of my favorite things to do was to see as much music, dance, film, and theatre that i could fit into my schedule, in addition to attending weekly art openings. it wasn't hard to do, there was always something (and there still is) going on around the campus or at the REDCAT downtown. i graduated in 2005 and at the time it was apparent that the music school was sorely in need of a dedicated performance space. they had the roy o. disney concert hall (which is tiny) and would occasionally program concerts in the main gallery or the modular theatre, but the availability and capabilities of those spaces was very limited and i'm glad to see that they now have this incredible indoor-outdoor music pavilion. it's a wonderful addition to the calarts campus and a fantastic, versatile performance venue. named in honor of morton feldman, a pioneer avant garde composer who once wrote an essay about about the illusive and expansive nature of creative energy, the wild beast resides in the taper foundation courtyard and it's quite the force to be reckoned with. the thirty two hundred square foot structure has a long rolling wall along the front that can slide aside to transform the space into an open air amphitheatre that seats over seven hundred fifty people or, when all the hatches are closed and the wall rolled shut, it can be configured into an intimate recital hall that seats up to one hundred people in addition to serving as a music classroom/studio. designed by the culver city based architectural firm hodgetts + fung, the wild beast roared into existence in the spring of 2010 and is an acoustical instrument in and of itself. all of the odd shaped curves and walls made from glass and wood coalesce into a beautifully complicated infrastructure that produces superb acoustic clarity. i've had the opportunity to attend several shows here and they've all been wonderful. with programming that stretches the gamut from balinese gamelan performances to orchestral concerts headlined by german krautrock band faust to a long distance elton john performance (this was particularly fascinating, with a grand piano set on stage wired up to mimic a piano that elton john was playing offsite), concerts are free and open to the public. it's the perfect place to take a picnic and enjoy some great music.

Harvelle's is the latter. Tucked close to the beach in Santa Monica, this tiny little place might not look like much at first. The setup is a tightly woven arrangement of vintage chairs and tables, with a long row of couches hugging the wall. But once you're inside, you realize they have their reasons for their layout. If you're lucky enough to grab a front-row seat or one of the coveted bar stools, you'll start to notice the details: metal pipes, and rods that spark the imagination. You're in for a treat! What I really appreciate about Harvelle's is that they don't charge you an arm and a leg for tickets. The artists are humble, talented, and consistently engaging. I've been to burlesque shows where the performers feel like they're just there, going through the motions. But not at Harvelle's. Every time I've gone, the women bring something artful, classy, and unapologetically bold to the stage. It's burlesque, yes, but not cheap in style or spirit. Anytime a friend's visiting from out of town, this is the spot I take them to. It's a must-see in Santa Monica. And honestly, what other place is giving you burlesque seven nights a week?
