Der Pretzel Wagen is one of the first food trucks in Indy - they've been around for four years so I'm ashamed to say it has taken me this long to finally make a pretzel purchase. I'm trying to cut back on my meat intake and decided to go with the inverted pretzel (pretzel bun grilled cheese). It's as if this sandwich were made to be consumed with beer. It was the perfect pairing for my evening at Indiana On Tap's Tasting Society. Cherry on top? It was super affordable. Next time, I'm going big with the Chuebakka. OK - so maybe this review is a little bit affected by the fact that I had just finished running the Monumental Half and had pretzel on my mind for the last 3 miles or so! I have had the Skywalker, the Greedo, and the Chuebakka. I will have them all soon. You know a place makes excellent sandwiches when you drive 15-20 minutes out of your way to have one. I am excited to try the Das Fritz and Ham Solo next! The pretzel bun is what makes the sandwich. Never hard, but not too chewy either. (no pun intended) Served warm, it accents the meat and other toppings amazingly well. The portion is perfect, they don't skimp on the meat. The staff is fun, friendly, and pleasant. One thing you need to know about me: I love bread & cheese. In this case, pretzels and cheese! Husband and I tried out their offerings on a recent visit to Triton Brewing. I got the Skywalker sandwich and a pretzel. Their sandwich buns are pretzel buns so yeah, I love me some pretzel! First of all, the sandwich was so good! It has turkey, cool ranch Doritos, habanero jack cheese, and jalapeno aioli. I always go for the spicy stuff! It definitely brought the heat so I was very happy! The Doritos added a nice crunch which I am always happy for on my sandwiches. The pretzel itself had a great outer crust but was soft and fluffy on the inside. The cheese on the side was good, but it was refrigerated so I would say warming the cheese up would make it even better. Husband had the Das Fritz which had Smoked Turkey, Avocado Ranch, Bacon, and Cheddar Cheese. He was a fan! So I probably should have reviewed this last time they visited my work, but better late than never? My work brings food trucks around every so often and Der Preztel Wagen has been around a few times now. Each time I try to convince myself to try a new sandwich and each time I order the Das Fritz. It is just...delicious...I mean...how could they screw up this combination: Turkey, Avocado Ranch, Bacon, and Cheddar Cheese. YUM. Their pretzel bread is outstanding! Price is fair for a food truck, which always seem to come with a bit of a premium. The combo is only ok and I skipped it last time. They also offer legit full size pretzels that look great but I haven't tried because I have to pretend to not be overly unhealthy sometimes. Another important aspect is that they are typically pretty fast about getting sandwiches out which is important at a business that has lots of people and only 30 minute lunch breaks! Der Pretzel Wagen popped up near my office in a cluster with Scratchtruck, NY Slice, and Taste the Caribbean last week. This set me to pondering. Do I run over and grab my beloved Scratch Burger? Or do I try something new? New won out because, well, it was Friday and chances are there would be red meat on the menu for dinner if Husband had anything to say about it. I opted for the Das Fritz. It was a perfect lunch morsel. The pretzel was appropriately soft in the middle and chewy-ish on the outside. The inside of the sandwich had the most amazing avocado ranch sauce that had my tastebuds screaming for more. At the last bite, I was both happy and wishing for more. This is my first food truck experience in Indy and it was delicious. The owner is really friendly, the menu is small but great! The Chuebacka was unique and tasty. The bun was perfect, the horseradish was not only good but also sinus clearing, and the meat was perfect! The pretzels are also great, really nothing on the truck that will disappoint. If you want a pretzel in Indianapolis, go to Taste of Philly on 42nd street, right off college. You can get 3, immaculately prepared pretzels for 2.75 and a humungo cup of cheese for another ~2 dollars or so. That's enough for two people. They're authentic and great. This place is a complete ripoff. Getting food out of a truck should not double or triple the cost of a pretzel. Hit up Taste of Philly, support *good* local businesses. read more

I have to say that my experiences with Der Pretzel Wagen continue to improve. I am glad I gave this place a few more chances after my initial "meh" experience. I first tried a pretzel here when they were parked at the Velodrome. The pretzel was pretty standard and came with the neon cheese. I did not like paying $1 for this cheese, because I've seen what a gallon of that stuff costs and Costco/Sam's Club and feel like it's quite the rip off. However, the pretzels keep getting better. They are the perfect texture, with a great combo of butter and salt. They keep getting better! I'd just recommend a change in the cheese. A place that prides itself in great pretzels needs to have great dips as well. Let's talk about their sandwiches. YUM! So many varieties, served warm on a (duh) pretzel bun. Pretzels make me happy. Warm, *really* good pretzels that is. Der Pretzel Wagen was the bright spot in an otherwise crappy day. My computer froze at work because of a virus. Then the elevator down the hall started smoking when the engine caught fire and we had to evacuate the building. I'd had enough, feeling a lot like Alexander and contemplating moving to Australia (it was a "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day"), I went out into the cold to find a snack at IUPUI's campus center. But on my way I saw a new addition to the daily line of trucks that park in front of the lecture hall. So I decided getting a cinnamon and sugar pretzel was just what I needed. I watched it get slathered with butter and then dipped into the cinnamon sugar mix. I was presented with a pretzel as big as the paper plate it came on. The inside was soft, warm, and fresh. It was delicious. The cinnamon sugar mixture was a perfect balance, sweet, but not too sugary. Lots of wonderful cinnamon. This pretzel made my day so much better, I kind of wish I'd gotten two. Pretzels are $4 and $1 more if you want cheese. I'm looking forward to trying the salted pretzel next time. read more

Meh. I just bought two soft pretzels off their food truck. They were greasy and overcooked. The flavor was virtually nothing. Disappointing.

First off, any vendor that has Star Wars themed sandwiches automatically gets an additional star in my book! But this will not be a review about one of those sandwiches, no this will be a review of their main item, the item that they are named after and that my dear Yelpers is the pretzel. This pretzel is served warm with just the right amount of salt. It is large and for the price, the appropriate size. Can be served with cheese, although I haven't sampled. This good truck cropped up outside my office window and I just had to try it. We get a variety of run of the mill (read boring) food trucks at our corporate headquarters but I rarely stop by. This one was just unique enough. I ordered a simple soft pretzel. I know, not very imaginative given they offer a variety if delicious sounding sandwiches on fresh pretzel rolls. Some of my coworkers did order sandwiches and gave great reports. My pretzel for the matter came out hot, doughey and amazing. It was light but not too light, crusty but not too crusty. My only complaint is that given the quality if the pretzel, their dipping options are an insult to the product. Come up with something of better quality that better accentuates your product. Wow, whoever handles their phone calls needs an attitude adjustment! I was so excited when I first found them as MANY German brands within our company. My manager said he called and left them numerous messages and emails with no response and the our event is next week. So, I was calling to see if they could make the event and the man who answered told me it would be "out of the question" for them to be available a week from now-!!! Out of the question? Really surprised I have done a review for this one yet as much as I get food from here. The owner and his team are are great and provide a really fun atmosphere besides the good food. Speaking of the food my favorite sandwich is the Skywalker because of the combination of the heat from the pepper jack cheese and jalepeno aioli really mixes well with the cool ranch Doritos. Best food truck in Indy. Their $10 Uber Combo nets you a pretzel bun sandwich, a 20oz drink, bag of chips, and a choice between a plain pretzel (salted) or a cinnamon and sugar pretzel. I can say I've eaten here a half dozen times and I've never been tempted to open the bag of chips as the pretzels are so filling and delicious. They also do pretzel minis (slider size sandwiches) but I would recommend sticking with their full size sandwiches. Just a note - they use Bavarian style pretzels and pretzel bread. We tried this food truck for the first time last night at the first Friday food truck festival. I ordered the Yoda Burger and my husband ordered the "wreck of the old '97" we both enjoyed our burgers! My husband said his was "the best burger and egg combo" he's ever had! Mine was a fantastic combination, but I have to say, halfway through the burger it became a little hard to eat. While I love the wasabi/ginger/Thai peanut sauce combo was fantastic, I would have enjoyed something to lighten it up a bit (and add a nice pop of color as well) May I suggest adding cilantro or something to lighten and freshen up the taste?
