    Guru time!!

We've seen that be having lot of rain recently. Which makes me really saag paneer and chai . My bff is starting to feel a little under the weather... And I just knew curry and chai would do the trick and fully restore his health. Chicken korma for him. Of course it was delicious and service the best of the best. I love my dreamy and flavorful saag paneer. I love coming here because I feel like I am being taken care of by my family .

Guru Indian Cuisine on Sycamore Street in the heart of beautiful downtown Newtown may have just changed hands, but the kitchen is still headed in the right direction. Unchanged menu and primarily vegetarian oriented with a reasonable concession to the meat eaters in the community, it continues to ably create delicious and colorful dishes to soothe the savage beast. We dropped in for a Labor Day repast and found the house moderately full, but with the perfect table in the large window facing Sycamore. Service was provided by a young man who knew his curries and efficiently provided all the assistance needed. We opened with draft Rupee Lager which arrived in glasses accentuating its rich amber color. Definitely a mid-market mild beer for the madding crowd. From there we ordered Avocado Chaat and Veggie Samosas as appetizers. The chaat looked like tiny armadillos that had to be handled delicately as they were in a round thin shell that cracked easily upon first bite, allowing their delicate semisweet inner secret to spill out onto hands and plate. A first for me, and I really liked it. The Samosas were freshly deep fried and full of mashed tatoes and green peas. The tamarind dipping sauce was excellent. Our mains were Chicken Korma (spicy), Kashmiri Chicken (moderate heat) and Vegetable Manchurian from the Indo-Chinese menu. Loved all the sauces and fresh chicken, while the Manchu was not as crisp as advertised, but still enjoyable. We ordered enough to bring home a bit of everything for the working members of our fam, and they really devoured the "leftovers" when they got home last night. Word on the street is that a second Indian house is opening soon up the block. Wonder what the extra competition will do for quality and prices? Gotta think only good things can happen.

Our Indian home away from home restaurant where you are treated like royalty and served incredible cuisine. You can taste a little be of Priya and Ashni Guru in every bite. What better time than Autumn to come to taste the delicacies from their kitchen than with their brand new AUTUMN-inspired special menu. Let me get you drooling with these appetizers: must try Butternut Squash soup with cinnamon, paprika, turmeric, pumpkin seeds, their INCREDIBLE lamb sloppy baba- minced grass-fed lamb, Turmeric, coriander, cinnamon, cloves, served with fresh lemon and buns.... you'll be licking the plate clean. How about some of the exciting autumn entrees: Corn Bhartha- sweet corn, ginger, garlic paste, tomatoes, onions, turmeric, and coriander, you'll be licking the bowl. Their chicken or vegan pumpkin curry-- pumpkin, turmeric, ginger, onions, garlic and cinnamon. Was fabulous. We left a little room for dessert--- SHrikhand cannoli was off the charts--- saffron shrikhand, and cannoli shell. We also tried the pumpkin naan-- pumpkin, brown sugar and cinnamon and we dipped it in the pumpkin curry. WOW-- what a fabulous menu. See my photos and don't blame me if you drool over your cellphone. Make a reservation before this menu is history.

Inside of some vegetable pakora, so good and I love that it's gluten free

I love this restaurant. Their food is so good, they are SOOO thoughtful and considerate about how they label dietary restrictions. I've been able to try lots of new things because I can easily see what is dairy and gluten free. One time I ordered from them during the day and they gave free papadum with a "Support Small Businesses" sticker which I thought was such a nice touch. The food tastes higher quality than in years' back too. I often get shrimp curry and the shrimp tastes a lot fresher now. (The only issue I've ever had is one time I ordered curry with vegetables and shrimp, veggies for +$5, shrimp for +$16, and they only sent 2 shrimp. Usually that is not an issue.) Overall though, I love what a staple this restaurant has been in the Newtown community. I love that they take the time to think of things like adding pumpkin into some recipes for fall, etc - it's just fun and shows that they really care about what they do here.

    Chicken Vindaloo - Medium

It's the smell that gets you. Sitting at a stop light with the windows open at the edge of the Borough, you're hit with multiple waves. First it's the scent of grilled lamb. Then the scent of warming spice. waft from the corner Sycamore and Jefferson. That's all it takes. It's not what you would expect from this colonial town that dates back more than 300 years. But Guru's take on Indian fare in the middle of what was once wide swaths of cattle and corn fields is some of the best dining around. My dining partner just dips her pinky toe in the spice pool, and mild was too tame the last time we took an Indian dip. Medium was our path at Guru's. We started with Indian Poutine - an inventive little take on the Québécois classic. Crisp fries, korma sauce, shredded paneer cheese and cilantro were a great little way to start. Just a little flaky sea salt would have rounded out the dish. The salt in the cheese didn't bring enough of the other flavors out like they should been. Her chicken Archari had good spice and a unique tang from its Indian pickle, garlic and ginger. My chicken vindaloo, even at medium, provided enough heat to turn my ears red and brought sweat to my brow. Granted, it's August and there wasn't a breeze to be felt, but I felt the chilies, and my heat tolerance is usually pretty high. Regardless, it was quite good and with the generous portion of rice, filled me up enough to have a lunch for the next day. We ate outside. The inside was clean and modern with solid air conditioning with a full bar. Skipped the alcohol tonight and went with the prerequisite mango lassi and a nice cinnamon iced tea. Our server was young (all his Council Rock classmates walking around knew his name and seemingly waited around to say hello) and was attentive and polite despite the female distractions. Usually I can find something to poke a hole in a place, but with Guru's, that's not the case. Nice little dining experience!

We stopped by when visiting the area on a beautiful summer day that coincided with the resumption of outdoor dining in the region. We weren't ready for take the plunge so with a craving for Indian delights, the order was placed via the old school method of phone call and delivered to our vehicle curbside by a friendly employee upon arrival. We went a bit wild as it had been a while since indulging in the amazing cuisine of South Asia, and don't regret this decision for a second! Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Rogan Josh were both flavorful. The CTM (mild) was nicely balanced without too much emphasis on cream, this is hard to get right and they nailed it. Lamb Rogan Josh (also mild) was flavorful, highly recommend this for the lamb lover. Naan was nicely charred without being burnt and the pieces are large. They give you PLENTY of rice, so save some sauce and dump it on if you want to stretch leftovers. Samosas were thrown in at no cost, not what I usually order but they were good. For what it's worth, high quality containers are used for take out. We encountered no leakage following the 30 minute ride home. There is a large outdoor patio should you wish to "dine in." Be careful of the parking lot as it's a bit rough. We'll definitely be back, bucolic ride for delicious food is a win-win!

If you read nothing else - ORDER THE GARLIC CHICKEN…read more Ok, now for everything else....we decided to try out this place, which felt incredibly taboo bc we LOVE our Indian Palace restaurant. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the friendliest person behind the counter. She led us to our table where we enjoyed reading through their expansive menu. We decided on some samosa's, lamb korma, chicken Tikka and the star of the show - GARLIC CHICKEN. I'm going to start with the Garlic Chicken because I have never had something like this before anywhere else and it is listed as an appetizer. If you love garlic as much as I do, please do yourself a favor and RUN here to get this. My husband, son and I FOUGHT over this plate because it was so delicious. We had to order a whole extra basket of naan to dip it in because it was SPECTACULAR. The rest of the plates were very tasty as too! The Korma was delicious and soft. And I haven't met a naan I didn't like. Really aside from the garlic chicken what made this experience great was the service. It was a young woman who noticed I was speaking Spanish to my son and also began speaking Spanish to us. She was incredibly thoughtful and kept checking in on us as well. Overall, we look forward to returning. On the weekend they run a buffet which I am super into to try more of their dishes.

The inside was clean and appealing, service was friendly and prompt. I ordered simple items for sake of time and familiarity. The veggie samosas I ordered were ok and tasted like the frozen type. They were not greasy and had minimal spice/flavor. I would pass on them next time. For my main lunch I had the .... 3. Chicken Tikka Masala lunch special - lentils, rice, plain naan and salad. It was a good lunch deal for around $12. The lentils were fresh, rice was aromatic and fresh, salad was simple and the chicken tikka was good. The chicken was fresh, masala lacked the spice I was hoping for, but was a decent portion size. I could have used more naan than the one piece that came with the meal. I boxed about half of it all for take home. During checkout, the staff was so nice and thankful for the visit. They gave me a parting gift of Kheer for dessert. Unfortunately it had an off flavor so I dumped it, but it was the thought that counted. I'd certainly return if in the area to try some of their other entrees. The menu is sizable with around a dozen non veg apps, two dozen veg apps, 8-12 variants of lamb, chicken and goat dishes, over 2 dozen vegetarian meals and almost a dozen different biryanis. Thanks guys!

I am not an adventurous eater, but I could kick myself for not going sooner. The food was that delicious and very importantly reasonably priced. My husband and I decided to try it during a date night, and I can't wait to go back. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Our starter was Tandoori Samsa. Our entrees were the Classic Lamb and Plov Samarkand. For dessert we shared the Pahlava. If I had to change anything I would have ordered my own Pahlava. We found out that most of the people (regulars) who usually come here are on their vacation season so it was not an issue getting a six-top reservation with only a day's notice. The restaurant is huge with at least two mega rooms downstairs and one upstairs. We actually went to the upstairs door to check in only to be told we had to go to the downstairs door and check in there. Once we did, the staff asked if we would be ok with being in the "party" room where there would be a DJ. We were fine with that and the staff was more than happy to accommodate us. Once at our table, the extensive menus made it almost too difficult to decide what we wanted. May want to consider reducing the food options here. My wife and I split a tomahawk steak. Once we ordered it, we were told we should probably move to an eight-top because we would have more space. The place was almost empty at 6:15pm on a Saturday so we got to move and give us some more room. We also had two serving of Plov, a prime NY strip, a roasted beet salad, and a chicken fingers with fries. We added some bread, too, along with some compote. The Plov was some of the best we've ever had with lots of tender meat. Both steaks were cooked to our liking. Fries were killer and the chicken fingers were fine. I did not care for the compote as I'm used to it with fruit still in the drink. At about 7pm, the DJ started but there was no separate party which is what we thought was going to show up. The DJ sang some and played up-tempo dance music but also threw in some known music like Ob-Bla-Dee Ob-Bla-Dah from the Beatles also in the dance music style. So much fun after drinking a lot of our BYOB alcohol. Service was excellent and more than accommodating for us. He even advised when we were getting ready to leave that it was raining hard and we could stay until it died down. The restaurant is colorful with lights and designs on the walls including projector lights and white linen sheets above. The place was clean and also the bathrooms on the lower rear level. $305 not including tip for six adults which included two steaks, two Plov, chicken fingers with fries, three breads, and a compote. I mention a lot with my reviews that I'd come back to a place. I really can't wait to return to Samarkand! It was just a lot of fun with excellent food and service. I hope it's just as good when the place is slammed and full.
