Moulthrop - hubby and I are obsessed with this line!

Gump's reputation speaks for itself and even just stopping by as a lookie loo does t disappoint. 1/2 off holiday sale is in full swing but know that they now close on weekdays at 5pm sharp, and no longer open on Sundays. Enjoy your browse!!

If Ward Cleaver made more money doing whatever he did in his business suit every day, I'm sure his wife June could afford more than her one string of pearls and a set of lace handkerchiefs for the Beaver to give to Aunt Martha, that lonely spinster that made the Beav's life hell by buying him a pair of short pants and knee socks to wear to school. Of course this was back in the late 1950's, so the kids all laughed at him, but now, the Beav or rather Theodore would look fly. And maybe that's where Gump's is in my mind. What I viewed before as decidedly old-fashioned and an exclusive place to get something for Aunt Martha if I had a better weekly allowance. After all, it's been around since 1861 (...yes, 1861 when the Civil War was a current event) when Gertrude Gump established a store with his husband and his brothers to sell mirrors and frames. They just became rich from the Gold Rush and figured there would be a market for newly minted millionaires in San Francisco. I frankly think the socioeconomic target customer hasn't changed much over the centuries. It should come as no surprise that much of the store's inventory comes from elite designers like Hermès and Buccellati, and the selection is much broader as they immaculately display jewelry, china, porcelain, silks, exotic rugs (Oriental if you will) and artistically inclined bric-a-brac that even Aunt Martha may think is a bit too ostentatious. Years ago, I received a nice set of martini glasses from a friend who presumably paid a ransom for them, which proved to me that a gift from Gump's can be quite nice. But me buy something here? Yeah right.

Gumps Snow Globe that they wouldn't replace.

Contacted customer service early November 2023 about a defective snow globe that had turned dark and murky. They waited long enough to respond in January 2024 that it was now out of stock. They said that they have no future shipments planned of the item (they have carried the item for over 10 years, so that wasn't believable). We have unsubscribed from emails and do not plan to purchase any further items from Dumps.

After 157 years in downtown San Francisco, the oldest department store in San Francisco has filed for bankruptcy and is closing, as of this Sunday, December 23. So sad, as it was truly an institution in upscale shopping on tony Maiden Lane. In fact, when I was in college, I used to come here and think, "When I get rich one day, I'm going to actually buy stuff from here." The liquidation sale is in process, with jewelry going for 60% off, and other items up to 80% off. Even with the discounts, I personally didn't see anything that interested me. I think the most desirable items were snagged prior to the deep discounts. I asked an employee why the beloved store was closing, and was told, interestingly, that it was due to poor management. Very interesting commentary, coming from an employee. For what it's worth, my personal take on the situation was that Gump's never kept up with the times. Whenever I came throughout the years, it was obvious from the merchandise, that they catered to a significantly older generation. The shoppers and salespeople were predominately grey haired women and men, which is totally fine. However, that certainly limited their client base in the City, which is now dominated by significantly younger techies. I don't know how they compiled their marketing demographics, but I don't think you needed to be a Harvard MBA to figure out it clearly wasn't working for them. I did however, purchase hostess gifts for an older friend, who was always impressed with the Gumps' gift box and wrapping. However, Gump's would never come to mind when I was thinking of getting fun gifts for younger, hip friends. So long, Gumps...

My Favorite place to buy a gift ... and best place to receive a gift from. Unique, classy, natural, innovative but all with an SF flair! Wonderful art and toys too.

Diva ornaments :) They also had other ornaments shaped like tiaras, chanel style bags, and rings in ringboxes for this theme. :)

There's a TON to love about this SF staple!! I don't know about everyone else, but I've been receiving Gump's mail order catalog forever, and it's nice to stop in and see all the unique goodies in person. I popped in a few days ago and noticed the holidays are in full swing inside. Whether you celebrate in a holiday bling way or a little more reserved, you'll find some of the most amazing and unique decor EVER for your space here! (It'll be hard to choose- their decorations are incredible!) They also carry beautifully created holiday cards, many made by local artisans right here in SF, which is cool. If you're in a time crunch and need to send a gift right out, many are already wrapped and ready to go. Just pick them up and send! There's also a ton to browse besides holiday decor. Take time to see the unique art pieces, jewelry, children's toys, and clothes-you'll have plenty to inspire you! Have fun and happy holidays!!! TIP: They do great gift wrapping on the spot, so if you need it, don't forget to ask!

    Busy!

I don't think I would come here for wall art specifically as I didn't find a single piece I liked but there was some really nice furniture, decor and other peices for sure. The staff was also welcoming and greeted us in and they had plenty of staff to help if you needed it. This place is definitely worth a look around!

Based on what my husband and I saw it did look like they worked independently, and it said nothing in the description about that so we trusted what we saw.  I understand it costs money to have someone pick up the chair for a return, however this seems highly unfair when the listing made it seem smoother as well as things working independently when reclining each and they don't - they recline at the same time. This feels like terrible marketing and customer service to not make it right or attempt to. Do not buy this product if you want a smooth recline and are looking for the leg and head recline to be independent of one another. It's not comfortable. The only thing it's got going for it is it's beautiful. I wish I would have never bought this because now my only option is returning with a 50% restocking fee. I purchased this chair with GoFundMe money so this is no small price tag for me and it seems like terrible customer service and marketing to not make this right.

The product that arrived at my house a few weeks later was totally different than what I sat on and ordered. Overinflated cushions that felt like silicone implants/bouncy houses. My couch was supposed to be "angel soft" or some super soft cushion. Nope. And it was 6 inches longer than we wanted. To Richard's credit, he tried to fix it, sent someone out to address the cushions and then picked it up and shortened it (which I paid for even though it arrived longer than I wanted) . And then they cut it too short...end result was worse somehow, a sort of Frankencouch. This was a lost cause from the start. Biggest case of buyer's remorse I've ever had. Wound up buying a SECOND couch at Room and Board, which is what EVERYONE told me to do in the first place. My experience dealing with Carlos was great, and I'll definitely be a repeat customer. I've been following their website for a few months now and they consistently have interesting, affordable mid-century pieces rotating through their inventory. I think they said there are updates on the site every 10 days, but the RSS feed seems to have something new every two or three days. Since there isn't a storefront (it's run from a storage unit in Portrero Hill) this is the best way to check out what they've got on hand. I ended up going to meet Carlos at the storage unit for a pair of lounge chairs and a dresser. Normally I'm extremely hesitant to purchase furniture sight unseen, but everything I saw in person was in such impeccable condition that I regret not putting down a deposit on the dresser - by the time I showed up the next day to check it out, it had already been snagged by some lucky jerk (Carlos had told me that someone had put down a deposit on it earlier, so I knew this was probably not going to work out). Instead I had to "settle" for just the chairs, which look fantastic in my place. He even wrapped everything up in plastic wrap for me since the person who had my Zipcar truck the hour before me had apparently used it to transport their collection of dirt. Just a totally satisfied experience overall.

I will definitely be doing business with MCMF again, I found everyone to be highly professional, friendly, and prompt. Additionally, I have my eye on some other things we saw.
