Um... "ew" best sums up my feelings. I had the same Cuban sub as reviewed below, and I was considerably less impressed. First off, I was expecting something grilled, or at least with toasted bread; this was neither. The bread was *slathered* in mayo, so much so that the innards of the sandwich slid right out of the bread as soon as I picked it up. If there were less than 1/2 cup of mayo on that entire sandwich, I'd be shocked. The rest of the mayo-wich consisted of cold Swiss cheese, cold ham, maybe 3-4 pickle slices, and pulled pork. The pork itself wasn't bad, but it was so liquidy that it made the bread disintegrate. I ate half the thing with a fork (trying to avoid the clumps of mayo) before giving up, only because I didn't have time to take it back to the Gypsy truck for a refund. I get that it's a "Cuban-style" sub, so I'm not annoyed at the lack of authenticity of a real pressed Cuban sandwich. It was just objectively bad. Why 2 stars? I'm feeling generous, I guess, or maybe because the lady at the truck was so sweet. Or maybe because it was a flat $6, which is cheaper than most truck meals. Seriously, though, it was the worst food truck I've tried yet in Indy, and I've tried damn near all of them. I can't believe I haven't reviewed Gypsy Café yet... I feel like I should be punished! This is one of my favorites in Indy: the prices are reasonable, the portions are HUGE, and everything I've had has been, well, pretty darn good. Let's start with the redneck nachos. I made the mistake of trying to eat these in my car. It did not go well. Main ingredients: cheese, marinated pork, nachos (in that order). Can you really go wrong with these three things as your starting point? I certainly think not! Let's use this moment to talk about the pork used on the nachos. It's the same pork they use in the Cuban style sub and it's outstanding. I could eat a sandwich of just the pork (and can't remember if they have a pork sandwich on the menu or not). Even better, if they threw some of the pork in a tortilla and served them that way. My mouth is beginning to water now... Cuban style subs are pretty good to. They're "Hoosier-fied" Cuban subs, meaning the sandwich isn't pressed on a grill so the sub is pretty big, and it a lot of bread. Honestly, I find this much more fitting as a meal for two than one, but I'd rather walk away feeling like I got more for my money than not enough. If you're lucky enough to spot rum cake on the menu and they haven't sold out, make sure you try it. Takes me back to the Caribbean every time I take a bite. Finally, let's talk about the crew running this place. I consider myself fortunate to know Bob and his family, including Bob's history working in the food business. Pretty good "Cuban." I have to qualify it with quotes, because normally Cuban's are grilled and do not have mayo. This sandwich is served cold with mayo. Still, It's pretty darned good. Would be amazing if grilled. Tender pulled pork, sliced ham, pickles, Swiss cheese, and mayo. Not sure if it was on Gonnola bread, but the bread was tender and delicious. Next time I want to try the chili dog with a Nathan's hot dog, or the nachos. The chili looked fantastic. read more

Meh! I love the food truck culture and the ability to try different foods straight from the cooks that make them. My issue here is that (Gypsy Cafe included) most of the food trucks that hit the west side as of lately have the same vibe. Some sort of pulled "BBQ" pork on top of fries or nachos or something to that effect. I am not really sensing alot of thought or variety to the food. Tried the Cuban, didnt finish it (not typical in my world, so take that as you will). If there are a variety of food trucks, move on to the next one. read more

I love their Redneck Nachos. $7 with pork, which is nice and juicy and not dried out, a common theme with pork. I went to the ATM last Friday just so I could get cash to get Redneck Nachos - this may make me look like I have no life, but I don't care because I had some delicious Nachos! They gave me a free brownie since I went to the ATM and it was great too. Very moist. Their Nachos are large portions so prepare yourself. They came here today for a Riley Hospital food truck meet. It was super cold today but nothing could keep me away from food truck food. I had the smoked chicken tacos. For $5 you get two tacos. These tacos were huge! I was only able to finish one. I really like the sauce they used on the taco. A cheesy chipotle sauce. I only wish it was more spicy and had more pico de gallo. It seemed like that was missing. But it was still good. I added my own Siracha sauce to bring out the spiciness. My co worker had the pull pork she said it was good! But eating that you might want to think about hitting the gym. Overall will want to eat from here again, and the wait didn't seem that long. read more

Tried them out at the Riley food truck day for lunch. Proudly claimed to have better food than taco bell. Not much to aspire to and should have been my first sign of what was to come. I ordered a chicken burrito that is allegedly made with smoked chicken. Unfortunately, this did not seem to be the case. What I got was something with the soggy consistency of canned meat with zero smoke flavor and little sign of any of the advertised adobo sauce. Pico de gallo consisted of giant chunks of tomato and little else. Probably should have made the trek back from my office to return it instead of choking it down. Portion size being good and money going to Riley are about the only positives. Final score: Taco bell 1, Gypsy Cafe 0. read more

Pretty much the same experience as Parvonay D. The sandwich was barely edible with all the mayo. Strange motto "if youre smelling it, were selling it"? Friends and I ripped and laughed on that and not in a way the owner would appreciate. read more
