We chose the Gunn House because we wanted to experience a piece of Gold Rush history during our Yosemite trip. Despite the mixed reviews, we decided to give this historic 1850 inn a chance. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. We stayed in Room 14, which was advertised as having a queen bed, but it was actually a full-size bed. The room itself was very small, and while it contained beautiful antique furnishings, it felt neglected rather than charming. The window air conditioner was outdated and awkwardly installed, the shower barely drained, the toilet paper holder had been poorly glued back onto the wall, and the towel bar repeatedly fell off. The old wall heater also appeared outdated enough to raise safety concerns. Outside, the disappointment continued. The swimming pool was green, the grounds felt unkempt, and the property overall looked dirty and cluttered. Instead of feeling like a treasured historic inn, it felt like a place that has been left to slowly deteriorate. What makes this especially sad is the incredible potential this property still has. After returning to our room, I looked into the history of the Gunn House and found photos and information from the previous owners. It was evident they had intentionally preserved the hotel's historic character and created a warm, inviting atmosphere. Since the ownership changed around 2017, it appears that only the bare minimum has been done to maintain the property. Many of the photos currently used online seem to reflect the inn during its better years rather than its present condition. The Gunn House deserves better. It is a historic treasure with rich Gold Rush heritage, and it should be restored by owners who are passionate about preserving its legacy. With proper investment, thoughtful restoration, and professionals experienced in historic properties, this inn could once again become one of Sonora's crown jewels. Instead, it currently feels like a neglected landmark waiting for someone to bring it back to life. I genuinely hope that happens one day, because beneath the grime and deferred maintenance, you can still see glimpses of the beautiful hotel the Gunn House once was. read more

Pros: the bed was comfortable and the shower was hot enough. Cons: it's a 167 year old building. The oldest in Sonora. With that said the funk didn't out weigh the oldness and worn down condition of the place. Too many steep steps and uneven walking paths. I don't recommend it to anyone with mobility issues. read more

The room was clean and inviting! Entire place is charming and was exactly what we were expecting from a building built in 1850!! Breakfast was delicious! Our room had no towels so we asked for towels (we are former Innkeepers so understand how that can happen when laundry is done in-house). Towels were delivered in 20 minutes. Turns out it didn't matter because the cold on the shower was not working...the cold knob was stripped so only spun. Would we stay again.. yes! Okay when you book this room be honest with yourself! It's a historic building! Key word ""Historic"" it's gonna have some corks it's a really old HISTORIC BUILDING things settle. Let's start with some Pros the room was clean. The water pressure was great. The heater although not something I've seen before worked really good. The breakfast was good the cakes were beyond moist! Cons. It's dated. Carpet is old. Stairs need a good pressure washing as I was scared to slip and fall due to moss and algae. Wish parking lot had a sign that said parking here. As we passed it our first time we arrived. Plug next to bed stopped working randomly. However overall thinking about it! Price wise it's a decent deal the room is convenient a couple places to eat right across the street. I felt safe and felt like my car was safe also. If we return we will most likely stay here. Staying at the Gunn House Hotel was disappointing. Room Condition The room had broken furniture and dirty floors. The bed was uncomfortable, and the headboard wasn't even attached to the frame. Wall decorative sidings were broken near the bed, and there were untidy holes in the walls from wiring. Electrical outlets were another issue: there weren't enough to plug in devices, and the few that were available couldn't hold plugs securely. Breakfast Breakfast was included, but most of the choices were basically inedible. Parking Parking is difficult to get in and out of, since it's located on a very steep hill. Overall Between the poor room condition, the disappointing breakfast, and the frustrating parking situation, I wouldn't recommend this hotel. read more

HEALTH DEPARTMENT CONTACTED I stayed in room 2 at The Gunn Hotel and discovered black mold covering the bottom two feet of the full length of shower curtain, but only after a long shower. I contacted both the hotel and the health department but one got back to me and it wasn't the hotel. read more

Too expensive for quality. Staff rude and creepy. Some will give you a mean look and stare. Unmaintained property. Black mold on bathroom ceiling. Only 1 usable electric outlet in room. Shower doesn't properly drain. Probably clogged somewhere. Breakfast in a cute room but not really edible. They had a bunch of cakes like red velvet and chocolate and a waffle maker. No fruit. They had something that looked like a quiche. But no labels as to what these foods were. Headboard of bed insecure and banged a lot on walls. Bathroom window to outside doesn't lock. Lights for bathroom sink incomplete. 4 spots for 4 light bulbs and someone removed 2 of the 4. Looks cheap. Stayed there a long time ago and it was a lot better. Probably new ownership? When we wanted to check in there was no one at front desk for a good 5 to 10 min. Other people waiting on porch before us. Turns out they were also waiting to check in. No one sits at front desk. Even if you ring bell. No one comes out lol. This occurred when we were returning keys. No one there. Also, room appears to be missing smoke detector. Will not be back read more

Although the building is old it's very well taken care of and you can tell there's history in the building. The owner/caretaker is very helpful and was able to accommodate me when my car broke down. We booked 2 nights, checked out at 10:45 the first morning because of the state of the hotel, the service was horrible,we paid for a queen bed the room is outfitted with a full, the blow dryer did not work, the toilet seat was broken on one side, there was no mini fridge nor microwave, and exposed wires everywhere, after arriving home we found we were double charged, they said it smelt like cigarettes, neither me nor my fiance smoke cigarettes. These kids that run the place are scammers. They advertise it as a quaint and historic establishment but when you get there that is not the case, do not stay here, it should be shut down by health and codes departments. BE AWARE! read more

Checked in. Room smelled heavy of Marijuana. Second room. Was dirty and musky. I had to wait at front desk for over 15 minutes before someone showed up to check us in. Had a lovely overnight stay at the Gunn House! Super cool historic hotel with a lot of history. The people that run the hotel were super friendly and welcoming. My room was super clean and comfortable. And was crazy impressed by the breakfast at they served the next morning! Waffles, frittata, toast coffee, Oj Ect.... The hotel is centrally located and walking distance to all the shops and restaurants. Free parking behind the hotel. They do have a pool. And I really appreciated the outdoor seating options out on the porches. I loved sitting outside in the evening and read my book. Gunn house 3/8/25, rooms #12 and 14. $84 per night, good rate but there are reasons why: 1. Clerk was not in office at check in or check out. Yelled for him, nothing. Had to call hotel phone to get assistance. Ended up leaving keys in a bucket on the counter where other people left theirs. This problem has been ongoing for years. 2. Room signs are deceiving. They lead you one way while the room is another. Very little signage on property. 3. Parking leaves a lot to be desired. Only one ADA space. 4. Lots of stairs, not ADA friendly 5. On check in, the tv remote didn't work so I called the office. 45 minutes later he came to check it and said a repairman would come Monday. Several hours later, we found the correct remote had fallen behind a nightstand by a previous guest leaving the hotel having to use a different one. 6. Toilet low, not ADA, hard to get off of even for someone with no mobility issues. 7. No phone in room. Had to use cell phone to contact them. Hotel phone number is also the (weak) wi-fi password. 8. Clock in the room inoperative. Later found to be unplugged. We just used our phone alarms. 9. Unknown if there are any ADA rooms on the property and most rooms require stairs to access. 10. No signs as to the breakfast area, ice machine or emergency exit. 11. No lighting on walkway along the driveway to parking. 12. Air conditioner on exterior walkway wall about 6-2" high, unlit and painted same color as wall. No lighting or warning. Caught head on it during night hours as it could not be seen in the dark hours. Luckily I didn't get a cut but I did end up with a bruise. 13. Lots of street noise but is to be expected as it's facing a busy street. 14. Room was cool upon arrival and the heater took awhile to warm the room up but eventually did. 15. Continental breakfast left much to be desired. One apple, unappealing mystery runny breakfast casserole (which may have been served since 2017 and like yeast, keeps multiplying), no bagels/donuts/pastries , unknown cakes. Didn't want to risk getting sick so we went to a nearby restaurant for breakfast. Didn't see any coffee or bread for the toaster and the orange juice pitcher was empty. 16. Water in the shower was lukewarm, I didn't need to have the cold water on. Low pressure too. 17. Location is ok, there are Greek and Chinese restaurants with American and Mexican a short walk or drive away and convenience stores close by. Would be a good place to watch the two annual parades from but their rates double during those events and we do not feel the hotel was worth the higher cost. Basically, a "one and done". When you see poor reviews on other travel sites, there is a very valid reason. It seems many of the same problems have been going on since 2017 and management keeps making excuses and passing blame. Bluntly, take your money and stay elsewhere as you won't regret driving right past the Gunn House. I stayed here in 2005 and based reserving a room here on that previous trip and that was an error on my part. The change in ownership seems to be the biggest reason why. The management says that due to its age (150+ years) that problems are to be expected but is customer safety and satisfaction worth making the needed updates and changes? The hotel really needs to be closed, renovated and brought up to code as there are way too many safety issues. The upstairs bannisters are way too low and you risk a fall while climbing the stairs. read more

A great location in Sonora. Right on the outskirts of the main drag. Not as noisy as the hotels in town. A quick walk to shops, bars, food and entertainment! The homemade breakfast included the stay was amazing. The pool open in the summer was well maintained. My 4yr old loved it! The service was also great. read more

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. This is, without a doubt, the worst hotel I have ever stayed at in my entire life. From the moment I arrived, I regretted booking it. The baseboards were filthy and clearly hadn't been cleaned in ages. There was visible dirt and grime on the floor, making it feel like the room hadn't seen a mop or vacuum in weeks. To make matters worse, there was no hot water--none. I couldn't even take a proper shower. The TV didn't work, which was frustrating, but honestly the least of my concerns. The entire property was surrounded by trash--empty bottles, food wrappers, and garbage everywhere. It looked like no one had cleaned the grounds in a long time. I had originally booked this hotel for three nights, but after just one miserable night, we packed up and left. It was that bad. We had to book a room at another hotel at the last minute, which meant paying another full amount out of pocket just to salvage the rest of our trip. When I asked the staff for a refund, explaining the unacceptable conditions, they flat-out refused. No apology, no accountability--just a total lack of professionalism. I cannot stress this enough: do not stay here. It was a complete waste of money and the worst travel experience I've ever had. Spend your money elsewhere--you'll thank yourself. read more

Felt like we were in Hot Tub Time Machine! Run down and out dated hotel. Green slime pool. Noisy! Hair dryer did not work. Lucky we didn't have to use the heater as it was very loud. Very unprofessional, unfriendly and made us feel like we were a burden to them. We're very polite, considerate and friendly people, so when we were not even welcomed or treated respectfully - by no fault of our own and we also noticed multiple gross situations and a dirty room - then yes - absolutely we're going to let people know about our bad experience! First, we walked in excited to return to the Gunn House Hotel we stayed at years before. Unfortunately the Gunn House is under new and horrible management. A younger Indian man came to the front desk and offered no welcome or kind remarks, then this man continued to try and hurry us away without properly giving us a moment to ask questions. So we enter our room and put our belongings away, pull back the covers and sheet of our beds and notice (See pictures) one bed had some me kind of papery material -used kleenex? - inside the sheets and the other bedspread had a BIG stain on it that looked like a urine stain . We called and requested to be brought new sheets for both the beds. In the morning I went to check out and walked up to the front desk looking for the Indian man that poorly assisted us initially, no one at the front desk. I had to ring the bell for service twice. I heard a television in the office backroom playing some show in an Indian Punjabi language, I said "hello is there anyone back there?" About a minute later a older senior Indian with a turban came out of the back room and couldn't speak English, so he got the original bad attitude young man on his cell phone and held it out so I could talk to him (bad broken English). While my wife was waiting in the car for me, she saw another Indian man was getting out of his car and stopped (Didn't care who's looking) blew his nose holding each nostril with his finger - then wiped away the snot, I kid you not when I say, this Indian man then continued to walk to the front desk door and with the same snot hand - grabbed the door knob . I was told I wouldn't be refunded because while I walked outside and waited in my car for a couple of hours (waiting for an electrician) I managed to lose the room key. HORRID EXPERIENCE. ************* Would not stay here if it meant camping in the car in 100 degree weather instead. ************* * We booked a 2 night stay here through Hotels.com, and when we arrived we found it to be an absolutely nightmare - we were gone in less than 15 minutes. * Odd and musty smelling little rabbit warren of a place on the outside, I can't attest to the interior (although I see that many others have commented on how filthy and poorly kept those are), since we never made it in. * I had reached out to the hotel to request a ground floor room and was told there were none available upon arrival, and since there's no elevator, they told us to take the handicap parking space (we are not handicapped, just needed no stairs) even though it's illegal to park in a handicap space without a placard. * Like an idiot, I let the desk clerk convince me that he should charge my card (for two nights) before I even got to check out the accessibility and the room. So we parked and I went to look for the room and when I finally found it, there are at least 2 sets of stairs and this balcony with rocking chairs in front of the room doors, and you have to go up stairs to get into the rooms. *I opened the door and it looked like you could barely walk around the bed, so that was it, I turned around and went back to the front desk and said we were not going to be able to stay there and would like the charge cancelled to the card. * Desk clerk got rather heated with me about how I booked through Expedia and I would need to talk to them about a refund (never mind that I paid on property), and that he wasn't going to issue a refund. * When I said I would call my bank that issued the card about it, he told me to go ahead and do that. My wife and I stayed in room #2 on 7/6/24 and checked out the following morning. - Feces on the side of the toilet (discovered before checking out) - Stains on the bed sheet - Stains and tears on the decorative pillow covers - Stains on the front door curtains - Dirty surfaces on the bed tables - Dirty and dusty remote control - Rust-colored stains on the bathtub - Old, musty odor throughout the room The lobby was closed when we realized the condition, but we tolerated it. They fail to thoroughly sanitize their rooms, a gross oversight of people's health. Also, several perishable foods were in the breakfast room, sitting in 90-degree weather (no ice, no refrigeration). They don't seem to reinvest in their property. I mentioned these problems to the assistant manager upon checking out. He was argumentative and defensive. His only excuse for the unsanitary conditions in room #2 was that Gunn House employees were too busy. I emailed the general manager the following day, describing the issue and attached photos. My wife and I recently stayed at the Gunn House Hotel. I was skeptical because of some mixed reviews. Despite those, we made the decision to stay there and we have no regrets. The hotel is super quaint and our room with a king bed had personality. The guy we checked in with, proudly walked us to our room and showed us where we were to have breakfast, the following day. The room was nice and clean. They took the time for personal touches. The breakfast was good. A few more options to select from would have been nice, but was not necessary. The location of the hotel and ease of parking was great as well. If you are looking for an inexpensive hotel, where the staff are eager to help you have a pleasant stay, then look no further. Probably the dirtiest hotel I've ever stayed at. I knew as soon as I walked the hallways to get to the office that I should have just cancelled and left. The outdoor furniture is dusty and full of cob webs, it clearly hasn't been cleaned or wiped down in years. The room wasn't much better. Visibly stained carpets, a night stand that looked like someone spilled milk on it and never cleaned it. Toilet didn't flush. Our room (#4) is connected to the laundry room, literally I could open a door and walk into the hotels laundry room, no lock!!! I made the mistake of walking from the bed to the bathroom barefoot, the carpet is sticky with filth. Like a layer of grime on top the carpet. This place used to be family owned and operated and they took so much more care and pride into the hotel. I checked out today and couldn't even shower, I will attach photos to show why. If I could give negative reviews I would. This room was dirty, blankets were stained, carpet was stained, wires were coming out of the wall, furniture was outdated, and the door had no way to be locked from the inside. So as a solo female traveler, my safety is a priority. The door opened out into the weird breeze way so in the event something or someone was in front of my door, there was no way I could get out. Creepy, right?! The carpet was stained so bad and so were the bed sheets. I checked out one hour after checking in bc it was just not an acceptable room for 180.00 for two nights. Also, I tried to get at least half of my room refunded and bc I canceled within their 48 hr window, it was a no. They said they would have to talk to their GM. Booking.com called them as well and still a no. Please do not stay here, go somewhere nicer. They did offer to change my room but at this point, I just wanted to get the hell out of there so I said no. read more

Came for my birthday. I loved the funky, historic charm of this landmark hotel! The place could benefit from some constructive maintenance but maybe it's defects are part of its personality. It was a great price for a cozy, adequate room conveniently located to everything. Over the top, vegetarian breakfast spread! Harry, the general manager, is on top of his game. If you don't need a spa-like setting and a giant screen TV and don't have a problem with a few stairs, I highly recommend you give this a try! We will definitely stay here again and again. read more

We love the Gunn House! My first time staying but my husband and his family have stayed several times over the years. Harry the manager made us feel so welcome even after I changed the reservation a couple of times (pro tip - book direct with the hotel). Breakfast was wonderful and the delicious hot coffee hit the spot. We had spacious, clean and quiet Room 17, beds were perfect, (nice and firm), good water pressure in the shower. This place is awesome and I love the porch the pool and the awesome people that run the show here. At the pool there is this sign and I had to take a picture of it to inform all people planning to come here to remember if they have had any diarrhea issues within a "Fortnite" (two weeks) of time to replan their stay for a different time. We have to keep all P and Poo out of the pool. My question is..... than why do they call it a pool if they want to keep the p and poo out? It isn't the Hilton. But if I wanted the Hilton, I would've booked there. :) (ok there's no Hilton around, but you get the idea) First of all, the gentleman that was serving breakfast was amazing! The heater wasn't working and another guest commented how cold she was so he brought a mini heater to place near her. Very polite staff in general! It was a bit odd that we had to call someone's cell phone to get checked in, but no complaints there. Once I called she was prompt in providing assistance. We had a king sized room in the back and it was nice and quiet. From the outside we were a little bit skeptical, but it's fine once we got in. The room was absolutely freezing when we got in, but their heater works wonders so no need to feel like an icicle for long. The bathroom was large! I wish they had a full length mirror though so I didn't have to take pics like a total millennial to see how my outfit looked, haha. There's a stained glass window which was neat. The water pressure was fine...the water smelled old, but that's how all the water smells around here I've noticed from the other hotels we've stayed at. I hear it's old pipes.
