Divey, old school diner that's been here since they paved Roosevelt Blvd out front. And it looks it, too. Customers fill the place, however, as they sling grits, scramble eggs, pour endless cups of cheap coffee, and offer meat-n-three daily specials with side choices as long as your arm. Observing some of the low ratings most were upset with the credit card service fee or higher prices. I figured it was food quality or cleanliness issues since their sanitation grades are barely A level (93 seems to be what they can muster routinely). Which should give one pause since the serious issues are out of patrons sights; namely, how they manage, store, and prep your food. That said, I'll probably roll in again for a breakfast sammie or biscuit and pay the tiny service fee on my credit card. It's a dive diner and it's old and can use a deep cleaning. The walls are mirrors so you can watch yourself eat. If you can get past al that, I highly recommend this place for breakfast. The service was awesome. I get the feeling these women have been serving up hotcakes and sausage gravy biscuits for years. The kitchen must be pretty efficient too. I dined alone. Had to wait a few minutes for a booth. It's all booth seating. But then everything else happened like a well timed machine. I had a ham and cheese omelet with crunchy hash browns just the way I ordered them with dry wheat toast. The unsweetened iced tea which fuels me in the mornings (no coffee for this girl) was very good and the refills kept coming. We came to have breakfast here and arrived @ 10:20 AM and was given the lunch menu with a limited breakfast menu which began at 11 am. I requested the breakfast menu that was not so limited since it was still before 11 am. I noticed the breakfast that we ordered was listed for more than the menu price on our ticket. As we were checking out I brought it to the hostess attention that I believe we were being over charged for one of breakfast plates, she stated "the full breakfast menu ended at 10 am so the prices would no longer be honored." I questioned her with this since the limited breakfast menu included in the lunch menu stated it began at 11am and the item was not listed on that. The breakfast menu stated no where that it ended at 10 am and the prices from 10 am-11 am would be priced at management discretion. All she could say was that's just how it is and there is nothing that can be done about it. At the conclusion of this they were talking amongst themselves towards us in Spanish not aware that my husband knew Spanish, and when questioned about their conversation the smiled and one said she was saying thank you. Our issue is not the amount we paid, it's the dishonesty of the restaraunt and the disrespect given to their customers. So very disappointed, more and more places are becoming this way . read more

Incredible service. The place is a local gem, the waitresses work so hard and despite being regularly crowded they keep everything going. The food is good nothing fancy but definitely delicious. The decor has been the same for as long as I've been alive with the exception of dividers added for Covid and a recently updated bathroom. No pic, was just passing trough and wanted breakfast. With a wafflehouse in the parking lot, it was a tough choice, but wanted to give this local spot a shot. We'll, it's a old place, and I mean old. Probably never been updated, and that's not saying it's a bad thing, just old school restaurant. Had a typical breakfast with some pancakes, eggs, bacon. To start this off, the sweet tea was amazing. I came here with a group two years ago and it was so good, very glad we came back again. Very cute restaurant that has exceptionally good food, not a long wait for the food, waitress was also nice and very helpful. BREAKFAST for BREAKFAST! Almost as good as breakfast for lunch but pretty distantly back from breakfast for dinner, aka "brinner". This is a short order sort of restaurant. Maybe not as short as the one in My Cousin Vinny, but short. Two pages of eggs, waffles and such. Keep It Simple and Short. I went with the two eggs (over medium) with corned beef hash, grits (based on Melissa's recommendation) and toast. And coffee. Coffee comes in a large mug, which is awesome. While the gals did come around with refills often enough, it's nice to have your coffee fixed just the way you like it for more than two sips before the cup is empty. And it's decent coffee. Not that fancy caramel macchiato latte half caf stuff. This is coffee, nice and simple. Breakfast arrived on three plates. Eggs and grits on one, corned beef hash on the next and the toast on the third. Nice big eggs and the portions of grits and hash were excellent. As for the flavor, all were really good. The grits were maybe a little salty, but it's hard to match everyone's taste. The hash was plenty meaty and the eggs arrived just as I had ordered them. A good value of fat and carbs and protein for $5.10. With the coffee and a tip, it was rounded off to $10. Good deal. I like this place. read more

This is a familiar name to long time residents of Charlotte and Monroe. It has been around for over 50+ years. We happen to be in the area and stopped to have lunch. What a mistake. While waiting to have our order taken, a waitress walked by with an empty coffee carafe and the sun hit it just right. It was past filthy. It looked as if it had not been washed since it's purchase. My eye caught something white on the floor under the table, I glanced and it was covered with napkins, Q-tips and food. In other words, not the cleanest establishment. We were a party of 4. 1 of us had stomach cramps and diarrhea about 4 hours later, 1 had nausea and stomach pain (did not have the same food), the other 2 were unaffected. A staple of Monroe and one of my favorite stops when headed out of town and towards Myrtle Beach, SC. This place has been around forever and I swear the food is just great probably b/c the grill they use has years of flavor infused into it. I've had a few lunches here but really it's the breakfast that brings me out. Cheap too, $5.85 will buy you 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, hash browns or grits and bacon and sausage! Not too shabby! My husband and I have been going here for years but we won't be back until they stop charging a "convenience fee" for credit card payments. This is bizarre and not a competitive business practice for a restaurant. I have been passing this place about once a week for the last month and decided to stop today. It was a very pleasant dining experience. My waitress was friendly, the portions were generous and the food tasted good. I got an egg plate with livermush, and other than the livermush not being fried crispy, I had no complaints. As a big guy, I did get nervous when I saw this was an all booth restaurant, as I tend to feel smooshed in a booth. But, the booth was very comfortable and actually had plenty of room. I'm giving this place four stars because of the food itself. The best home cooked food I've had in a long time. Everything was fresh and so reasonably priced. I had the flounder meal for 8 bucks and they had the nerve to give me a slice of bread AND cornbread. It was fried so crispy!!! Heaven. I hear they have one in Charlotte now. I have to try and see if it is just as good. My only disappointment in this establishment is how old it is on the inside and outside, and the bathroom. It needs a serious upgrade immediately. This was one of the first places we ate at when we arrived in NC. We went in pretty early so we were seated right away. We sat at a booth but they don't have high chairs for kids. (That's why 4 stars) Server was friendly and attentive. Food came out hot and fast. I ordered eggs, bacon & pancakes. Pancakes were huge and super fluffy. Eggs were scrambled perfectly. Sorry, but we can't do it! If you have ever been inside a house that previously had a roach infestation you know there is a certain smell, this place has that smell! Eeeew! Gross! I hate that I can't get past having the knowledge of what that smell means, because the food is really great! Basic American Bkfst. Service is proper. Would not take a client ,but have been in 3 times, solo. They charge a fee if U use a credit card & when I did not see @ "salsa" on the menu where sides are listed, I asked if the condiment was available, I was told yes & it came out w/ my order ,(1oz.)
