So first off definitely don't judge a book by its cover! Inside is cozy with plenty of seating and extremely clean! Our server Elliot was awesome and greeted us immediately and took our drink and appetizer order. We got the fried pickle chips with ranch and they were fresh made not frozen out of a bag. Highly recommend them. My wife ordered the gyro which came with a side and she got the macncheese. I ordered the club sandwich on ryr bread with a side of extra crispy fries. Everything came out as soon as our appetizer was finished and was prepared to perfection. Nice generous portion sizes. The fries were perfect golden brown and not greasy or soggy and oversalted. I have 0 complaints and I am very picky since I grew up in the restaurant business. Don't pass this place up I promise you will love it! Can't wait to go back and try something else! Nice little restaurant. The food is so good. We were visiting some friends and they took us here. I ordered the corned beef hash, egg and turkey bacon and the hubs ordered a pancake, grits and bacon. I had high hopes for this place after a new owner took over. The store renovation looks great, menus are sexy, and service is quick and friendly. However, on both visits, the food quality, taste, and presentation coupled with a low sanitation grade of 92.5, gives me pause. Persistently poor scores = poor food. Simple as that. We just finished having dinner at "Gus" in Monroe NC. the place is clean and fresh the building is about thirty years old but the inside has been totally remodeled, freshly painted and it looks great, My wife had Portobello mushroom chicken, and she said that it was exhalent, I had the flounder and it was also excellent, The service was very good, the owner came by the table to check on us, and chat for a bit. and the hostess is so sweet. Cutest little diner ever! Amazing service and food, SUPER clean! The only downside is trying to decide between breakfast and dinner because both are so good. The owner is also the head chef and you can tell he really cares about the food he serves. He often offers up creative and yummy specials that aren't on the menu. Very good amount for an affordable price.Recently we went with my sister and other ladies and she got chilaquiles verdes with beans(which is normally a Mexican breakfast) and she was amazed with the taste and how it truly felt like an authentic mexican breakfast. Our 1st visit was this evening. The inside is nice and clean, even the restroom, too. All the staff were pleasant and friendly. Looking back, I'm not sure why we ordered basically all fried foods, but anyway... We started with the fried pickle chips. They were great and came with a generous container of ranch dressing for dipping. The good kind of ranch, too! He had the Highwayman burger (double pattie, cheese, onion ring, egg-over-medium) and fries. It tasted great! I had the Fisherman combo (2 pieces filet of flounder, popcorn shrimp, 2 hushpuppies & 2 sides), fried okra and fried squash. Mine was yummy, too! Everything was seasoned & cooked to have the perfect flavor and it was all hot & fresh. Even the water tasted good. (Usually, Monroe water tastes like it was dipped out of a mud puddle). Got the Loaded baked spaghetti.It was terrible.I told waitress that it was so spicy and had to much red pepper in it that it was uneatable.Her response was that a couple of other customers had complained about the same thing.She said she would let them know. She came back and gave me a togo box. We paid and as we were leaving she told us again that she would tell the cook about the complaint.The cost was around 15.00. Gus Family Restaurant is a modest place off the main road a bit. If you know that going in, the look of the building will not be a disappointment. The wait staff was friendly, if not a tiny bit over worked. My waitress was hustling my entire visit but I never felt like I had to wait on anything. The food came out fast. I got the hand breaded fried chicken with white gravy. It was a bit bland, but that is typical for this type of establishment. However the meal was a very good deal considering the prices. Way better than fast food, and cost the same. I worked recommend this place to the budget friendly eater, but be prepared for modest surroundings and you'll want to add salt. read more
