I really loved the owners at this winery, pleasant and friendly. The patio is the place to be. The views are great. It was so hot they turned on patio misters. If you buy a bottle of wine, they will waive the tasting fee. Do have their bubblies! Dog friendly-ish: They have working dogs on site and love to play fetch with customers. I was able to bring my small dog, but only by checking in with the owners first. They must be friendly with their dogs. If your dog is not friendly, leave them at home. read more

We've been wine members here for 3 years now and hands down this is one of our favorite wineries. This is a small family owned winery with a cave to taste in. The cave is the best way to beat the heat in the summer months. From the first time coming to now, I've felt like family. Cris and Gordon make sure to remember our names and fun things about us. Truly speaks to their love and character. The wine is Ahhhmazing. So delicious and bold. We love the bubbles too! I highly recommend coming here for an afternoon. Great port find. Friends are wine club members here and recently invited me to join them at a tasting and pick up on Nevada Day weekend. Glad they did, I'm not sure I would have ever discovered this spot. This small family owned winery is off the beaten path in the FairPlay area. Prior to covid, tastings were done in the cave. Now they have built a large covered patio for outdoor tasting. The patio has a fantastic view overlooking the acres of orange and red grape vines. The husband and wife owners walked us through the three different tasting menus, then poured each glass. I went with the all red menu, mainly for the final selection of their port. It consisted of a 2015 Tuelu, 2014 Zinfandel, 2014 Winemaker's Selection that was a GSM blend, 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2015 Petite Sirah and 2014 Zinfandel Port. Of all the ports I had been sampling over the three day weekend, this was the absolute best. It had that warm caramel essence without being sweet. It's going to be the perfect winter evening night cap. The access to the tasting cave is a narrow gravel road. Plenty of parking available in a gravel lot. read more

I cannot say enough about Gwinllan's wine, the winery (on a hill overlooking the vineyards and countryside), the Cave tasting room, the Bistro, and the FAMILY who owns and runs it. First, the wine is exceptional. The California champagnes and rose are delightful. The reds are exquisite. Gwinllan Estate is in the sleepy countryside of Fairplay, CA. There you will find many wineries, some great, some not so good. A discerning palette tells all. Jonathan Pack is the vintner. He also makes wines for MV, Sentivo, Del Oro, and now Perry Creek. If you are looking for amazing wines and delicious homemade food, and a lovely atmosphere, take the short drive to Gwinllan Estates winery and bistro. Fantastic sparkling wine and reds in a beautiful location. The entrance is not much to speak of, but driving up the gravel driveway the views speak for themselves. Wine tasting is in a cave built into the side of a hill and on a big covered patio overlooking the rolling hills and vineyards. This is the only winery in the region making sparkling wine on site and it is fantastic. Their other wines are very good too. The owners are very nice and friendly. The winery dogs are super cute too! read more

Gwinllan Estate is ranks amongst my favorite wineries in the FairPlay and Amador area. Firstly the owners Gordon and Chris are very warm and friendly. The winery is on a hill with lovely views of the vineyard. The are tables to sit at for the tasting and you are welcome to bring your own snacks. I've brought my dog a few times too. There are two winery dogs who hang around, adding to the warmth of the winery. The wine is excellent and well priced, particularly for the quality. My favorites are the Winemakers Selection and Petite Syrah. read more

We read about this winery in The Financial Times review and decided to make the trek from Los Angeles to check it (and other neighboring wineries) out. Needless to say, we loved it! The owners, Gordon and Chris, were the most gracious hosts and the wines they served were delicious. We especially loved the Zinfandel Port, but there were several other wines that were exceptional. The winery and tasting room are unique and picturesque and the member who come there to hang out, catch up and chat, are all very lovely. Gwinllan is one of my favorite places to go wine tasting in the Fairplay area. If you have the opportunity to attend one of their events, do it! The crowds are fun, the wine is great, and the food they make is delicious! The owners are so friendly and make you feel welcome right away, and their wine maker Jonathon is very knowledgeable and friendly as well. I love that the tasting room has a different atmosphere to it. It's fun being in a "cave" with a bunch of wine barrels. The view from the patio is especially beautiful in the fall! read more

What a great visit at Gwinllan Estate! Tasting in the wine caves was such a fun experience, not to mention a great way to beat the heat! The wines we tasted were so unlike anything else we tasted while visiting Fair Play - that being said, we left with multiple bottles to take home (shoutout to the phantom rosé). We felt right at home during our tasting and were offered many pairing suggestions throughout the tasting as well. Great wines and great views! At Gwinllan you can expect a $5 tasting fee but that will be waved with any wine purchase. They have a large selection of wines to taste so the $5 tasting fee is worth it! The view is awesome and the staff are some of the friendliest you can find in Fairplay. They have a couple dogs that wander this tasting room so don't bring your own. The dog is very friendly with other people but does not seem to be as friendly with other dogs. I have never enjoyed wines like I lhave at Gwinllan Estate's wines and all Jonathan Pack's wine (he makes wines for 6 other local wineries - all exceptional). White, red, sparkling or port... they are all excellent. And what is even MORE amazing, is that you can go down the road to another winery (other than Gwinllan) to other wineries where Jonathan creates wines and consults, and the wines are still excellent even though they are unique one from another. Why? Because the soil is different. The slant of the vineyard is different. The sun hits the grapes differently. I have to say, the wines are some of the very best I've ever tasted. Gwinllan is by far one of our favorite wineries in the area. We frequent the Plymouth/Fair Play area and fell in love with Gordan and Chris early on. Their wines and champagne stand high amongst the ranks and bless us consistently in our home. The wines are beautiful and so is the location. Their covered patio has the most amazing views. There is a negative review about dogs below - we have had the exact OPPOSITE experience. We always bring our big dog with us. There is a sign that just asks you to let them know you have a dog before you allow it to come out of the car - seems absolutely reasonable. They make sure to make adjustments and make sure everyone is safe. Our dogs got along beautifully. If you are looking for great wines, amazing owners/wine makers, beautiful views and and all around great experience then Gwinllan is your ticket. read more

Apparently this winery is known for their red wines - Zinfandel and Syrah. But we will never know since we never made it in. Within minutes of walking into the cellar their dog (aggressive collie) attacked and almost seriously maimed my mothers dog. If Yelp didn't hide a review of another reviewer who this happened to a year before we could have avoided the saga. Be warned. We did our research and talked with other wineries (we come up 4x/year) and learned this collie attacked at least 4 other dogs. Their carelessness is affecting local wineries and their dog friendly policy. There are other great wineries for reds - Toogood has several great Zinfandels and Shadow Ranch for their Sheriff. If you're an animal lover or just have principals please don't peruse this place. read more

We have been members of their wine club since their first year, and it's amazing to sew their wines evolve over the years. Gordon and Chris are wonderful owners, and Jonathan is an exceptional winemaker - if you've had a good fair play wine, there's a very good chance it was one of his. For the people complaining about their dog, they really should read the signs in the parking lot and on the patio asking you not to bring your dog in without asking first. They've been there at least since we joined 4 years ago, and are the reason we've not brought our dogs (but then again we don't feel that we're so special and self-important that we should be able to do whatever we want on someone else's property). Gwinllan Estate Winery Fairplay Ca This was our first time visiting Gwinllan Estate Winery in Fairplay Ca. I had heard some wonderful things about this small production winery. The small tasting room at the top of a moderate sloping hill does slightly resemble a storm bunker. Once inside it does have a more cozy ambience. The setting is inside the cave with barrels in small casks and drop down lighting features a few small tables for snacking and wine tasting. A Little surprised that the Wine Maker is also the owner. Gordon and his staff all wear many hats as the saying goes. I was not aware that the Welsh produced much wine, well lucky for us they do.. The fine wines offered here are top notch efforts and do deserve your full attention. The craftsmanship of each vintage is evident in the wine that is served. I believe that the overall quality of the entire wine selection is one of the best in the area. Gwinllan Estate may not offer as many varietals as some of the other local wineries, however they do offer some of the best wine produced in the area. The Petite Sirah is 4 star with smoky fruit, hints of chocolate and full bodied. The Zinfandel is 4 star with strong tangy fruits with hints of spice. Wine Makers Selection Blend is a succulent blend that is juicy, seasoned with pepper, and hints of caramel to finish. I taste a lot of places and this was one of the best. The tasting is done in the wine cave with great ambiance. There is an outdoor patio with a fantastic local foothill view and tables to sit at to enjoy it. We tasted with the winemaker and his brother and what a special treat. The wines are fantastic, among the best in Fairplay. I would recommend it to anybody. There is a winery dog - Sierra, a 1 year old Golden. She is sweet and affectionate and adds to the experience. I have been to this winery twice and each time I had a lovely experience. I LOVE that I am able to bring my dog (a pitbull) and I have never had a problem. I am a white wine drinker and I am a fan of their Chardonnay and champagne (sparkling wine). I enjoy trying the wine in tasting room (it is nice and cool) but you are able to taste outside. I would just advise that you ask the owners if you can bring your dog BEFORE you go inside. There is also a sign on the outside that requests this. read more
