As Steve suggested, I reached out to him about this issue and received no response. I suppose he had no way to refute my criticisms. His inspector made comments that were either completely wrong, wildly exaggerated or conjecture about what could go wrong (it's a house - of course something could go wrong somewhere down the line but the inspector is there to tell you what is in need of attention right now). Of course the other buyer thought Steve was a hero and helped them dodge a bullet - I was afraid I wouldn't get out alive base led on the hyperbole of the report. I hired H&J Freile last August to inspect a home my mother was considering purchasing. Unfortunately, in the end, I felt that H&J misled me and made promises they knew they couldn't keep in order to bait-and-switch me to earn my business. I initially spoke to Joyce to discuss the specifics of the inspection as well as pricing. At this point early in our first conversation, I had mentioned that a detailed inspection of the roof was an absolute must for me. Many home inspectors do not perform detailed roof inspections and I have had experiences with prior home purchases where I discovered major issues with the roof after closing. After Joyce looked up our house in her system, she promised me in no uncertain terms that their inspector, Bill Chapman, would personally climb up onto the roof and perform a full detailed visual inspection and that he would even return at a later date in the event of rain for no additional charge. On the morning of the inspection, a different inspector, Mike Scanniello, shows up in his personal vehicle without a ladder and claimed he was never given instructions to inspect the roof and had no plans to do so. Although Joyce was very courteous over the phone and Mike was prompt, personable, relatively thorough, and made himself available outside of normal business hours to answer questions, ultimately H&J Freile charged me ~$150 more than their competitors and did not do what they had initially promised. After I complained about the roof issue, they did perform a brief follow up inspection, but only after I called a half dozen times to navigate their bureaucracy to ensure that a ladder would be available. An inspector came to the house with my agent and took some pictures of the edge of the roof and gutters. They also used my email address without my permission to sign me up for a referral service (I believe it was HomeAdvisor), which proceeded to spam my email inbox multiple times a day until I unsubscribed. read more

I had used more than one inspector in my past home buys and was not too happy with results...and THEN ... I used Steve from H&J Freile for my last inspection and it was the best thing I ever did for my home buying. Since that was first time I had used this company and I was really not sure what to expect . However , I was glad they did an awesome job in finding all major issues that any other inspection company ( that I have used in the past ) may have simply missed. Steve was pleasure to talk to and was prompt/professional with his on time arrival on the day of inspection, He went above and beyond when it came to the actual inspection. He went on the roof ( found issues) and difficult to reach crawl space areas and found major issues that wold have impacted my purchase down the line. Steve was very patient in answering all my questions and was extremely knowledgeable & helpful i.e., even after the inspection was done. Joyce was wonderful to talk to during setting up of the appointment. The inspection report was promptly delivered online as promised and did not miss to record not even one issue. The report itself was clear to understand for both side lawyers & I. It made the next steps much easier. Awesome experience! Steve Zimko was very responsive, patient, informative and thorough throughout the process. Responded to my call before the inspection to coordinate efforts and hear my special concerns. Inspection was at a larger property (2800 ft^2) and, even though he had only scheduled me for two hours, stayed for almost four without once mentioning the time; was careful to look at everything and took as long as he needed. Talked me through everything as he performed the inspection. MAKE SURE YOU ARE PRESENT FOR THE INSPECTION! Hearing right from Steve as he walked through the house made reading the report much easier and more informative. Report was clear, detailed and VERY helpful. Will take your questions even after the inspection report is published. I will go with these guys (especially Steve) every time I need an inspector in NJ. read more

This was my first home inspection and I didn't know what to expect. But H&J removed the stress. My inspector, Bill, showed up right on time and was dressed neatly (this reflects the company in my opinion). Before he started he went through his process thoroughly with me, and showed me how to read the report. He also provided a handy Homeowner's binder filled with valuable information. Bill crawled around every inch of the home, and when he was done he took me room by room and pointed out everything he found -- from major issues to minor things. Sorry, cannot recommend this company. Scheduled a home inspection with Dean. Needed to confirm time with Realtor and Seller. Called Dean back to let him know the Realtor was OK but Seller doesn't own a cell phone and wasn't home. Dean said NO PROBLEM at all holding the time. Get confirmation time is OK but as I'm about to call, Dean calls and advises me he gave the time to someone else. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. There are too many companies out there to deal with one who treats customers like Dean does. Glad I didn't hire them. read more

I am a single woman and since I am not strong about technical things, I wanted to hire a good inspector for my home purchase. I have found a house of my dream that had nice upgraded HVAC, solar system and some other perks. Then, I hired H&J Freile to perform the inspection. They found a whole list of problems including asbestos and I almost walked away. Then, I met a friend of mine and he explained the asbestos issue to me and that millions of homes have been built with perfectly safe form of asbestos and there is no issue. In addition, asbestos cannot be called for unless there is chemical analysis to proove it. We had the air in that house analyzed and voila - no contamination was found! Most of the other items found by the inspector were related to the house being old and meeting old codes, not the new ones but that is normal. Then, I went to the closing and I am very happy in my new home. I am very disturbed that I almost lost it becuase the inspector gave me misleading assessment. read more
