However, the quote that we received upfront for our tax preparation was considerably higher than what our actual invoice ended up being. While I'm happy that they adjusted the invoice, the communication from their office left a lot to be desired. I received an email to tell me that we were missing signatures on our e-doc returns when I had already emailed to confirm that everything was ready to go and to be filed. At the same time they told me that my taxes were not filed because I had not paid the invoice which was sent to me 16 hours ago. At no time that I know that the invoice needed to be paid upon an email receipt. I went directly to the office to pay the invoice on the spot and no one could tell me what signatures were missing. Very frustrated with the quality of service and the communication or lack thereof.

The first mistake Ms. Houston made was submitting my original tax return on February 20, 2025, without first reviewing or confirming the information with me. I was never given the opportunity to approve the return before it was filed. The second mistake occurred the very next day, February 21, 2025, when she submitted an amended tax return before I had even received my original return. This caused significant delays and pushed my refund back for several months longer than it should have taken. The third major mistake was that Ms. Houston submitted my tax refund using the wrong bank account number. This created additional complications and unnecessary stress regarding my refund. The fourth issue is that Ms. Houston did not appear to carry the proper insurance coverage that tax preparers are expected to have in situations involving filing errors or professional negligence. In addition to these serious mistakes, Ms. Houston failed to take immediate accountability for her actions. Her communication and overall conduct were unprofessional throughout the process. I believe this situation should be properly documented so that others are aware of these issues and so accountability can be taken for the mistakes that occurred.

We took my mom's final taxes to H&R Block on Ecorse Road in Taylor, MI. The main reason I went…read morethere was that last year, when I brought her taxes in, I was told they would do this year's taxes for free. Otherwise, I would have chosen a different place. To be safe, I brought all of the original documents, including her 2023 and 2024 tax returns, along with all of her original 1099s and income forms for this year's 2025 taxes. They had our documents for an entire month. Every time we called for an update, we were given a different excuse--first that they were still working on them, then that the documents had been shredded, and then that they had been given to someone else. Eventually, we were told they were ready for pickup. When we picked them up, we were charged a "discounted" price of $210 for someone who only lived for three months of 2025. That was more than they charged her for a full year of taxes last year. On top of that, none of our original documents were returned. When I called to ask about them, I was told they would look into it. To make a long story short, we were lied to multiple times--our original tax documents had been shredded. I have no idea what documents we might need in the future, and now they're gone. The level of incompetence and dishonesty throughout this process is unbelievable. Being told personally that the service would be free, only for that to be denied after the fact, is especially frustrating. Be very careful where you go and who you trust with your original documents.
