They never called back any of the three times I reached out to them and didn't respond to a follow up text message this last time. We found River Rock on Yelp and went there to check out their supplies for landscaping, they have very wide variety of stones, gravels and basically all you need at a very good price. We bought a yard of crashed limestone to lay out gravel pathway. and some black lawn metal fencing pieces(since home depot and lowe's only have thinner ones which only comes with ugly brown and green) the black looks perfect and clean, good contrast with white gravels, also they are 10 ft long and 14gage, stronger than what home depot and lowe's have. Jenny was very helpful showing us what we have and Brant also come help us to determine how much gravel we need and how to lay the stone pathway to look nicer, gave us couple ideas of what we need to do. We are not professional but we enjoyed doing it ourselves. And after all the pathway looks great. read more

We had a disappointing experience with River Rock. I contacted them in January 2016 for a landscape plan for our small front and backyard. Helen was super responsive and came out to discuss our budget and ideas in detail. We received the plan and were very happy with it. However, following that the problems began. In April we had a large tree fall at our house during a storm which damaged our front sidewalk, which we hired River Rock to repair. We came home to find the sidewalk had been re-laid incorrectly so there was a 2 inch gap between the sidewalk and the driveway. They had also driven bobcat through our neighbor's yard and damaged a significant amount of their grass. There was debris in our plant beds and our rosemary bush had been uprooted and eventually died. We weren't home while the work was being done but our neighbors told us the person doing the work was sleeping in their truck when they walked by. River Rock came that evening to collect payment and when I explained my issues with their work they were quick to state that the grass would repair itself and offered to provide a bid (i.e., charge us) to repair the incorrectly laid driveway. After my husband and I expressed dissatisfaction with those solutions, Brant was contacted and they agreed to come out and fix our neighbor's grass (which they did), but nothing was done about the sidewalk. I still hadn't ruled out using River Rock for the yard but wanted to discuss my issues and expectations for the project with Brant. I sent an email on August 5 and never received a response. We decided to go with SweetWater instead and were very happy with their responsiveness, professionalism, and execution of the landscape plan. read more

I chose River Rock based on the great yelp reviews. What a disappointment. Brant came to our house in early November, provided a quote, was friendly and knowledgeable, so I hired him. He said he would email the contract in the next several days and provide a start date for the first week of December. After 3-4 weeks went by and several calls/emails made to find out when we would receive the contract and start date only to hear "I'll have it to you in several days" we gave up once December rolled around and hired someone else. Funny thing is I received an email from John at River Rock asking if I would like to set up a visit for a quote. Seriously? The lack of communication and poor customer service was ridiculous. I received 3 different quotes for a landscaping job in my backyard. There was nothing in the yard but grass so it was like a blank canvas just waiting for a creative person to come up with a landscape design. Out of the 3 companies only River Rock came to my house and spent quality time with me discussing my needs and wishes. The other 2 came one time and came up with boring ideas and the prices were very high and they just emailed me the designs. However, Christy with River Rock personally came to my house with her design ideas! I really appreciated the personal touch and care that she extended to me. The job took 2 days. One day to remove the grass and the second day they did an entire installation on a 65 Ft bed. Also they laid a beautiful flagstone patio. Christy was here most of the time on installation day. I wish I could give more stars! I called Brant & got an estimate scheduled for Tuesday. He was super nice & gave me a really great price on clearing our front flowerbed & adding mulch & plants. He even had a great suggestion on what to do with an eyesore spot we had where an old pond used to be! He emailed me a quote right away & since it was under my budget I asked him to go ahead and re-mulch all our backyard beds as well. We needed the job done ASAP so we could put our house on the market the following week. He had a crew there (in the freezing cold) by that Thursday (less than 48 hours after the initial meeting)! The crew was amazing! They all worked non-stop until the entire job was done. That day also happened to be trash day & when the trash man spilled my garbage on the street & drove off one of the guys from the crew came running up from the back to help me pick it up after he saw what had happened! That really speaks to the quality of people that work at this company! The yard looked so good & we ended up selling the house before we even had it listed online! We hired River Rock and Brant to do several things at our house. The crew was professional, on time, and did a great job. We had new crushed granite installed, some metal edging, fill dirt on one house side, and mulching as well as tree trimming (it was becoming a hazzard, but we only moved in 8 months ago...first chance we've had to address this). Brant even started early because his schedule got freed up and came back out when they forgot to leave a sewer access drain uncovered. The one thing I'd say was less than optimal was the communications were a little sparse, but when I talked to Brant in person, I found out that they are expanding their business so I'm going to guess the communication problem was due to them being so busy. Overall, I'd highly recommend them and I'm definitely going to use them for future projects! read more

I read the reviews here on Yelp and then emailed River Rock about a quote. John responded to me and then went by my place to do an assessment. Basically, I wanted my zero-scape jungle cut back, and a tree planted, which he helped me choose. About a week or so later I had a quote. Since it was right around the holidays and the weather was crappy when we were doing all this, it took a few weeks to get to it, but I was in no hurry, so I definitely am not dinging them for that. I got home on the day they performed the work and was blown away. They did exactly what I wanted and needed: 1) to be able to see what I had in the yard, and 2) to get it to a state where I could then maintain it. I have been searching for 2 days for someone to rent me a device to put the seed I have bought into the ground. No one has them and all the fancy landscaping companies have a minimum charge that is 5x the size that I need. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH!!!! Terrible customer service, very bad job, over-priced. They did a TERRIBLE JOB on my property, and Christy did not follow up, and then did not return my phone calls. My wife asked River Rock to put a bunch of BIG drought resistant plants in, and she described what she wanted, and also emailed photos of plants we had in mind. She emphasized BIG plants to fill in the area. She also emphasized DROUGHT plants. Christy recommended plants as well that she assured us would do well in Austin's very hot April-September climate. She was not at the rental property as we were on vacation and then business trips for months, but needed the work done. First their workers put very cheap "weed block fabric" in. Very poor quality fabric that ended up not stopping any weeds, and tore like tissue paper. Secondly, I found out many months later that their workers put the weed fabric over TWO sprinkler heads, completely blocking the water and the plants around there which all died. I could not figure out why the plants died until I found the fabric OVER the buried sprinkler heads. Sloppy work. Thirdly- several of the plants were very small and not what I wanted at all. Fourth- they just randomly scattered plants around the front yard with no regards to design or uniformity. It is not professional looking at all! Fifth- my wife told her from the start that she wanted big plants to fill in the area. Christy instead chose many tiny plants, and some plants with very sharp edges that look like alligator teeth which we did not want. After the property manager texted over the many small plants to me, wife called Christy and told her they were way too small! She assured her that they would grow much bigger in the Spring and Summer, which they never did. They remained the exact tiny size when they were first put in, which is why I'm leaving this review over a year after installation. I could go on about my wife's dissatisfaction over the job, but just don't bother using them. They charge like 5 times the cost of each of the the plant's actual cost. They won't return your calls and the work was so bad! read more

We hired RR landscaping to replace a ragged garden that ran along the side of our driveway. In it's place we wanted a flagstone sidewalk. Brant was so responsive, professional, knowledgable and easy to work with. We'd never done a project like this before and so we had lots of "dumb" questions and the staff at RR gladly and quickly answered every one. Would I recommend River Rock to a friend or relative? Some of their ideas and work were satisfactory, but their overall performance and reliability seemed unnecessarily erratic to me. I was continually frustrated with their inconsistent work scheduling and felt their work required constant oversight. I believe this company is well-intentioned, but perhaps lacks experience at the staff level and seems incapable of stick-to-itiveness once a project begins. Our in-ground sprinkler system broke 4 days before our departure on 2-month trip. Left messages with several companies and picked the first one who called back. They came and said they didn't have the correct part, but they could order it and it would take a week or two ($95). Then River Rock contacted me and I explained the problem. He sent two very nice and knowledgeable crew members over that afternoon and they fixed the system in about 45 minutes. Their truck was full of parts! It can be a little scary hiring a landscaping company solely on their website and yelp scores, but I hired RR last month to tear out and install a new limestone sidewalk in my back yard, tear out a 200 sq ft strip of overgrown "stuff" and replace it with blue spruce trees and river rock, and top off my existing gravel around the house. They did an excellent job! Excellent quote process, excellent installation, easy to handle tweaks to the original project, and completed in the time quoted. THEY REMEMBERED TO DO EVERYTHING! Absolute worse customer experience that I have ever had. I emailed Steve who was extremely informal and short with me. I inquired about an irrigation project for my back yard. He asked for a lot plan via email and once he received it, he sent a very informal quote. When I asked for a breakdown of the cost and any additional details, he became irritated and short (and was slow to respond). He would not answer any further questions about the details of the install; he refused to come out and visit the site and take a phone call to discuss details. He said in order for them to do the job I would have to send half of the money upfront to a random PO Box and that was the only way to pay. Why would I send money to a PO Box with no form of communication other than very vague emails. Very unprofessional. I would encourage others to avoid this business. read more

I inquired further for quotes and they told me it would take a while to get one because they are busy with other projects. It's not like they were doing me any favors..... I am here and ready to pay them. They must not want my business, and I'm not going to hire someone that doesn't care about my project. This company did a fairly large tear out of my back yard and then planted sod. It has been almost 3 months and the grass looks good in most places. It still has not flattened out and is quite bumpy in some areas. I have twisted my ankle in different areas of the yard 3 times now. What I am seriously disappointed with is the utter lack of communication. 3 times now Brant has said he will come look and has just not shown up. What good is a 90 day warranty if he won't respond to my texts? I sit here right now waiting for him to show up. So far today it is 30 after the time he said he would be here and there has been no call or text to tell me he is running late and give me a more accurate time. When we moved into our house several years ago the front yard was already planted with the cheapest sod available. Within months it was overgrown with weeds, undesirable grasses, and ivy. We opted to xeriscape to cut down on maintenance and water use. From the beginning River Rock has had serious communication problems and it should have been a warning sign. The first meeting I arranged, no one showed up at my house. Brant told me the person I talked to had been sacked and did not share meeting info with Brant before leaving. Oops. Brant was very apologetic and I let him come by to survey. Brant was very professional and knowledgeable. He drew up a quality, clever design for the yard, and for $10K, it was about the same as other quotes. We chose him with the mutual understanding that 1) there would be less yard work, and 2) any plants that did not survive after the first few weeks would be replaced. After the last of the workers left, the yard looked GORGEOUS. Within a week and fairly heavy rain, we discovered swaths of the yard not covered with weed barrier at all, which aggravated the problem. I'm not talking uncovered strips of an inch or so, I'm talking several square feet of solid weedage. After a few weeks I emailed Brant expressing my frustration, and also to come replace the few plants that were clearly not going to live. No response. Two weeks later I called him and left a voicemail. No response. A week after that my wife left a nastygram voicemail. ONLY THEN did I get an email response from Brant, saying things were 'crazy' at the moment but I was on his list. Three weeks later, I am apparently still on his list: no word from him, no weed advice, nothing. The absurd part: his office is half a mile from our house, so this could have been settled in minutes if he managed his time better. Because River Rock did a great initial job, I actually recommended Brant to friends of ours. Later they told us they scheduled four different meetings with him, and each time he was a no-show. Our situation is pretty unpleasant as it is, but that level of poor communication is unacceptable. The lost stars in this review come from the mediocre weed barrier and its incomplete coverage, but more importantly, also the poor communication throughout the process. read more

We moved in about 1.5 years ago, and in that time we've had 5+ contractors (pool, fence, gas, gutters, steel, tile, etc.) doing different things. Our experiences have run the gamut, from Charge of the Light Brigade type nightmare (thanks Patriot Fence) to pretty solid. Brant and RRLL are among the best folks we've worked with, and I couldn't be more happy with the results. First, the professionalism is top notch across the board. Not only does Brant know his business and have a commitment to quality, but all his guys go above and beyond to make sure the work is done right. Case in point, we were putting in and replacing a lot of sod, and they were definitely over their estimates in terms of the amount of grass needed. The lead guy on the team noticed a dead spot in stuff they weren't removing (where there was an old stump under the lawn that I hadn't bothered to take out) and quickly removed/sodded it. I was also impressed with how Brant responded when it was clear we were going to come up short in some areas (dirt, grass, etc.). He didn't charge us for the overages of stuff they said they would do, eating the costs and standing by his contract. It seems like a no-brainer, but I can't tell you how many contractors we've worked with that try to make the client eat the costs for their mistakes, and working with a stand-up guy like Brant really goes a long way in my book. Finally, the costs are incredibly reasonable given all the aforementioned. They aren't the bargain basement of landscaping, but they're also not going to give you a quote with 50% margins. Much cheaper than some of the high end landscape design folks in town for the same quality of work. Basically Brant is the perfect balance of cost with great quality and reliability, exactly what you want in a contractor (landscaping or otherwise). Anyway, we're ecstatic with the lawn (7+ palettes), the new irrigation system (rebuild/extend), and the heavy steel edging we had them put in. I'm a designer and a little OCD, so that says a lot. Will definitely be going back to them for any future work we need done, highly recommend them as a reliable and quality option. read more

I hired Brant and crew from River Rock to come out and install 10 zones of irrigation, clear and xeriscape my courtyard and side yard, and sod the patchy nasty back yard, plant a mexican orchid tree, assemble several flower / plant beds. From start to finish everything was on point and the crew guys were awesome. First off, Brant showed up with a free estimate and stuck very close to it even though I added a tree planting to the mix. Second, after the large job was completed it looked awesome and the crew cleaned up. The landscaping is completely transformed into a cozy and less water consuming living space. I've now gotten several compliments from neighbors down the street I didn't even know thanking me for helping make the neighborhood more beautiful. Now that's good kudos for good work.
