What a great find that we stumbled upon during our 4T hike! A little away from Portland downtown but located in a very vibrant food pod. Love the vibe of it all. The ordering part was a bit confusing at first maybe because I was not very clear or maybe because the truck person's first language was not English or probably both, he heard 2 chicken shawarmas without tomatoes. When my order was ready I was confused when he started handing me two of the same thing. He then realized the confusion and was nice enough to refund me and also compensate me with delicious baklava. The chicken shawarma was amazing, rich, delicious! Would definitely recommend and I will return for the gyros! read more

I went to order food at 5:50 PM, and the worker told me they were already finished and not taking any more orders. I respected that and left. After I got food from another place, I came back by and saw the same worker still taking orders from other people. That made me feel disrespected and unfairly treated. Because I am Arabic, it felt like he refused to serve me on purpose. If that was the reason, it is shameful and not acceptable. Everyone deserves to be treated equally and with respect. read more

Food Cart~Lamb Arabi with fries was so good. I believe it's a shawarma that cut into 4's and French fries were piping hot/seasoned very well. Chicken Plate~we didn't care for it lacked flavor (chicken was dry) but, the hummus-(soft warm pita bread) side salad and tzatziki sauce was the star of the dish. Everyone palates are different but, this is my honest review. Service~The owner was very nice and, answered all of our questions. It was the first time trying Mediterranean Food and, we plan to visit again to try a few other items that sounded really good. Ambiance~it's several wonderful food carts to choose from but, we had only one in mind. We were on our way to an actual Mediterranean Restaurant when we looked over to our left. So we were just going walk around to see what they had and proceeded with our night. Everything you could possibly be craving is in this particular spot and, it's very clean with great vibes. First time visiting the food cart pod and decided to go with Shawarma House. I got the beef kebab plate. It came with pita bread, hummus and tzatziki sauce. The beef kebabs were okay. Not as flavorful as other places I've tried. The rice was very bland and so was the hummus. Good portions compared to other locations. The main issue was the communication barrier; the worker spoke little English, which made ordering a little confusing. If you're patient, it's worth a try. read more

Pretty average spot in the CORE food truck plaza in Montevilla. Had the 3-meat combo and the lamb was basic and dry, chicken was ok and couldn't actually find the 3rd meat. Over salad was nice but no feta, dressing tomatoes, etc. super basic. Nice guys but slow service and average food. Hm. read more

Shawarma Express is a food truck in a unique food truck dining area called "Core, collective Oregon eateries." The dining court is well maintained and has clean, attractive, and proper restrooms. Now back to Shawarma Express . . . The operators were friendly folks who did things right. Unlike many food trucks, they had a picture menu for every entree (see pic), which I found very helpful for finding what I was looking for. I had the Lamb Arabi, a tasty burrito-style wrap of lettuce, tomato, onion, feta cheese, tzatziki sauce, homemade garlic sauce, and a side of fries. The Lamb Arabi was tasty, and the fries were okay. This is fairly new cart with new owners. The kabob was tasty and juicy. The French fries were better than McDonald's fries, no really... The best thing though is that they are very nice and accommodating. The food pod itself is comfortable and inviting with lots of seating. read more

This Shawarma Express cart is located in the new CORE pod on se 82nd just south of Powell and is the cart closest to the indoor seating hall. The man operating the cart was affable and very friendly. We ordered a Falafel Plate, Kebab Plate and Baklava. The plates came with generous sides of humus and Tzatziki with a dolma. The falafel and meat was served on top a nice portion of rice and salad. The kebabs looked nothing like the menu photo which showed 2 pieces of grilled koobideh kebabs. The meat was all fallen apart and placed on a heap on top of the rice with tahini squirted on top. (See photo) The ground meat was succulent and flavorful however did not resemble kabobs in any way. The falafel platter came with 6 falafels which were all very tough to bite through and very dry. Not to our pleasure at all I'm sorry to say. The baklava was nice. read more

I definitely don't think it was spicy, but the spicy sauce they used added great flavor...so definitely opt for the 'spicy' lamb gyro! -The pita is served hot, which is great. It is very light and fluffy as well....and they even gave us extra pita for free when we ran out (with a lot of hummus left) -The french fries were nice, crispy and worth getting -The hummus was good, made fresh, and a beautiful creamy texture. I've tasted many many MANY lamb gyros over the years. I can finally say I've found the most delicious one I've ever had! This one was perfect. Wow! Located in a block of just food trucks, Shawarma Express reigns supreme in terms of most Yelp reviews and highest ratings out of all the nearby food trucks, so I decided to try this place after making a complete "circle" (it was more of a square) around the block. I got a delicious Chicken Shawarma Plate for a flat $7 (gotta love no sales tax in Oregon), and it tasted almost as good as Halal Guys, and that's pretty darn good. A lot of the food trucks on this block are probably hit or miss, but you can't go wrong with Shawarma Express! read more

I will be making Oregon more diverse and famous by bringing the whole community to my food carts. With the inspiration of my mother’s hours upon hours of creating incredible meals for my family, the memory of mealtime joy in Iraq, and my own hard work, I will present authentic delicious affordable meals for people. My Shawarma carts will be a part of the fast growing highly competitive Portland food cart industry. We have worked in the industry for 14 years and now want to take my life and commitment to the next level. I have a family and a community to support and represent with my work and dedication. The site at Midtown beer is in downtown, where shopping and commuter foot traffic meet. When I am able to make this successful, it will be one more step toward creating a true Middle Eastern mall. At the present, I will content myself with creating a business that represents the aromas, flavors, colors and hospitality that Iraq and my mom offer the world.

I believe that combining my experience and background with my deep involvement in the Middle Eastern community gives me a serious edge over other “startups”. I have the energy insight and know how. I will bring the deliciousness of foods my mother prepares and share them. Some of the specific foods I will offer include kebabs, shawarma, and gyros; curry plates as well as other Iraqi pastries and drinks. Iraqi shish kabobs are amazing. Perfect for 2 meals. I eat one kabob with a whole blistered onion and tomato and the greens included as a wrap with their pita bread for lunch. Then the other kabob with another onion and tomato for dinner. Tzatziki and hummus are amazing too. Lamb shank is literally fall off the bone. 10/10

I have always thought of souvlaki as a Greek version of a gyro-meat in a pita wrap with sauce & veggies. Not here. You get the meat and a pickled vegetable and that's it. That's why you need some sides and bread. The bread is better than a lot of pita I've had. We also got an order of hummas (some of the best I've had anywhere. Maybe it's because they put a dab of zhoug-a mixture of herbs & spices packed with flavor. It was as smooth as silk), as well as beet salad. It had quinoa that seemed to have been fried because it had a slight crunch which I loved. It was the perfect foil for the golden beets and radish in the salad. We ordered just the right amount of food for the 4 of us (one piece of pita each, one salad, one hummus and an order each of souvlaki). I noticed some vegetarian options on the menu as well. The best part of the meal was the pita bread, it was cooked perfectly!
