I first discovered Gyro Grill by chance during a stop at Corner Market, an aptly-named local convenience store. I had just popped in for some iced tea and almonds, but I walked out with two delicious gyros and a big, happy smile instead! Seriously, what a surprise! As you enter the convenience store, head straight to the far left corner of the building. You'll find a deli-style counter with several places to sit, and some of the most delicious gyros I've found in Portland. The staff are super friendly, and open to customized orders. They have a wide selection of Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle Eastern food such as gyros, shawarma, falafel, baklava and more. I've never phoned my order in, but I'm sure that's possible. What impresses me most about this neighborhood gem is how speedy they are in preparing the food. Everything is prepared fresh, made-to-order right in front of customers. The thick, shaved slices of meat juicy and tender, but also have just a little bit of charred meat if you're lucky enough to get some from the exterior of the rotisserie. A hole in the wall, but really a convenient store, to get some gyros. Don't expect much as far as ambiance, but if you're on the go, it's a decent place to pick up gyros. Unfortunately, they ran out of beef while we were there so we got the lamb gyro and loaded fries with chicken. The fries tasted fine, but the chicken was nothing special. The lamb gyro were much tastier. They give you a nice portion of food. They forgot our order of regular fries so we had to remind them. They rushed it out in a timely manner. read more

If you're going to channel your inner Seinfeld soup nazi you better have the food to back it up. They don't. I'll start by saying that the food wasn't bad, the gyros are weird as it's a ground meat combo instead of traditional gyro slices, but I'm up for change if it's good. But the experience was horrible. I started with a call to order some food for pickup and should have just hung up the phone and looked elsewhere, but I went through with it and things just got worse. Call goes like this: Them: Hello. Me: (a little thrown off that a business would just say hello instead of the name) Uh hi, can I order some food for pick up? (still not sure if I had the right number) Them: Yes Me: Oh ok, are you ready? Them: I'm waiting.... Not a great start, but maybe the person that answers is having a bad day, so I continue. I proceed to order $70 of food including some gyros, a couple plates and extra tzatziki sauce. I start to confirm the order so it's right and he cuts me off telling me to hold on. He reads back part of the order and says he got it. Them: "Ok" *Hangs up the phone. Me: "Ok, how long....hello?" I go to pick up the food and go to the kitchen area and the guy says "What do you want?" I tell him that I called in an order and he asks "the big order?" Umm I guess? No idea if it's considered a big order but name a couple things in the order before he cuts me off. "Pay there." I take the receipt over to pay and ask the cashier if there is extra sauce on the order and the cashier goes "I don't know." Well, you're literally holding the order receipt so.... He looks at me so I ask if it's on the receipt. He reads it back and says no. After paying I go back to the kitchen area and ask for extra gyro sauce. He asks how many and I say 5. His response was really mad, like the order is going to take an extra hour or something. "For 5 I'm going to charge you." I tell him that's fine. I don't mind paying for the extras. He huffs over to the register to ring it up and again "pay there." So I head over and pay for the extra sauce. I get back and he's squirting a three difference sauces into little cups. I say "Oh I just wanted the tzatziki sauce" and he goes ballistic. "Why didn't you tell me that before?!?! I'm the only one here and I have a lot of work" I just look at him a bit surprised that he's gotten so mad about a minor request when I specifically ordered the sauce on the phone and then told him I wanted the gyro sauce. "You're going to have to wait, I have other orders to do." At this point I'm over being nice and spending my time with someone that's overly angry for nothing I've done. "Never mind, don't bother." I grab the sauces that were poured and put them in the bag to have him call me an a-hole while I walk out the door. Dude was unnecessarily angry from the get go, but to call me an a-hole when I'm leaving cause I don't want to wait around for his angry attitude to get me some more sauce is the epitome of a business that never deserves my business again. read more

I had the lamb gyro with everything on it. It was pretty good. Creatively wrapped. Pita was a tad dry but not too much. I've been seeking the best gyro in Sellwood Moreland and surrounding area and so far the best (in my humble gyro loving opinion) is Gyro Grill on 32nd and Johnson creek. I would definitely come back here and try other things but probably not the gyro. I'd prefer to give a 3.8, but if my choice is 3 or 4 I have to go with 3 as 4 is too high. read more

Don't be fooled by the exterior, this place is legit and so good. It's connected to a minimart, which in my experience is never a good sign for a restaurant, but everything here is made fresh. The gyros are so good and made with lamb shavings off the vertical broiler which any good gyro place should have. They put a ton of ingredients in it so it's pretty messy so I wouldn't go here for a date, but taste wise it's 5/5. The fries are also surprisingly great. Like McDonald's fries but better. read more

I've been on a mission to try all the gyro places in the area. This isn't too bad! I asked my husband to pick it up so I didn't see it inside, but he described it as a little restaurant inside the convenience store on the corner of 32nd and Johnson Creek, where you get a receipt to hand over to the store clerk to pay. The only negative things were when the Grill employee handed my husband the bag, my husband asked, "is this everything?" And the guy said yes. Husband drove home to discover the baklava was not in there so he drove back in rush hour to get it. He also ordered curly fries but got waffle fries instead. However, the prices were reasonable and everything was fresh and delicious. The falafels were a little.. spongy, which is interesting, as I've never had such a spongy falafel but it was by no means inedible. Most of the veggies were fresh except the tomatoes were mealy. Do not be fooled by the fact that it is apart of a mini mart, the food is great, I personally think it is the best gyro and Schwarma in Portland. Doesn't take too long for the food to be ready, and they have a small little waiting area. Prominently positioned tv inside had swimsuit/buttcheek "bathing beauties" videos on repeat. No ventilation or hand sanitizer. Didn't see hand washing or glove use, but wasn't watching like a hawk either. Outside full of cigarette butts & smells, with nowhere to sit. Time estimate given for order was 20 minutes but it took almost an hour, so just checking out completely on my phone in my car didn't feel like an option. I got the chicken plate and the chicken was wonderful. Large portions so would be easy to split into two meals, but the chicken and rice is so good it's hard to stop eating. There's a garlic spicy sauce and what I THINK is tzatziki sauce drizzled on top. It's not too spicy though, unless you are super sensitive to spice you should be fine. The Hummus was mediocre - a little runny and under seasoned for my taste. I did a little drizzle of it on top but between the other sauces on the chicken it wasn't necessary. I dipped some veggies in it and that was good too. You also get a small side of pickled veggies. They were fresh and tasty, though I would've liked them to be a little MORE pickled. Finally made it in to this joint, and wasn't disappointed! Had the lamb gyro, add hot sauce. Mango lassi as an extra treat. Lamb gyro was delicious, chunks of tender meat with an irregular cut shape which gave a perfect mix of chunk and strip. The onions, lettuce and tomato were fresh and colorful, and the tzatziki was dilly and creamy but not heavy at all. The pita bread was the perfect blend of soft and toasty in parts, and absorbed some of the extra juice perfectly, but of course I still ended up with some on my damned shirt. What else is new! Mango lassi was tangy and delicious. I would not hesitate to come back here again. Be ready for interesting seating, weather was nice outside so I sat on the slightly bizarre booth seat, making everyone turning the corner off of Tacoma onto Johnson Creek wonder what I was up to but let's be honest, that neighborhood can use a little intrigue every now and again. read more

I'm from Detroit, where Middle Eastern food is as commonplace as coffee shops in Portland. I know what's good, and this place isn't very good. This was my first trip to Gyro Grill, and probably my last. It was quite average. Plentiful for the price, but I wasn't terribly impressed. I ordered a lamb kabap plate, a chicken kabap plate, fattoush salad, and a hummus & pita side. The plus side, huge portions of meat for the price. Meat was seasoned well. Dolmas, pretty tasty, was added on the side of all of our dishes. That's the only good things I have to say. The minus: Flies in the kitchen. I watched a few land on the food while I was waiting. For two plates and an order of hummus, I was only given ONE piece of pita. Certainly this must be a mistake. For a 4.99 side of hummus & pita, and two entrees, the pita portion was a joke. Portions are a little out of proportion. More rice was needed. Rice needs seasoning. Hummus is a little thin in consistency and flavor. Would benefit from more tahini. I can only describe the Fattoush as stupid. This wasn't a fattoush salad at all-- it was undressed shredded lettuce meant for the sandwiches, 1" thick tomato slices, topped with handfuls of pickled mixed vegetables. I asked for garlic sauce, but this wasn't any sort of Toum. My chicken was doused in a runny, flavorless Tzatsiki and some sort of oily buffalo sauce. The lamb was dry. I eat here every day. Never had a bad meal. Usually double down with a lamb gyro and a chicken gyro. Not sure which is better. Both are appropriately sauced and are topped with fresh veggies.
