The room was very beautifully furnished, exceptionally clean and the balcony seating was absolutely gorgeous. What a perfect place to spend an afternoon. Was amazing! I stayed here because I loved how the hotel looked and it worked well for my back drop. We stayed in room #2. There were two other guest in room 1, but other than that we had free range of the hotel. It was awesome and creepy. Unfortunately no ghosts were heard or seen. We had booked a room here for last night. I had seen this place on prior trips but it wasn't until now that we decided to go and stay. I really appreciate everything about this hotel, the decor is wonderful. Everything from the lighting to the carpet and wallpaper was fitting for the area and the building. I appreciate old things of history and I was so pleased. Even down to the old school toilet look wow it just made it all so special. I loved the seating on the balcony of our room too. It was clean and I felt right at home. I enjoyed the stories about the hotel too. The staff was very nice and professional. One thing I would recommend though is that they use better water in the coffee maker. The taste of the water is not too good and gives bad flavor to the coffee and tea. Once we used our own water in the coffee machine it was good. So they may want to consider doing that for their guests. But our stay was great and I absolutely recommend this place. read more

On our last visit some 20+ years ago (with 3 small boys) we stayed at the City Hotel and it was a wonderful delight. The boys learned to appreciate the Mother Lode and pretended to be City Slickers. Fond memories that I thought could not be duplicated. To my surprise, the town, the 2 Parlor hotels, the shops, the restaurants, the City folk are just as wonderful as ever! The Fallon Hotel is perfect for a City Slicker experience...thanks to Kathy and the team. Loved staying in a front balcony room both times. Fallon Hotel at the end of town, City Hotel right in the middle. Nice to see that the Dept of California State Parks does such a nice job with our tax dollars. read more

Very clean and nice size rooms. Staff was friendly and I felt safe knowing that you need a pass code to enter. A little noisy from the outside traffic but the location is perfect so it makes up for the noise. Def recommend staying here for a night or two. read more

We finally decided to go back in time and stay at the Fallon Hotel in historical Columbia State Park. You must check in at the main street hotel to get your room and the code to get through the front door. We booked our reservation online and received a two night stay for $193.00. It was worth every penny of it. The Fallon Hotel was built in 1859 for gold miners returning to town. The upscale people stayed in either the Main St. hotel or the Fallon Hotel. There are many different rooms to choose from. Every room uses a community showering room to clean up at night. Some of the rooms do not have bathroom facilities so you will have to put on your nice white robe they provide and walk down the hallway to the toilet. We chose room #8 which came with a full size bed. This was fun in that we have a king bed at home. It also came with a small sitting area with an old white wicker chair to read. There was a small old fashion sink with a toilet in a separate room. It was so cool. You pull down on this chain and the toilet flushes. The room's furniture was all antique. The room itself was approximately 15' X 10' so of course, you have to get very close to your significant other or in this case, my beautiful wife. Our room over looked the courtyard setting which has not been maintained very much but it was cool. They offer a continental breakfast at the Main St hotel from 8:30-9:30 AM. We had the entire hotel to ourselves Sunday night. The sitting room downstairs makes you drift back in time and imagine what life was like in the 1800s. The Fallon Hotel is just a 45 minute drive to Calaveras State Park where you can walk among the giant sequoias. Yes, we even bought a seedling to bring home to plant. :) Murphy's is also a 20 minute drive where there are numerous wineries to visit. Do not miss the classic Murphy's Hotel and their Ruben sandwich. I can say that the hotel combined with the classic antique room made our weekend relaxing and of course, very romantic. You are doing yourself an injustice if you do not stay here at least once! Our next trip, Main St. Hotel! read more

Stayed 2 nights Monday-Tuesday with 2 rooms. Stayed in room 1, 15, and 2. Great staff member, Kathy. There was nothing going on there as far as activity in the ghost area. It was very quiet, we after all were the only one in the hotel for the 2 days...woo hoo. It is nice that the hotel stays locked so people can not wander around in the hotel disturbing your relaxation. The only complaint was the bed in room1 is very firm, so I switched with my son the following night, he had not complained of the firmness. read more

Ok. I get that you have to understand what you're getting with this place. It is not a modern hotel. So for that I will say, it is very beautiful and very clean. The balconies overlooking the street are stunning. I dock one star for a few issues. One, parking is super inconvenient; you have to park in a lot far behind the hotel that is shared with the state park and walk up to the door. Two, there is rarely a clerk at the desk, and their hours aren't posted. Good luck to you if you need assistance during your stay. Three, related, coffee. The brochure says coffee is available on request at the front desk. Well, that only works if someone is there to make the request to, which they aren't at 7 am. Not sure about you, but I want my coffee first thing in the morning. These were all minor issues but do mean my recommendation of this place comes with some disclaimers. read more

We had a nice stay over Thanksgiving weekend. The room was large and nicely decorated in the period. Balcony overlooking the street out front. Our only complaint is it's loud from the street noise. I had one of the worst experiences of my life there. My wife and I booked a room for three nights. We stayed for part of one night and left. My DVD player failed while in the room watching a movie. I had nothing but horrific nightmares that would not stop. It was evil. My wife could not sleep. We left at 3:30am as fast as we could. I left a note and the keys at the front desk. Unfortunately, I left my nice robe. I discovered when we unpacked the next day that our hand mirror had shattered. The hotel has not contacted me regarding any refund and probably will not. I will never go back. Something truly evil resides there. read more

This is our second stay here and it has been a consistently lovely experience. The ghost stories are hilarious, but that aside, it's a beautiful, comfortable, ridiculously affordable hotel, with more amenities than one would expect from a state park. We'll be trying to stay here every time we're in gold country. A quiet retreat with board games available in the parlor to boot! Great game of Battleship, great stay. read more

Loved this hotel!! My sister and I were the only 'living' people staying in the hotel. It has been restored to the way the hotel might have been in the 1880s. Bed was very comfortable, room and bathrooms were very clean. The historic town of Columbia is a state park, and was very interesting. We stopped by the saloon for a cold beer, and the locals were very friendly. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in a historic place. Note: My sister and I were there to also find 'ghost' ~ we are both paranormal investigators ~ so before going to bed for the night, I set out my digital voice recorder. When I woke up a few hours later (we went to bed at 2:30AM, got up at 8:00AM) the recorder was off. I checked to see if anything recorded; 17 minutes into the recording, it is turned off, and then somehow, began to record just before we woke up. You can hear birds in the second part. My digital voice recorder shows the time. Couldn't figure this out. . . . . its a mystery :) read more

My husband and I stayed in the lovely Fallon hotel. We really enjoyed it and the service was excellent. If you're into ghost hunting this is the place! There is a young boy who lives there, his name is Timmy. The hotel staff is well aware of Timmy and actually leaves toys out for him. We stayed in room number six and both my husband and I witness this paranormal event. Our door was latched shut, when it suddenly swung open and a green ball rolled in. We thought it was strange, we went to the door, we looked down the hall but could see nothing. The water in the sink them turned on and the toilet flushed however neither my husband nor I was in the bathroom at the time. Later upon coming back to our room after visiting the town the green ball was in our room and sitting in the middle of our bed. We were never harmed and my husband and I would definitely stay here again, in room six! Thank you Fallon Hotel!!! read more

The Fallon Hotel was excellent. The hotel itself is beautiful with antique Victorian furnishings. I stayed in Room 7, with 2 twin beds. The room made me feel very much at home. The hotel provided very nice toiletries and comfy robes. Dominique, who was running things that night, was so sweet and as helpful as could be. My brother and I were the only ones in the hotel that night. We experienced nothing ghostly or evil. I definitely recommend this hotel especially if you're a history buff and looking to step back in time, or if you simply want to unplug from life for a bit. read more

My 10 year old niece and I were lucky enough to stay at the Fallon Hotel at the last minute due to a cancellation. We stayed in the very beautiful rm. 8 which overlooks the lovely grounds below. There are balconies and lovely lobbies to sit in. The people running/working at the hotels were very helpful, kind, and made sure we had everything we needed. (Thank you Dominique and Kathryn!) The hotel is very clean, and comfortable. Love the in-room bathrobes and convenient showers. You definitely feel as if you have stepped back in time to the 1800's. It was so nice not to have T.V.! The town itself is a BLAST! The City hotel has yummy food, and the theater has the best hot fudge sundaes! Sonora is also close by for vintage shopping. We loved our visit so much we have already planned another trip back! read more

Yes, the hotel is haunted, but the ghosts are mostly harmless. The first night, I got up to use the bathroom, and when I came out, there was a darkness at the foot of the bed that looked like the silhouette of a woman in a 19th century formal gown, but I just ignored it and went back to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the bathroom sink was plugged and there was water in it, which I did not do, and the faucet was not leaking. The next morning, when I was taking a shower, the water temperature kept alternating between hot and cold for no apparent reason, no matter how I adjusted the faucets. And when I signed the guest book just before checking out, water started coming out of the pen instead of ink. The staff was very helpful, and I look forward to staying here again. read more
