Dr. John Gurskis - Long Beach Pain Management Specialist I met Dr. Gurskis at Memorial Hospital in Long Beach while recovering from neck surgery, and I'm so grateful I did. He was my pain management doctor during my hospital stay, and he took excellent care of me. I appreciated his calm demeanor, how he listened closely, and how thorough he was with my medication plan. Because of the great care I received, I decided to follow him to his private practice--and I'm glad I did. Dr. Gurskis is skilled with epidural injections, trigger point therapy, and medication management. He takes his time during each visit--usually about 30 minutes--so don't expect a rushed appointment. He gets to know you, explains things clearly, and treats you with respect. He does offer telehealth visits once you're established as a patient, and he follows the law strictly--expect regular drug testing and full transparency around your care. Be aware that his office is very firm when it comes to co-pays and deductibles, so make sure everything is in order before your visit. Dr. Gurskis put in a wheelchair! He gave me MEDICATIONS I couldn't take. He NEVER allowed ME TO TALK IF I DID HE WOULD SAY " OK Miss W YOU CAN GO NOW I WON'T BE SEEING YOU ANYMORE" I asked for trigger point injections all he said"I WILL THINK ABOUT IT" He refused to PUT IN A PAIN STIMULATOR HE SAID I wasn't mentally stable" I had the psychological evaluation and the physical found me totally a good candidate that I had no mental problems and the PAIN STIMULATOR would HELP ME grately. He kept playing around with my pain MEDS never discussed it with me. He is a passive aggressive, borderline narcissis. He allowed one of his office staff to come in the room and yell at me. He is not caring sympathetic or understanding. It's hard to find a PAIN MANAGEMENT Doc today. I have an appointment tomorrow . This man saved my life!! After a dramatic nerve surgery from another Dr and complications from that, he diagnosed the problem and was able to get me thru the nightmare of pain with care and expertise. My surgery was years ago and I had the great pleasure of seeing him again with my elderly mother when she was referred to him. They took such care of her and reduced her pain so that she was able to live out her final months in relative peace and comfort. Dr. Gurskis's ethics and professionalism leave space for kindness & caring of the individual who is in acute/chronic pain. Each patient is expected to keep appointments, and stay within the parameters of their pain managenent plan. Dr. John Gurskis is the kindest and most professional Doctor I've had the good fortune to meet. I call him a life-saver.If there was a 6 star rating, I'd give him that! I brought my elderly Mother to him. She is in chronic pain. After a horrendous experience with another, very bad pain doctor, who botched everything from her medication to surgical procedures, Dr. Gursis properly treated my Mother and turned her life around. She is not an easy person to handle but he did it beautifully. I think he saved her life.She is doing very well now...and all the thanks goes to Dr. Gurskis and his wonderful and caring staff. (They always double check on your appointments and are informed and know how to communicate.) Navigating pain is a very tricky and frightening area. There are many doctors you can turn to. But, save your time, ease your mind and head straight to Dr. Gurskis. While my Mother is living a much more comfortable life....he has lifted the strain and emotional pain from family members, too. Soon, my Mother may need surgery and she will again be in the hands of Dr. Gurskis. What a joy to know I never have to worry. I already know everythng will be well. Well My Appt Was Today And I went To his When I contact his office The Receptionist Seem like she was uptight immediately tell me what the doctor isn't going to do so today same attitude or spirit negativity as I wait in the lobby another telling the that his medicine got destroyed he poured some type of liquids on medicines. So now it my turn to see he's going over my history that I gave the receptionist now he asking why you have welfare things of that nature like.he was getting a kick out of it his tone was in my opinion accusatory feeled with hatred just my opinion so he is badgering medicare why my injuries working I don't if a tactic of trust he was doing or what so he seen that I was prescribed medics that can deadly combination I agree fully so he goes to this spill why this why that I told I'm not a doctor but his tone was very intimidating to me if I would've slapped the crap out of him I probably be in jail he was very provoking also he used Whitney Houston as A EXAMPLE And he Started with your people im not dead I know what I heard them raised his voice louder and said I don't play the race card hear yeah right I define racism only wanting the best for your people which is understandable to me but you can prove discrimination very hard to prove he literally thought I was taping our conversation because my phone was ringing I look at it a few times but overall I felt my presence in his office intimated him more than if I became just like him Do I believe He Racist yes just remember my interpretation of racist Do he discriminate No one can prove this unless it's recorded but GOD Knows His Heart would I recommend Someone to be his patient no just by his actions with me it your choice only reason he got one star it was a typo read more

Dr. Gurskis is an amazing compassionate Doctor who is always available if you need him. My Dad had terminal cancer and was in such immense pain that it was unbearable. Dr. Gurskis spent quite a bit of time with him listening and offering a great pain management program to help him in his final months. He gave us his cell number and we were able to call him night or day with questions or concerns we had. When no one else could help my Dad , Dr Gurskis and his staff especially Joy were caring and there for him. Our family is forever in debt to Dr. Gurskis and his assistant Joy. I cannot believe this man. To make a long journey/story as concise yet comprehensive, here we go. I've been a patient for several months and this was about my 6th or 7th visit thus far. I have put up with Gurskis exaggerated chatter that preludes my every session ever since I've been seeing him. No worries...I do appreciate how he explains the history of and how medications work for symptoms. Nonetheless, on this particular rainy day, I arrive for my evening apt, it's been a long Friday at work yet I'm glad to have my follow up appt. today. Well Gurskis comes in and asks me if the rain has "rained on my parade" and I kindly say not it has not and that I have no plans for the weekend. He then says: "You don't want to go to Berkeley and riot with those people in hoodies"? I have no clue what he is talking about and I kindly state "no", thinking to myself why is he asking me this? He goes on a rant talking about how nowadays if people have a different opinion that a university guest speaker then they riot to prevent the speaker from delivering his/her disposition. So I'm using inductive reasoning here to realize that he is upset over political current events. He then switches lanes and begins another rant about the terrorist bomber and his wife (San Bernardino case) and how President Obama error-ed in maintaining a so called "watch list" to Gurskis' liking; and if the former president had only .... Gurskis went on and on. He spent 20 minutes exposing his political frustrations during my visit and my medical concerns being addressed were held captive by his pressing sentiment; however inappropriate and exaggerated they were. I'm feeling very uncomfortable and slightly insulted at this point as he was bating me to buy into his emotional state with commentary. This is a slippery slope which is why I was silent, avoidant and hopeful that he would move on to discuss my medical concerns. After what seemed to be ages of being lectured on his political opinions of which I had no interest in...I finally asked one question and that was, if he thought the former president was a "good president" he went on to state that he did think he did some good things and that he did some things that were reprehensible. OK, now that was the inviting line that I had to respond to and I told him what I thought of historical political figures and how Chattel Slavery was what I considered reprehensible. Gurskis response was: "There has always been slavery". I responded with the fact that whatever he thought of the initial Eastern Europeans as slaves nor the inception of Chattel Slavery was justifiable just because (they) have always existed. I as an African Woman was appalled at his comments and just how cavalier his bedside manner had become to make such comments that truly border malpractice at least in the sense of the oath that he has taken to serve the public and not inflict harm based on his political views. I immediately stated that his insensitive statement was extremely offensive and that he had crossed the line. I stood up and walked out of this political escapade his and closed the examining room door. I proceeded to the front counter and calmly asked for copies of my records. Gurskis came out of the examining room and attempted to engage me. I ignored his presence, upon leaving with a date to return for my records I told Gurskis: "You should be ashamed of yourself" his response was: "You're the one who brought up slavery". Can you believe that response? This man has seen his better days of practice obviously. I will be submitting a letter to American Board of Medicine as well. He never once addressed my medical concerns during this event. Surely, he needs some friends if he hasn't ran them all off because using his practice and his patience as his sounding board is unethical and he surely become too comfortable in his mind to think that he could make such bigoted remarks and get away with them. Retire Gurskis, you have run yourself and your reputation into the ground. I am happily receiving "good medical practice" at Atlas Pain Management Corp. So if any of you Yelpers need professional and ethical reverence and care please try Atlas Pain Management Corp. I am very happy and grateful that I did not allow this man with such hatred toward others different from himself to treat me any longer. In hind sight...Gurskis did me a favor because he busted out of his "hood" and revealed his true nature all by himself which made it clear that I was truly in the wrong place and needed to leave his practice and from under his care immediately for more than the obvious reason. What is really ironic, is that Gurskis wrote up the clinical note for this visit (void of anything medically related) with the sentiment of blaming me (the patient) as possibly having a bad emotional day. Nonetheless, it was clear in his note a direct effort to claim his disposition as one of not supporting slavery in any manner...as the first line. Clearly guilty! read more

Worst Doctor I've ever seen. He is completely unprofessional and made not only extremely racist remarks but also very misogynistic remarks as well. He actually said it would have been better off if I was living in Afghanistan (where I was born) so my husband could beat me for smoking. No joke, he actually said that to me. Not only that but he makes very inappropriate jokes that are only funny to him. His knowledge on medicine, especially pain management leaves much to be desired. He loves the sound of his own voice and will pontificate endlessly on matters that are completely not relevant to your care. He's a chauvinist, and all around terrible human being. I wouldn't wish him on my worst enemy. Do yourself a favor and see someone else. I'm going to actually notify my insurance company about this "doctor" and the kind of treatment I've received. No one should be subjected to abuse and these kinds of remarks when they're in pain and at their most vulnerable. He should be reported to the medical board. Waited 1 hr and 15min. He did spend about the same amount of time with me though. He spent the time trying to diagnose the problem, in a field he doesn't specialize in, which I have seen 8 doctors who are specialists in the problem before him who do not know what the problem is. He apparently cracked the case though! Laughable. He did a very painful exam (screaming in pain) and at the end of it all he didn't even help me with the pain. He told me there was nothing that could do for the pain. So I wasted time, money, and had increased pain due to his exam. He'll talk your ear off. Save your time and go elsewhere. I saw him for two years,, sometimes he was professional (rarely) and other times (quite frequently) unprofessional. He is very opinionated. Frequently, I would have to listen to his silly jokes or listen to his alt-right opinions (Clinton is part of the Mafia, Obama was born in Africa, there is no such thing as global warning, to name a few of his views) just in order to finally have him get down to my problems, to which he doesn't listen anyway or review my chart. He's always right and the patient is always wrong. He tries to diagnosis your other medical problems for which he is not qualified, slamming especially my subspecialists for tests or directions given that - in his opinion - were not necessary. I got lectured on the "right" way to do certain things that went totally against everything my board certified specialists told me to do. Again,he was right and they were wrong. Specialties he is NOT QUALIFIED IN OR BOARD CERTIFIED IN. The last time saw him, I walked out shell shocked by his inappropriate comments about my PCP, my personal and psychological makeup, and the bleak outcome I would have if I went through with surgery. That was an hour lecture and he was more interested in pontificating his views and never spent a moment on my pain management issue. I left and never went back. I should have done it long before. But thanks to my PCP, I was referred to a pain management specialist who LISTENS TO ME and doesn't make judgments. read more
