Salmon tacos
Wanda M.

Stopped by again for salmon tacos and a hibiscustini! Great service and food (the salmon in the tacos was abundant and tasty) Black beans were flavorful. It's an automatic stop when passing through Carson.

We ordered food to go because we wanted to go have a beer at Shoe Tree Brewing. It took a bit to get an order in, but we worked with Collin's and he was super helpful! In fact, I was expecting a call to go get my food from Shoe Tree but he was kind enough to deliver it! Was a nice guy! Thank you, Collin's. The food was pretty good! Shrimp tacos hit the spot and we ordered deep fried cheesy grits, which were so good! I would order those again if I went to Shoe Tree, but I do want to try other food.

March 20 Update: We had another amazingly delicious Friday night dinner at Sassafras. This time with a larger group. Kevin provided exemplary (super friendly & helpful) service, and everyone enjoyed their selections. We'll be back soon. This past Friday, my partner and I had another amazingly-delicious early-dinner at Sassafras. We love Sassafras! The restaurant is super cute with it's Sassy Creole/Cajun decorations, service is super friendly (Thank You Michelle S.!), menu choices are plentiful (with many veg and GF offerings), and the food is fresh, delicious and beautiful. Friday, we stuck with the Okonomiyaki's (1 with grilled chicken and 1meatless) and a bottle of the Backhouse Pinot Noir. We'll be back soon!

The tacos were amazing!

The service is top notch! The host was so engaging and welcoming. Kevin was funny and super helpful when helping us decide what to get. He really knew the menu. The food is awesome! This place is the perfect example of eclectic

Nachos (no peppers, no onions)

Today this was a quick stop between appointments for me and my dad. The restaurant had soft music playing and the noise from the other tables was low. Our server was friendly and helpful with my allergies and our time restrictions. My dad and I settled on ordering the nachos with chicken and no peppers or onions (I'm allergic). The nachos came out quickly, hot, and plentiful. The beans and the chicken on the nachos were seasoned beautifully. My dad said the salsas served with the nachos were a very spicy and caution them to be used in moderation. Sassafras is always delicious and welcoming. I can't wait for my next meal at Sassafras.

Blacken salmon and strawberry salad.

Back here again after soaking at the hot springs. Another great meal!! Always great service. I had blacked salmon with the strawberry salad. The salad was so nice and light. The salmon had perfect seasoning and cooked perfectly. My husband had salmon tacos with rice and beans. Idk what's in that rice but it's the best rice I've ever had and I've had a lot of rice.

This was my very first time at Sassafras. Just don't go to Carson City that often. You'd think it was really far away ... it's not! Anway, Nancy V and I went for our monthly luncheon. She's been there before. Very impressed with the food. I had a Lamb Burger on which they added this tzatiki style slaw which made the burger even more special. Then it came with a side and I order the Thai slaw (I like cabbage). I also enjoyed Lavender Lemonade. But it was way too much to eat, so I'll have the slaw today for lunch at home. Nancy loved her Sand Dab Fishwich with which she ordered their homemade French Fries. And yes you can really tell a frozen potato from fresh. They were wonderful. But again, too much to eat. Their serving sizes are generous. Easy to share a lunch. On our next visit we plan to share an appetizer and a salad. I say next, because there is so much on this eclectic menu that I want to try. They do have a full bar. Use your GPS to find this location. It's kinda of in a Business area, near the local Pool. But it's worth looking for.

Eviled Eggs

Lately we have been timing our travels through Carson City so that we can have dinner at Sassafras. What an AMAZING restaurant. The variety of entrees, beers and ciders on tap etc... is great. There is so much on the menu that I actually want to try. This last trip we decided on two of the specials. One was a bone in pork chop with an apple and blue cheese compote served with a fancy potatoes au gratin. The other was a New York steak served over French fries with a blue cheese fondue. Both were delicious! For a starter we always choose the eviled eggs. We were too full this last time to have dessert. On a previous trip I had an ahi sandwich which I ordered with the home made potato chips. They were great. You owe it to yourself to try this place out.

Bologna burger

Looking for somewhere new to try in Carson city. Reviews looked good. Let's try. Nestled in the Carson foothills next to the hot springs, an eclectic restaurant . This place reminds me of a German/ Bavarian place. Heavy woods, dark drapes and a diverse amount of decoration. The menu is vast. In addition several specials were offered. Our waitress Michelle, was well versed in each offering. We chose the bologna burger. A huge chub of bologna served on a bun. Also the polenta with low country gravy. The servings were huge and delicious. This place is a must try.

Asian vegi bowl.

This isca solid 4. The atmosphere is eclectic and toned down. Our server Erin was pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu. I had the Asian Vegi Bowl with brown rice and was a solid, until I added the sriracha. That took it to a 5 and I polished it off. My wife had the Thi Chicken Salad that was to spicie for her. With that said she/we can't wait to go back.

Dropped in on a Saturday night and was sat quickly. They offer a wide variety of options, great place for groups. I opted for the burger with a side of fries. Burger was HUGE, ranch was killer! Large parking lot.

The recommended chicken tacos! It was well worth the choice! Absolutely delicious!

I have already done two different reviews on this establishment. But we recently visited again last weekend and felt I needed to update it because Sassafras is just such an amazing place to eat. Not only is it vibrant when you walk in. But the staff is so friendly and accommodating, and the waitress that we always seem to have always remembers what we like. She always remembers that I'm trying to work my way through the menu LOL, and often suggests things to try. Well, this particular visit she suggested I try something that one of the cooks had come up with. They were chicken tacos. I cannot honestly remember what flavors were in them, but it was kind of like a fusion type meal. It wasn't a traditional Mexican style taco, but it was chicken with Mexican style cheese and if you look at the picture that I post you can see it was so well put together. It was served with black beans and rice. It was absolutely an amazing meal and I highly suggest. You try it when you go in there. Sassafras has such a great vibe that I can't recommend it high enough for people to go visit. My wife and I have become regulars and plan to keep coming here as long as they keep serving up great food in this great service cause I can't speak enough about it . Kudos Sassafras and the staff for creating such a great environment for people to enjoy! Cheers!

Fish and chips
Jim W.

Leaned on Yelp for a lunch recommendation and Sassafras popped to the top. Funky decor plus a nice looking menu. We chose Evil eggs for an app. Deviled eggs plus jicama and shrimp topping. Then a salad that was large and fresh. Then perfectly savory black bean soup. Then fish and chips. We just couldn't stop ordering. Our server just laughed. She checked back just when we needed something. We really enjoyed each item except the fish and chips. Very small pieces of fish and too much batter. It was crispy and flavorful but the fish was in short supply for my taste. The blue cheese coleslaw is genius. So incredibly delicious I want more. We will definitely visit Sassafras next time we visit Carson City. There are many great options on the menu that we want to try. Give them a taste as soon as possible.

Cheese curd burger (not my best photo, but I was ready to eat!)

Is this place good for kids?

My kids are older but I would absolutely take my kids there if they were younger. The atmosphere is fun and employees are super friendly.

Do you have a veterinarian menu / offerings? I want to take my veterinarian friend here and don't want his only option to be getting a salad.…

We offer many options for veterinarians, vegetarians and vegans. We love animals too!

Today we got the following: Special - Pulled pork on a pretzel bun with fries. Two orders. Wow, it exceeded my expectations. Well, I honestly did not have high expectations. The pork was tender and flavorful; I did not even need the extra BBQ sauce that I asked for but used it to not waste it. And with a generous amount of fries; my buddy did not finish his fries. I also like the nice touch of a fried pickle on top of the slider. Fish and Chips - My other buddy that was craving BBQ switched to this and loved it. Chicken Breast Sandwich - My healthy buddy. He was also not able to finish his fries. All of which was good. And I plan to come back for Happy hour in the future. Especially Wing Wednesdays! Ambiance - Larger than expected. Larger than it looked from the outside. This place is like two units. I hope my pictures did it justice. Full bar, plenty of tables in both rooms. Pool tables, darts, etc. Semi open kitchen. Plenty of street parking. Open 6 days a week; closed Mondays. Service - Colgan (name on receipt) was so professional! Checked up on us very often. Even better, he was proactive and asked us if we wanted this or that with our orders. Price - $57 + generous tip. FYI - 4% credit card charge or 4% cash discount, see picture. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 2014. We have actually been hanging out in this area for the last few years and now will be more frequent customers.

Today being Father's Day, we were out and about in town and decided we would eat there. All the way there I kept bragging to my grandson how great this place is and it's our go to spot. yada yada yada. It wasn't very busy and we were seated very quickly. The service has always been pretty friendly. The service today was adequate and I'll get to that in a second. My grandson ordered the pork belly, Mac and cheese. I kept saying how that is a really good choice and he's really going to like it. My wife ordered the half rack ribs with fries and coleslaw. I had what I think is called the butchers platter with ribs, chicken wings, and pork belly. The food arrived and looked pretty darn good. But that's where it ends. My wife kept saying how salty the food was. And I got to thinking about that as I was eating my wings with the so-called Memphis dust flavoring on them. Those were equally salty so I thought wow OK maybe it's just our taste buds. Then I tried my ribs and they were also salty. I tried my wife's ribs just to see if they were that salty and come to find out they really were and dry. The fries that came with my wife's food tasted like they were old like they've been sitting out for a while. The coleslaw was also bland. After bragging about the pork belly and cheese, my grandson stated that it was pretty bland with very little flavor. So I tried it just to see what was going on and sure enough it was really lacking something what I don't know. I'm thinking garlic because it was pretty darn bland. I honestly hate to give a review like this because I really like this place as I said before it's been our go to spot. Now, as far as the service the server, she was very friendly, but that was pretty much it, after getting our food she didn't even check on us until it was about time for us to leave and she brought us our check. It's just kind of weird because there's a couple of servers here that are exceptional. So I don't know what's going on, but this was a very big letdown for a couple of regular customers. As usual, the place is clean and spacious with plenty of TVs to enjoy sports. In the end, the beverages were about the best part of the meal. It was Father's Day, so my beer was free so thank you for that maybe this was just a rough day. I don't know. I don't know if you have new cooks or what but this was pretty bad considering how much we like this place and how good it has always been.

However, service has been a challenge during each visit. On our most recent visit, it took about 20 minutes to be seated with a party of four, including a child, even though there appeared to be open tables. After sitting down, it took several minutes before we were greeted. Our server brought waters and later took drink orders, but there wasn't much communication about timing or whether they were short staffed. Once we placed our order, we waited close to an hour for our food. We completely understand that restaurants can get busy and staffing can be tight -- we just would have appreciated a quick update along the way. A little communication goes a long way and helps set expectations. When our food arrived, part of the order was incorrect (we had requested a salad and soup substitution but only received fries). The server corrected it, and the food itself was good. It did come out at different times, and we noticed another table seated after us received their food much sooner, which was a bit confusing. We truly want to support Roy's and hope this feedback is helpful. With stronger communication and smoother service flow, it could be a great experience.
