We first met Astrid when we called for avails and found her so welcoming, helpful and charming to suggest the great sites of the area to take in besides Yosemite park -- prior to that conversation the only site on our itinerary. We arrived to Sonora by way of Ebbetts Pass, winding down through crystal alpine lakes, faerytale meadows and boulders and forests that speak in quiet and ancient tongues. The pass opened upon amber grasses contrasted against lovely sagey-colored trees and verdant yet rugged vineyards. It turns out the Victorian-inspired Barretta Gardens is overseen with a care as golden as the hue of sepia-colored days gone past and motherlodes once legendary for their bounty. Yet breakfasts are as simple, elegant and memorable as any contemporary B&B can boast. The proprietors Astrid and Daniel run an inn as refreshing as the Moroccan mint tea set out every afternoon to greet us from a hot day exploring Gold Country. We found Barretta Gardens flexible and welcoming to our two boys as well. Our only suggestion is that if they choose to turn off each room's A/C while guests are away for the day that they would turn it back on in anticipation for their return in the evening. Baretta Gardens B&B is a rare treasure I hope more visitors to the area will mine for years more to come. read more

Had the most amazing stay at Barrett's Gardens. My husband and I booked a 2 night stay and wished we could of stayed longer. The owner a Swedish women made us feel at home. The gourmet breakfast served was the icing on the cake. Joy her assistant was also such a pleasure. The property is tastefully decorated and located in the perfect spot. What can I say? Hmmm. Let's see...pretty straight forward...BEST B&B, EVER!!!! Astrid was more than accommodating and it is well worth it for the stay...really it is more of an experience than a stay....Great location in the center of everything, wonderful food, memorable gardens and even a small cool pool for the hot Sonora summers... Sure there are countless things to tour throughout Tuolumne, but you just might find yourself whiling away the hours sitting on property near the koi pond, reading or just taking it all in. This is our favorite place to stay! We have stayed in other B&Bs in that haven't even compared to the level of service and elegance we encountered at the Barretta Gardens. We stayed in the lavish merlot and loved it. I wanted to hire a personal chef to prepare dinner, Astrid and Danny were very gracious and allowed him full use of their kitchen. The breakfast Astrid and Danny prepared was fantastic, every thing was very fresh some of it was even from their personal organic veggie garden. Even though we stayed in one of the more expensive rooms, it was still much more for the money than we have gotten in other B&Bs else were. This lovely b&b is exactly what you would expect when arriving in the mother lode. Like other guests have mentioned, the grounds are beautiful (even in winter!) and the room we stayed in was impeccably kept. I know we will be back to visit again soon. Highlights: -Breakfast was amazing. Astrid appreciated how I take my tea, (milk and sugar of course!) Speaking of which, tea was delivered to our room by 8am and it was divine! She was so friendly and professional. -Cats roaming the grounds are very sweet and add to the charm. -The inn is within walking distance of downtown Sonora. -Diamondback Grill was a cool place to have dinner and the service was great. Casual but definitely a step up from all the chain establishments. I recommend the Portabello mushroom sandwich with pesto. Mmmm. Memories!!! B&B done right! A truly great experience, we are looking forward to going back. A beautiful house with a lovely garden; a very calm and relaxing atmosphere. Perfect for couples and families. We just stayed at Barretta Gardens last night and couldn't wait to write a review! Danny was absolutely lovely - we couldn't have asked for a better host. Unfortunately Astrid was sick, so we'll have to meet her next time! Our room (the Syrah) was cozy and comfortable and it was such a treat to wake up to coffee and tea in the sitting room just outside our door. Danny had already set up a fruit bowl and refreshments for us when we arrived at breakfast and was so wonderful to chat with as he made the most delicious poached egg plate! Lovely Victorian situated two blocks overlooking Sonora on an acre of lush trees, plants and multi-level terraces and koi pools. Eight Fairly-priced cozy period bedrooms. Clean, quiet. Nice bathrooms. Astrid is a very pleasant and helpful proprietor who serves a special breakfast on the screened porch, just like you had at Gmas! I stayed at the Barretta Gardens Inn recently with my two kids. I have to say I loved everything about this place. The room was amazing, the grounds were beautiful and Danny was a wonderful host. Astrid was out of town so we didn't get to meet her but I am sure she is equally wonderful!! When we arrived there was tea and cookies waiting for us. My wife & I stayed here for a week and absolutely loved Barretta Gardens Inn. Astrid is so warm & friendly, and her husband's fresh ground coffee will knock your socks off (in a good way). My wife's first view of our room was "Wow, this is beautiful!" The gardens, on the side of a steep hill, are spectacular. And Astrid's breakfasts are quite hearty, with potatoes, fruit, eggs, sausage, and more coffee. The Inn is located close to Mono Way, one of the main roads in Sonora, so getting on the highway for day trips is very easy. We both enjoyed our stay immensely. read more

For a weekend getaway from the Bay area, my boyfriend and I stayed in the Tempranillo suite and found it to be very romantic, with the decorations and the whirlpool tub en suite bathroom. The thermostat in the room was stable and kept everything very comfortable, the bed was warm and there was everything from the typical toiletries to soft robes to lounge around in. It was a pleasant surprise to have it so clean compared to other B&Bs I have been to, as both my boyfriend and I are sensitive to dust and animal dander. Checking in was seamless, and we were greeted with some tasty oatmeal raisins cookies and tea. Coffee, cups, cream, and sugar were set on the table outside our room early in the morning, which we took back into the room discretely after we woke up before getting dressed for 9am breakfast in the dining room. Breakfast was balanced and delicious, not your typical continental or rough American style fare. Astrid is a lovely person to speak with, and has a lot of stories to share on really anything you can think of. She is attentive, kind, and accommodating with excellent recommendations on where to eat in the area. She has the living room stocked with brochures and pamphlets on activities in the area as well, should you ever need suggestions on those. My husband and I were so pleased with our 3 night stay at the Barretta Gardens Inn Bed and Breakfast! We stayed in the Merlot Room and could not have been happier! The room is gorgeous! From the marble bathroom with that amazing shower, to the hardwood floors and antique furniture and that claw tub was incredible. The entire grounds are absolutely stunning! The hosts Astrid & Daniel were so welcoming and gracious! They were there for us for everything we needed. We had coffee delivered to our room by 8:00 am and then breakfast was served at 9:00 am each day. Can we talk about breakfast?? Oh my gosh...so delicious! First, fruit salad and fresh mango juice, then the unbelievable french toast, scrambled eggs like no other and delicious sausage! Just returned from a weekend at Barretta Gardens, in Sonora -- what a treat! We loved our accommodations and the owners (Dan and Astrid) were lovely people. My family felt so comfortable at their home! The rooms are tastefully decorated and the grounds are picturesque. Danny has done an amazing job with all of the rock work around their home and Astrid has an incredible green thumb! The two of them have created something so special -- it's absolutely gorgeous. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast with fresh fruit and omelets prepared with veggies grown from their own garden. Astrid suggested Pinecrest Lake for the day, so we packed up the kids and went swimming! What a beautiful day we had! Everything was top-notch with exacting attention to details The setting was beautiful and could be appreciated through numerous windows. This time we were there during the holiday weekend and the innkeepers made it romantic with a real fire in the parlor and a hot tub outside. This is only my second experience with a Bed and Breakfast. And neither one has met my expectaions. The house was nice from the outside with a charming porch, the inside had the usual antique thing going. We arrived and had iced tea, grapes and cookies. This was a nice welcome. We went to the room and I was not impressed, the walls were all painted pink and alot of windows all fully covered in 60's style white lace curtains (too much) but I guess they are hiding the lack of views. We had requested a salsa for breakfast, that was very good and you could tell it was home made and I also liked the fresh fruit cup that was served, other than that, it was not so good. read more

A wonderful hostess runs this B & B - she is knowledgeable and fun to talk to! We enjoyed our lovely breakfast on the porch. I was disappointed though that the amenities advertised on the website were not provided, i.e. there was no early morning coffee/tea service, there was no afternoon snack provided, nor robes, candy, or water in the room. I can understand that she perhaps gets behind on replenishing things from time to time and then is unable to provide it all, but I wonder why we were still charged full price for our room then? Astrid and Daniel, the Innkeepers were so hospitable and went over the top to make you feel comfortable but not over the top. Absolutely loved staying here! Such a beautiful Victorian home with stunning garden areas. What a perfect place for a small intimate wedding! Check in was a breeze, and there was a cozy fire, oatmeal cookies, coffee and tea to greet us. Astrid and Daniel were so helpful in sharing about the best restaurants, cocktails, and sights to see. We stayed in the Barbara room. There was plenty of space to get comfy. And the bed!! It was so comfortable! We had two wonderful nights sleep. Everything was lightly, but perfectly, seasoned. I've stayed at many B&B's and Baretta Gardens Inn served some of the best breakfast of them all. I stayed here the night before and the night of my wedding. The room was gorgeous, the bed was super comfortable, and the rainfall shower and deep soaking bathtub were amazing. Astrid and Daniel were welcoming and breakfast was wonderful. The morning before my wedding I was able to have breakfast with my parents and maid of honor (for a small fee, as they had not stayed there) out on the beautiful screened in patio- watching the birds sing and the resident kitty slink around. The morning after my wedding, Astrid brought a wonderful breakfast to the room so my new husband and I could have a nice private breakfast. We stayed here one night on a tour through Gold Country. We checked in about 430, there is no front desk area so we had to peek around the corner to find the young gal that checked us in. She was pleasant, showed us our room (the Zin-private bath down the hall). She asked about tea and coffee for the morning, and informed us we could opt for 8am beverages upstairs and downstairs breakfast was at 9am. The room was comfortable, and the bathroom nice. We had the whole upstairs to ourselves. The AC worked good (room controlled) considering it was 100 outside. There was ice tea for the evening with nuts and chocolates. THe next day we met the owner, Astrid, who cooks breakfast. Breakfast was simple but very tasty, eggs, sausage, fruit, potatoes. We did find out that morning that we could have requested an earlier breakfast time if we had needed but we enjoyed our tea and coffee upstairs at 8am. read more

This is one of my favorite B&B's. The location is ideal and you can walk into downtown Sonora which has great restaurants, shops and neighborhoods. In addition, it is very close to a number of outdoor recreation areas. My husband and I stayed at the Inn for two different nights - once before going backpacking in nearby Emmigrant Wilderness and once on the way out. We had two different rooms - one standard room with a private bath and the second time a suite - both were perfect for what we were looking for. Barretta Gardens Inn is a wonderful place to stay either as a family or for a romantic get away. Astrid and Daniel are gracious and make you feel comfortable the moment you arrive. Astrid was very helpful with suggesting the right room for my family getaway. During our stay we were caught in the unexpected snow and Astrid called my cell to check where we were and if we needed any help getting back to the Inn. Luckily we had already arrived back to the Inn but were in for the night. Astrid invited us to help ourselves to anything in the kitchen for our dinner since we would not be going back out that night. Grounds were impeccable inside and out. Daniel was working on the backyard to enhance the beautiful grounds, you can tell they truly enjoy being hosts. We stayed in the Sangiovese Suite and it was perfect for us. All of the rooms are maintained well and are very charming. Close to Murphy's and Columbia (Restored old town). If you need suggestions on what to do around town be sure to ask Astrid! read more
