A great big thanks to Angela and Dan! I first called , Angela said by all means come on in. As I live in the neighborhood I was there in three minutes. Angela walked out the side door to look at the bike's computer. As I had been unable to remove it in order to determine its efficieny she easily removed it from its base. As Dan was pulling in from a bike tuneup ride he then was asked to look things over and proceeded to attach a new sensor to the spoke. I am a student and I can only leave campus on Sundays (classes Mon-Fri, and XC meets on Sat). Guess when they're closed? Sunday. They have no hours on Sunday. I'm not sure if this is a staffing issue or an intentional decision, but it seems like it could be resolved very easily. I guess my bike will stay broken all term until I can go back to Boston and get it fixed at a place with better hours. read more

It does not get any better than Exeter Cycles as a locally owned and operated bike shop. Over the years this shop has morphed from a strict roadie shop to more focus on family and even e-bikes. This is not to discount that they have the best road bike equipment available and will get anything you need or want. Todd has brought in a friendly and extremely knowledgeable staff. There is no reason to buy anywhere else. Often times walk-ins are serviced immediately for small repairs, even when their service backlog is extensive. One great experience here has been offset by an extremely lousy one, and I no longer deal with or recommend this place. I am all for supporting my local bike shop. I was in need of a wheel, and despite the fact that it's over an hour drive each way, I took the trip up to Exeter Cycles to give them my business. They had the wheel I needed in stock, and I was even willing to pay the almost 300% upcharge on the price vs. Amazon or eBay. (All bike shops are more expensive, so that's a non-issue.) What soured me on this place was as I was paying almost $300 for a single wheel that I could have picked up for under $100 online, I asked the bike tech to swap the disc rotor over as well. For the uninitiated, this is simply unscrewing six screws, moving the rotor to the new wheel that I was buying from them, and screwing them back in. That's it. It's at most a 60 second job. The clerk told me that there would be a $5 charge for it, and I honestly thought he was kidding. I jokingly mentioned that I was driving two hours round trip to support their shop, and buying a $300 wheel, and they were honestly considering charging me five dollars to unscrew and re-screw six bolts? The somewhat smug response from the clerk was "we get paid for our time". Now, we all get paid for our time. I took the time to drive there instead of going locally, and took the time to give them my business instead of going online. I paid the $5, and have never been back. I have since then spent several thousand dollars on new bikes, more gear and assorted parts and services from one of their competitors over in Epping, and couldn't be happier. If the management of Exeter Cycles reads this, I hope that $5 was worth it, because you would have had a lifetime customer otherwise. Your customers respect the fact that your time is valuable, but you need to teach your staff that your customers time is valuable as well. If someone tells you that they made a special two hour trip just to give you their business, do yourselves a favor and don't nickel and dime them at the register. Your customers are willing to pay a bit more for parts because of the service you provide - both technical service, and customer service. read more

I was visiting my brother in NH and wanted new pedals put on my Trek. It was a Saturday and first day of summer so I didnt expect this was possible. Not only did he put the pedals on, he took a lot of time measuring my shoes and setting up the cleats. When I said it was my first time with clips, he adjusted the pedals for easy access. I just tried them out and had no problems. While I love Wheelworks where I bought my bike, Saturdays are a zoo and no way would I have been able to do this. Finally - a pleasant Saturday to cycle in March! So - I cycled from home in Melrose, MA, up to Exeter, planned on stopping for a quick, healthy lunch at Ani's Bagels, and then a brief visit with a dear elderly friend at Langdon Place. I would then loop back to Melrose - for a 106-mile ride. At about 40 miles my shifting was skipping a bit. I hesitated stopping at Exeter Cylces; they looked busy. Well, I peeked in the back door, and a mechanic (Ezra) was working on a bike but said with a smile, "Come on in, I'll take a quick look." Within 5 minutes he made a few adjustments, and when I offered to pay he said, "No charge." So off I happily went - with a bike that shifted beautifully. Thank you, Ezra, and thank you Exeter Cycles! And yes, I had a fantastic 106-mile bike ride! This is one of my favorite routes. read more
