TERRIBLE SERVICE. IGNORANT STAFF. My sales was Lynn Van Winkle, who tried to fool me but I didn't want to waste my time anymore so I just left. I bought a garden stool that was on sale and picked it up today. They happen to have a 25% off all sale items. So I asked if she could make a price adjustment. At first she said no because my purchase was made a few days before. Then I asked if I can return it and repurchase it and save $25. She acted like I can't return it but on the receipt it clearly says I can... She then called her manager and he probably helped her made up another excuse saying the stool is no longer on sale and if I return it, it would be the original price then 25% off. GIRL how can it be 25% off if it's no longer a sale item?! PLUS it's on sale still. Don't make yourself sound stupid. read more

San Francisco classic. Lovely place for holiday gifts. What else is there to say????

I used to be intimidated by the sophisticated displays and reserved decorum of Gump's until I realized they're selling the same $30 soap I can get at C.O. Bigelow...the same $19 place mat I can get back in Chicago at Fox & Obel grocery store. OK, I can play the attitude game right along with them--smile, say hello and remember that if I'm nice, usually they are nice in return. Everything you've heard or read about the snootiness is probably true. I find that unless I'm being a pest or making a big deal about a purchase, the salespeople at Gump's are usually very friendly. Rule #1: Do not pick up every single glass item, look at the sticker and make a frowny face. Everything is relatively expensive and overpriced in Gump's. This is not Target. Rule #2: When asked if there's anything they can do for you, smile, say "No thank you. I'm just looking at all your wonderful things." They'll smile back, say to ask them if you need anything, and will leave you alone to continue browsing. Rule #3: Do not go in there with an attitude of, "I am going to be their most demanding customer..." They'll throw you attitude back. Rule #4: Do not ask them, "Where's the stuff on sale." There is no blue-light here to let shoppers know that "stuff" is on sale. It is a very nice place to get simple knick-knacks or extravagant, hard to find estate silver pieces. They have wonderful gift items, many costing less than $100. It's a great place for corporate gifts, decorative home items, marvelous table pieces for that perfect dinner. It's a boutique...and a tiny department store specializing in great customer service and knowing what their clientele wants. They have a great collection of candles, beauty products, toys, seasonal merchandise and jewelry on the first floor; the second floor has housewares and the best estate silver collection west of the Mississippi. I love Gump's. They carry beautiful pieces and love browsing there for gift ideas. Went in last week to buy a gift for a friend's parents who were celebrating a big wedding anniversary. I was looking at some picture frames but couldn't decide. Tina offered to help and I decided to buy soap and lotion instead. Would be lovely in their powder room. She was very helpful and inspiring! I love this store! Expensive yes but they always carry some great decor finds at a reasonable prices too. I literally spent several thousand dollars at this place to decorate our house. Unique selection of decor items, decorative pillows, mirrors and much more. During the holiday season the entire store was full of Xmas tree decorations. Some of the toys were hand made, some mass produced. But the prices were absolutely outrages - anywhere from $60-$200 per a single piece. I was thinking giving 4 stars because of the prices but could not. Really some unique and beautiful stuff I bought at Gumps is in every room in our house. They do change collections on a regular basis which makes it a great spot to go and hunt for a next cool decor piece to make your personal space so much more inviting. read more

My son took my recommendation and purchased a beautiful house-warming gift for a friend's newly built home through Gump's online catalogue. The gift was never delivered and my son never received any further communication. When he contacted them he was told that they oversold the item and it would be back in stock in June. I've always liked Gump's for their Christmas items. I know they're a bit overpriced, but sometimes they have things you just can't find anywhere else. I went in yesterday with my mom - I was just getting off work so I changed my shoes to walk around and had my backpack with my computer and work to take home for the weekend. I was interested in their advent calendar while my mom was looking at the German specialty items as she has some and needed to replace the candles (which are a size not commonly sold in the US). The young man in the white suit asked if we needed help and I said yes, because the German candles did not look like they correctly fit the item. He was immediately frustrated because obviously I wasn't asking about an expensive item. He was curt, rude and unpleasant and even had the audacity to say "you're welcome" as he walked away. He should take a hint, people only say "thank you" when you've genuinely helped them. Not when you half-assed your job. I'd assume someone who works in customer service in a high-end store should have more people manners. Especially in the Bay Area, where you can't easily judge the amount a person makes based on what they wear. I didn't get my advent calendar - as much as I liked it I obviously have to look elsewhere. read more

This place is an extremely over-priced, ridiculously merchandised gift shop, full of rude clerks who will decide how to treat you based on.... How wealthy you appear? Which is probably why it was completely EMPTY. Going in there was a slightly humiliating experience because the staff is so unfriendly, arrogant and stuffy. Awful customer service. I placed a large order of 12 items, of 6 different products, for a wedding registry. All products were listed as in-stock. I paid for overnight-rush handling. After waiting for more than a week, I contacted customer service... I got 'Samantha.' "None of those items are available for another week." Why didn't they tell me this? Why didn't I receive a refund on my S&H? "Your order will ship overnight once the items are back in stock." Great. Also, there's no chance all 6 products are out of stock. How do I know? I called and asked an associate on the floor. Horrible experience. I have no clue how they even try to act like a premium retail provider. If you are selling high-margin merchandise worth thousands of dollars, you should at least TRY. read more

Gump's is a case study in how to not treat your customers. When I first started looking into options for our wedding registry, I was in hot pursuit of finding a good silver place setting, and my mother-in-law suggested we go to Gump's. I was blown away by the gorgeous selection of silver that they had and fell in love with a particular pattern. I patiently waited at the counter for someone to assist us, but to no avail. After 10 minutes of waiting, my mother-in-law went and flagged down an employee to help us, but of course, she didn't work in the silver department. So she went and grabbed another employee, who to this day, is one of the worst people I've ever dealt with in a retail scenario. I'll never forget his surly attitude toward us - he made us feel like we were bothering him and that we were wasting his time. I guess making a hefty commission off silver (and potentially other wedding registry items) wasn't good enough! Ugh! When I asked to look at the pattern that I liked, he groaned and flopped it down on the counter. Whenever I asked a question, he mumbled terse responses. And then the kicker was when I mentioned something about potentially registering at Gump's (I still have no clue why I was even considering it based on this troll's mega-attitude toward us!), he snapped back in a nasty tone, "You need an appointment to start a registry!" Well, la-di-frickin-da! After that experience, I hauled ass to Bloomingdale's where people are actually friendly and don't act like customers are wasting their oh-so-precious time at working retail. read more

Before my last trip here I would have given it 3.5 stars but now? 2. It is a SF institution. A "department" store that is really a giant gift shop. Well, I take that back it has some really nice things upstairs. My beef is that the prices are HIGH but service is LOW. It seems that most staff is really just watching out for shoplifters. I bought a small gift to be shipped from the store to an address in Monterey. For those of you not familiar, that is about 2 hours from SF. It took TWO WEEKS to get there. It wasn't the post office's fault, Gump's did not send it for 1 1/2 weeks. It wasn't a special order, they had plenty of stock, they just didn't ship it. They didn't call me to let me know it was going out late, nothing. Total letdown. read more

Unworthy customer service for anything more involved, in particular their wedding registry service. In the latter's case, the department has strange policies that they do not explain to gift-givers, they cannot maintain a stable inventory even when dealing with pretty "classic" items (really, who has their dish pattern go out of production during a four-month registry period?), record-keeping is crap, they don't follow through on shipping items, and there seems to be a cast of frequently turning over characters. In sum: If you want a nice present and can go to the store and pick it up: SHOP AT GUMP'S. If you want a hassle-free wedding registry experience: DO NOT USE GUMP'S. This review is based solely on my experience there today with a particular salesman, whom I'd failed to get a name. I'd recently bought a candle holder which was on sale and I'd picked up one that was prewrapped for the holidays as the 2 on display had flaws on them. When I got home and unwrapped mine, it was flawed too...apparently they're not very well made... Anyways, I'd gone in to do an exchange and by then I'd already decided that I wanted another one so I'd have a pair. When I got there, there were 3 opened ones on the shelf and the others were wrapped up. So I'd grabbed a box, went to the counter and asked the above salesman for help with the exchange. It was fine. So I told him I wanted another one and asked if we could open another one up so I can inspect it....His response left me speechless for a moment. He'd replied, "I'd rather not (open another wrapped box) because it's most likely someone will come along and would want one as a gift." O-0 Really, Gumps??? read more

I have enjoyed doing this over the many years. If you're visiting downtown San Francisco I couldn't encourage you more to do this for yourself, especially if it's the holidays. Very disappointing after trying to return what I just discovered to be a toxic wedding present. My wife and I were gifted a lead crystal decanter and a couple lead crystal rocks glasses for our wedding. They sat around for a bit and then I decided to fill one with scotch. Turns out, this is a terrific way to give yourself lead poisoning! Google it! BUT... beyond the 90 day return policy so, well, I guess that's what e-bay is for. I would consider this return policy very carefully before registering at Gumps! After your wedding stuff has a tendency to sit around for a while, especially when they are household knick-knack sorts of crap, and customer service is not at all interested in working with you. Even when their products, when used as designed, have been proven to poison you Go with Macys... their return policy is awesome and they also worked with us when a few "delivered" packages never materialized. Oh yeah... while on the phone I made a couple SF references and was informed that the call had been routed to Somewhere in Canada? Seriously... Gumps customer service is in Canada. FAIL read more

I would generally not update a review so quickly, but the last time I was there (to buy only 1 champagne glass), they gave me 2 glasses of champagne, offered macaroons, and I had a great conversation about Thomas Keller's restaurants with one of the employees (whose name escapes me!). I've loved this place ever since I stepped in out of curiosity years ago. And to this day, for that hard to shop for person's birthday, I make the trip into the city to score her something exquisite molded and carved out of their Murano glass or Limoges boxes. I agree with Nish. Most of my fun is spent simply browsing and perusing items not located at typical large scale stores such as Bloomingdale's or Neiman-Marcus. I love the fragrances and spa section of the first floor. I personally buy the Hyacinth Eau de Cologne because I love the light hints of the floral oils and one spray lasts the whole day and into the night. The little bars of soaps ornately gathered into a creme box and tied with a delicate satin burgundy ribbon. Christmas is my favorite time to shop here, as I usually find wonderfully gorgeous fruits blown out of glass and decorated with intricate beads and sparkles. The pear, looked almost good enough to eat. Staff people were incredibly courteous, nice, and helpful. Free wrapping for the holidays and they hold items for you below as you continue to shop around. When I came down to retrieve my items, the saleslady had wrapped everything, even my perfume, in their classic wrapping with the stain bow. I really loathe this place. In particular, I loathe their online customer service. I have never encountered a group of people so profoundly bad at their jobs who obviously make stuff up just to get me off the phone. I purchased a cabinet from their website which arrived damaged (big surprise there since it wasn't protected at all and shipped all the way from China. Hello? A little bubble wrap maybe?). What ensued was me calling every day, another charge to my account, no credit, many many different variations of the problem with every person offering to help but no one actually doing so, and finally...a replacement cabinet that was missing a door. The online customer service is so horrifically bad, it's mind boggling. And the furniture was crap. They get 1 star because the customer service rep at the store (who acts as a liaison with the catalog...isn't it a bad sign that they need this lady at all?) is nice and seems able to get stuff done. There are some stores in the city that I only go to for specific people. Namely, friends who can afford the finer things in life, and I want to get them something nice, but don't have an unlimited bankroll. This is the store that I turn to when I need that perfect something. Yes, things are expensive here, but I've found some great pieces that are affordable and just unique. Lots of Asian influence here, but their artsy pieces are all very unique, tasteful, and just beautiful. There's nothing unique about Gump's. They buy low and sell high-really high. An example is Raynaud china. Gump's sell a five piece place setting of Cornflower for $593. Replacements sells it for $429. Their quality is iffy. Sometimes it is good. Sometimes it is not good. My suggestion is to look on the internet for the same product before purchasing at Gump's. I need to buy gifts sometimes for insufferable snobs. This place is like snob insurance: you can't go wrong here. It's stuff is so nice, that it's turning me into snob. I walk the aisles and say - out loud - "Oh my! I ONLY buy after-shower mint toner made by Florentine Monks!! Whatever would I do if I had to use REGULAR AFTER-SHOWER MINT TONER????!!" Sometimes I hold an imaginary martini or a long-filter cigarette while I'm doing this, and no one seems to mind. Now my gifts totally go over. Before, the snobs appeared burdened by my gifts ("Oh GOODNESS. I have to WALK THIS ALL THE WAY TO THE RUBBISH BIN!!"). Now, they even crack a half-smile: ("hmmmm Oh.... what's this? OH! GUMP'S!! High-end. I get it. $55 for a Xmas ornament that I saw for $8.95 at Cost Plus? ......... I'm way too much of a bargain shopper to come out of this place with a Gump's bag. Gumps is SF's ultimate gift emporium. Whether for yourself or someone else, you can always find something appropriate and, perhaps surprisingly to some, reasonably priced. For example, there are the wonderful clear Kosta Boda tea lights that cascade light across the table depending on the design. Many years ago one of the staff mentioned that he has them all around his house. Well, I started buying them as gifts, and for myself - over 5 years ago they were only $25 each, and 1 alone was a wonderful, classic gift. Now they are $30, and still totally worth it. The bath items and candles are too die for - try the D.L. & Co Candles - Lady Marmalade is one of my favorites, but also Angel's Trumpet and Pink Pepper all have wonderful scents and amazing packaging. The packaging is almost as good as the candle! Gumps always has ready to go gifts already packaged and always a great selection - again with a price range that works for everyone. If you have something extra special that needs incredible gift wrapping - head to the Gump's stationery department - now known as soolip at Gump's. soolip is a letterpress and paperie store in LA and they have installed the most fantastic person - Billy Hutchinson in Gumps. His custom gift wrap is unparalleled in this world. If you have an important gift - trust it to no one else! Of course there are the over the top ceramic flowers that tower at 6' high for the rich and ridiculous, but check out the stationery area and silver-plated items for some really nice things. read more

I purchased towels and a bath mat from the catalog. The shade of green was just right with floral embroidery. The description was exquisite: thick, luxurious, etc. That's what I expected due to the LUXURIOUS price tag. What I received was criminal. Thin, cheap towels resembling discount store merchandise. The bath mat was barely larger than a placemat. I was totally deflated. On a visit to HOMEGOODS I found lovely towels at a fraction of the cost. Gump's description of textiles leaves a lot to be desired. Lesson learned. read more

WATCH OUT!!! We ordered on-line from Gumps using a discount promotion code they sent us in August. The order completed and identified the total was $676.40 including approximately $150 discount. Today I called them because they charged my credit card $798.03. Their customer service rep, after checking with her supervisor offline, came back with an offer of $90 discount total; some $60-odd shy of what their order on-line and email order statements stated was the applied discount. Since that did not satisfy us, Gumps then wanted to 1) charge me shipping for returning their merchandise when they failed to honor their pricing! 2) make me move all the merchandise into one box instead of the 6 it came in! At this point in time, they have authorized FEDEX to pick up all 6 boxes tomorrow. We will have to discover once the merchandise is returned, what Gumps proposes at that time to refund my credit card. UPDATE: Gump's has come back and given us the full discount in lieu of picking up the entire order for return/restock. We received a call from someone higher in the customer care department with apologies, and they issued a credit to the credit card company. That said, we have experienced better. read more

I love Gumps and one of my annual holiday traditions is picking out a Christmas ornament. Granted the prices aren't for the faint of heart, but I think the somewhat recent change in management brings a better variety of price points to consumers. Great source for gifts and wedding registries. Classic San Francisco. If you're trendy and flippant in taste, perhaps this isn't the shop for you. Anyways, walking into Gump's from Maiden Lane should have been in black and white, my little gloved hand held delicately by a dashing Jimmy Stewart, it was so sweet. I can attest with other yelpers, some things are definitely classy and pricey but some are just plain odd. As Yelper Lulu pointed out, that "giant chicken constructed out of porcelain plate fragments" is still available for sale! I'm not sure if I'll really appreciate it sitting in my living room?! I love the jewelry here. Lot's of beautiful stones and creative design pieces. I love the jade and pearls. Some pieces can be very expensive but many are reasonably priced. I also love the crystal selection. I often come here for the extensive Baccarat selection. I love giving Baccarat as gifts. Everything in here is beautiful - if I had lots of money I would fill me house with their furniture, art, and dress myself with their jewelry. Passed through SF on Black Friday, and I had to stop at Gumps! When I lived local, every Christmas I'd buy myself an ornament, and one for my mom in NJ. Since her birthday is coming up, I thought it would be fun to bring back the tradition. Gumps at Christmas is amazing, but for the most part, it is very expensive. There are affordable ornament options, but keep in mind that you are getting unique items. Staff here is very professional, though probably lacking a little in the friendly category. Do NOT order anything online! I returned some bedding (unopened in original packages) 4 weeks ago and have not been refunded my money. I was told there is a third party that does billing, but even so, this seems more like a way to hold onto money which I don't appreciate. I've never felt more sated, but Gumps is not a restaurant. I like to think of it as a museum where you can buy items that catch your fancy. My visual side is overjoyed, although I did walk out empty-handed. My practical side took over and insisted I didn't need dry-clean only placemats that day. Kidding aside, Gumps does have items that are both practical and aesthetically pleasing. For instance, I'm very tempted to buy a duck decanter or modern art serving tray set that caught my eye. I'm also tempted to buy a great looking chest of drawers, although I'll have to make an appointment with my interior decorator to consult with her first. I'm adding Gumps to my must-do San Francisco list for when we have visitors. Despite my rather frumpy appearance the day I visited, several associates came forward to explain the pieces and the background behind them. read more
