While passing through the area we came across this little gem and decided to get some of their homemade cookies. We ordered a dozen chocolate chip cookies and a dozen monster cookies, and wow! Drove to Au Gres at 8 this morning to make a "doughnut run" for the granddaughter and neighbor kids. Walked into the entry lobby/baked good take out area and found one dark display case with barely any doughnuts and empty trays. They'd been open for over an hour and no fresh doughnuts were out- it wasn't because they were sold out. It just was a depressing display. I really wanted to support them, but, here it is, Fourth of July tourist time, and they came across as just not caring. Off to Tawas. A dedicated bakery in Au Gres should be displaying their wares and tradition. They look to be happy with just getting by and letting the Walmart and Neiman's in Tawas sell the baked goods. read more

So, I have purchased baked goods a few times and a pizza once form H & H. They were ok, middle of the road, just fine, nothing to write home about, a solid three star experience. Today we called ahead for pie options to pick up and had one held for us. We chose to have breakfast first and sidled up to the buffet. It looked decent enough. We sat down and my husband took his first bite of hash... it was a slow motion event. I saw the long hair hanging from his fork as it entered his mouth as I said "Nooooo..." but too late. He pushed aside the hash and headed toward the eggs in which another hair was found. Now, we aborted breakfast at this point. We told the waitress quietly and exited stage right and skipped the pie as well. So, let's face it, it's a buffet and who knows the source, but all of the buffet options were covered with lids. So, maybe order off the menu? I will likely not be dining there again soon. read more

My hubby and I stopped at H&H for dinner on our way home from a relaxing trip up north. The service was incredible. Our waitress, Renae, was attentive, friendly and very prompt with drink refills and such. It was great to see her smile. The food was also incredible. My husband ordered a burger and it was juicy, delicious and hot! He commented on how good it was as soon as he had the first bite! My Cobb Salad was also very good and I would definitely order it again. We'd love to stop by for breakfast sometime, but dinner was great! A return trip to Indy from northern Michigan wouldn't be complete without English muffin bread from H&H Bakery. And for the cost of a loaf ($1.50 in 2017) it feels like theft. You can get English muffin bread at a lot of places (Meijer) but it just isn't as good as this. Slather it with some of my homemade strawberry jam (berries from Spencer Berry Farm in Noblesville Indiana) and breakfast is served. Win. Full disclosure I have never eaten here but looks like a Big Boy, Perkins, etc. Always nice people. read more

All the basics but the biscuits were seriously smaller in diameter than a half dollar... Which would not have been an issue except.... Buffet stocking: 2/5. Four items empty each trip, including biscuits after we got a single one to "share".... Layout could use a overhaul as the tables neat the buffet caused patrons to have to weave and shimmy past chairs just to get food. Bathroom cleanliness: 4/5 walls around hand dryer were quite dirty but besides that the floors and counter were clean. Bathroom note: The lack or partitions between urinals is, sadly, not a surprise in a small town. I do not know what is going on with the soap dispenser but it seems like it is 3 parts water to 1 part soap. And the single dispenser for two sinks makes for an awkward issue when two people are trying to wash thier hands at the same time. And for my favorite part of this restaurant!!! I can't speak for the restaurant side of the business but family members can't drive by without picking up something from the bakery side of the business. Reasonaly priced baked goods. I've had several of their pies, several of their pastries and several of their cookies. They're all excellent! Now here again same day matter of fact for supper watched our family's food go to another table then back into kitchen. Then return to us in less then two minutes. Then 15 mins later we received our meal prime rib x2. Had two ask twice for food finally came prime rib was over done and no taste. Under heat lamp way to long. Looking around when we got here notice amount of people 15 maybe it double in twenty minutes. Not happy with service nor food. So here is my picture of med rare prime rib. The food here is good. For sure a fine spot for all you can eat breakfast buffet and lunch. Homemade breads and other bakery items are tasty. Carry out pizza at night is the best in town. The atmosphere is maybe not the best for an evening affair, even though they sell booze. The lights are bright and it just doesn't feel like a dinner joint. Overall really good. We stopped in for dinner traveling north. Homemade pastie, sounded good. It was filled with ground beef, carrots,onion and rutabaga. The veggies were quite small shreds vs the larger diced pieces I'm used to, but quite tasty. Daughter got chili and liked all the meat and tomatoes in it. Husband got broasted chicken and liked it. I was hoping for better things this season from H&H. Very disappointed. Gone several times for donuts in the am. They have little selection and not always fresh. Today, they open at 7 but only very few fresh donuts available- day old on offer. Told that fresh might be available in an hour. We walked in for breakfast and just about every booth had dirty dishes and/or food on it. Ended up finding a booth by the bathrooms. Ordered the breakfast buffet which had tasteless scrambled eggs, watery corn beef hash, overcooked French toast and pancakes. The bacon,sausage and redskin potatoes were good as were the biscuits. The wait staff was pleasant. The main issue I had with this place was the lack of cleanliness. The floor looked as if it hadn't been washed in years. There was old, dusty food under the booths, and the window blinds were covered with a mix of splattered food and an inch of greasy dust. I wonder what the kitchen looked like. read more

Up until a few years ago, this place would have been 4 stars, minimum. But these days, since a new owner took over a couple years ago, this place is shit. Food portions got smaller; prices got higher. Customers started staying away; so the good wait staff moved on; which made the service worse; which kept customers away..... The last time we went here, which was in Sept 2017; We came in around 4 pm, and there were two other tables occupied, and one waitress. We were not greeted by her, or even acknowledged as we sat down. She popped in and out of the kitchen, talking to one of the other tables, like she knew them I suppose. We waited five minutes.... no waitress. Waited another couple minutes, and I got up and grabbed menus for us from the hostess station, in full view of her. Waited another five minutes, after reading the menus and choosing a meal. Still no waitress contact. Keep in mind that she has gone in and out of the kitchen several times, and talked to both of the other tables. She hasn't even glanced at us. After over ten minutes of waiting; we got up and left. No comment from the waitress, or the FOUR people hanging out behind the front counter. This place is BULLSHIT. If they want to go out of business, just go out of business already. Their baked goods are fine; and take-out pizza still seems to be good. But don't ever go there for a sit-down meal. You will have a bad time. read more
