Had to eat at Guzman y Gomez at least once while in Australia. We have enjoyed it in the past years and still do. We have eaten at Guzman y Gomez in at least six cities and they are all very good. Am sad that we were so hungry that we forgot to take a picture. But it was a simple meal of three Hard Shell Minced Spicy Beef tacos. There were very good. Not the best in the world but better than Taco Bell. The place was packed. And it took longer than average. Think they forgot to call our number. Had to go ask if our food ready. It was! Will definitely return on our next trip to Australia. Recommend for a quick inexpensive lunch. read more

Coming from the United States I'm used to all the fast casual burrito restaurants. This location doesn't disappoint and ranks right up there with the best fast casual burrito chains in the United States. The tortilla is great, the rice was cooked perfectly, and the chicken is good. The stars of the burrito were the cheese and the homemade salsa. The salsa has a very different flavor than salsa used in the United States but it has a good flavor. I absolutely loved the flavor of the cheese. At some burrito chains you can't taste the cheese and it gets lost in the rice but not in this burrito. I also tried the pulled pork burrito and it was great too! The size and filling of the burrito is generous and well worth the money. The service is fast and extremely friendly. A cheap spot for decent pseudo-Mexican eats. The best description I can give is that it's what Baja Fresh in the States *should* taste like. Every time I've gone to eat here the food has been delicious and more recently I ordered Uber eats given the current circumstances of the world and they gave me amazing food as well as a cute note on the bag. During a long night of work, I ordered a [delivery] burrito bowl, which came with pico de gallo. I'm allergic to tomatoes, so in the section where you can take things off, I unchecked the 'pico de gallo' box. In the notes section, I put in all caps, ALLERGIC TO TOMATOES - NO TOMATO, NO PICO DE GALLO When the food arrived, my bowl had a sticker on it saying 'no pico,' but when I opened it, it was *covered* in pico. Completely inedible. I called, and the person who answered insisted they had not put pico on my bowl. I was looking at a giant pile of chopped death-fruit on my food, so I told her she was mistaken, and asked for a replacement burrito bowl. She told me they absolutely would not fix the order, but they could give me a complimentary burrito next time I physically visited their location. I was thus stuck at work in 5 degree weather with no food, and had to order (and pay for, and wait 45 minutes for) food from elsewhere. We had the pleasure of chatting with Steven Marks, GYG owner and fellow American, at the GYG High Point opening, and he is, if nothing else, a passionate person who genuinely wanted to fill the void of affordable, accessible Mexican-style street food in Australia. Given the standard of fast food Mexican around (Mad Mex, Salsa's, I'm pointing a very ugly finger at you), I'd say Steven is fulfilling his hopes. The GYG model is based off the US's Chipotle, and they do it well with a bit of local color thrown in, including items like barramundi and frozen margaritas on the menu. The flavors are fresher, the toppings more authentic -- guacamole, fresh chopped tomato salsa and a dash of cheese reign supreme to the gallons of sour cream and cheese at other places -- and the grilled chicken, barramundi and steak are lean and well seasoned. It IS fast food, basically, and isn't a substitute for the many proper Mexican restaurants in Melbourne. But for a quick taste of Mex street food on the go, this is the place to be. read more

I love everything here. Everything. The burrito (any flavour) is hard to go past. Add beans and rice and you could feed a small nation for a week. Filling, fresh and delicious. I quite like the nachos on the odd occasion I stray from the land of the burrito with the tacos close behind. Can be messy to eat but surely that's all part of the fun. Love that you can raid the condiments for as much or as little as you like and that they have beer and frozen margaritas available. Food was fast, cheap, and oh so delicious! I ordered the Spicy Chicken Guerrero Mini Burrito. The tortilla was soft and the filling of chicken, beans, cheese and salsa was substantial. The chicken wasn't spicy but not to worry there are a heap of self-serve condiments and four different Tabasco sauces on hand. Like many Melbournians, I'm not a fan of Sydney. It's just too messy and looming, and the public transport system isn't that great either. But for the past few years there has been at least one thing for me to look forward to any time I visited, and it wasn't my best friend who lives there. No, it was Guzman Y Gomez in Newtown. I would make any excuse to stop by there at least once - if not twice - to get a taco and guac fix. This Guzman offers a large space - I could imagine it filled with drunken revellers in search of a late night snack, although it was fairly empty when I went there in the mid-afternoon (admittedly outside the regular lunching hours). There was a staff member outside handing out menus and trying to generate business. As I sat there, enjoying the tasty, simple fish tacos that I had squirted with two of the selection of hot sauces available, I wondered what on earth was wrong with the people who showed no interest. The only acceptable excuse is having already eaten. Together with Mad Mex, Guzman heralds a more democratic era in the Mexican craze that has been sweeping Melbourne for the past eighteen months or so. While Mamasita and Radio Mexico are still my top Mexican picks for a proper dinner out, it's great to know I can now get a high quality taco fix on the run from these places. read more

I knew our first visit to Guzman was off to a good start when I entered the establishment and was given a warm "hey guys, how're ya doin?" by a jolly, smiling server. North American style tacos AND service? Well, yes please. We ordered the chipotle steak and chicken tacos which came loaded with fresh, zingy pico de gallo, and then and headed over to partake in the bountiful offerings of the self service table: Hot sauces, chopped red onion, and coriander....I do declare, this was looking more and more like a proper American style (chain) taqueria. I asked for a glass of tap water and was met by a chagrined waiter who apologized for the temperature of the free drink: "I put ice in it but it still might be a bit cold. So sorry!" There was the lovely, friendly service again. I felt like I'd been beamed straight to Cali by some kind of awesome transporting device. Tacos were solid: The meat was good, spices were spot on, and the tortillas were fresh as all get out. If the burritos are as good I'll be upgrading this joint to five stars. read more

I came here briefly the other day, with the idea of making this among one one of my regular eating habits. I think I shall succeed in this measure. Mainly for the fact that I didn't want anything too fancy but still wanted good food, so just dropped in quickly for some street style eats. Fresh, lots of flavour, miles removed from some of the staid dull stuff that you can find around. Clean bright, flavoursome worth the effort of going. I had the spicy quesadilla; very nice and picante indeed. One of the better "Grab a quick bite" options, hope is stays around and more of them open. Next thing to try would be the burritos or the bowls, or the nachos, and then some snacks, and oh, probs gonna want to come here with friends too. I think that this is the best fast Mexican food in Melbourne, hands down. I actually discovered it by accident, assuming it was yet another Mad Mex type affair, and I'm glad I was wrong. The only criticism I have is that I wish there were a few more around dotted around - there aren't nearly enough of them! The thing about Mexican food is that it's usually accompanied by an overwhelming need to take a nap afterwords. That isn't the case with Guzman Y Gomez - the food is fresh, and actually much lighter/ healthier than a lot of the alternatives. It's all simple, quick and tasty. I usually order a burrito - they have large and small sizes, which I appreciate. The small burrito goes down quickly and is a great quick lunch! The soft tacos are actually pretty good as well. Actually, I think that you'll be happy with anything your order. I've also noticed that the prices are very reasonable for what you're getting, and the portions are pretty great as well. I think that my favourite part is the salsa bar. Chopped coriander, onions, jalepenos, and a selection of fresh and hot salsas. If you're there on a weekday you can get a bottle of water/ a soft drink at lunch time with your meal for only a dollar, which is a pretty cool bonus on top of the great food! read more

We've been here a few times now and have never been disappointed. Its quick and easy and relatively cheap. You can get beers and tequila as well which is great to round out the meal with. Melbourne and it's quixotic dream of perfect Mexican food. Plus this place is on Swanston Street. Right near Melbourne Central. It's pretty cheap and packed full of students. It could not possibly be authentic. It's from Sydney for god's sake. Not even possibly. You'll comment on the authenticity of the menu, the decor, the other diners. Indeed, on yourselves. Despite your partner agreeing with you it'll feel like you're arguing. You'll be discussing a Mexican food van that you went to in LA. Only the locals knew about it. How that was authentic. You'll then realise that without even thinking, you've ordered and inhaled a burrito. Perhaps mid sentence you'll look down at the now-empty foil wrapper on the table. Inhaled. Inhaled because it is fresh and delicious. Then you'll look at your partner, nod silently and go back to order another. You'll eat it in contented silence. This place is great. It's delicious and reasonably priced. You can order the Mini-Burrito and you have a pretty healthy dinner for half the cost of cooking at home. Dangerous if you're a city dweller. When it comes to Mexican Fast Food, you can't really go wrong with Guzman Y Gomez. I first tried it in Brissie during a long weekend of partying (how fitting..!) and loved it. I couldn't get enough of it. I've tried Salsa's and, while it's pretty good too, I still prefer Guzman Y Gomez, it has more options, is quite cheap and the food's nice. This place was just disappointing. The burrito was big but just could've been cheaper priced at $12. So many alternatives and the flavour just lacked. Love it- this is not the manicured chef table Mexican place, but the working mans grab and go, more energy than you need, all the filling, quick and easy. The Swanson Street location, since it is located in what was formerly Asian grocery is the largest GyG I have seen that is constrained by walls. Not only do they have windows that open toward Swanson Street so you can people watch (people almost as interesting as those that you would find in Kings Cross) but there is air conditioning. Not being forced into a food court is novel, not being relegated to communal tables is welcome and on a warm Melbourne day, it was certainly nice to be greeted by air conditioning first and then by a smile at the counter second. There was no queue when I visited and all of the tables were clean. One of the team members was at the door offering passers-by samples of chips and guacamole and after I ordered my burrito and tacos it was quickly delivered whilst I caught up on my Twitter feed. As soon as your food has been exhausted other team members will happily remove your rubbish and clean your table. It is the cleanest GyG that I have seen. Most however are in and around food courts, so it was refreshing to have inexpensive food that didn't appear "cheap" and yet another location that is adhering to the consistent GyG formula. All I know is that my Gomex GyG frequent diner card is going to get a workout and I am still dirty that they opened two locations in the Brisbane CBD almost immediately after I moved. Perhaps they didn't forecast the demand would decrease without me in the capital of Queensland. So hundreds of burritos and tacos later, I can say that I am a fan, if not addicted.
