My family has been purchasing bikes from Gus' for the past 10 years. Till now, service has been great. So I was disappointed when my wife told me about her experience with Jeff at the shop today. Stopped by the shop for a tire repair and stood at the counter waiting her turn for Jeff to help. When another customer then entered the store, Jeff ignored my wife and proceeded to help the gentleman. It wasn't until Jeff had finished with the gentleman that he asked my wife what she needed. Not sure there is much room for a misunderstanding here. The way my wife was treated was rude and disrespectful. Please do better, Jeff. read more

i took my bike to Gus Bike Shop. It was in rough shape having sat in sweltering heat of SC. I asked to have it returned to riding condition..fix flat tires, check the chain, replace handle grips I bought from their selections. Picked it up after longer than estimated wait. it was still filthy and made worse by attempt to replace the grips, which was done by forcing them on and poking holes in the ends as I waited after being told it was ready. I bought different grips and Youvtube video showed a quick way to remove and install. Tires wouldn't stay filled. So the bike sat another two years. I decided to replace the tires. I found Gus Bike used wrong size inner tubes. The old tires called for the 2.125 size. I found the inner tubes they charged me to install to be size 1.75. No wonder The tires were too flat to ride. Tim and Jeff (Geoff?) are the kind of cyclists and mechanics we need more of! I downloaded Yelp just to write this! Tim saw my touring bike loaded up outside of a convenience store, struck up a conversation with me about the Atlantic Coast ride, and brought me to the shop (which was closed btw) where I met Tim. They gave me a fresh pair of socks and one of their stickers and then offered to let me camp in their backyard for the night (I'm a broke 27 year old and they could tell haha). After a mishap with my bike rack. I was in need of brake replacement and hand grips, I rode to Gus Bike shop. They could not have been friendlier or easier to deal with. Within 15 minutes my brake line was replaced I had new hand grips and I was on my way. I was worried that I would need to leave the bike but they helped me quickly and easily. You cannot find a friendlier bike shop. Highly recommend, prices were fair and reasonable. During Covid you never know what type of reception you get a bike shop, not here! read more

I have no idea why this bike shop gets such great reviews. Thought I'd support local business, and brought my bike for a tune up. It was operating very well, but I needed new brakes, and the chain looked at. When I brought it home, it was constantly skipping gears, and the braking was really weird. I brought it back, and they apparently took a look at it and charged me-AGAIN. I rode it all summer with it operating like crap-had to hold the gear shift to keep it in gear. Brought it recently to Goodale's in Hooksett, NH where I purchased it. The brakes were on backwards, the chain really loose, and the cables were compromised. I should have taken the hint when the guy ahead of me at Gus's was complaining about his bike not operating properly who was a serious rider. I don't know how this place stays in business, but I will never return. read more

I wandered in here on a random Sunday since the two local shops in Exeter were closed and I needed a helmet right away for a ride. I didn't know Gus' existed prior to this, but fortunately Yelp pointed me here. Not only did I buy a helmet, but I was very impressed with the friendly service I received as soon as I stepped through the door. I'm used to either being ignored when entering since I'm not one of the recognized riders, or being treated like I'm wasting the shop's time since I have an old bike. (1980 Trek road bike) I was very impressed right out the gate. I decided to test this again by just coming back in to "wander" and again received great service by everyone I met. After this second visit I was sold. I came back a third time and decided to buy a new Felt Z4. Several members of the staff greeted me, and I had the help of multiple employees when test riding and getting opinions on the right size bike. I was never pressured into buying, and in fact was told to come back multiple times to test ride again if I wanted. That sold me, and I ordered my bike on the spot. I have been in to a lot of shops in NYC, Seattle, and the other guys in Exeter, but until I found Gus' I hadn't found "my shop". You don't need to be the cool kid to receive excellent service here, you just need to walk through the door. read more

I have called and left messages more than once and seldom get a call back. The last time, I called back 6 hours later and they shamelessly said, oh, no one checked the messages. Since I originally posted my previous 1-star review, Gus's Bike Shop reached out to me to try to improve on my experience. I've not yet had the opportunity to get back to the shop, but willingness to improve on criticisms is worth a lot in my book. I'm encouraged by Justin P's review. After I get a chance to revisit, I'll update my review. Previous Review: The desk service was slow and inconsiderate. I stopped by simply to pick up some lube for my bike chain. There were two groups of customers in line in front of me and three staff members that I could see in the store. The first customer seemed to be a mother and a son, and it sounded like the son had discovered a job opportunity while they were in the store. The second pair was a couple, and a staff member was still assisting them select gear while they were in line. I waited several minutes to make my small purchase but eventually recognized that I was going to continue to be ignored and left without making a purchase. i fully understand that sometimes there's not enough staff to go around, and I have no problem with waiting. I do have a problem with being ignored. Both staff members working the desk saw me there and didn't even acknowledge my presence; at a minimum, a "we'll be with you as soon as we can" is warranted. However, they were more than happy to see me in line waiting just long enough to make sure I knew they were looking away and ignoring me. It strikes me that taking job applications and assisting customers at the cashier's desk is inappropriate when there are customers simply waiting to pay. However, that may be how they conduct business, so be aware of this when going into the shop. That said, it's egregious for staff practice to make eye contact and then actively ignore you. read more

The best local bike shop with super-attentive, knowledgeable service! They always service my bike expeditiously with attention to detail! Jeff Latimer is amazing and his staff is the BEST! I bring in my bike before every race to have it looked over, evaluated for any issues that could be spotted in advance of a malfunction...the staff is awesome, patient and friendly...ALWAYS. I got a terrific deal on my Felt tri bike which I have loved from day 1! Jeff took a long time getting me the proper fit and set-up and I've never been disappointed! Got my first bike in a very long time at Gus' and the staff was very helpful. They spent a lot of time with me, helping me figure out the right style of bike for me and doing all the measurements for the proper fit. I never felt rushed or forced towards a particular bike that was out of my price range. Went back the next day with some basic questions and the staff was again really helpful even though I wasn't making a purchase. read more

My kids now in their 40s have bought bikes at gus' so I went there this spring. I could not have been treated better. They took time and made sure that I got the right bike. I've brought it in a couple of times for adjustments and always had a pleasant experience. Other businesses should take lessons from them on customer service. read more

Disappointing, nonchalant lack of customer service and clearly not interested in making sales. I called ahead from Sweden as I was planning to visit the States on business and was after a pair of PowerTap P1 pedals. I wanted to arrange beforehand that they would have the pedals in stock for when I arrived so I called them and spoke with a Jeff who said to email him. After needing to send a follow-up email, I got the short response that Gus's bike shop has decided not to carry these any more due to low margins. Even after offering to pay additional markup to make it profitable for them, they still said "we'll pass". I ended up buying the pedals from a competitor who went out of their way to accommodate me and even held the stock until I collected it earlier this week. read more
