We compared Guthrie's vs. Raising Cane's: Guthrie's pros: chicken was great, a little chewy but the seasoning made it a lot better than Raising Cane's chicken fingers which lack much flavor and require salt. Guthrie's cons: the crinkle-cut fries were large and not very crispy. They were soggy, squishy, and a little soft, so that they tasted more like potato strips than fries; the service in the drive thru took about 5-10 mins which wasn't ideal. Overall, Guthrie's had better chicken but otherwise Raising Cane's was probably a better choice (both serve nearly identical menus). read more

The place was dead me and my husband and my two kids went in there. They have a Tweaker lady working there. I don't like how you can't get your own drinks. You have to have somebody get your own drinks. The bread was too salty fries were not even crispy there. Chicken was way way too greasy. I didn't like it. 3.5 stars. Fresh moist hot chicken fingers from the fryer. The place was dead empty on a spring Sunday lunch hour despite the endless stream of cars going by to Costco. Occasionally a car would pull in to the drive thru. They took about 30% off my bill. Don't know why, but very nice - especially as a 2 sauce charge. The tangy tasting bbq sauce worked well with the hot light grease. They even threw in a Tabasco packet and salt/pepper. This is a sparkling new location - and the chicken tenders certainly tasted better than bland Canes. The service was amazing. For a fast food restaurant they are super hospitable. They even deliver the food to our tables and maintain a very clean seating area. The chicken was crispy and made fresh. The parking lot has plenty of spots. Only issue is the Costco traffic on the weekends. Recommend coming on a weekday or later in the evening. We cam on a Saturday during lunch time. Stopped into the new Guthrie's during opening weekend. Great new addition to Carson City. Very similar to Raising Canes. We ordered inside and waited for our food. Wait was not too bad and it was very busy. Two four finger combos and the sandwich combo was about $40. None of those came with slaw which I didn't realize until after I ordered. The toast is way better than Canes. SO much butter! Fries are a little less good, but still great. The tenders are on par with Canes but better seasoned. The sauce is almost exactly the same. Overall, great food and hits the chicken tender craving just right. My only complaint was the unsweet iced tea. Something was very off about it. Very chemical-ish flavor. The inside is nicely decorated and the outside has a decent amount of parking. It is near the Costco and they also plan to add in a car wash, so I can see this area becoming very congested. I believe Guthries is older than Canes so they aren't a Cane's knockoff but they do share the same menu items: Chicken fingers, crinkle fries, coleslaw, and toast. They do offer more sauces than Cane's but their special sauce is similar, maybe a little more sweet than Cane's. We only tried the fingers, none of the sides. They are good but more on the salty side. For comparision's sake I think Cane's tastes fresher with lighter salt so you can taste the chicken more. Cane's batter is lighter too imo. Overall not bad, better than most fast food tenders but comes behind Cane's. read more

In 1965, Hal Guthrie, a proud Auburn (SEC) Alumni, opened the very first Guthrie's as a drive-in restaurant in Haleyville, Alabama. "Warrrrrrr Eagle!" Their chicken fingers specialty began in 1978, and the chain is proud of their sauce. Almost all of Guthrie's restaurants remain located in the Southwest USA, with only the Boise and Carson City locations being geographical outliers. I'm not sure why Guthrie's came out to Carson City, but it's local location is close to both Costco and Bodine's Casino. Maybe it's also my sense that chicken-based fast food restaurants are on the rise beyond Chick Fil A and Raising Cane's, the former located nearby closer to Carson City proper. There's also the new Big Chicken in Minden. As Gayle and I don't dine out a lot, let alone for fast food, we may or may not experience all this fully. My chance came last night as we attended a Reno event, and got on the road home rather than go to some nice bistro like the someplace that the Bellville Wine Bar. Our decision was for her to heat up leftovers and for me to try this Guthrie's (drive-through). BOTTOM LINE: - I'll be back to take deeper dive. - Nice new clean building, double drive through and as far as I could see a nice fast food interior. - The chicken finger sandwich (including sauce) was very good. I enjoyed the fries as well, even though they cooled down a bit during the drive. - Drive through time was way too long, and probably exceeded an In-N-Out wait, except in this case there was no line. We were the only car in the drive thru but there was a bit of a wait. The tenders were incredibly dry, overcooked, and borderline burnt. The fries are meh, no seasoning (maybe even no salt??). We decided to try this new chicken tenders place next to Costco. We were on our way to The Max Casino for some Karaoke. We went through the drive thru to take it to go. The person on the other side of the mic was very friendly. We took a little bit deciding what to try so we ended up doing 2 Chicken Sandwiches, 1 on a bun, the other on their Texas toast. We also ordered there 12 piece chicken tenders which comes with 3 dips and 2 sides of fries. Total prices came to $43. We had left over tenders so for $43 it works have fed 5 people. The chicken was very moist and had a great flavor. My husband and daughter both said their chicken sandwich was so good. I tried both and I loved it on the Texas Toast. The fries were plentiful. A Canes's competitor? I had to go and see. I'm a huge fan of crispy little tantalizing tenderloins of chicken goodness, however, this place didn't fully cut it for me. The drive through was very easy, the staff was friendly, and the menu looked very familiar as if it directly ripped a page out of Canes playbook. The fries were not bad. Thicker crinkle cut style almost as if a crinkle cut fry had a kid with a traditional steak fry. The chicken fingers looked delicious, but were a bit saltier and a little more seasoned than Canes. Not Cajun, but a more hint of a kick. Not a deal breaker, but not my favorite. The dipping sauce, almost identical. The Texas toast was half the size of what you'd normally expect in terms of thickness and they used a garlic butter. It's not bad if you're into garlic. I liked it. If you like Canes, this place is worth a try so you know you that you have options, however, after my experience, I'm likely going to stick with Canes as my go-to quick stop for chicken fingers, but I had to try it. I made a damn Yelp for this place. Unironically this place is wildly good. I drive past it all the time and seldom see people, and decided to give it a go. Chicken cooked so perfectly it melts in your mouth and fries cooked just right. The sauce to boot is also good. The ambiance in the place is pretty casual, nothing crazy. Like a nicer quality fast food place. I'd highly recommend giving it a go, seriously for the price it's worth an experience, and if you had a good time like I did - then go back and enjoy some more. $24 for 2 of the cheapest meals they have, the 3 finger combo and the sandwich. Both were pretty terrible, the tenders are the saddest things I've ever seen. The lettuce on the sandwhich was brown and very soggy, the chicken its self was soggy, and the bread was the soggiest. The fries also had 0 taste to them, pretty disappointing.
