And holy moly people drive fast around here, there are children on scooters, others walking but no regard for them day or night. Be cautious if you're out there. Saturday night: the exact same experience plus a loud generator now. I'm giving a second star because if it weren't for the humans around us ruining this experience, our spot C38 was really well shaded and large.

Our friends brought an RV and it was so fun to experience the campground together. It's a big campsite with 4 other loops surrounding the lake PLUS day use passes with no fee available! If you don't have kayaks, paddle boards, canoes, you can rent them by the hour at the Black Bear Shack which also serves up some XL size slushies and yummy ol' fashioned ice cream all the necessities you may want like ice, wood, etc. Although you can't swim in the lake, the fishing is GREAT and so is the size of the lake to let the littles go explore on their own in a kayak! It did rain on us one night but was welcomed coming from Phoenix! Also campfires are allowed so yay for s'mores, story telling and just intentional family time. We will be back for sure. We had the best time!! And yes port-o-potties are the main option but thank God for baby wipes and honestly, amazing hosts who kept it clean and the smell manageable.

Unfortunately, we couldn't have a fire due to fire restrictions. However, we were able to bring our own gas-powered fire pit. I'm glad my husband checked the website a few days prior to our reservation, otherwise we wouldn't have known. It would be nice to get informed by email if you have a reservation about fire restrictions, because if we didn't bring our blackstone to make our food, I would have been very upset. Before arriving, I did some research on the black bear shack that our friends told us about, but sadly found out they are not at this campground anymore. The road coming in is extremely bumpy and rough. When leaving the campground, I recommend going left instead of right. Our cars needed a very good car wash after! The campground is very beautiful. The weather was perfect; in the 50s at night and high 70s in the afternoon. I would definitely camp here again.

Phenomenal fishing for the kids in the lagoons 4. The little cabins are a must for families! Will be on our regular rotation now. Pro tip: if staying in the cabins, there is only one wall outlet inside. Bring an electric water kettle to heat up water for ramen, coffee, cider, oatmeal, and for doing a quick rinse of any cooking pans and utensils. We would died without our hot water kettle. The map they give you at the pay station is worthless, and the maps posted along the trail were also worthless, because they didn't have an "X" to indicate where you were. I ended up getting lost and hiking almost 3 miles farther than I had intended. Yes, that is partly on me for not doing more research before I drove up from Phoenix, but some comments I read online said there is a good loop hike around the lake, and that is definitely not true. Just do an out-and-back hike along the east side of the lake and you will be OK.

Two campground employees noticed our struggle and stopped to help. They had the tools to loosen the lug nuts and then stayed to help us finish changing the tire. So, we made our way back up to the upper lake, where bait is permitted. The upper lake was fairly crowded and a bit noisy (sound really carries there), but it's a beautiful spot overall--small, peaceful, and scenic. We stayed for about two hours, didn't catch anything, but did spot a few fish swimming around. Still a pleasant visit!

I've stayed in Vanderpool, Bluebird, Verner, and Fiesta. They've always had clean, warm beds and clean bathrooms. We have most of our it leadership activities in Tabernacle and A-Frame. We also use the Leisure House and the amphitheater. A few years ago we started using Tab East and Tab West. My primary job is AV. They upgraded their sound system in both Tabernacle and A-frame from last year and it is pretty awesome! They also had one wireless hand held mic and a lavelier mic for me to use. I brought in 6 of our own wireless hand held mics to plug into their system. Their video projector and mixer boards in Tabernacle, Tab West, Tab East and A-frame were wonderful. It's so nice when the tech works!! As always, confidence course (high ropes) are always a big hit for our campers! Challenge course (low ropes) is also a camper favorite. We also do bonfire on our last night of camp and the only down side to that is the 930pm sound ordinance. So over the years we have converted to playing acoustic music. I would give this camp 5 stars, but this past year, the new owners of the camp actually yelled at our RYLA chair in front of everyone, including the campers (who are high school students and are impressionable). It was bad taste, rude, and unnecessary. Also, they stopped providing dietary options for those who are gluten free. They only offer vegetarian as an alternative option. So we had adult volunteers who used their own money to make gluten-free and vegetarian options for our campers.

So while this is an easy hike it can be tricky to find. The roads have been closed for awhile due…read moreto wildfires, it was opened back up at the beginning of November. High clearance vehicle highly recommended - you go 14 miles on a dirt road ( not too bad ) then you make another 6 mile dirt road sketchy for sure ! The last bit of the road you will only be able to go in an off road vehicle. Honestly when you get to the plant there is a dirt road on your right with a closed road gate- this is going to be the easiest route - WARNING - if you want to adventure and find it yourself this is a spoiler alert Walk the road with the gate - stay on the dirt road there is a sign that says hot springs and has an arrow to the left - disregard and keep walking ... pay attention at about a mile for a foot path off to the left there is a rock with a patch of green paint on it ( it isn't super noticeable ) take that path straight toward the river. Once you reach the river you should be able to see a large rock with a big hole in it to your left and if you look carefully to the left you should see a palm tree from the old resort. Cross the river and head downstream for about quarter mile. If you happen to take the dirt road all the way until it dead ends into the river you can still cross here - about thigh deep - the part to crossing here is you have to cross the river twice and go through a grassy watery island then head downstream ... ( you'll see exactly where you should have crossed on your way to the springs. ) haha ... if you decide to take the path near the river - it isn't marked you just have to kinda follow others foot steps - you do have to scale some small rock formations if you find your self stuck in bamboo and find the road to your right you actually where you need to be . I suggest taking a picture of the trail since service is spotty . Definitely a place worth finding - but it is a little tricky - now that we adventures to find it it is easy but finding it the first time not so much - definitely give yourself a day to get there / enjoy and get back - the river was really cold and swift - grab a sturdy stick for balance .. bring water shoes !!! I did it barefoot and it is defining slick ...we got lucky to have only 2 people there when we showed up that left shortly after we got there but I have heard it can be really busy ( and naked )

Clothing is optional, so if you bring children don't expect everyone will cover themselves. 18+ recommended. Hot springs are approx 1 mile upstream from campground. There are 2 different pools , one has a block wall around it. Expect to help clean the pools if there when it's time. I've had great experiences there and very negative experiences there. Honestly though 3 out of 4 times is mainly a bunch of swinging old richards that make it creepy. Respect the nature and pick up your trash either way. It's beautiful there as well.
