Looking for things to do in the great Lake Winnipesaukee/Lake Winnisquam metro area, Gunstock Mountain Resort popped up and I was happy to learn they have things to do all year round. As we were visiting in July, I got tickets to do the mountain coaster and it was great. Getting there was easy and there are large signs along the way to help guide you there easily. Once arrived at the huge parking lot, we locked the car and went to the ticket office where the super friendly young lady checked us in and let us know where to go. The coaster is clearly marked and when we got there, the line was very small. We had a timed ticket so we had unlimited rides for two hours. We rode the coaster a total of three times (took just over 30 minutes total) and that was plenty. It was a lot of fun and it's a thrill going through the trees so quickly...even the ride up is fun and scenic. There are a lot of staff helping on-board and off-board riders and they were all very friendly and helpful. The ride is safe for all ages and we saw little kids riding with their parents, youngsters riding alone (if they met the height requirement) and even grandparents riding it. It was a lot of fun...thrilling but not too scary. Just a reminder...you need to wear closed toe shows. Flip-flops and Crocs won't due it so bring some sneakers. There was a craft show going on while we where there so we walked around and spent some money on local food. That was nice. We also saw people on the zip lines and they all seemed to be having a blast. If we come back, I will definitely sign up for that. This was just a fun time at a nice place with friendly staff. The place feels so laid back (although safety is paramount so I don't want it to seem that wasn't taken seriously). If you come here, I think you'll be like me and leave with two things: 1) a smile on your face; and 2) a desire to come back soon. read more

My first time at Gunstock was yesterday, & it certainly won't be my last! I am so impressed with this place. The staff is great. The tickets are well-priced. Tues-Sat night skiing is $50...(with free rentals for those who need it). We will be going back for the night skiing. There is the Penny chairlift that does not go far up the mtn at all--it takes you a little bit up to try out some green trails. Those slopes are not very wide which is helpful for beginners in my opinion BUT my friends enjoyed it. read more

We came all the way from Hawaii for spring break and my son wanted to ski, this was exactly what we needed! Great for all levels, there's a magic carpet and one lift on the right side for beginners, and a terrain park for snowboarders on the left. There's a free bag check or pay lockers to store stuff. They have a decent store if you forgot to bring stuff. Ski rental is across boot The restaurant inside "Barrel & Bar" was REALLY GOOD, the smash burger with the barrel sauce was amazing and the brussel sprouts with bacon was also perfect. I wish I had their recipe for the barrel sauce because I could drink that stuff. Such a great time in the fall! We have been coming here for the past few years to zip line and it is absolutely amazing, the mountain coaster is thrilling and fun too. Make sure to visit when there is foliage, when you are zipping through the orange trees it is beautiful. The food is also great, I got the pretzel and the chicken quesadilla which were so delicious. I was pleasantly surprised on my first visit to Gunstock. I have skied in New England when I was a kid but more recently, since I live in Houston, Texas, we ski in Colorado and Utah. Gunstock really has their shit together. We pulled in and there were people directing us to the parking lot. I didn't have to find a place myself, or guess where to go. We walked to the ticket line and we got a RFID card. They put in our Lift tickets, ski rentals, and senior discount. (Yikes!) The lifts are all right near the central Lodge. Lift lines were not long. The people helping us with our rental equipment were all super helpful and very efficient. The conditions were great. People in the lift lines were helping organize who goes next, so there was no worry about that. Really nicely groomed trails and nice lodges. Everything is purpose built: one lodge at the top is just for snacks and beer. One lodge at the bottom is just for food. Everything is so well organized. All around staff was very helpful for a first time snowboarder. The only reason it didn't get five stars, it's because this was our first time even seeing snow let alone being in a snowboarding range; and we were so confused as to where to go and what to do. There were a few signs on the buildings, but we were still very unclear as to what we had to do first or where we were even going. It took us a solid 25 minutes to figure out what to do. I haven't come on Yelp in a while but just had to say what a wonderful weekend my friends and I had skiing at gunstock. Runs were gorgeous, rentals were easy and well maintained and everyone was so friendly. I think the piece is also super fair. We even had some friends who are used to skiing the west and I was expecting them to be a bit snooty... they were SO impressed. Gunstock is the closest ski mountain to Boston and there is plenty of inexpensive housing locally. Especially look at the Sleeps over 20 Airbnb in nearby Belmont NH. Lots of hotels also. Gunstock has plenty of parking and the walk is never to far. The food is generally better on the mountain than the nearby restaurants. If possible make reservations in advance. read more

Great, family-oriented skiing with awesome grooming and mostly easy to navigate green to blue trails. The only negative is the slowness of all but the Panorama chair. Food service is generally very good and at reasonable prices for a ski resort. I love the paved parking and the basement of the main lodge for gearing up and storing bags. Our group of four in two separate RVs camped for 10 days during the June '24 Laconia bike week. We found that the campground restrictions were somewhat confusing and overly strict in some cases. While the campground itself is beautiful and well-maintained for the most part, some of the employees seem to be, less receptive for motorcycle visitors. It is now, hands down, one of the best run mountain resorts in the East. 3. Amazing staff. 4. Well taken care of ski runs and excellent grooming Now for the narrative: Gunstock is a Belknap County owned property that provides four-season recreation for its residents and the general public. Several years ago, ultra-libertarians, upset with the concept of a government-run recreation facility, slowly took over its managing board, began dismembering it, and proposed its sale or lease to a private for-profit enterprise. Its management resigned, and it resulted in a state-wide backlash, the replacement of its board, the rehiring of its old staff, and Gunstock survived and came back even better. They deserve the respect and the business of everyone. The resort is nestled on the southwest side of Lake Winnepesaukee and enjoys jaw-dropping views of the lake and the White Mountains. Truly it is one of the most beautiful views in the East. The slopes face the north, receiving less sun and as a result, the snow keeps there longer. From the top, numerous trails of all proficiency levels are reachable. The main four-pack high speed lift, Panorama, has a vertical of 1400 feet, ample enough for a variety of trails. Three more lifts provide access to race trails and terrain park, while two magic carpets and a slower quad provide terrain for beginners. Gunstock's infrastructure is superb. The old historic lodge complex is both charming and efficient. Two sit-down restaurants, one rustic and cozy, the Powder Keg Pub, and one upscale and modern, the Barrel Bar and Grill. The former one is old-time casual, the latter is more upscale. In addition, the Panorama Pub and Deck has liquor, chocolate, coffee, and snacks but no food. Went to the summer adventure park. Highly recommend the mountain coaster so much fun. Chairlift ride was a nice way to explore the mountain. Beautiful view on the lift back. My son like the tree rope course he did 4 out of the 5 courses. He said they were a bit harder than he was expecting. Had nachos where good could have used more cheese, got chicken on them which was good. Potstickers were good. Cherry Valley and Tiger Crush were both very good. All staff was friendly. read more

We were tubing here. We had been in several years. They have shortened the tubing runs. They were still fun though. It was fast. They added carpeting at the end of the run to help which was good. They added a magic carpet. We were a little disappointed there was no fire outside. In the past, they had fires going outside during the cold days. We were able to warm up in between runs in the lodge. We also got an excellent hot chocolate before we left. We had to park further away than normal. But it was a busy ski day. Good for newbies. I am relatively new to snowboarding and found that a section of greens here is very good for learning. I went during midweek when the winter season is over so there would be less people to wipe out or wipe me out. As a newbie, you never want to be a danger to people around you nor yourself. The bunny slopes are not even worth learning here. It is almost flat and it is too short of distance to learn. I'd recommend learning in the greens to the right-most side of the mountain (when looking at the trail map). Rentals + lift tickets are expensive. I spent over $150 for an entire day here (9AM-4PM). End of the season was warm and all the man-made snow was beginning to slush and there are some ice patches. Overall, from a newbie perspective, this is a good spot to learn at end of the season on a weekday. Also expect to fall a lot but it's not that bad at the greens. Coming off the lifts is probably the most challenging for us newbies than snowboarding itself. read more

As an employee the parking attendants here are the worst people I've ever interacted with. There is no need for them when there are painted parking spots, they treat you like children & not paying customers. I'm in disbelief over numerous encounters I've had with them over the years & it only seems to get worse & more aggressive every year. Easy access from Laconia and parking lots directly adjacent to the base lifts. Excellent beginner area with beginner lift and ski carpet. Tubing is available for those that don't ski. Many steeps with mostly blues and blacks. One high speed quad sends skiers directly to the top peak but lines can get long even during reservation only access like this season. Food trucks available in the parking lot along with takeout from the lodge. Can be icy by days end but lots of snowcats and snowmaking equipment give each day a fresh set of corduroy to enjoy. read more

**The following review is based on the Nighttime summer hike** The Gunstock websites advertised an adventurous hike that starts at 7pm that includes smores for $10. WHAT IS GUNCTOCKS IDEA OF ADVENTUROUS? It was more like intermediate to advanced hiking up the mountain in 90 degree heat. But let's back up. The website did not make it clear tickets had to be reserved. We were at the Welcome Center as the website asked early (6:35pm)... luckily! Because an employee noticed us and came up to us. After a small discussion, and telling us it wasn't a good day for a hike (sunny?) and no one was signed up he told us the hike was cancelled. After seeing our disappointment and hearing we drove in form RI he decided he would take us- super nice (he had already turned away another hiker which he retrieved from the parking lot.) As we trekked out we realized WHAT DID WE GET OURSELVES INTO? My boyfriend and I are not avid hikers and aren't in hiking body shape. Our guide was nice enough to stop when we needed to catch our breath because the climb up was challenging to say the least. (footnote; he said we would take it easy today because of the heat.) We were told we were done with the uphill climb and three uphill climbs later my boyfriend couldn't stop himself from calling out the guide on his bull and telling him he appreciates honesty! (I cannot tell you the amount of times this guy lied on the hike- even the other woman who he cancelled on called him out on this as well.) He then proceeded to tell us it was perfect hiking weather? (Are you kidding me?!) Plus how bout not telling your hikers about the bears while on foot near blueberries?! I can tell you this... our $10 did not get us any smores. It was a 2 hr hike not 1.5 as advertised and most importantly the walk down is off a gravel/dirt road which was treacherous. My boyfriends shirt was drenched in sweat! We are now lucky to be alive. I'm going to be honest, I almost gave this place 3 stars because of a little experience that had to do with the Alpine Coaster, which I will explain. Anyhoo, my boyfriend's family and I stopped here on a summer Sunday after we figured it was too windy to go out boating on Lake Winnipesaukee and that enjoying the mountains would be a good alternative. We were planning to go on the Alpine Coaster and then take the lift up the top of the mountain for a nice view. I have never been to New Hampshire and was really excited to experience the mountains in the summer being whatever we ended up doing. We bought tickets for the Alpine Coaster and the Lift at the counter and read the rules before heading out to begin our fun. NOTICE TO SUMMER VISITORS: you cannot wear open toe shoes on the Alpine Coaster. This is not disclosed at the ticket counter. We only found out when we boarded the car and the operator had to tell us to get off. This was after we rented a locker to store our loose belongings. I will say though, that the staff was very cooperative in providing the refund for this. If I had a recommendation for the business, it would be to have the ticket counter ask if closed toe shoes are being worn. Save the drama and frustration please! The lift was great. Amazing views and a nice long ride up to the top of the mountain. You can hang out for a bit and take plenty of pictures. Unfortunately the pub is not open in the summer. I really loved just looking out over the lake and taking in the scenery. Lift cost was $14 which seems reasonable to me. If I knew how to ski, I think this would be a nice place to do so. This mountain experience has been the worst of my life. Being a skier for some 30+ years but this was the first time at Gunstock, Gilford NH. What a negative experience. This all began at the ticket office. Now living in Gilford I was told we get a discount ticket for residence. But how does one prove residence when you first move here? Well, you can't as far as the ticket office is concerned. When I went into the office on Monday, I was able to purchase discount ticket for my granddaughter but not my son because his license in not changed yet his birthday is in April and needs to be renewed. So he has not changed it as of yet. But now when i tried to renew the tickets on Wednesday I was told by Caroline (the acting ticket manager as she said) I need proof for my 13-year-old granddaughter. When I asked her how I would get proof. She was already in the system. She insisted that I needed to have her dad call the office and verify with the school her address. I was outraged so I just told her I will pay full price just let me pay for the tickets, it had been well over 15-20 minutes just waiting for her to come see me and not get this resolved. Now understanding that there is protocol, but this is a bit out of hand. Being a disabled senior and unable to ski this year made this event even more frustrating. To be able to see my son and his daughter to the sport I love so much is a blessing to me, but this event has given me a very negative experience. So if you want to ski and enjoy your vacations and time with your grandchildren go to another mountain. Like maybe Waterville Valley or even Mount Sunapee both here in NH. They are amazing experiences, and you don't have to deal with this bureaucracy. read more

Customer service is abhorrent. It's bad everywhere but Alana at the camp store has reached a new low. Our campsite doesn't have septic. The campground has a place to dump but the requires you to break down everything and drive over to it. Decent campgrounds have a honeypot service so you can dump from your site. My wife inquired about this at the store and found they were clueless. When she suggested this may be a good thing to have, Alana came storming out of her office to argue. It was awful. I doubt anyone at Gunstock will even care how rude and combative this employee was. My wife even called to apologize for her part in all of this but Alana was on another call. She never heard back. Apparently, Alana is just right and that is all there is to it. I'm floored. read more

We had made reservations to stay at the campground associated with the ski mountain. We had never stayed there before and was bringing a 30 foot travel trailer. Our reservations were for Saturday and Sunday night with plans to go to a concert at the Pavilion. On Thursday we received a message directly from campground the that reservations would be cancelled and the "facility" would be closed. I attempted to call the campground three times with no answer. The fourth time I left a message requesting somebody call me. In the meantime, we were lucky and found another campground that would take us for the weekend. This was after calling six other campgrounds. Only after sending an email did I get a response and they rebated some of our deposit - not sure why only some. After they responded to the email I received a call -- too little too late. Later discovered the campground was open and the "facility" meant recreational rides on the same site. So, why wouldn't they clarify that in the email and have staff available to take calls after sending a message out that states "gee sorry" go somewhere else? For those of us who have never stayed there, how would we know what the message really meant? In the new campground where we stayed there was another couple who thought the same thing and had a near identical experience. Very poor communication and service. read more

Zipline Review If I can zip, so can you! The short of it - I'm a chicken when it comes to heights and speed. And I was nervous as I got higher and looked down to where I was headed. But the fear passed as I sent my body hurtling past the trees, and I did not fall plop to the ground. Their zip line season 2014 ended on November 1st, and we made plans to get out there while the autumn leaves were still a sight, a few weeks prior. As recommended, we aimed to arrive a half hour before our scheduled tour. We signed away our lives (completed a Zip Tour Liability Release), paid up for our tours (normally $79, but we got a discount through one of those deal vouchers), decided to rent a GoPro for $35, dropped off our backpacks in the car (instead of making use of their available bag check), ran out to Gunstock's Mountainside Outfitters store to rent the GoPro which we were taught to attach to any of our helmets, and returned to get outfitted with the proper straps and their special backpack to carry our gear (which has a small zippered pocket for limited personal items you may wish to tuck in). From each location, we were then directed to the next point of our travels where we were met by another staffer. With virtually no lines (and thus no wait), our tour ended up taking but an hour and 15 minutes for our little group of six, beginning with the short walk over to the Demo Zip of 45 feet where we were familiarized with the equipment that we were strapped onto and that our lives would depend on, till the last member flew in over the pond at the final 5th zip. A conveyor belt ride away from the little Demo Zip was the 2nd 450 feet Training Zip, then onward to the Panorama ski lift for a ~14 minute ride up the mountain for our first of the 3 mountain ziplines - the 273 foot long Summit Zip. Though shorter than the 2nd zipline, the steeper incline and the surrounding trees brought out my anxiety. The gal manning the station was understanding yet comforting, however, as she pointed out that this was her means to commute back down on a daily basis. And this turned out to be the baby of the 3! The 4th Recoil Zip, longest at 3,981 feet long, yet minimal walk away, required a seemingly long walk up a spiral metal staircase due to my fear of heights. The final 5th 3,804 foot long Pistol Zip was a slightly longer hike and a somewhat shorter spiral trip up. These two were longer rides past the trees, with the last finishing with a ride over the parking lot and over the small pond. Each flight path was safely and completely devoid of branches, and were set as a pair of lines so you and a buddy can head off in unison. I didn't know till I was back on solid ground and infront of my computer that Gunstock lays claim to the longest ziplines on the continental United States. Although theirs is the first I've ever been on, I do say I believe it! Wear good shoes tied on tight, spread on the sunblock, and visit the little boys/girls room before starting off on your tour. Sunglasses and water I had brought but did not end up using. I took some photos here and there, but during the ride my camera was safely tucked inside my jacket's zippered pocket - they don't allow cameras to be used while you are on the actual ride, except for the GoPro. It isn't just because they want to make money off you though, as you will need both hands to grip the control - pull down to go, lift up to slow down/stop. Oh Gunstock, how I wish I could love thee. I guess we will lead with the good. For a small mountain, you have big Mountain View's of the lake and the Ski Club seems to be a really good spot for kids. Now with the real, you are not a big enough mountain to charge $96 for a lift ticket. That's only $34 less than Killington. Realistically you should charge $60-80 peak and yea I know you may think I'm splitting hairs but this isn't even the bad. The bad and the thing that really irks me is just how mismanaged you are at capacity. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that maybe this only occurs during busy season but if you show up here morning of a holiday weekend without a ticket you will wait in line hours. Not an exaggeration. And I'd say save yourself the time and buy online but they STILL require you to go and wait for an RFID card. Sorry Gunstock, look you have some charm and I could see myself being a kid here and having a great time but you need to control the controllable. While you can't control your size you could dial the prices back a smidge and improve your ticketing process. read more

2 Hours from Boston and can't complain for a day trip on the slopes. Fun little mountain, although some of the main blue trails were closed due to races the day I was there. I do NOT like the new RFID card lift ticket system in place, it seems to slow the lines up considerably, especially on the Panorama Quad that goes to the summit. Some other skiiers I talked to said it stinks for kids too, because they are too short to have their cards read in their pockets. 3 stars for the mountain. There was also a lift operator that looked like Tom Brady, just saying. 5 stars for the Powderkeg restaurant on the 3rd floor of the lodge!! I don't think this was open last time I came.. but A+ for yummy burgers, a nice craft beer selection, friendly staff and some great live music. Overall, good mountain for a day trip. read more

This is a great mountain. And could not have been better. Let me count the ways. Pros: 1. No rangers or ski patrol to slow you down. In a day of skiing I only saw two ski patrol guys. These two were helping a guy who ran into a tree, coming off a minor lift. How cool is that? Someone else thought he broke his pelvis, but I could not see. 2. Lots of Ice to help you learn how to ski on 'variable conditions' People who say that the snow conditions are up to Mother Nature are correct. The resort has no control of how often they groom (I ran across some corduroy at 3 pm from what must have been a groomer running up the mountain, made a world of difference), when they run their snow guns, where and how often to stash snow, when to close a run, when to open a run, how many to let onto the mountain, etc. Allll up to Mother Nature my boy. All up to nature. also the icy patches help you exercise your core, where you go "Whoops!". (or, whoop, whoop, or crash, see three examples in this review.) I've skied in the east and did not understand quite why it was known as being icy. I was completely humbled and reeducated by this experience. And, somehow, my knees hit the ice too, and they remember. 3. beginner lift that really separates the nubs from the beginners, or at least the beginners from their skis. At the top of the beginner lift there is a let off ramp that as you get off feels like it puts your skis nearly against your chest and then drops at a great pitch down. What a thrill, even for me. This does lead to great conversations at the bottom while you wonder why the lift stops so often. When you get there, you know. 4. Marketing guy does not waste time. I saw a marketing guy filming a marketing video ("Great day here at Gunstock on Smith run. Great snow conditions....yadda yadda"). I asked if he could chat and he just skied away. Must have wanted to get it posted. Contrast this with Zander at Ragged who will talk your ear off helping you with tips and answering the phone when you call for help. I also thought it might be worth correcting the marketing guy about the conditions, but maybe "well groomed" means "variable with patches of ice" at Gunstock. Remember, runs are rated only with respect to other runs at this resort, and presumably grooming status as well. By the way, we are always representing. I had a great conversation with a race official, and with a ski team coach, and in both cases, I liked them and their organisations. I also met a principal that sounded like a principal, and middle school teacher who sounded like a teacher. 5. They want to know who you are and hold personal information like birthday, cell phone and email. This gives you a chance to think more about how they will protect that information. All they really need is not year of birth, not age even, but "are you eligible for that ticket at that day". But noooo, they are more helpful. perhaps to a fault. This is what started the tone for the day, the night before. 6. Food truck closes early so you are encouraged to eat where you really want, which is Beefside! 7. The maps are slightly off. There is a run that exists, obscured by another run's name, and there is a lift that does not quite drop off where it is shown. This gives you a chance to learn! 8. You can't waste time asking questions on their phone, because they do not pick up. Leave a message and we will call you back. 9. This mountain responds well to those with well tuned skis. If you ever thought you wasted money getting your skis tuned, this mountain rewards those with edges. 10. Runs were closed on the ground that were open on the web site. I had to check with a lift operator if they were runs open enough to get down. He was able to check (why should he know, he's at the bottom of the runs!). Cons 1. Some of the folks on the lifts will talk with you, and distract you with great conversations. 2. Lift ticket pick up was too easy. Where to pick up, now, that is another question. I also got to meet a lot of busy and very important people while parking and getting my ticket, and to learn to relax while sitting in my car boxed in, while in the 5 min. zone. 3. the high speed lift moves too fast. 4. Support for Insane Clown Posse (ICP) and Juggalos. A different marketing person asked in an online video for a Whoop Whoop. Whoop Whoop to you to. Who doesn't shred to ICP? 5. the map folds in a way that you can see the trail map fairly clearly without having to open the whole map. This seems like a happy accident, but may be on purpose. Went to the food truck event today, waited over 2.5 hours for food. Totally unorganized, every truck had an incredibly long wait.
