We recently bought a house in Teravista and the yard was really neglected. It was obvious that we were going to have to re-do the lawn. So, we began the arduous task of trying to find a contractor. Not that it's hard to find a contractor, it's just hard to find a good one. I looked on Yelp and found a couple of prospects to come give me bids. As this was during the spring, they were all busy so it took a while to get the bids. In the interim, a flyer was stuck in our door for H&H landscaping, so we thought we'd give him a call too. The owner, Hector Hernandez, was working in the area and promised to stop by that evening. When he showed up (at the time he said he would), he seemed real nice, low key and shortly I had a price in hand. I asked him to flesh it out a bit so that, when I was comparing bids, it would be more apples to apples. Well, we finally got the other two bids in and Hector's bid was about 60% of the lower of the other two bids. So, I'm facing that conundrum of elaborate professional bids vs the written on a piece of notebook paper bid and the corresponding price difference. But, Hector seemed like a do-right guy and I didn't really want to do this anyway, and particularly didn't want to plant San Augustine grass (Thank you, Teravista!), so we decided to take a chance on Hector. I'm glad we did. He estimated 9 pallets of grass, and they cut the residual scruffy grass down below the roots, spread a layer of top soil and fertilizer (didn't know he was going to do that), and put down the grass. He didn't order the grass until the day before and it was delivered the day of the work. His explanation, he wanted the grass as fresh as possible. If that was all he had done, we'd been completely satisfied. (But, wait, there's more!) As our backyard seemed to be a clay swamp, I thought it would be nice if all that scruffy grass root stuff could work it's way back to the back yard, so I could spread it and till it into the soil to amend the clay soil. So, I asked Hector if they would mind wheelbarrowing that all the way around the house to the back yard. (That shouldn't take much time, right? Yeah, right!) Anyway, I'd be glad to pay extra for the service and told him so. He didn't seem to mind and they toted that stuff to the back and put it where I asked. They also spent a good deal of time after the laying of the grass to make sure the sprinkler system was functional and not impeded. Now, it comes time to settle up the bill. I'd told Hector I'd give him an additional $200 for the wheelbarrowing, He ended up with a pallet and a half of unused grass. When we were settling accounts (I had paid half up front to cover the grass costs), Hector refused the additional $200 with a shrug and tried to refund me for the unused grass. I asked him if he had any jobs that he could use that grass on and he said he did, so I suggested that I pay the full original price and he keep the grass. He thought that was great and we parted happy as clams. (Are clams really that happy? I digress) The result was amazing. People walking by always comment and inquire who did the work. We've seen joggers divert and come over and rub the grass. Anyway the yard looks fabulous! The only problem is that the grass is so darn healthy that I have to mow it twice a week. And, as we mow our grass on the highest setting, our sprinkler heads turned out to have been originally installed too low. (So, to the Hector-signal!) He came over and adjusted all our sprinkler heads (digging them out to do so) for a pittance. One of my neighbors who's sprinkler system wiring had been chewed through by his dogs asked me for Hector's info. He later told me that Hector was less than 1/2 the prices he had been quoted and that he was scheduling Hector to fix his sprinklers. According to Hector's cards, he does just about everything in the lawn and garden area. Pruning trees, retaining walls, edging, brush removal along with the usual lawn services. So, to say that I would recommend them would be a gross understatement. Hector and George (I believe that's his major assistants name. We needed some work done in the front yard and Hector gave us a great quote and great service. He told us what we needed to do to care for the sod and the yard and we're really happy with the work he did. Called Hector to get an estimate on one of our rental properties. Needed to have leaves cleaned up, lawn mowed and edged. Beds needed to be weeded and mulched. The price Hector quoted was very fair but it is his work that makes him such a keeper. I have not been so impressed by a young adult in a very long time. His work was impeccable. He was aware of the smallest detail and really took his time to make sure the job was down right the first time. And to top it alll off he was the politest young men I think I have ever met. So glad we found Hector!!! We will be using him for all our landscaping needs for many years to come!!!! read more

I called H&H Lawn and Landscaping to set up a time to have an estimate done on yard work. I gave the owner my name, cell number, and address, and set a time for Monday in the evening. Not only did he not show, he never called to reschedule or apologize. Based on this level of initial service, I would not recommend them. read more
