The store is in my building so I go there more frequently than I really want to. I think I am addicted to it - I go there over and over but don't really like it, but can't stop. On the plus side, the Back Bay store caters to professional women, so it has some work-appropriate pieces and less of the studded and sequined items of other branches - I actually prefer the DTC location for its drugged hipster vibe, but it's out of the way for me and also DTC itself gives me the heebies. If you're over 22 you need to be careful what you buy here unless you want to look like you're trying way too hard. And if you tend toward shopping addiction and actually work near here you will find that you buy things because there are just so many of them and there is always something new - and then you will realize it is cheap looking and you will return it and then you will do the same thing again. If you go at lunch or on the weekend you might want to be in a patient mood, because there are frequently 30 people in line for the dressing rooms - use the men's. read more

I recently bought my lady friend an 80 dollar gift certificate to H&M. Needless to say I got some that night and she got two bags full of fun, stylish clothing that she'll be able to wear for years to come. If you're a dude, well, this place is nothing special. This store has gotten A LOT more expensive, and I suppose that's a corperate level issue. However, a lot of the clothes had hangers poking straight out of the fabric or makeup stains on them, which doesn't exactly make me inclined to spend $39 on a sweater. The floor sales associates were awesome, but the cashiers were rather unfriendly and slow-moving (they could have been tired I suppose.) However, the worst part of my shopping experience was getting rung up by my cashier. He kept rolling his eyes if I was fumbling with my pile of clothes or with my wallet. I accidentally entered my PIN number incorrectly and he grumpily swung the card swiping machine around and slammed on some keys and had me re-enter it. Overall, good selection, slightly over-prived, some friendly workers and at least one or two employees who made me feel like my patronage was a burden to them. read more

It is depressing to overhear the conversations had by the staff here. And you can't not overhear them because they gab loud and long whilst you wait in the interminable line for the dressing room. Often the conversations are about how and when to quit working at H&M, or how somebody else just got fired. I also find the way that the staff are dressed to be depressing. It is as though they can only afford to shop at H&M with their employee discount, and given the state of their clothes, they can't afford to shop at H&M all that often. That aside, I enjoy shopping here. It is a great way to kill three hours and forty bucks. I usually take about twenty things with me into the dressing room and buy two. read more

Most of the time I love you, newbs h&m. You are typically more neat and organized than DTX. I like your layout - nicer stuff on the 1st floor, trendier stuff + accessories on the second. I like sneaking down to the usually shorter line at the men's counter to check out. But I do not like that when I went in yesterday to find those FAB sequined leggings (!) from the day's email blast, you informed me that the only ones left were on the mannequin (and alas, I am not mannequin-sized), but you did not offer to look up the inventory at/call other stores for me. So I called DTX myself and *poof* they put a pair on hold for me. So, I hustled my disco booty down there to buy. I would have stayed here for the rest of my shopping, and just gotten the leggings at DTX, but that slight customer neglect made up my mind for me. I like H&M. I can buy a few shirts there and not completely kill my imaginary budget. Their selection is vast and affordable and tiny! I typically think I'm a small person until I try to squeeze into some of their cotton t shirts. What's that all about? Some things stretch, though, and when that's the case, it's good. The changing room lines are usually long, which detracts me from buying a lot of clothes from there, because I NEED to try those clothes on and if there's a long line, it's all over. Maybe I'm alone here but I love this store. I think it's for one main reason: I hate to shop. If the headline is "I hate to shop" then the tag line is "and I can't dress myself". I should be more ashamed of it, but I'm not. I don't like to spend money on clothes and prefer to make the entire process as painless as possible (so I can get out of there and spend my hard earned money on drinks and food). This is why H&M works for me. Everything is laid out in a manner that just "makes sense" to me. Downstairs are more social/weekend clothes, top of the escalator is work/dressy clothes, and I'm yet to find a reason why they have the back of the upstairs (seriously). My version of shopping happens as follows: (1) Sweep the downstairs - my college friends have started to notice that I always wear the same things. Worse off is when high school friends point out that the outfit I'm wearing has been a regular since junior year (yes, of highschool - it was only 2004!). It's a guarantee that I send at least 3 picture messages of ridiculous things I find (or am tempted to buy depending on how close we are to October 31) . This shouldn't take more than 15 - 20 mins. (2) Go through the upstairs quickly. I like their stuff and I know what fits me. I pretty much pick up the work outfits on the mannequins and anything else I don't already own. This is another 15 minutes. (3) Browse through the area behind the escalators. This takes 30 seconds because this area just has no use. (4) Try on everything. (5) Buy everything that fits I tend to walk away with enough that I don't have to repeat for months. Score! read more

Unless you know exactly how something's gonna fit, don't bother getting it. The fitting room lines are dismal at best. The selection here is pretty much on par with any other H&M, and they have a decent men's section. My one gripe about H&M men's pants are that the sizes are all over the map. Sometimes I get pants for my fella in one size and in a different pant he's three sizes bigger. WTF? I'd like a little consistency. read more

The layout of the store is weird, and definitely don't go on weekends without having a Xanax ready. However, this is a great place to pick up plenty of simple staples - cute accessories, basic short and longsleeve tees, and leggings to name a few. H&M...Sometimes I wish we had one of you in VT and other times I forget about you guys! H&M is just one of them stores that is great for the simple needs! Like T-shirts, belts and maybe even a hat or two! The accessories are just cheap. Shirts will run you less than $10 and they seem to have some good sales through out the year. In our latest adventure we needed something for the girlfriend! And I'm happy to say that H&M saved us from a trip back to our Hotel. We got what we needed for only $5 and it cost less than the T ride back! (In case they didn't have what we needed.) Staff was great! They pointed us in the correct direction. Check out was made easy as well. The store is huge so its even worth just looking around in if you got time! But be ready they may have some good deals that day. Selection: This H&M is definately, a higher end H&M. (It also has better sales). It has better brands of stuff, and an amazing underwear and bra department. Price: Of course it's cheap just like all the other H&Ms. I've gotten, some great stuff here on sale, as well. Problems: The line for the dressing room is tooo long. I know it is at most H&Ms but this one is the WORST ever. I swear like 45 minutes. min. The same with the checkout. These make going to H&M an hour trip everytime. read more

I went to two different H&Ms in Boston and found this one to have better stuff but it was severely disorganized. The escalator was broken going up so everyone had to use the tiny elevator to go upstairs for more of the women's clothes. I wish I could give 3 1/2 stars. If you need an inexpensive, trendy outfit to wear out then this is the place to go. Some stuff is okay for work too. The men's section is a little more casual. The biggest downfall here is that the fitting room is always so long and the place is always crowded. I think they do a good job at the registers though, getting you in and out. This is the best H&M store out of the ones I've been to in Massachusetts so far (that includes Braintree, Downtown Crossing & Cambridgeside Galleria -- although the last one has vastly improved). My advice is try to shop here on a weekday rather than the weekend. Being in here on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday is like a death sentence. read more

In comparison to other Newbury Street shops, H&M boasts some pretty impressive prices. Look to other locations, though, and you'll feel like you're being ripped off here. Location, location, location. Men's selection isn't very inspiring, but occasionally you can find a nice fitting hoodie or something. (score 1-100) - 75. Great place for discount clothes. This is the place of the 10 dollar T-shirt and 20 dollar jeans. They may not be of the highest quality but if you need a last minute black collared shirt or a sport coat for a night out (I bought one for 50 once) this is your spot! H & M again fills a need in the city. They don't have a huge variety of styles but they make simple yet hip fashion. You are not going to buy your whole wardrobe here but you will always find something inexpensive to add. Tip: The clothes are made for more of a European build, meaning a bit on the slender side. If you are husky or over don't even bother. I am 6'1 and 190lbs and the XL barely fit at times. American builds need not apply! read more

I enjoy finding fun things to wear at H&M, especially right now with the goth Jedi look in menswear. What I found appalling was one white or white-passing store associate telling another store associate that they should have returns-only lines and have their most "ghetto" coworkers run that line. I pointed out that it wasn't really okay to say and he didn't respond. I went to another line on a different floor. If that's serious, that's wrong of him to say. Two words for you; cheap and cheerful. One of them applies to H&M on Newbury Street. One of them does not. Don't get me wrong, the fact I have yet to receive eye-contact or the full attention of a member of staff, (even when making returns, less still when using the changing rooms), has never dissuaded me from buying masses of funky sweaters, chirpy shirts, slinky shorts and average accessories. You really can't beat the store for fashionable little numbers that you don't want to pay much for. I love the bargainousness of H&M, I regularly walk out with bags full of stuff for under the 100 buck mark. But I suppose that its worth remembering that whether we're talking garments or enthusiastic sales assistants, quite simply, you get what you pay for. read more

Cute selection but the sales people there are RUDE. I was shocked last time I was there. Me and my friends got there about 45 minutes before the store closed and they looked at us like we were ruining their whole evening. Not just some of them...all of them. The 2 women in the dressing room were rude. There was one other customer in the dressing room and we somehow had to wait in line to get into rooms. The woman counting our items acted like her job was the worst in the world. Then, another saleswoman came in to tell the other sales lady that there were rooms open downstairs. So, after one of our friends got a room, we were supposed to go downstairs? But, the rooms up here were empty too, and we were very clearly shopping together. So, we said we wanted to stay with our friend. They were fine with it but clearly unhappy with us. It made no sense...the store was practically empty. And the cashier who checked me out was just as rude. After I checked out on the second floor, I went downstairs to wait for my friends. It was just about 9 and the store was closed but I was clearly already checked out holding my shopping bag. As I waited for my 2 friends who were upstairs checking out, I had THREE separate sales people come up to me and very rudely inform me that they were closed. I was literally just standing at the bottom of the steps, holding a shopping bag and waiting. It was raining outside otherwise I would have much rather waited there, rather than obviously ruin these people's evening. Seriously, if you hate working there that much, don't! I did get a cute shirt so I added a star for that, but H&M, just because you can offer cute clothes at amazing prices, does not mean that your salespeople should treat customers like that. read more

I've only been in this location twice: the public opening, and then a month later. I LOVE it. I don't like the selection in the Downtown location, and hate that by the time I get there it is overpicked, but I haven't run into this problem in the Newbury St store. It also has a much different selection. There isn't a children's section, and they also sell more higher end selection (the "H&M" label as opposed to the "Divided" label.) I can best describe it as being more sophisticated and polished without losing the unique H&M quality. read more

Believe it or not, I had never been in an H&M until last night, when I DJed the press opening party of then new Boston store. My girlfriend bought me a great blazer from H&M that I rock all the time, so I was excited for some discount shopping when I finished playing the tunes. Buyer beware: There are plenty of great deals to be had here, but be careful still! That $10 sweater may not be as great a steal as it seems - the arm just might unravel on you the first time you attempt to wear it. (The above came from personal experience). I'll conclude this update with a tip: If you're up on the second floor and the line for the fitting room is weaving in and out of the lingerie section (as it often does), check out the one downstairs. God I hate negativity. It really pains me to have to do this but....... This store sucks so BAD. What American man wants to look French?? These clothes, and I speak of the male stuff only, are rediculous. I don't want to look Swedish, French, Swiss or Silly. Do you? Why? I looked around here in boredom while my sig. other. was shopping for a baby gift and I could not find one thing I would wear. Turtleneck Sweaters?? She did however find some things and now here is my next bowl of crap for you: The stuff is cheap and if you wear it and look good power to you but after like two washings it is over. The color is gone and there are holes. This is cheap, throw away clothing. The concept is stupid. Pay more and wear the stuff for years. Examples: LL Bean, Timberland, North Face... Euro Trash - Trash. Ikea clothing? That's like Boeing Suppositories. Airplanes are nice but I wouldn't put one up my ass. Some things just don't mix. This Review Is not Based on the actually clothing, but the staff. I took my 11 year old school shoppong on August 27th around 11am to uplift her spirits afer she had found out some very upsetting news. At first I had a bad impression. I had asked the women on the botom floor at the register( Chubby women with big hair) if the kids department was upstairs. She looked at me with extreem addtude and said"yay" as if I was bothering her. She didnt appear busy to me she was just talking to a co-worker. We found the kids department and everything went great. My daughter and I had spend itleast an hour and a half trying on clothes with multiple trips to the changing room. Her spirits were really high. We narrowed down our options and waited in an extreemly long line to pay. Our bill came to just under $200.00. Considering the cheap prices that was a Lot of items for an 11 year old. However, when I went to pay with the card my husband gave me to go school shopping the women at the register (another unhappy annoyed chubby women but this one needed to fix her bad dye job) she wouldnt let me use it. It was a card with my husbands name on it. She gave me a totally annoyed additute in front of my daughter. The bad dye chubby women got her manager Katey or meghan?? A not so pretty plane jane pale again not happy manager came a told me I couldnt use it either. I told them (as my daughter started crying- not becuase she couldnt get the clothes it was just a bad day for her with her earlier bad news) that I couldn call my husband- or american express(Im allowed to use his card) and the pale not pretty manager said "No- doesnt matter" I guess for getting paid 7.75 an hour these are the type of service savy people you'll get. Maybe I could possible understand not letiing me use my card -but maybe go about it in a more professional way. Itleast let me call my bank. If I could give this company ZERO stars I would. After spending close to $30.00 for ONSIES for my toddler I was shipped the incorrect item. I called into their customer service department and had a really hard time understanding them to do phone static. I asked for a refund and was told I would have to wait until they received the item back to issue a refund. Most places these days will issue a refund even before you drop the item in the mail. Told the rep that I don't believe that is an ethical business practice anymore especially for a company that is supposed to be so highly rated. I asked to speak to a manager and they put me on hold and spoke to the manager themselves never bringing me into the equation. When he came back onto the phone I told him that I didn't want to hear his rendition of what the manager said and that I wanted to speak to him MYSELF. I was denied that right and was HUNG UP ON. This was my first time ordering from this company and you can bet that I will NEVER order from them again. SO DISAPPOINTING! read more

This particular H&M has a lot of swank to it, I almost felt like I was somewhere else. However, ambience is only half the battle. Granted, my visit was probably the Sunday night before a restock, but it shouldn't be the Sunday night before an upkeep. The employees use walkie-talkies to dissipate line congestion, but not to organize or tidy the mountain of clothing in the back of the store, where I plucked out a classy graphic polo for under $15. I know I read this in another review, but it holds that DC has a better selection of solid color tees and polos and pants, whereas here there is more preppy-fashionista designed clothing. I've been to a few H&M's and prefer this one. They have certain lines that the other downtown store doesn't carry, and they're more organized. I wouldn't stock my closet completely with H&M, but it is worth looking for those knockoff fashion pieces at wonderful knockoff prices. read more

I usually go to H&M to find clothes for my kids, and some cheap items - like t-shirts or basic items that you can wear and not worry about tossing them after a while. This store only has clothes for adults, so one star gone for that... The basic tops are good, but again they're not of the kind of quality that you can keep and wear for years and years. I almost bought a summer suit there because it was so cheap...but I know I will end up wishing I never bought it. The location is very convenient, instead of going to downtown boston (as most of the downtown is closed since Filene's and the basement are both now gone). read more

I went to college in Back Bay last year, and often walked around on Newbury street to kill time in between classes... To this day I find the H&M here to be the most awful location I've ever had the misfortune of shopping at. I don't think I've ever walked out of the store and not been in a bad mood. Sure, you'll walk out occasionally with a couple of great finds for a low price, but I'm particularly disgusted by its lazy staff of wannabe hipsters that are under the impression that they are somehow superior to every customer that walks into the store. Also, GOD help you if you go on the weekend, it is a mob scene of high schoolers in Uggs pulling things off the hangers and yelling to their friends across the store. I suggest going a little bit out of your way to the Downtown Crossing store if you want a decent H&M experience. read more
