This place specializes in Japanese curry. Tyler is the owner & the curry is his own recipe (not from a packet). They get 3.5 stars. Had the Tonkatsu curry. The curry was the star of the show & was very good. It tasted unique & complex. The pork was crispy & juicy, tender & tasty enough (with curry it's ok but on its own it's more evident). Pickles are extra. This is the first Japanese curry place I've been to which charges for pickles. They served the pork with tonkatsu sauce on the side. It was good with a fruit tang. Came here for a traditional Japanese curry lunch. They had all the traditional curry dishes that I miss from my time in Japan. My wife was tempted by their Gyu Don bowl and the Beef Sukiyaki Nabe. However, she decided on the Gyu Curry and I chose the King Curry. Since the King Curry serves two we shared both dishes. Such a great decision. Sauce was perfect. Meat was juicy and crispy. Even the rice was "super awesome" as per my wife's review. Highly recommend visiting this restaurant if you are visiting Toronto or if you live here. this is my second time at gyugyuya - the first time was awhile back. I did notice that the portions now aren't as generous as before, but it still did fill me up. the curry definitely isn't as flavourful as I would have liked, but it wasn't bad. The restaurant itself is spacious for the amount of people that it can fit. The ambiance is really nice because it fits the idea of eating fried Japanese food; the music is always nice and the tables are always clean. Service is also very fast and the waitresses always check up on how you're doing, and will always be ready to refill your water! I had the gyu curry with chicken kaarage on the side; this is always my favorite dish to get. It comes super quickly, the amount of food is alot for one person which is awesome. The kaarage is always the right amount of crispy and juicy, though I do hope that the gyu curry had more beef on it but you also have the boiled egg and the shredded cabbage as well. Here's what we tried: Gyu Gyu King Curry: A massive dish featuring pork, chicken, and shrimp cutlets. Perfect for sampling everything the restaurant has to offer in one go. Gyu Curry: My favorite. Thinly sliced beef served over rice with curry sauce. Simple but delicious, with just the right amount of flavor. Aji Hurai: Surprisingly good! Gyugyuya is the only place in Toronto that exclusively specializes in Japanese curry so their menu may seem small however don't let that stop you from trying this place out. They have curry dishes as well as non curry dishes (such as their donburi bowls). Tonkatsu Curry: The tonkatsu had a nice crisp texture and had a reasonable portion of meat. I wish it was a bit more juicy on the inside but however I felt it was mostly a foundation for the main flavour which is the curry sauce. The curry comes out hot and is great to drizzle over with the egg and lettuce. The sauce isn't spicy so, if you tend to worry about spice level and it's your first time trying, this wouldn't be a problem. This is a great comfort food meal for one. Overall, I really like this spot in Downtown Toronto. During the weekend daytime was a perfect time to go, it wasn't too busy and was easily able to get seats. The service was quick especially for dine in service. Additional note, it's more of a casual dining spot so the cutleries were disposable. The only Japanese curry house this side of town! The big cow logo might be confusing but curry is their speciality as hinted at by the restaurant's colour palette. We were seated immediately and waters brought out in really cool Thermos branded cups. You tick off your own order for mains, apps, drinks, and add-ons on a sheet. Our waitress confirmed our order with us and circled the items that we selected for the kitchen. The food was served quick and was really hot. I ordered a classic - chicken Katsu curry with cheese added. The cheese was torched and had that triggered flavor versus an oven melted cheese. The curry was very flavorful and possibly bordering on salty. Perfectly accompanied by the shredded cabbage and bed of rice it was served on. I got exactly that and I noticed that their bowls changed from the last time I was here but unsure of the portion did as well as I was just as full. Curry comes out piping hot, enough to semi-cook the cabbage and thick enough to coat the rice without it being too watery. Due to my previous positive experience I thought I would try something new at this location. I ordered the karaage curry which turned out to be ok. Presentation wise the food was served in a metal container and the rice and curry looked like it was just thrown in there. I get that it is essentially fast food but it still felt very sloppy. In terms of taste the karaage chicken was done well as it was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. As for the curry itself I felt like they did not give enough so it was difficult to taste as the rice overpowered the curry. What little I did taste the flavour was not too strong and there was a hint of spiciness in the curry. The service was a bit disappointing here as the hostess repeatedly refused to let us sit further in the restaurant. I get why they may have done that but we were right by the door and it was cold everytime someone opened it so we wanted to be more comfortable. We were allowed to move after we forced the issue and all the seats ended up being used anyway as the place filled up. Other than that service was nothing special. All in all this visit came in below my expectations. I enjoyed the food for the most part but the experience just felt lacking. Gyugyuya is one of my fav places to visit when I'm in downtown If I'm craving some rice. We came in around 3:00pm which was not busy, and immediately we were greeted by a server to choose a seat. Water and a menu was promply given as soon as we sat down. The menu doesn't have too many options as a majority of their main dishes would be their gyu (beef) rice, except with a few variation to choose from. The servers were very helpful when we had questions and when I asked about the bathroom, they cautioned me to be careful when I walk down. We ordered the Gyudon and the Curry Gyudon which did not take too long to come out. The portion sizes were good for the price you pay as the dishes were pretty big. The beef on both dishes were very soft and tender I conparison to other places I've tried before (where the beef was too crispy). I was very satisfied with the Gyudon as I liked the simple harmony between the regular beef and plain rice. For the gyu curry, the first few bites were tasty, however as I had more bites, I felt that there was just a bit too much curry as I couldn't taste much of the beef at all and I found the the curry taste abit too strong as I'm used to the slightly sweeter and lighter Japanese curry. Overall I had a good experience here, and the servers were attentive to our table. This is hands down my favourite place to have Japanese curry in the city. The prices are fair, and portions are huge. Nothing can beat awesome food at affordable prices. I ordered the Gyu Curry (Beef) with a side of Yakitori and Chicken Karaage. I found everything to be seasoned perfectly. To start, the curry was just sweet and savoury. The beef was very tender with some fat, making it extra flavourful. It paired nicely with the curry rice. The chicken karaage consisted of lightly battered chicken that was mildly seasoned. I loved eating it with the side of mayonnaise. The yakitori was seasoned with salt. It was nicely grilled. I love how simple dishes such as these could taste so good. I've been thinking of the warm flavours of Japanese curry, especially that of Coco Ichibanya from Japan lately. This resulted in me having to go to Gyugyuya to give it a try. The aesthetic of the restaurant is yellow plastered walls. The food is served on metal plates, and double-walled​ water cups (no sweating!). I got the katsu curry because tonkatsu with japanese curry is one of my favourite combinations. The curry is darker than what I'm used too, but extremely delicious. The curry lost a star because the curry lacks dimension in its flavours but definitely one of the best picks for toronto! Service is pleasant and efficient. The portion is generous and comes with a side salad and soup (I would appreciate if the side salad is slightly bigger - it is usually a one bite salad). This was my first taste of Japanese curry as an (obviously Canadian) Japanese man! I ordered the beef cheese curry along with a few other sides. The thought of cheese in a curry was really strange but it looked so good that I had to try it! The beef was really good but may be a bit fatty for some. The cheese added a nice mellow element to the dish and dulled some of the spiciness. I could have used more spice but I really enjoyed it overall. I ordered the yakitori and chicken karage, which were both excellent! The service was friendly and quick. I liked that we were able to get in and out fairly quickly. Came here with friends after work! I had the Yasai (vegetable) curry and it was delicious. I also tried some of the fried shrimp from a friends curry and it was yummy. I would be open to trying that one next time! Not much variety for vegetarians/vegans in the curries, but really even just with the vegetables it is so delicious so I don't mind. They do have several toppings/sides that you can order to customize your dish or have to share. However, I did like the idea of adding cheese into the curry to give it a different taste. For the Oyakodon, the egg was cooked perfectly and had a very sweet taste. I few of my Torontian friend had recommended this place to me as a must-try during my visit to Toronto. As I entered the place, I hit with a smell of curry and fried food. We decided to eat dinner quite late so the place was half empty, but I can imagine how this small restaurant can be packed during rush hour. We first ordered beer which they got a good selection of. Nothing too special; just the common kinds you'll find in any japanese bars. I ordered the Tonkatsu meal while my friend ordered the Karaage meal. The meals were served very quickly. Both were delicious. The meat was deep fried to perfection, crispy and juicy. The sauce was tasty and not overly salted. Both meals were served with a side of slaw and eggs. The only suggestion I would have to is to include more veggies to the menu. Perhaps offer side dishes consisting of vegetables or legumes. The food is satisfying. Service is remarkably quick during the lunch hour, but don't expect anyone to top up your water unless you ask. I ordered the gyu cheese curry. The gyu is thinly cut, but the cuts aren't very clean. They probably expect that you won't notice by the time you mix it with the curry rice and cheese. The extra $1 cost of the gyu cheese curry over the regular gyu curry gets you a large mound of cheese, well worth it if you like cheese in your dishes. I didn't leave hungry, compared to the earlier reviews - and the person beside me couldn't even finish off their "Gyu Gyu King Curry ($20.99)" I think that it's pricey ($12.99) for what it is - beef curry with cheese on rice, but of course a good part of the cost goes toward its downtown location and staff. But maybe if you're after a normal katsu curry, you're better off going for Kaiju in the Aura Food Court at Yonge/Gerrard. They take credit cards, including Android Pay. read more

This time I went on a Saturday afternoon and I didn't have to wait AND the food was still totally worth it! My friend and I got the King Curry to share which was a huge portion AND we had leftover rice and curry to take as well. The only thing that we didn't like was that they serve everything in these metal plates/cups that reminded us of the hospital.
