Rene is the best! Very friendly and accommodating. The motel is a bunch of cabins. Some solo units; others contain 2 units with one set having a connecting door between 2 units. They also have a 2 room cabin as well. Though the fixtures and some furnishings are outdated, everything works properly with no problems; and this place is very clean, hotel quality. My friend and I had no problems settling into this place. Love to stay here again the next time I'm in the area, and there's still a lot to explore... read more

This is not really a motel but a bunch of cabins. We stayed in cabin #1 which has 2 rooms , a bathroom, a porch, & a private yard. The downfall of #1 is it's closest to the road but it didn't bother me. The owner is very nice & helpful. He set us up with a unique dinner at the plant nursery nearby that was great! The beds are comfy (I'm used to a tempurpedic) & there's a fridge microwave & coffee maker. I'd recommend bringing your own coffee & filters (we bought some in town). All in all the place was very clean & affordable. PS no wifi but good ATT service read more

We had the double. It's two small rooms filled to capacity with mismatched furniture. The relatively busy road was a mere five feet from the cabin and gave its noise to us generously. Some reviews claim that our specific cabin was romantic. My wife and I, staring at the microwave and mini-fridge a few feet from the foot of the bed disagree. I do appreciate the signs of renovations though. It was clear that the owner does care for the property and takes his business seriously. Further, I can calibrate. In a rustic cabin I don't expect perfection. So why the two stars? The high price paid ($170) did not match the value received. Indeed, we later discovered that we could have stayed in old-town Campbell, right off the main street in a rustic hotel for less per night. Shop around. read more

I hate bucking the trend here. On the plus side: I must say that the cabins are super cute, and very clean! The A/C works great. It's conveniently located to Columbia and Sonora. Rene is super cool. Unfortunately, there was a significant problem which was impossible to overlook and difficult to handle. The only cabin that could accommodate us and the kids was cabin number one. It is about ten yards off the road. Both beds were rock hard. It was super loud each time a car drove by. My wife summed it up like this. "It felt like we were sleeping on a rock in the middle of the street." If only the beds were more comfortable we could have dealt with the road noise. The two together added up to two nights of crappy sleep and aching backs. I didn't have the heart to give a two star review. Sorry Rene, I really, really wanted to love this place. read more

My husband and I stumbled into this place after 10pm on a Friday night without a reservation. Rene, the innkeeper, was friendly and welcoming, gave us a great cabin at a great rate and made us feel like long-awaited family, not complete strangers who'd turned up on his porch without a reservation late at night. Our cabin was clean, cute, well appointed, and comfortable. Everything you need for a weekend away or a longer stay - we had a microwave, a fridge, and a coffee maker. The bed was comfortable enough that we slept in until 10am - unheard of! I highly recommend a stay at the Columbia Gem Inn if you are in the area - you won't be disappointed. My parents and I were passing through and had nowhere to stay for the night. We passed this place to give it a try. The front door was locked so we rang the bell. A gentleman opened a side window and asked what we wanted, we told him we needed one night. He unlocked the door and welcomed us in. You can see that he had turned the entryway to his personal home into a front reception counter. His cat greeted us and his little dog yapped as we checked in. I love animals, but for those who don't like pet odor (or is allergic) would have a problem inside here. We were given the last room, lucky us. We had a good time chatting it up with the owner. He gave us some advice on where to eat dinner and what not. He just had one request, if we had a steak to please bring his dog the done. Well we gladly did that, that was one happy dog. The rooms are individual little cabins surrounding the property. There is a nice little porch with metal chairs to sit on. The inside included two beds (in separate rooms) and a Jack and Jill bathroom. The beds were large and very comfortable. The bathroom included towels and some toiletries. In the living room (which is also the front bedroom) was a TV, fridge, microwave, and a coffee maker. The AC unit worked very well. There is plenty of room to park your vehicle right next to the cabin. This place felt like a home away from home, I wish we could've stayed another night or two. The owner was very nice and the place was very cozy and clean. read more

My husband and I used to stay in a cabin here every Christmas when visiting family. The little cabins are so cute. Very well appointed, with quilts and country charm, and amenities like a fridge and coffeepot. Also love the private tiny front porch with flowers and vines. Just a warning: I did lose hot water on two separate occasions here though -- not nice in the dead of winter! They have a big family cabin too with a small yard if you need to bring the kiddies, as well as motel-type rooms. Rene, the proprietor, is friendly and a real kick. Walking distance to Columbia State Park. All in all, a nice little place to stay for the money. read more

My wife and I had a glorious misfortune, we'd read reviews on another hotel in Sonora, and booked a room. When we arrived, there was no-one in the office (9:30PM) to check us in, which seemed like a disaster for the ten or so minutes it took to drive from there to the Columbia Gem, and what a gem it is. Without reservations, we rang the bell with no small trepidation, but the jovial owner seemed delighted to have us show up late, and wasted no time getting us keys to a lovely cabin, with a comfortable bed, plenty of pillows, and charming decor. I've never felt more welcomed to an inn of any level than I did here. We will certainly be returning, every chance we get, and I highly recommend you give this diamond in the not-so-rough a try. My boyfriend and I stayed here during Valentine's weekend. It was the cutiest little place. Everyone was friendly. When we went into town everyone was dressed up and the town was so cute!! We went on a stagecoach ride and had a wonderful dinner. We had a really great time!! I highly recommend that you check this place out. The cabins are so cute!! What a great little spot in Columbia. It was great to have so much privacy in our little cabin. Had the weather been warmer we would've utilized the front porch more. The room was impeccably clean and the linens all looked brand new. You do hear a bit of noise from the road, but it doesn't get too busy. We'd definitely visit again. read more

With all pun intended, this place is gem! It is clean and has very nice little cabins! It is not the Ritz, but if you are up in the hills near Columbia, CA, you aren't looking for super fancy. The cabin we stayed in had a nice queen sized bed, a fridge, microwave, TV and a nice shower with good water pressure. The owner Rene is a great guy and makes you feel right at home! So, if you are looking to avoid the normal, same old thing when looking for a motel, I suggest this place. We will certainly be back!!! read more

What a cute, cozy little cabin to come rest after a day of play in Columbia or Murphys. Room was very clean and beds were comfortable. We stayed with our 3 young kids and dog and our room was perfect. Rene the owner was very friendly and a genuinely nice person. We got room 10 which was a decent size room with 2 queen beds. The beds were nice and everything was clean. There was a TV with cable, A/C, fridge, coffee maker, and microwave. The innkeeper is a very friendly person too and made us feel welcome. Did not have any problem with hot water in the shower. We went there after a day of rafting the stanislaus river. It is a very close drive to Columbia State Historic Park. Also, you can visit a bunch of caverns around that area. read more

Just echoing everyone else's comments - Rene the owner is very friendly and helpful, Louise makes the cabins very welcoming, clean, and all the flowers are a lovely touch. Beds are firm and none of those silly hot duvets that are all the rage at hotels now - the Gem has proper bedspread, blanket, and sheets. Our cabin (#1) had a tub/shower combo - yay! Also a fridge with a quiet compressor, both bedrooms had air conditioners/heaters with a "just fan" setting and nice lighting, and the coffee provided was GREAT. My Verizon smartphone worked great here too. Oh, and ask to meet Rene's dog Paloma - she will love you (well, she loves everyone). :) read more

My boyfriend, his grown sons & I stayed here a few weeks ago. We stayed in the 2 bedroom cabin. Don't judge this by the outside. Quaint, but clean & comfortable. Location is great for the Gold Country. The best part is the wonderful owner, Rene. He is friendly, interesting, knowledgeable. He offered all kinds of suggestions for places for us to visit. my husband and i came up to the gold country to get away from city life...wanted to stay longer but it was only a weekend. so, i knew that the columbia gem is dog friendly and the manager rene' said it could accomedate my wheelchair. i was pleasantly surprised. first, the grounds are neat and tidy with alot of whimsical touches. The room we had was so cute and very homey. also, it was very clean which i liked. the little touches like alot of towels (some motels are very stingy) not the gem. Rene' also had a little set up for coffee which wasnt stingy either. he (rene' suggested a little cafe on s. gold st.,called the gold st. cafe) it was excellent. needless to say we had a very good tme! read more
