The obvious question with Gusta Pizza is whether or not they make great pizza, or is it great pizza for 5 euros? The short answer is that this is great pizza for 5 euros, but would be just OK pizza for 15 bucks. Gusta Pizza is very popular with the American college student backpacker crowd - and I can see why - it's a fantastically good deal and is an order of magnitude better than the cheap slices that they're probably used to back at school. The pizza itself is OK. The pizzas are made to order and baked in a wood oven and take about 10 minutes to make after ordering. They are Neapolitan style, but the crust was lacking some of the chewiness that one would get with a more expensive Neapolitan Pizza. I thought my pizza was perhaps 30 seconds under cooked - the crust seemed very slightly undercooked and was missing the char thats usually associated with a wood fired pizza. The shop is very crowded with very few tables, but most customers take the pizza to go and eat it on the steps of the nearby church. I must admit that having an OK pizza for only 5 euros with a plastic cup of chianti on the church steps at 9pm at night surrounded by a bunch of 20 year old backpackers was a pretty memorable and enjoyable experience. read more

Being on this side of the river we decided to check out Gusta Pizza since it was so close to us and has great reviews. To be honest, I think this place is a little overhyped. The restaurant has great ratings and pictures on here however, the pizza is not all that great. The restaurant itself is quite spacious, there's two rooms with tables. Just like any other restaurant in Italy, If there's two open seats at a table of four, you will be sat there and will share your seat with another group- no biggie. This restaurant does offer soft drinks, water, sweet tea, a couple of bottled beers and has a variety of wines. Now the pizza was just alright. I enjoyed the taste of the dough however, my boyfriend and I both felt like we had a lot of dough. The topping/sauce ratio was a bit off with the amount of dough we had. You can see our pizzas are not like some of the ones pictured on here. Please see pictures below. The staff was friendly. When you come in, you order at the register and either take your pizza to go or wait for a table. There is no table service so once you get your pizza that's it, so make sure you order your drinks ahead of time. There were about 8-10 pizzas to choose from and this restaurant occasionally does a "pizza of the day" with a pizza different from what's on the menu. Their menu is short (and those who do their research know about the Pesto special). Why have a long menu - do a few things well. Most people in line are discussing their orders and how to capitalize for sharing. We did the same. The inside of the restaurant is small, so get there early to be able to grab a table or you will have to find someplace close by to sit and eat outside - but with the beautiful sights of Florence, this isn't hard to do. We ordered a Pesto (special), Calabrese (tomatoes, mozzarella, spicy salami, basil, EVOO), Gustapizza (tomatoes, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, arugula and parmesan) and margherita.We actually ordered 2 margs - we should have capitalized and ordered a 5th variety. This is long overdue...by about 5 years...but please visit this spot if you're in Florence. It's on the better side of the river ;) The pesto pizza and spicy salami were my favorites. Hard to get seating inside but just go outside to sit in the Piazza! And obviously buy some cheap wine to drink it with. The best in Italy. WOW great pizza!!! I wouldn't say it's the best pizza I've had in florence but it's pretty darn good. All of our pizzas were wonderful, however I don't recommend the truffle pizza because you can't really taste the truffle and it's kind of bland. Other than that pizza is it a wonderful place!! So finally made it to Florence after a disastrous run in with food poisoning in Rome and was dying to put that behind me and get cracking on some good eats while back in one of my favorite cities in Italy. Was able to walk over to the St Regis Florence which is an absolutely gorgeous establishment and then walk along Arno river to all the action near pointe vecchio. After taking in the sights and the breath of the fresh Florence air, we decided to grab some pizza to satiate the carb void that have been left over three days of emptiness and a friend recommended hitting up Gusta. This joint is right near Palazzo Pitti and you will find it with the lines out the door and when you start to see the trails of pizza boxes being thrown away. The shop itself is tiny and seats probably only 6-8 tables inside and is cramped with folks standing waiting for their delicious pie to be prepared. You can see all the action in the making and this place is run like a well-oiled machine with the pies being made, being tossed into the oven and then being prepared. I decided to order the spicy salami pie and watched the folks at work. The workers are no frills so don't expect amazing hospitality but they are quick to do their job. Each pie (at peak time) seemed to take around 10 minutes or so and these guys were moving as fast as they could. We finally got the pie and then had to head outside to eat (although this might be banned right now in Florence due to too much messiness) on the steps. The pizza dough itself was soft and chewy with charring on the edges. The cheese is flavorful and the ingredients taste solid but my only complaint would be it seemed a bit too oily even for regular standards for other pies eaten during my Italy tour. With this said, it is a good spot to hit up although the lines may overhype this joint a bit up. Definitely worth a visit to try for yourself and use as a comparison to other pies you can eat around Florence as well. The prices also cant be beat! read more

The rumors are true: it's simply fantastic pizza and dirt cheap. I wish they had this place where I went to college. We came here on the enthusiastic recommendation of our (free walking) tour guide. We were somewhat intimidated by their long line. Could this be worth it? Would this line actually move? The answers were hell yes and hell yes. This place is run like a well oiled machine. Pizzas made, pizzas in, pizzas out. The oven is like 900 degrees, and they cook up super fast. So just like your snobby authentic Napolitano pizzerias (some of which - gasp - are stateside, like Del Poppolo in SF) you'll get that magical toasty outside, soft mochi inside kind of crust. We tried a few varieties since they were so cheap and we had a group. Seating was tight for our group with a baby, so we ate on the steps of the church in the adjacent plaza The anchovy pizza was a real challenge even for our exploratory palettes, but we loved all the others. Not sure we'll be back in Florence soon, but if we are, this place will be the first food stop. read more

Who doesn't love fresh piping hot pizza fresh out a wood burning oven? Not gonna lie, I was fairly disappointed with the pizza experience in Rome. The pizza was good but nothing out of the ordinary. Decided to give pizza another go in Florence and saw that this place was highly suggested on Yelp and Trip Advisor. After two failing tries of trying to eat here (restaurants in Italy close between lunch and dinner time), we finally made it one morning. Pizza for breakfast is not my ideal meal but my friend dragged me here and I had no choice since it was our last day in beautiful Florence. You pay at the register and they announce when your pizza is ready. The pizzeria is fairly small but since we came during down time, there was ample seating available. My pizza came loaded with rocket leaves, cherry tomatoes and pecorino cheese and my friend went with her usual pizza margherita. The margherita was a bit on the salty side but still pretty good. I really liked my pizza but regretted the pecorino which was rather sharp for my taste. Overall, a better experience than the one we had in Rome. Still, I'd have to say, when it comes to pizza, America has its game face on. Now I will be looking forward to my trip to Naples (whenever that might be) to do the tasting test. read more

Definitely a must try in Florence! Just note their hours. Wasn't a hard find from our hotel and definitely on the less touristy side of the river (no museum visitor food traffic). At first we were skeptical because there were only other Americans there, but we quickly changed our minds. My husband tried just the plain and I had the white with cheese. Both were great - I preferred the plain. The size was big and I couldn't finish mine - definitely larger than American personal pizza. If you're in for authentic Italian pizza, this is it. The place is small, but what isn't in this town. Clean and very cozy. We caught them right before they were about to close, but they were super nice to us and let us stay. Really really unimpressed with Gusta after getting so many recommendations to eat here from people I know who studied, touristed and lived in Florence. My two main complaints: 1. The pizza just isn't that good. I had way better pizza in Florence (Pizzeria O'Scugnizzo). I ordered the Calabrese (€8). The pizza was watery, soggy, and the sauce was pretty bland. Also, you can see in my picture that some of the cheese is unmelted and was cold. The only tasty thing about it was the spicy salami topping. 2. The workers are not friendly - Now, this is the kicker..... My boyfriend ordered the calzone napoletano (€8) and it was served COLD & UNDERCOOKED. There was visible chunks of uncooked cheese, so of course I said something and asked them to either reheat it or make a new one. The workers looked at me like I had 6 heads - Like how dare an American girl criticize our food. There was no language barrier; the men were just rude. I just repeated myself and pointed at the visible cold chunks of cheese and finally, they reheated it. (I posted pictures that you can see the difference in the way the calzone was cooked uncooked vs. cooked). I don't think the hype matches what is actually served - Unless we had a rare one-off experience. I just highly doubt it, since both of our orders were pretty disappointing. They push people in and out of the doors so quickly and rush out pizzas, which is probably why they are underwhelming and undercooked. read more

Amazing pizza. Found this place after seeing multiple sites address this place as the best pizza joint in Florence. Not sure if it's the best since I haven't tried many locations, but definitely worth the long line for the pizza. Crust was delicious and perfectly cooked. OH EM GEE. If you like pizza, Gusta is a MUST. Maybe it wasn't so crowded [maybe] because it's across the river, but BELIEVE me, it's absolutely amazing. I may kiss my friend for recommending this to us. First of all, if you walk in and find a table, go for it, but it's super easy to take a pizza (and cup of wine) to go. Secondly, we only tried 3 of the pizzas but I am CONVINCED that all (7 total maybe??) are DELICIOUS. Third, it's HOT in there. They have 1 gift-from-the-heavens oven that produced pure gold in edible form. This makes it very hot. Be prepared to take off your jacket cause you'll be sweating when you enter (and drooling).
